  1. I shall start with explaining a little about Saptaks which might make it easier to understand the notations.

    Madh : middle

    Sapt : 7

Saptak: containing 7. It's technically an octave....but in Indian classical music the last Sa belongs to the next saptak. Also, the literal translation of an octave would be 'ashtak'. So, doesn't make much sense there.

An image about saptak on Harmonium.

Mandr : lower (dunno if that's the literal meaning)

    Taar : higher ( " )

The above picture shows the saptaks very well but a horrible depiction od komal and Ma teevar sur.

Usually the Mandr saptak keys are denoted with a dot beneath them and the Taar saptak keys with the dot above them. But then again, it's in English.

Compare the image below to the one above to see the way octaves can be moved around according to the Sa you choose.

The followinf images are a Punjabi notation, from the website of Jawaddi Taksaal and shows a bit how keys are normally written.

Simple explanation for Ma teevar sur: When all the shudh(pure/normal) keys and Komal keys are marked, there is only one left, right next to Shudh Ma. That is a Teevar Ma.

Now, one might ask why this is Teevar and the other Komal.

In this case, Teevar : slightly higher

Komal : slightly lower (komal = soft)

This video explains a bit about the sargam and how Sa can be changed accoording to the scale you want to sing on.

Hope this helps a bit :smile2:

  2. How is the year 1954 linked to Sant ji?

They were born in 1947, became mukhi in '77, and so on...

    I just don't get 1954....

or are the years simply coinciding with someone else's life?

  3. I don't think that the mods or admin want to deliberately close all threads on a forum they volunteer for.

But the threads have to have at least a good standard of sane-minded and intellectual discussion going on.

It's not fair to keep blaming the OPs or mods for threads being locked.

    We're a community here.

The blame lies on all of us for not being able to interact in a mature way.

  4. http://in.news.yahoo.com/delhi-rape--lawyer-says-hang-victim-s-friend--071313247.html

Yahoo! India News – Thu 17 Jan, 2013

NEW DELHI: The five persons accused of gang-raping and killing of a 23-year-old Delhi girl in a moving bus have got lawyers to defend them.

All the accused also assaulted her 28-year-old male friend. Both were thrown out of the bus after around 40 minutes, battered, naked, bleeding and shivering. The lady's friend will be the main witness in the case.

Meanwhile, a lawyer who volunteered to defend one of the six accused, Mukesh, brother of the main accused Ram Singh, said the victim and her friend were responsible for the assault.

Manohar Lal Sharma, a 56-year-old Supreme Court advocate, said the victim's friend was responsible for the attack as the couple should not have ventured out on the streets at night.

He further went on to say that he never heard of a respectable woman being raped in the country.

Speaking to The Independent, Manohar said: 'I have not seen a single incident or example of rape with a respected lady. Even an underworld don would not like to touch a girl with respect.'

Blaming the victim's friend, Manohar told The New York Times: 'This all happened because of the lust of the boy. This is the boy who should be hanged. He's responsible for everything. He should be punished.'

In an interview with Bloomberg, Manohar was quoted saying that he was 'confident that the men will be proved innocent because there are a number of problems with the police investigation.'

"We will plead not guilty. We want this to go to trial," Manohar told Reuters.

"We are only hearing what the police are saying. This is manipulated evidence. It's all on the basis of hearsay and presumption."

Manohar said the police had rushed through the investigation against the five men even when they were not ready with the key detail of the age of the sixth member of the group, who lured the woman and a male friend into the bus and, according to leaked accounts, was the most brutal in the attack.

"When you have not even established the age of this person, how can you go to court bringing the charges against the others, and say your investigations are complete," Sharma said.

"We all know how police investigations are carried out in India."

Manohar also accused that Mukesh was being brutality tortured in police custody.

Sharma said police had sexually assaulted his client with a stick and humiliated him. "They urinated in his mouth, they did all kinds of things to him. He is facing the same torture now from the jail inmates," he said.

Lawyer VK Anand is representing the main accused Ram Singh, ML Sharma is defending Mukesh, AP Singh is representing Akshay alias Thakur and Vinay Sharma, while the fifth accused Pawan Gupta will be represented by counsel Vivek Sharma.

The sixth accused is a juvenile and his case is being heard by a Juvenile Justice Board.

The police have charged the five under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 376 (2)(g) (gang-rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 395 (dacoity), 396 (murder in dacoity), 365 (kidnapping or abduction with intent to secretly or wrongfully confine a person), 394 (hurting in dacoity), 201 (destruction of evidence), 120B (conspiracy), 34 (common intention), 412 (dishonestly receiving stolen property), and 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

What on earth is wrong with people!!!?! It's a complete hell on earth. I feel so sorry for the victim's friend for all that he's being put through now!

  5. Dhan Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Jee. The King of Kings. A son. A grandson. A father. A husband. A warrior. A forgiver. A humble servant. A Guru. A chelaa. A Saint. A Soldier. A master of weaponry. An inventor of musical instruments. A master of musical melodies. A master poet. A master of languages. etc etc etc.....

People are continually trying to show Guru Gobind Singh Jee as only a warrior and nothing else. MohanDas Gandhi tried that and failed. Many before and after him tried and failed as well. Today, the missionaries are trying as well to take away his Bani to remove the evidence of his masterful grip on knowledge, ethics, morals, poetry, language, arts, crafts, skills, music, etc. Guru Gobind Singh Jee's Bani is a true treasure. The missionaries will fail too. I hope.

Dhan Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Jee.

Waheguru! Waheguru! An absolutely beautiful post! May Guru Saheb bless you Bhaji/Bhenji!!! :respect: :l: :waheguru:

Love the article. Really brings happiness to read, but just one minor quibble I had.

Were they really speaking Hindi (if they were that is completely fine), but if they were speaking Punjabi why did Dinesh say they were speaking Hindi?

Probably, because Dinesh interacted with them in Hindi?

Thanks for sharing the lovely article, though.

  7. I think you've checked the box in 'settings' to show you the adverts. I've done it too...coz it says, "If you wish to support Sikhsangat by allowing the forum to show you google adverts, please select yes."....Although, I've only started seeing them since today.

Edit: this could be because I'm viewing the site on Internet Explorer at the moment....and Chrome's got Adblock installed on it.

  8. Terrible news. But....just 2 points : Firstly, That area is certainly not 'Thames Valley' and secondly a little factoid : Did you know the Russian word for railway station is named after that very railway station in London, Vauxhall ? Anyway, ain the 1800's the Tsar sent his envoy to London to study the railways has Russia wanted to build them too. The London Transport people took the Russian envoy to see Vauxhall station in between Waterloo and Brixton. The Russian envoy went back to Russia with plans to build a Russian railway and stuck with the name they found in London : Vaksal. Hence, the Russian word for railway is 'Vaksal'.

    Interesting!
