  2. waheguru, they are the lucky ones...god bless them...they are able to stay there to hear/see the beautiful guru and hear his beaituful shabads

the fish are there..as a symbolic figure..to remind us...that as fish are nothing without the water, we are nothing without God...

And they are there to basically "clean"...eating the dead cells...as a way to purify the water

Thats quite a nice/interesting analogy - never thought of that before - us without god, fish without water...

They are there to eat Parshad (that we give to them, even thought we're not supposed to!) have you seen the fish go for Prashad!

  3. We need some modifications to our SikhSpeak.Com website. Can anyone customise Wordpress themes properly/professionally

"We'd like Www.Sikhspeak.Com converted in to a XHTML+CSS compliant wordpress template with dynamic side bar and scope for the intergration of as many plugins as we see fit. an example of the level of work we'd like done would be something akin to http://www.justinshattuck.com/" – PS how much if you can?"

  4. Food for thought... I have heard/read the arguement and counter arguement A million times on this...

People say Sikhism isn't a religion it is a way of life....

What is relgion - but a way of life? Therefore Sikhism (like other religions) is a religion with a distinict identity and "way of life"

The way I think about this is, if it were not important (and the Guru Sahibs were happy) with the "way of life" why would God want the Khalsa Panth created? :T:

    My two pennies worth...

  5. Dear Sikha,

I think I can put something your way. Its created by a cyber friend (Sartaj Singh of Restoring The Pride) and its an intro video to Sikhi. VERY GOOD (especially for non-Sikhs). We also have an interview with him for MAY (so sign up :@ ) Anyhow the video link:

    http://www.restoringthepride.com/gndj.html

I recommend you support his work and purchase a DVD copy (a nice collection) but until then you can download a fairly high quality copy - hope this helps!

  6. SikhSpeak launches "April Vaisakhi Special" Magazine FREE!

As the worldwide Sangat celebrates Vaisakhi festivities worldwide, SikhSpeak.Com "The FREE Sikhi e-Magazine" presents it's seventh issue. Dubbed the Vaisakhi special, the issue has taken the small team almost two months to create and has culminated in a 40-page special, for the Sangat...FREE. The team aims to distribute it this weekend. To receive the magazine simply go to: www.sikhspeak.com/subscribe.html and follow the instructions.

    What's in the magazine?

News, views, poetry, a kids section (especially for our younger "Cool Khala Kids" readers), in profile interviews, historical articles and MUCH MORE! The magazine comes out every month!

Why do we have to subscribe if it's FREE?

Simply because only our readers obtain the magazine as soon as its released. Why? We need to monitor our downloads so that our website hosts don't shut us down! Once you have registered and confirmed, you'll receive SikhSpeak on a monthly basis (don't worry we don't share your details with anyone).

    Who can I tell?

ANYONE and EVERYONE! The more people that know the better. There are no age restrictions, the mag is for ALL! Webmasters and bloggers can support us too. (www.sikhspeak.com/support.html)

    Why is the magazine FREE?

We believe you shouldn't have to pay to learn about Sikhi! Hopefully, our magazine is both enjoyable and educational! If you do feel like contributing towards the cause (and hopefully towards our print magazine, in the future) you can do at www.sikhspeak.com/donations.html (rest assured it's secure).

So please, register today and spread the word...The mag has something FOR EVERYBODY! You can also download previous issues (if you're new to SikhSpeak) from the website!

    Gurfateh to all!

    Gursharan Singh

    Dear Gursharan Singh

Great stuff! If you email me at sikhspeak@gmail.com I will send you a whole load!

  8. Dear Sewadars,

    Gurfateh Ji.

Firstly, congratulations on all the hardwork you guys have been doing - it's not gone un-noticed! Thank you for providing such a great service, I appreicate it must be difficult...

Secondly, I think some of us should discuss things rationally with an intelligent and mature mind! Remember, we are the Khalsa who will make a difference to the world?!

Anyhow, thanks! Great job with SikhSangat.Org

    Gurfateh Ji! d_oh.gif

  9. I think a few friends and I will be attending too, I spoke to one of the organisers who assured me that there was no funny business in the play and it focused on sikh ideals and conditions in and around 1984... I think the problem was chinese whispers before it even started. Like someone intelligent here said, see it, and then address any issues (should they need addressing). Expect a full review/report in SikhSpeak March Edition and on the website...with plenty of pics :)

    Gurfateh Ji

  10. I received a VERY VERY informative and detailed essay about RAAG all the types, moods what it means etc...For those that are interested, I will put it up as an e-article next week sometime...but if you want to read it (its 4 A4Pages) go to www.sikhspeak.com/downloads.html

PART 1 of the article is in december and PART 2 was in January (which people on the mailing list received, if you're not on the mailing list sign up for free at www.sikhspeak.com). January Issue (with Part 2 will be up soon this week)

    Regards!

  11. Go in the comments sections, discuss in a rational manner and prove him wrong! He's based some of his assumption from reading threads on sikhsangat.com, which he openly states in some of his previous articles/discussions.

    www.pickledpolitics.com

    www.barficulture.com

Im with Sarbloh on this one, I have emailed him (as my sign up to the blog wont work) DISUCSS IT RATIONALLY...we can sometimes lead to our downfall, although I appreciate this is due to passion rather than anger - it's not going to help!

    here is my reply...

