  2. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

    Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Thats Sharda! Really good Seva done by the Panth. It's nice to see that there are SIkhs out there who have so much love for their Guru, that they are willing to do WHATEVER it takes to give utmost respect. I read this article today in the National Post, and it really made me happy...except one thing. (sorry, this has to be brought up)

I was totally happy reading the article (and i am still am), but at one point this happiness turned to saddness, when i read the following paragraph....

<<< "That's why we booked the whole plane," said Harbant Singh Jagirdar, an organizer with Sacha Sauda, a religious group in Brampton, which has a large Sikh population. Sikhism broke away from Hinduism in the 16th century to embrace a monotheism borrowed partly from Islam.>>>

Sikhism never 'borrowed' anything, or broke away from anything. It was simply the Truth revealed. Period. For example, suppose there was an antique painting, and a famous author commented that it was 'very beautiful'. Now suppose, a couple of hundered years later, i was born, and i saw that painting, and said it was 'very beautiful'. Does this mean that i borrowed this idea from the author who called it beautiful first? No. The Truth is the Truth, and Sikhi is the Truth, not borrowed, not 'broken off' of another religion, j

ust revealed to the world through God Himself.

T.O. airline to deliver Sikh holy books

Texts will be treated like 'living guru' on 24-hour flight

    Joseph Brean

    National Post

    Friday, February 20, 2004

Surjit Babra's SkyLink Aviation will transport the Sri Guru Granth Sahib scrolls from India in early April.

    CREDIT: Glenn Lowson, National Post

TORONTO - Fresh off flying some of the world's most dangerous skies, a Canadian aviation firm is bound next for the relative calm of India's Punjab, where it will carry out the first-ever mass shipment of Sikh holy books from the Golden Temple at Amritsar.

Landing 24 hours later after a direct flight to Toronto, 148 copies of Sikh scripture will be shuttled under police escort to a temple in Brampton, Ont., each book with its own seat on several buses, as a helicopter follows overhead dropping flower petals along the route.

Sikh tradition holds that the scriptures, called Sri Guru Granth Sahib, should be accorded all the respect and dignity of a "living guru," or teacher, said Ranjit Singh Lopoke, a director of the Guru Nanak temple in Brampton.

The books are printed only on the grounds of the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of Sikhism.

This tradition raises frustrating logistical problems, especially now, when many Canadian Sikhs need to replace their well-worn copies. Most copies of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, including those in Canadian temples, have been exported from Amritsar either on the laps of devout Sikhs, or impro

perly stowed away in luggage, a disrespectful treatment for a religious teacher.

"That's why we booked the whole plane," said Harbant Singh Jagirdar, an organizer with Sacha Sauda, a religious group in Brampton, which has a large Sikh population. Sikhism broke away from Hinduism in the 16th century to embrace a monotheism borrowed partly from Islam.

On April 3, just in time for the Sikh new year of Vasaki on the 13th, the donated books will be taken from the Golden Temple to the Amritsar airport "with great pomp and show," Mr. Jagirdar said.

There, the books will be loaded on to a Russian-built TU154 passenger jet, operated by SkyLink Aviation of Toronto, each of its 154 seats covered in white linen.

For Skylink, such finery will mark a departure from the rugged norm. With a fleet that boasts some of the largest planes and helicopters ever built, the company made its name flying refugees from Rwanda to Ontario's CFB Trenton, spraying for bugs in Saudi Arabia, dropping food into Iraq and Afghanistan, and flying UN missions in Kosovo and the western Sahara.

In a business where few but powerful competitors compete for multi-million-dollar contracts, SkyLink has often flirted with controversy.

For the historic flight from Amritsar, five Toronto-area men will take on the role of Panj Piaia, or the "five beloved" who escort the books to ensure there is no smoking, drinking or eating on the flight, and that all heads are respectfully covered.

In this new age of air travel, their kirpans -- curved ceremonial daggers -- will be stored in a velvet-lined box in the cockpit.

The Sikh authority in Amritsar has also donated instruments for the flight: a harmonium and drums used in Sikh prayers.

On arrival at Toronto's airport, the books will be guarded from the sun by parasols as they are loaded on to buses for the last leg of their travel to Sacha Sauda's office in Brampton, where they are to rest before distribution to temples and individual Sikhs

. There, staff are busy preparing wooden beds for the books with mattresses and white linen, Mr. Jagirdar said.

SkyLink Aviation is footing a sizeable portion of the $225,000 cost of the operation, but Surjit Babra, the company president and a Sikh, asked that the specific amount of the contribution not be published, in keeping with the religion's tradition of humility.

    Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

I think Gurubani always teaching us the way to live a balanced life and on which issues we need to focus in our life. As we read in Japji Sahib Guru Nanaks SayS

KUDARAT (NATURE) KAVAN KAAHA VICHAR, VARRIYAA NAA JAVAAA EK VAAR"

Also like we keep unshorn hair which is also a natural thing so Sikhi is no way against the nature.

