The question was a pressing one, more insistent as the years passed and my mother grew older and frailer. She was Indian and my late father, English, but what was I?

Each time someone asked where I was from, thinking I looked ‘foreign’ because of my olive skin and dark hair, it niggled. It never offended me, I just wasn’t sure what to say.

The classic 'but where are you really from?'

  2. We want to be seen as seperate from Hindus but we celebrate Diwali with great gusto, more than even Vaisakhi.

There are many great significant events in Sikh history but we choose to celebrate the release of Rajas as if it is one of the most important things in our history. Most western Sikhs don't even know the jail story.

Did we correlate this event with Diwali like the Europeans did with their winter festival with Christmas?

  3. Things have improved though. I remember being at Delhi train station as a 11 year old back in the mid 90s. I almost burst into tears seeing the disfigured children with Polio pulling themselves along with skateboards. Thank God Polio has been eradicated there.

A few people whose families originate from across the border have some fascination with the place, probably due to being influenced by stories they've heard growing up.  I think they are confused, they've heard that this is their ancestral land and develop some strange mental connection to the place.

Thank Waheguru my family come from the Sikh side. Although there are a few descendents of partition refugee families married into the family. I don't think they are nostalgic about it though.

    My interpretation of:

"My wife (Marina Wheeler) originates from Pakistan, she is a Sikh and her parents were from Sargodha. She has been asking me to visit Pakistan since a long time but unfortunately I was unable to do so but I intend to visit the amazing country soon," Johnson had told Geo News in the interview.

"My wife's family come from some foreign land, she's been asking me to arrange a visit to the place, but I'm too busy sh@gging birds behind her back for this. Hurrumph!"

My nana was born in Pakistan, although his ancestral village is on the Indian side. Thankfully he left a year before the violence started.

He did go back to visit once but I have no inkling whatsoever.

Why go back to a place where you were thrown out of? It's the same with East African Sikhs.

  5. I was shocked by this story but I have had first hand experience dealing with volatile apne builders.

Some of these guys are extremely rude, aggressive and full of rage when you critique their work, they are full of ego and won't think twice of getting violent. They are like those comical bad guys from an awful Punjabi movie.

They are all nicey nice when trying to get the contract but can flip out afterwards.

    Message to all UK Sikhs:

Please find some sense of self-worth that doesn't involve projecting our community as some sort of dimwitted, sepoys for outsider communities.

We need to move away from this now.  It's actually doing us lots of harm, because it reinforces this docile, perpetually loyal image that we need to shake off.

    Exactly.

Otherwise we are living up to claims like 'Sikhism was created to protect Hinduism.'

  7. She's no different to war criminal Barack Obama. The man who started wars in Libya and Syria and was then given the Nobel Peace Prize. Their skin colour allows them to get away with this, if a white person had done what Obama did he would have been ridiculed like George Bush was.

Say what you will about Trump but he at least hasn't invaded a new country and things seem to be relatively calmer in the middle east.

why not be overtly hostile to brits and gorey instead of trying to be buddy buddy with them. we r physcally stronger than them they are passified and weak why not take advantage of them i see nothing wrong in it. some will say the establishment is our enemy and not the people... but it is the people that keep the establishment running

I think you live in some fantasy land. The average gora is bigger than the average Sikh. They also have a long history of being successful in combat sports.

  9. Look, Punjabi Pakistani Muslims, Indian Muslims are not really any different from Mirpuri and Afghanistan Muslims. Get that in your heads people.

Who are the dodgy-est people in Europe? The Albanians, Bosnians and Chechens.

There are North African grooming gangs in France, Holland, Belgium. Turkish ones in Germany. Lebanese ones in Australia. Only one thing links these people together.
