Gurfateh ! In this video you see Vaisakhi being celebrated in Jodhan village (Dist Ludhiana) in around 1980 - the height of the Green Revolution in Punjab. You see Village Vaisakhi celebrations - Beating of the Nagara Drum , Bhangra , a cavalcade of tractors , a flypast by a plane dropping rose petals and a fiery speech - I am posting the video because the Bhai Sahib recites the verses of Sayyad Baba Bulleh Shah - Verses in praise of Guru Gobind Singh "Na Kahun Abh Kee, Na Kahun Tab Kee, agar na hote Guru Gobind Singh, to sunnat hoti sab kee" I talk about neither yesterday nor tomorrow; I talk about today. Had there been no Gobind Singh , All would be under Islamic sway.(circumcised) Click on link to see the video ; http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=- 4898971193664857730&hl=en-GB Enjoy ! GurFateh ! Here is a clip from the 1975 Dara Singh religious Film "Sava Lakh Se Ek Laraun" - It shows the singing of Dhadi Vaars - perhaps the first time a Dhadhi Jatha was seen on the Big Screen . The Dhadi Jatha is Bhai Ajit Singh 'Mauji' The Film is quite good (By 1970 Punjabi Film standards) - though those who like to nit-pick will see lots of anachronisms - eg. Modern day Khandas on Dastaars and on the Nishan Sahib etc and the fake beards are a bit distracting ! - But it is quite good and incorporates a number of well known Sikh Sakhis such as 'Sardars Bota Singh and Garja Singh' levying tax and establishing 'Khalsa rule' Enjoy !! Gurfateh ! Here is a fascinating clip from a film, 'Die Sikhs' (The Sikhs) made by Jaroslav Poncar and Wolfgang Kohl in around 1980. I believe it was shown on German TV - I have a very bad third generation copy thats about 21 years old !. This clip shows Vaisakhi at Anandpur in 1980 - You see the Huge Sangatan , Guru Gobind Singh Ji's weapons and lots of Nihangs - the voice-over is a little stilted - and she comes out with some strange ideas - eg. 'some say Nihangs are just farmers that don't want to work ' But other than that its a very good snapshot of the time. ENJOY ! Should bring back some Great Memories !! ENJOY ! click on link to see ; http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...04&hl=en-GB

A video for those who can't find a partner ! I've got 3 sisters and when I was a kid - used to always tease them mercilessly about getting married. A favourite way to tease / wind them up was to put on this video It really is for girls but also works on boys of marriageable age - especially if they happen to be Too Tall, Too fat, have a speech impediment are bald or walk with a limp ! It's old school punjabi bolyian - from the 1975 Dara Singh religious film "Sava Lakh Se Ek Laraun' I think its funny ! - the only sour note is the fact all my sisters are now married and live 1000s of miles away in the US - I'm lucky if I see them once a year - serves me right for teasing them , I guess. If you're reading this I miss you all ! Click on the link to see it ; http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...40&hl=en-GB

