    Salok, Third Mehla:

O Nanak, forsaking the Name, he loses everything, in this world and the next.

Chanting, deep meditation and austere self-disciplined practices are all wasted; he is deceived by the love of duality.

He is bound and gagged at the door of the Messenger of Death. He is beaten, and receives terrible punishment. ||1||

    Third Mehla:

They inflict their hatred upon the Saints, and they love the wicked sinners.

They find no peace in either this world or the next; they are born only to die, again and again.

Their hunger is never satisfied, and they are ruined by duality.

The faces of these slanderers are blackened in the Court of the True Lord.

O Nanak, without the Naam, they find no shelter on either this shore, or the one beyond. ||2||

    Pauree:

Those who meditate on the Lord's Name, are imbued with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in their minds.

For those who worship the One Lord in their conscious minds, there is no other than the One Lord.

They alone serve the Lord, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is written.

They continually sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and singing the Glories of the Glorious Lord, they are uplifted.

Great is the greatness of the Gurmukhs, who, through the Perfect Guru, remain absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||17||

Sri Guru Dasam Granth Sahib Ji -

    ਚਾਮਰ ਛੰਦ ॥

    CHAAMAR STANZA

    ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਲੈ ਸਕੋਪ ਬੀਰ ਬੋਲਿ ਕੈ ਸਭੈ ॥ ਕੋਪ ਓਪ ਦੈ ਹਠੀ ਸੁ ਧਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਰੇ ਸਭੈ ॥

    All the warriors in their fury, took their arms and weapons in their hands, moved forward with persistence and shouting loudly fell upon the opponents;

    ਕਾਨ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਬਾਨ ਤਾਨ ਤਾਨ ਤੋਰ ਹੀ ॥ ਸੁ ਝੂਝ ਝੂਝ ਕੈ ਪਰੈ ਨ ਨੈਕ ਮੁਖ ਮੋਰਹੀ ॥੩੭੮॥

The pulled their bows upto their ears and discharged their arrows and without moving backward even slightly they fought and fell.378.

    ਬਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਲੇ ਸਭੈ ਸਕ੍ਰੁੱਧ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਚਲੇ ॥ ਬੀਨ ਬੀਨ ਜੇ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ਬੀਰਹਾ ਭਲੇ ॥

    Taking angrily there bows an arrows in there hand they moved and the worriers were killed silectivly;

    ਸ਼ੰਕ ਛੋਰ ਕੈ ਭਿਰੈ ਨਿਸ਼ੰਕ ਘਾਇ ਡਾਰਹੀ ॥ ਸੁ ਅੰਗ ਭੰਗ ਹੁਇ ਗਿਰੈਂ ਨ ਜੰਗ ਤੇ ਪਧਾਰਹੀ ॥੩੭੯॥

They were all fearlessly inflicting wounds and their limbs are falling down, but still they did not run away from the battlefield.379.

  2. cheers for the reply! i rate everyone nowadays that are promoting and teaching traditional raag kirtan!

but there were and are kirtan programs that are in performed in front of the sangat of Sants and Mahapurkhs, such as Sant Baba Puran Singh Ji and Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji....and the kirtan sung hasn't been in raag! if i am right, believing we should sing kirtan in the raag given by Maharaj, then why did these Sants allow kirtan to be sung in a different raag? is raag therefore not as important?

(people that "are in charge" of) Guruduare in the world allow kirtan to be sung in different raags, as to those prescribed by Maharaj...are they wrong in allowing this? is the promotion and allowance of kirtan not sung in raag as bad?

  3. Is it just me......or is raag a must! we can talk about all these different styles of kirtan, but if the shabads sung are not in raag then isn't is going against Maharaj's Hukum?

i've been going through old topics that talk about we should not say other styles of kirtan are wrong....but we are not here to judge, but to follow Maharaj's Hukum! has this tradition, of not only listening to Maharaj's commands but singing in the correct format (raag) been lost throughout the world?

it's virtually changing Gurbani! for example, people singing in raag bhairo instead of raag raamkali, have literally changed what Maharaj is trying to tell us!

i've heard many people saying "it's not abut raag, but singing with pyaar"....but how can we sing with pyaar if we are not listening to what Maharaj is trying to tell us! to be honest the number of raagis out there that sing in the raag ordered by Maharaj are vastly outnumbered to those that do not sing in raag!

i've been having this argument for a long time now.....and now it just seems to look like i'm wrong! for example, people like Giani Amolak Singh Ji did not use to sing or teach kirtan in raag all the time, but look how many people got anand from singing along with them. am i wrong to believe that we should sing a shabad in the raag that Maharaj has written it in?

    is it just me?

