    Artist's Notes

Mai Bhago ji, Mother Bhago, sought after Guru Gobind Singh ji’s blessings to have a son. But while travelling to Guru ji, she was distressed to hear that a group of 40 Singhs had deserted him during the Battle of Anandpur.

She rode to their gathering, made them realize their mistake and then set off along with them to find Guru Sahib, who was still being followed by the Mughals. They reached Khidrana, where a battle took place between the two armies.

In this battle, those 40 Singhs were all slain, Guru Sahib forgave them and they came to be known as the Chali Muktay, the liberated ones, and Khidrana came to be known as Muktsar.

Tragically, Mai Bhago ji’s husband and brothers were killed in this battle and so she dedicated her life to meditation and attained liberation.

After attaining liberation, Mata ji became detached from the physical world and its customs and traditions. She started to live her life free of all attachment to objects and any desire to do anything.

Kavi Santokh Singh ji explains that her spiritual state reached a point where she became even detached from basic things such as wearing of clothes.

This is when Guru Gobind Singh ji intervened and suggested to Mata ji that in order to preserve the honour of her family, she should cover her head and wrap herself with a shawl.

Mata ji obeyed Guru Sahib and continued to meditate on God until her last breath.

The Daughter turned Wife turned Warrior turned Saint, Mai Bhago ji’s story is very inspirational to those who are on the Path of the Saints.

For me Mai Bhago ji has been a constant inspiration to take action, to take charge, and make things happen. When I heard about the latter part of her life, she then also became an immense inspiration for me to meditate and to cultivate strong states of detachment.

In their stories Ram Chander threw Sita out after he thought she was in love with Ravan,

You gotta stop getting your facts from potatoes.

    Read the Ramayan - http://valmikiramayan.net/

    Spoilers below -

It was a very emotional scene.

After rescuing Sita, Ram ji realizes that if he takes her back to Ayodhya, then these actions of the King would be seen as scandalous by his people and they would be outraged. Not only that this would also lead to moral corruption and degradation.

So Ram ji puts everyone else before himself and tells Sita ji that she can go where she wants. He even says that she can marry any of his younger brothers or Sugreev or Vibhishan, and live a comfortable life.

From Valmiki ji's words you can tell Ram Chandra ji is saying it with a heavy heart.

Sita ji is very attached to her husband and sees him as Akal Purakh sahib, so she is torn by these words. She tells him that she is only devoted to him and then asks Lakshman to create a pyre and throws herself on it.

This is the saddest moment in Ramayan.

Imagine you spend all this time gathering an army and search parties. You find out where your wife is imprisoned, and you defeat the greatest  armies and the strongest generals and the strongest man alive, Ravan, all to free a woman you love dearly. But due to the greater cause of Dharma, the betterment of the collective, you have to take the right action and sacrifice your love and tell her that you two can't be together.

And your wife, is also devastated, she spent all this time away from you, longing for you, and when she finally meets you and finds herself in the happiest moment, then she has to separate from you.

So it's a super sad moment, where Akal Purakh sahib has to uphold Dharma and in order to do this, he must let her go.

but after she goes in the fire, all the Gods arrive on the scene. And one by one they all remind Ram Chandra ji that he is Akal Purakh sahib, that he is the Creator of everything, of all of life, that he is the one who set up this play. He is the doer of everything.

After they praise Ram Chandra ji a bit more, the Fire brings Sita ji to him and tells him that she is pure.

Ram Chandra ji takes her into his arms and they return to Ayodhya.

    The end.

    That's the story.

Krishna Ji lost to Kharag Singh

Dude vegetables are not a good source of facts.

    Spoilers -

Krishan ji won against Kharag Singh, and Kharag Singh recognized that he was fighting Akal Purakh sahib and bowed to him.

If their stories are that of Akaal Purkh then so is every single being that comes into existence, their entire life story is that of Akaal Purkh as well.

    You are close.

When you take the stories of every being, every human on earth and you extract from that the Essence of all the stories, that is Ramayan, that is story of Akal Purakh Sahib.

This is why I said earlier-

    "

The old stories of Krishan ji, may seem insignificant to many here. Some would even say that they are make-believe fairy tales.