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh !! Siri Amritsar Ji de Darshan Ishnaan I have had a longing all this week - a Longing to have the Darshan of Siri Darbar Sahib I know I'm not alone in this longing so I thought I'd post these Photographs and short movies - for you all to enjoy and have a cyber Darshan of Siri Amritsar. This first film is a clip from the 1960s film 'Nanak Nam Jahaaz Hai' - in it you see Divali at Amritsar - The Deepmala and atishbaazi. I particularly like this clip as towards the end you have a close up on the Jot (Lamp) kept in the Harimandir Sahib. This Jot is often not seen by many,as it is tucked away behind the Bhai Sahib doing Degh sewa , on the right hand side as you enter. Here is a picture of the Jot - covered in lace material . The Jot is in the form of a Standard topped with a dome - it has one central 'flame' and then it has a number of brass Lion Heads which form a circle around the base - each have a flame coming out of their mouths. It is sometimes encased in another cage like structure. I can't find any information about this Jot - in terms of age or history - If anyone has any information Please post it. The Jot must be quite old as it is in the famous Carpenter watercolour from 1854 Whenever I see the Jot it always reminds me of Bhai Mansha Singh - When Massa Ranghar occupied the Darbar Sahib around 1743 and stopped Kirtan and sewa, Bhai Sahib would secretly enter Darbar Sahib , swim across the sarovar and light the jot - until he was caught and speared to death in the sarovar, Here is the BodhRaj painting of this sakhi. In the film clip you can see how the Darbar Sahib looked in around 1969 - note that the central chandelier is smaller and of a more 'organic' style - not the huge one you see today. Also note the Chandoa Sahib is richly embroidered by hand not the machine worked one you see today. Here is the Clip , click on the link to see it http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...15&hl=en-GB This next film is from 1986/7 - it was produced by the ISYF (UK) and shows the Amrit Vela Ishnan of Sri Harmandir Sahib - where the floors are washed with milk at around 1am. In this film you can see the Akal Takht still being rebuilt , you can also see the Jot I mentioned above - you also see the priceless wonderfully intricate marble floors of the Harimandir. You also see the 'Sharda' of the very fortunate sewadars who perform this sewa. Click on the Link to see the film; http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...73&hl=en-GB This next film is from 1985 - it shows Maharaj Ji's sawari - the arrival of Guru Sahib from Kotha Sahib and the Parkash Sewa and the taking of Hukumnama. This film is special in that you get to see the Maryada for performing Parkash sewa. One point I noted is that when the Bhai Sahib is reading the Hukumnama he holds his 'Hazooria' in front of his mouth - a mark of respect which is rarely seen today. Click on the Link to see the film; http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...93&hl=en-GB This clip is from the same film as the above one - it shows the Asa Ki War keertan after the Hukumnama - I believe it is Bhai Hari Singh - He sings the beautiful shabad - a(n)mrith sar sathigur sathivaadhee jith naathai kooaa ha(n)s hohai || The True Guru, the Speaker of Truth, is the pool of Ambrosial Nectar; bathing within it, the crow becomes a swan. (Guru Raam Daas Ji Raag Gujri ang 493 Click on the Link to see the film; http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...32&hl=en-GB Hope you enjoy the videos GurFateh, Ranjit Singh 'Freed'

Prada Turban For the Fashionista who has everything - The Prada Turban HMMMM what do you think ???????? (* From METRO (Cali USA Published September 29, 2006) Is the key to next summer’s fashion all in a hat, or more specifically in the elusive, enticing turban, the No. 1 accessory in Milan’s round of preview showings for the Spring-Summer 2007? “Turbans are easy, quick and powerful,” said Miuccia Prada backstage, after her much applauded collection presented Tuesday evening. Earlier in the week, Giorgio Armani said he used the turban to underline femininity, while Dolce & Gabbana outfitted their club girls with turban shaped headbands. The Prada woman needs power to don her new clothes, which, like her headgear, are enigmatic rather than energetic. It’s not surprising that after her aggressive warrior collection for winter, Prada would opt for a calmer take on summer fashion. But the uniform-like collection with its concentration on the upper body and towering heels with little in-between was puzzling. “There are no complicated thoughts this round,” said the designer famous for her cerebral fashion. “This time it’s just about fashion and making it more important.”