So the approch towards nature is positive as per gurmat, so we should not cut trees unnecessarily and do vat ever we can do to improve our environment.

Singh ji, totally agree with you. I work in a factory parttime aside from uni in mississauga, ontario and there are many singhs and punjabis there who have abandoned the hair and identity. I have many talks with them and first of all they didnt notice i was amrtidhari. They were just talking stuff like about kudian and drinking and meat and so on .... and i just ignored them and/or told them no guys but didnt brag about me being an amritdhari.. when they found out they were like in shock... i had no idea at first.

Singhs with the identity but choose to eat meat and or drink... i ask them why they do this when u have the roop of guru ji. They just simply say ohhh stress man .... and or we r allowed to .... and sometimes even GURU JI DONE IT SO WHY NOT US!

Waheguru, like there are soo many misunderstandings out there, and totally agree with Singh ji, singhs that can be a good example need to get out there not only us doing the naam jap but to everyone else. In gurbani, jan nanak mangai dhoor tis gursikh ki jo aap jaapai avra naam japaavai. What a WICKED LINE! I love this line. ANyone who hasnt looked this salok up please do so on www.sikhitothemax.com

  11. I do not mean to cause any trouble by this question but just thought it needed to be discussed.

As we have seen there is another gatka tournament comiong up, i think that brilliant, the more the better.

What i wanted to ask is concerning what happned at one such event before. where some twits who call themselves nihangs turned up and started challenging people and carrying a camera about to record themselves.

This according to them is 'khalsa tradition' as they are trying to improve their khalsa warrior fighting skills!!

    BUT

if anybody else challenges any of them then its 'ego' ?!

Firstly whats the view on that? Are not all challenges slightly if not completely based on ego? Even if your trying to improve ur skills, can u do that without ego? i dont think you can!

Secondly how can you claim to be a khalsa or a warrior of anything and be afraid of a little clash? I dont really care too much about ancient warrior traditions, cus im sure most fights dont work on traditions of old, but if you've never actually had a fight can you claim to be a warrior? either street or competitively? maybe its just me but wouldnt it be a bit shameful for a warrior to turn down a challenge from an equally skilled opponent?

    Waheguru jio!

Ya i actually didnt see dat... a little funny but bad at da same time unsure.gif

A singh once told me... the phrase "saintsoldier" is often given to us... u gotta be a saint first to be a soldier.... cant be the other way around u see wat im saying....

And what u have pointed out is yes i can say ego from the other person challenging ... but to just simply spread out the feeling of the atmosphere is also reason.. but almost most of the time its all ego... i agree wit u bro ...

  12. oh yeah i got off topic, the best resource about sikhi is Shabad Guru, Guru granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, and Panth Guru, Guru Roop Guru Khalsa Ji, the sangat.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND SOME BOOK ON SIKHI FROM THE LIBRARY, MOST OF THEM JUST MAKE SIKHI LOOK LIKE SOME FUSION OF HINDUISM AND ISLAM.

    peace.

    Waheguru jio!

Jio welcome to the sikhsangat forum ^_^

As paaji here has said that he doesnt recogmend any books... i agree wit him as we will always say any of our answers always lyes in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji and above bhainji has mentioned www.sikhitothemax.com ... if u havnt checked it out ... please do so

  13. Waheguru jio!

Really nice posts... even though i am not married yet... the other two things you have pointed out do apply to me bu t i will guru kirpa try to answer best i can.

For the first thing, i dont myself read gurmukhi. I was born and raised in canada, and learnt punjabi here adn there newspaper, and now slowly i adjusted. Took a few punjabi classes when i was younger (20 now). When i took amrit in april 2001, i knew hardly any gurmukhi, i read from english gutka, now i slowly adjusted to a gurmukhi one, so dont worry there paaji guru kirpa its all good.

Second, about your wife. As some have mentioned you wont be able to take amrit wit out your wife too. One above my post i think has mentioned that he will let go of his wife..... noooo .... dat is not her fault. Say if u both didnt know about sikhi and later on one goes on the path and decides to fully go on path, but the other doesnt, u cant blame her. rite ?? When you guys are married, your a sikh, so u have given vows (in the lavaa, there are certain declarations you have made to the guru), together as one, u and ur wife, so u guys have to go through it together. ALso as someone has mentioned... do ardas... guru ji knows u want to be wit him one day, he surely will take u and fulfil ur ardas.

Third. LOL dis is my worst thing too. No matter how many raensbais, kirtan darbars, amritvela i sit in, my feet fall asleep in less than 2 min, and my knees start aching after 5 min. I dont know why. Its normal singh dont worry about that. I usually just take a walk but usually try to stay around the hall where the kirtan is going on or else u sometimes tend to get distracted wit the socializing ... hehe

    >

Anyway singh i hope u da best. And watever i have said i hope no one took it offensive or wrong. As everyone has mentioned... do take advice from a gursikh who knows more, and or go to the panj pyare and they for sure will tell u to take wit ur singhni.

    bul chuk maph jio!