But when you read these stories with this distinction in mind, that this is a characteristic representation of Akal Purakh sahib, then you will see you will see the deeper meanings present therein.

You will see that the stories are referring to the various states and activities of our mind.

And then when you make that connection between the stories and your mind, you will then separate the wheat from the chaff and obtain real gyan from the stories.

    "

The stories of Akal Purakh sahib play out in our everyday life.

And through them we can fine tune our moral compass.

That's why they are stories of Akal Purakh sahib! He resides in us and when Saints recognize the Essence within and write its stories, they invariably end up applying to us as well.

This is how Mahapurakhs like Valmiki ji imparted practical knowledge of Akal Purakh sahib to us, and in doing this he imparted the moral wisdom of how to live in this world.

So @BhagatSingh, you are saying that chaubis avtar is all just stores describing akaal purkh? And that those avtaars never actually existed?

Well Akal Purakh sahib exists so the avtaars also exist. They have no existence that is separate from Akal Purakh sahib, since they are characters of Akal Purakh sahib and their stories are stories of Akal Purakh sahib.

Now when we say they are stories. We don't mean stories in the regular sense of the word story.

    1.  These stories are Divine Narratives, because they convey to us the nature of Akal Purakh sahib.

    And

    2. These stories directly connect us to Akal Purakh sahib. To listen to the stories is Bhagti because you will feel emotional connection to Akal Purakh sahib through them.

    So about Krishan ji -

Krishan ji is referring to the Jyoti nature of Akal Purakh Sahib, what in English we would call Consciousness.

This is why Guru Nanak Dev ji says in Asa Di Waar -

The One Krishna is the God of Gods and the God of Consciousness; The Inner Consciousness of a Being, is Krishna, if anyone recognizes this secret. (meaning work towards recognizing this secret in yourself)

The Bhatts (below) say that it is that Jyoti nature of Akal Purakh sahib that has come down as Vaman ji, Ram ji, Krishan ji, and then as Guru Nanak Dev ji.

They give darshan and live, breath and die like the rest of us.

indeed. The way Jesus is known as the Living God in Christianity.

(In my view, Jesus Christ is also Akal Purakh Sahib.)

Why must the One God become Living God?

This is because the Abstract Absolute provides no practical guidance.

Saying that God is omniscient or formless or anything like that does not tell me anything about how to conduct my life in the day to day grind.

So the Abstract Absolute must unite with the Human Body in order to impart valuable lessons to humanity.

This is why Akal Purakh sahib is known as NarHari, Man-God, in Guru Granth Sahib.

Narhari is the merging of the Abstract with the Concrete into a single Being as Narsingh Narayan, as Krishna Murari, as Jesus Christ, as Guru Nanak.

When the Abstract merges with the Concrete, it completes our understanding of Akal Purakh sahib.

Sure there are internal lessons to learn, but the external shouldn't be ignored. Krishna the deity isn't Akaal Purkh Waheguru Ji manifest as Guru Nanak Dev Ji was, and will never be so.

I respect your opinion however this is wrong from the perspective of Gurmati.

  4. Famous does not suggest only.

When the entire list who is being criticized is famous. You can be sure, it is the famous Bhagat Ramanand ji who is being talkd about.

    • Swami Ramanand of Guru Granth Sahib, who do adopted Vaishnav Tradition and propogated it, but after learning Gurmat he left that tradition(no more Bairagi) and adopted Gurmat way of life which means -

Lol you talk as if gurmat, vaishnav and bairagi are mutually exclusive. If that is the case, then you are quite mistaken.

  5. Singh you are right.
Sikh is a generic word that existed prior to "sikhs". There are a lot of sikhs around the world whom we wouldn't call "sikhs" but they are. They don't follow Guru Nanak's lineage. They might follow other Gurus.
The Guru-Sikh relationship is older than "Sikhism" and older than Guru Nanak.

Ramanuja, Adi Shankar, etc these are all Gurus. Bhagat Ramanand who lived prior to Guru Nanak was also a Guru. Guru Ramanand's sikhs included Bhagat Kabir, Bhagat Ravidas, Bhai Sain, etc. And Bhagat Kabir is the Guru of Kabir-panthi and Bhagat Ravidas is the Guru of Ravidasia.