May Guru Sahib Shower all of you with Blessings on this special day - The Parkash Purb of Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji . To mark this day i have posted a short film from 1989 - it was shown on Channel 4 (UK) in the Children's TV slot. It is a very good little film - it has a very 'homespun' quality - it is not perfect but remember it was made for children. It also has a social history angle - in that it gives a snap shot of the Walsall and Coventry Sangats in 1989 Enjoy it Click on the Link to see it : http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=...25&hl=en-GB Here is a collection of some beautiful and interesting old Portraits of Guru Sahib. ( I had some problems posting the pictures - I kept getting a message saying I've posted too many pics - So I've posted links to the pictures - just click on them to see the pictures ) These are from the collection of the Government Museum and Art Gallery Chandigarh. This watercolour from the end of the 19th century - shows Guru Nanak in a chola / cloak with Quranic inscriptions There is a janamsakhi account of Guru Nanak receiving such a chola at Baghdad - and one is preserved at Dera Baba Nanak. Perhaps anyone who can read arabic script can confirm that the calligraphy is from the quran - it has been said that the calligraphy on the sleeves is Gurbani from Japji Sahib. - (If you can read shahmukhi please give a transliteration - Many Thanks ) I have posted some details and a picture that is said to be the Chola at Dera Baba Nanak. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/4699/dsc00317cb8.jpg http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/2327/dsc00318wq2.jpg http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/8755/dsc00319dl1.jpg http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6864/dsc00320rp7.jpg http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/9699/cholakr6.jpg In this Punjab plains watercolour from the late 19th century - Guru Sahib is shown wearing a patchwork cloak embroidered with the Mul Mantar. http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/3965/dsc00323tj8.jpg http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/7852/dsc00332fl4.jpg In this Kashmir style watercolour Guru Sahib is also wearing a patchwork shawl http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/7605/dsc00322ld7.jpg Guru Nanak at Panja Sahib http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/8283/dsc00315yd4.jpg 'Das Guru Darshan' Painted by Bhai Puran Singh 'musavvar' , dated AD1882 http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8443/dsc00316af2.jpg A woodcut from the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/1016/22734largela3.jpg The following pictures are from the B40 Janamsakhi in the collection of the India Office/ British Library. Gufateh ! With regard to Duleep Singh - He is buried in the church-yard of St Andrew's & St Patrick's Church , Elveden, Suffolk (near Thetford about 50 miles from Cambridge UK). He is buried alongside his wife and son. While Duleep Singh did take amrit at Aden , it is clear from his will & testament that he wished to be buried with Christian rites. Here are some pictures Headstone Headstone of Duleep Singh , his wife and son The Duleep Singh memorial Stained glass window gifted by his children to the Church The plaque on the wall of the Church gifted by UK Sikhs Duleep Singh's children were all buried with Christian rites - you can see Princess Bamba's grave, at Lahore, in this film I posted on SS http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?showtopic=21690 Back to the topic of Memorials here is the Memorial at Kranji , Singapore The Grave of 'Ranjit Singh' of the Sikh Regiment - at Kranji - note how it says "Sanskaarey gaye" in Gurmukhi Ranjit Singh 'Freed'

Gurfateh Bhai Sahib ! In general the Sikhs and Hindus were cremated and then the remains were buried - This is what happened in some of the Memorials in France. The Chatri memorial in Brighton marks the spot where 53 Sikhs and Hindus (who fought in WW1 and were injured and cared for at Brighton but then died) were cremated - their ashes were scattered in the nearby sea. Muslims were buried at nearby Woking. However Many Sikhs and Hindus were buried - I think I remember reading that in the 1960s the Indian graves at the Neuve Chapelle Memorial were exhumed and the remains were cremated. It must be remembered that cremation was quite alien to the British and most Europeans - the first cremation in British history occurred in around 1880 ( I believe it was illegal before that) Hope that goes some way to answering your question. (Sorry I don't have any references I'm just quoting from memory! ) Ranjit Singh

Gurfateh ! The Horrors of Partition 1947 This clip is from the 1986 mini series of Bhisham Sahni's novel - 'Tamas'- It is very powerful - it dramatises the events in the Potohar and Bari Doab areas of West Punjab. In a village Sikhs gather in a Gurdwara to protect themselves from Muslims - The Muslims attack- the menfolk go to fight - the women then gather in the darbar - the singing of 'Gagan Damama Bajeo' sends shivers down your spine . When the women realise the muslims are coming into the Gurdwara they march to a well and jump in -to save their honour - taking the Singhaneen of mir mannu 's prison as inspiration. at the end you will see that Rababis come into the gurdwara and sing 'Jagat Jalanda Rakh' - the Rababis have been stopped by the Muslims from going to the gurdwara to perform kirtan saying they are 'Kafirs' for singing Gurbani - but also the Sikhs have stopped the rababis from coming saying they are muslims. The clip is very powerful - and shows the sacrifices of Sikh women during Partition. Gurfateh ! This clip is from an old yatra video made by the ISYF Southall in the late 1980s It is an incredible documentary - I believe it was made for Pakistan TV It really is amazing I first watched it many years ago - and I still love it - the way it is made and the wonderful Punjabi voiceover is excellent. The film is just tacked on to the end of the Yatra video made by the ISYF (which isn't that well made) however I wouldn't be lying if I say this is one of the best sikh history films I have ever seen . The Film shows the Sikh Gallery in the Lahore Fort Pakistan - which houses the Princess Bamba Collection it includes the Famous 'Dussehra' painting of Ranjit Singh's Darbar by A. Schoefft. It also includes many other treasures from The Sikh Raj. Enjoy it - Please accept my apologies for the atrocious quality !!