    Dear Sunny Hundal,

Hope you are well. Sorry for using this email address, I can't seem to register on the Guardian's blogs. I wanted to ask a few questions about the article:

    http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/sunny_..._democracy.html

I have read the article, my questions, being a young professional British Sikh are in response to the comments,

"Young Sikhs, for example, have followed a broadly similar trajectory, becoming more religious than their parents and even expressing desire for a Sikh homeland (Khalistan) based on Sikh values. But there is an important question to be asked here: how much of that desire for shariah or Khalistan is a result of a rational discussion and exploration of what it might mean in practice, and how much of it is simply a connection based on the search for identity?.."

I find some of these comments illfound and a matter of opinion rather than fact. I would like to know are these based on any statistical analysis or simply your opinion? If based on any facts, I do not see how this is so, as Sikhs aren't even monitored under their own ethnicity for a start. Did you know that British Sikhs is a recognised ethnicity, which alot of Sikhs DO IDENTIFY with. The search for identity stops here within Sikhs, as our identity is our heritage - our religion, hence BRITISH SIKH. We only have to look no further than Monty Panesar playing for England.

Secondly, comparing S. Law to "a Sikh homeland on Sikh values" is quite frankly showing a lack of understanding of basic tenants. Can you please tell me what these "Sikh values are?" If, some Sikhs, desire a homeland namely Khalistan, this is built on foundations of HUMAN RIGHTS and years of genocide and persuction, namely from their own Government. You simply have to contact amnesty international to find out that after the persuction of Jews in Nazi Germany Sikhs have been the victims of the worst persecution WORLDWIDE, with numbers not even known, so the extent could be worse. I find the link between both S Law to Khalistan rather ill found. There are members of the UK public who want the BNP in charge, does this mean a demise of British democracy?

Surely, defining someone as "more religious" is open to interpretation, what I deem as religious may be nothing to someone else. After all, how do you measure "being more religious?"

My point is that by illogical comparissons and simply stating opinion, this may do more harm than good, I appreciate you are entitled to your own opinion, and I can respect your views, I hope you can do the same for my counter arguements. I simply feel dividing up and boxing communities is the wrong step forward.

    Take Care,

    Kindest Regards

    Editor@SikhSpeak.Com

  12. I must say it's refreshing to see such a educational post in the forum. DOn't get me wrong this is a sad sad step for Panjabi and Sikhs in Panjab as they are the ones who are at the forefront. However, the objective is to educate and improve and on this front I think we have to credit the www.SikhGiving.Com team. Read their press release on what they hav been doing...great work...and look at all the other messed up ways people are gettin "a high." [featured in SikhSpeak January Issue]

Coming from somone who has worked with ethnic minorities in drugs (in the UK); the problem stems from home...when we approached various religious institutions they all gave the same answer "it's not in our community" you couldnt be more wrong...it resulted in us making a Video on drugs for the Panjabi community....

Make sure you do visit SikhGiving.Com/Pr theres a great piece on their work...

  13. help them! (unless they got vomit on/in their mouths ..cuz that will b a bit difficult)or atleast call an ambulance if u dunno how 2 perform CPR!

CPR = Compressions of 30:2 Breaths [Adult] Compressions at 2 fingers above breast bone using palms of hands at a rate of 100/min

Its pretty tiring - always try and get someone to help u and always call for 999/911 (or whatever your emergency number is)

This is something I think should be taught in schools general first aid....could save or prolong somones life!

  14. dude chamkila songs were no good

lol i kno...i wonder why he was murdered grin.gif:)

Rumour has it (THIS IS A RUMOUR- but one that is a pretty 100% one) that Chamkila was gunned down for:

    a) singing dirty songs

    b) apparently he was having an affair with amarjot (the isnger and she was pregnant with his kid)

Thing is they were both married (to other people) but hey this is just something someone told me once in Panjab, it seems to be folk law there though...dunno if its valid or not, just thought I would tell u since u asked the question

  15. Allow me to add my 2 cents....

The actual English word "Giraffe" is also borrowed. The real name of this animal comes from the Arabic language in which it is known as "Ziraffa". So, if the english can take that and change it to "Giraffe", I think we should be able to change it to "Jaraaf" in Punjabi.

LOL! Jayd the whole English lanuage is "borrowed" English is a mish mash of every world language!

  16. Dear Sangat Ji,

Gurfateh, I am trying to get a website created and require someone who has knowledge of php/using a management system (eg Joomla) and can customise it for the website (IT IS A SIKHI website for the ww cyber sangat)

Now, I was going to give this to a company to do, but felt, if I need to pay someone I'd rather give the money to someone here! Well let me know via emailing at Editor@SikhSpeak.Com if someone thinks they can help or actually do this, I can give a clearer indication via email!

  17. Dear all,

I have often wondered (with no one giving me a suitable answer) - What is LOHRI? and Does it have any SIKHI significance (NOT cultural)? I would appreciate it if someone could educate me on this one...

    Gurfateh and Thanks!