So I would argue Jesus was more of a Guru. And Christians are his sikhs. The word "Christian" is like the word "Nanak-Panthi" that sikhs of Guru Nanak lineage used for themselves.

  6. DeathFearsKhalsa this is a good question about -
    "ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖਵਾਕ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ੧੦ ॥" "Shri Mukhvaak Patshahi 10"
Who is writing this? "Shri Mukhvaak Patshahi " Would Guru Sahib write this about himself?
Especially puzzling when we look at some birs of Guru Granth Sahib where it is written simply as "Mehla 10"

I want add to that -

    "ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹ ॥"
The word 'satgur' and 'waheguru' never appear anywhere in the body of any of the texts. Why is this?

Looking for more info to make sense of these things.

PS I read the response by AjrawatSingh. It's a good attempt at making connections however I don't find it satisfactory. Patshah and Mehla are not being used in the same way at all. Patshah is being used entirely as a metaphor whereas Mehel is literally the body that is the mehel of Nirankar (not a metaphor).

  7. 100% bhaji/bhenji

(You giys can judge me all you want you dont know what ive been through and i will be saying "i" alot interpret it as u wish)

Its been many years now ive restrainted myself for years from everything and i feel as if maharaj has turned his bak on me so cause of that my intention isnt to meet god anymore but to attain ridhi sidhis even though everyone may say they are just attachments and are nothing but half if not neally all of you havent ever exsperienced ridhi sidhis. Every time i get bak on track 8th 9th time now and get to an high avasta my body dies on me. Just now i came out of hospital after 3 weeks which caused me to rest and sleep and miss my simran routine etc and falling bak into a crappy state of mind like i said its happened many times now. Ive noticed if i increase my level of abyass the more punishment i get as in this time round i was doing upto 10 hours simran a day and i neally died of kidney failure docotors still dont know why or what caused this to happen im going through tests still but anyway. Das has been blessed with ridhi sidhis before instead of restraining myself anf being dissapointed and falling into depresstion cause of me not being able to meet god im going to just "enjoy" (enjoy just keep myself happy somehow at least)in this life instead. But anyway theres millions of exsamples i can give you but yeah im done with being upset. My family and friends r my witness to whatever has happend in my life so yeah. Cant tell you guys how much it hurts me writing this this is my first ever post too

    but yeah

100% get your organs checked by specialists 100%.

It could just be illness. You could just be getting sick. So you want to make sure that is taken care of becuase sickness may become an obstacle on the path.

Once you are 100% sure it's not illness...

Know that when one attains high avastha, one also attains mukti there and then, if you know what I mean. They may only stay on earth for a specfic task otherwise they leave. The body shuts down and the spirit departs.

So if it's not illness just raise your avastha as high as possible.

Good luck on your journey.(and goodbye if you get to the point of no return)

  8. The events in a dream pay a bearing on the body

In my experience, those who remember Him as they dream, on them dreams have no effect.

that's why Sri raga baba Hor sona kusee kuar

    ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਉਣਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

(ਸਉਣਾ) Sleeping (ਹੋਰੁ) more than necessary for (ਖੁਸੀ) pleasure will (ਖੁਆਰੁ) exhaust you spiritually.

In this excess sleeping, the body suffers immensely, and the mind thinks unpleasant thoughts.

ਹੋਰੁ Hor = more, ਸਉਣਾ Sona = sleeping. Hor sona means sleeping more than necessary.

    Similar to -

    ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

    Baba hor khana khushi khwar

Eating, other than what is necessary for survival, that is eating for pleasure will exhaust you spiritually.

IN brahmgiani avastha there is no sleep

You have to remember sleep is sometimes a metaphor for those who lack gyan. They lack knowledge of His Hukam moment to moment, because they are not "awake" to His hukam, they are "asleep" to it. This is not referring to when we sleep at night but rather agyan. It is using sleep as a metaphor for being asleep to the presence of Waheguru.

I agree with you that deep sleep has a restful effect

And deep sleep occurs in everyone. After deep sleep for 5 hours, we go into dream sleep for several hours until we wake up.

This process of sleep becomes the Creation narrative of Indic religions. Brahmn is said to be in Deep Sleep for eons, then he begins to Dream and the world comes into being.