  5. lol this is why I am asking this question...

I have been reading and bani forever mentions guru having a mouth, ears, feet... yet Guru Granth Sahib has none of these?

do they not speak to us in the form of Hukumnameh?

do they not hear our Ardaas?

do we not touch their feet with our forehead, and pray that we can stay in their charan kamal?

our Guru Ji clearly has a mouth, ears, and feet

  7. "Now I know why sikhsangat is for kids." - yup well done, thank you for judgung us! if you don't like to see other people talking about MJ's death, then why are you still commenting on this thread? talk about looking for an argument...

if you don't really have any sort of respect for other people's views or interests, then you should really keep it to yourself.......or create your own thread continuing your ideas of sikhsangat "being kids" for enjoying MJ's music...

i do agree though that this thread should be moved to the global events section

This can be any sort of work; an actual job, school, or even engaging in a passionate hobby

Be imaginative, we have so many skills among us, I'm sure we can show the many creative sides as well as our participation in the secular world - we can't hide well after all =)

    Enjoy!

  10. The Sikh Photography Competition – update

A wonderful suggestion from teraroop11 penji, for all photos submitted for The Sikh Photography Competition to be posted in a small/medium size in the discussions section according to which month's competition they belong to. It will help us organise each of the competitions, and it will be clear which pictures were submitted for which month.

Also add the photographs to the group pool aswell, as the threads will be deleted at the end of each monthly competition to prevent further posts.

All photographs have to be entered by 11.59pm on the last day of each month, so we can judge them and give out prizes!

    Enjoy =D

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fatehi!

  11. We have chosen the winners!!

    1st prize

    2nd prize

    3rd prize

    Rules for this month's competition:

All photographs must be related to Vaisakhi, or the month of Vaisakh (including the variety of different occasions within this month).

From Wikipedia - Vaisakh is a second month in the Nanakshahi calendar. This month coincides with April and May in the Gregorian calendar and is when the crop is harvested in Punjab. Vaisakhi is the most important festival in the Sikh calendar and it takes place on the first lunar month of Vaisakh, which falls on April 14 each year. On this day the Khalsa was created and much celebration takes place worldwide in the form of Samagams, Nagar Kirtan, Gatka exhibitions, Akand Paths, and so on.

Also during this month, the second son of Guru Gobind Singh, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh was born on 9 April 1691. On the 18th, the Sikhs celebrate the birthday of Guru Angad Dev, the second Sikh Guru and Guru Tegh Bahadur the ninth Sikh Guru.

On the 16th of this month, Guru Angad and Guru Har Krishan took leave for their higher abode and passed the Guruship to Guru Amar Das and Guru Tegh Bahadur respectively.

    April

    April 14 (1 Vaisakh) - Vaisakhi

April 16 (3 Vaisakh) - Joti Jot of Guru Angad Dev

April 16 (3 Vaisakh) - Gur Gadi of Guru Amar Das Ji

April 16 (3 Vaisakh) - Joti Jot Guru Har Krishan Ji

April 16 (3 Vaisakh) - Gur Gadi of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

April 18 (5 Vaisakh) - Birth of Guru Angad Dev Ji

April 18 (5 Vaisakh) - Birth of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

and thats the only rule lol!!

the main reason for starting this competition was to get more people attending functions, such as kirtan darbars, workshops, nagar kirtans etc. so start finding out when the different events are taking place.......even post a date up in this discussion thread, so we can all attend!

please tell everyone about this competition and get everyone involved!

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fatehi!!

  12. Akaaall!!

what do you think about a photo competition for sikhs? like all shots to do with sikhi.........doesn't even have to be anything specific to sikhi.......but it should have some connotation to sikhism! the closing date im thinking is 1st may, so all hola mohalla shots and vaisakhi shots will be added, and the people that add shots to the pool will be in charge of judging and deciding who is the winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes).......as well as me =D

    what do you think?

btw this is gna be on flickr so if u haven't got an account........join it =p

i'm thinking maybe maximum 5 photos allowed to be added to the group......but i don't know about prizes =s