  9. one of the least obstructive in the path of the scientific method

Well it's a big thorn in the side of materialistic science, that is currently the mainstream science.

As for missionaries, I think Basics of Sikhi are doing good work. And in the local gurudwaras over here, the gurmat camps are great for getting children into Sikhi. We just need to build on that and have more like them.

One thing is for certain, they are lacking in the simran department. Gurudwaras should allot more resources towards meditation classes and employ experienced meditators who have been practicing for 10+ years. And they should open these classes up to non-Sikhs as well, and actively promote them outside of sikh circles. A lot of white folks have converted to Indic faiths through through meditation and thus opening up to the non-materialistic worldview.

  10. Sleep give no rest because the mind is still active

It is only the body that rests because of lying in a bed

The Feeling of refreshment after sleep is the minds eagerness to enter a new state of consciousness ie waking state

Meditation done correctly would be more refreshing than sleep since sleep effects the mind negativly whereas meditation takes you closer to peace

This is false. Sure meditation gives rest but it is false to say that sleep doesn't or that it is negative. Sleep also gives rest in the same manner, positively.

There are two types of sleep: dream sleep and deep sleep. Dream sleep can cause unrest if the mind is over-active. But it can cause rest as well, I've have had very restful dream sleep. Deep sleep gives full rest as the mind has gone in the void and becomes unconscious. There is no dreaming or mental activity at this point.

  11. It gives energy, mental clarity and makes you chill. However you still need to sleep tho.

Now I have heard of a Bodhi monk who never "slept" instead he meditated all night remaining fully awake in a state of complete restfulness. That worked for him.

  12. Bhenji you can chant His name once a day. Is there any complication with this?

If you do something daily that's called a nitnem. Nit - constant, nem - discipline

Start with a manageable nitnem, something you can do easily then build up from there. Set goals for yourself. Write them down and work towards building a nitnem that includes reading and studying banis as well.

Hope it works out for you.

  13. Gurdwara management is an area that the sangat has little knowledge about or even in my opinion wants to know or discuss. Its a shame really.

The gurdwara on Soho Road also known as 'The Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (Birmingham)' collects millions of pounds in donations and charges for weddings, funerals (it has its own funeral facility) etc. It may not declare all its income but it declares 3 million pounds every year in sangat donations and it has 13 million pounds in investments. Click on the link to see this http://apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/Showcharity/RegisterOfCharities/CharityWithPartB.aspx?RegisteredCharityNumber=508470&SubsidiaryNumber=0

I do agree however, is the sangat aware of what happens to their yearly 3 million pound donations?

Hmm 3 million pounds minus the costs of maintaining a gurudwara, ragis, granthis, other sevadars, etc. What do you reckon that comes down to?

  14. Dude some types of routines don't work for everyone or may not work at a particular stage in life. That's being human. Like Singhuk said you can't beat yourself up for being human.

I find that for me, doing simran all day works way better.

Chant His name at least once a day. That should be easy to start with. Then build up on that. Eventually you might find a routine that works for you.

    Hope that helps.

  16. sadh sangat ji,

for last few days, a thought was striking my mind... now i m sharing it with u....

as u all know, many sikhs still r against sant ji and khalistan... and its not easy to attain khalistan with our own brothers opposing us... so, i think we should try to unite all the sikhs over this issue....

although we have a lot of videos on sant ji but i m thinking to make an animated movie (like rise of khalsa) featuring the events in mid 80's and attack on harmandir sahib and all that.... in this way, we can let the people know the truth and we can present evryhting in better way... i m still not grown enough to work on it but i would like to see other techie gursikhs who have knowledge about animation to work upon it.... i know it includes a lot of money... so, i request all of u to find a group of gursikhs who can work upon it.... and all the sangat should be ready to donate for this noble cause....

all those who really want to help it, plzz reply and tell how much amount can they donate... honestly... no joke... becoz this time, i m really enthusiastic to do something... but more than funds, matters the gursikhs who can do this... plzz tell if u know someone who can do it... we may have a lot of sikh animators but most of them will not agree as they fear from indian govt...

    plzz reply

that sounds like a good idea but i wudnt make a movie on 1984 for obvious reasons...

rather we should make a general movie that talks about the issue
