I totally agree SoGGSJ. Half the stuff we do is rituals. I mean, the average "Sikh" wedding takes like a week (receptions and stuff), whereas the only statement for marriage in Sikhi is the 1 hour anand karaj ceremony. That's it. Anything above and beyond that is plain stupid. (and stuff like those yellow dots is waaay dumb)

Logic and religion are two seperate methodologies to get to the same answer. Thus they can complement each other if you realize that (and if you don't, they seem like enemies, don't they?)

Anyway, back to the original question. From what I know, Guru Nanak was born as a Guru, and as such retained his name in all of his bani. When the guruship was passed on, he physically passed his jot onto the next guru (who was not even close to a guru prior to that). At that point the next guru would have the Jot of Guru Nanak, which is why all Guru's with Bani signed with "Nanak". However, as the dasam granth states, Guru Gobind Singh was specifically called by paramathma to continue the guruship. Thus, he may be considered a guru from birth in his own right. That is why he signed differently than the previous guru.

This is my opinion, i seriously have no idea if it is true though!

After everthing that's happened recently, there is no way Bush will will. I mean the economy have dived (largest trade deficit and budgetary deficit EVER), the war on Iraq was a huge failure (WMDs.... hmmm... not there), plus he's coined so many catch-phrases that I'm starting to feel sick B)

  5. Something on this matter that has always intrigued me is that when the Adi Granth was first compiled by Guru Arjan Dev Jee, we learn of how the Maryada was established, Guru Sahib placed the Granth on a higher platform (on a throne) and always from that day onwards sat lower to the Granth. Baba Buddha Jee was the first Granthi attend to the Adi Granth.

It wasn't declared as Guru Granth at the time, but was certainly treated in the same manner. Amandeep Singh Munde and Dalip Singh, build upon a similar view indicating that Guru Gobind Singh divested Gurgaddi to the Khalsa Panth (Guru Panth) and to the Guru Granth, hence the practice keeping both Granths together follows...any thoughts?

That's a pretty wicked observation... I never thought of that. As to the first point you mentioned, i'll look it up and get back to you.

  6. khalsa4eva has mentined bout the gyani hu set up guru gobind singhs suit, n ppl bowed 2 that. question 4 the sangat, y do ppl bow down 2 the gurus shaastras?

    vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw!

    vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!

It's because people don't think before they bow (seriously). They look at it think "it is the guru" and thus "i must bow to it".

They don't realize that this is ritualistic, and simply wrong. I know in several cases after that incident, I spoke with some people and asked them to explain why they bowed down to these items, and they did realize that this was wrong.

We've gotta remember that Guru never bowed to the king of India, because the physical form although of a king was not the same as the jot inside. This is why we bow to the SGGS, not because it is a book, but because it has the jot of Guru Nanak within it. This is why we cannot bow down before someone's clothes... guru's jot is not inside them.

I'm not sure I believe that, Kandola. The fact is that what we are spiritually (not physical body) is not going to be governed by "physical" descriptions. Does anyone think that a soul can bow before another? That a hot place will make the soul feel pain? That there are a bunch of souls giving you little tests? (and those that will ask you a question, and then you can give your opinion?)

The way I see it, these descriptions are just metaphors to help us decide what we should be doing in life, but I think that in reality, God is far far above anything "physical" that can be used as a punishment or reward. I mean angels? If GOD IS EVERYWHERE, where will the angels take you? If you become a true Gurmukh, and join with waheguru, do you really need angels to show you where to go?

    Just a thought.

I think parkash of both is OK, but based on the condition that you DO NOT matha-take to it.

Guru Gobind SIngh Jee gave us the SGGS as our final guru (and even told others that you are not to worship him or his writings... ie: The dasam granth.

I know that people have a hard time differentiating between Guru and not, and they bow before everything in site.

For example, this giani came from India here and brought several articles once owned by Guru Gobind Singh Jee (a pagh and a full suit). They set it up in the gurdwara in a little table with ramalas... and EVERYBODY I SAW WHO CAME INSIDE THE GURDWARA HALL WENT STRAIGHT TO IT AND BOWED, IGNORING GURU GRANTH SAHIB!!!!

It's stuff like that which causes problems.

I'm pretty positive that Adam and Eve are metaphors for the human condition. Since science has proven beyond doubt that evolution must have occurred, that just goes to show that Guru Nanak was right!!

    Maaroo, First Mehl:

For endless eons, there was only utter darkness.

There was no earth or sky; there was only the infinite Command of His Hukam.

There was no day or night, no moon or sun; God sat in primal, profound Samaadhi. ||1||

There were no sources of creation or powers of speech, no air or water.

There was no creation or destruction, no coming or going.

There were no continents, nether regions, seven seas, rivers or flowing water. ||2||

There were no heavenly realms, earth or nether regions of the underworld.

There was no heaven or hell, no death or time.

There was no hell or heaven, no birth or death, no coming or going in reincarnation. ||3||

There was no Brahma, Vishnu or Shiva.

No one was seen, except the One Lord.

There was no female or male, no social class or caste of birth; no one experienced pain or pleasure. ||4||

There were no people of celibacy or charity; no one lived in the forests.

There were no Siddhas or seekers, no one living in peace.

There were no Yogis, no wandering pilgrims, no religious robes; no one called himself the master. ||5||

There was no chanting or med

itation, no self-discipline, fasting or worship.

No one spoke or talked in duality.

He created Himself, and rejoiced; He evaluates Himself. ||6||

There was no purification, no self-restraint, no malas of basil seeds.

There were no Gopis, no Krishna, no cows or cowherds.

There were no tantras, no mantras and no hypocrisy; no one played the flute. ||7||

There was no karma, no Dharma, no buzzing fly of Maya.

Social class and birth were not seen with any eyes.

There was no noose of attachment, no death inscribed upon the forehead; no one meditated on anything. ||8||

There was no slander, no seed, no soul and no life.

There was no Gorakh and no Maachhindra.

There was no spiritual wisdom or meditation, no ancestry or creation, no reckoning of accounts. ||9||

There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kh'shaatriya.

There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer.

There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshipped in adoration. ||10||

There was no Mullah, there was no Qazi.

There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca.

There was no king or subjects, and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. ||11||

There was no love or devotion, no Shiva or Shakti - no energy or matter.

There were no friends or companions, no semen or blood.

He Himself is the banker, and He Himself is the merchant. Such is the Pleasure of the Will of the True Lord. ||12||

There were no Vedas, Korans or Bibles, no Simritees or Shaastras.

There was no recitation of the Puraanas, no sunrise or sunset.

The Unfathomable Lord Himself was the speaker and the preacher; the unseen Lord Himself saw everything. ||13||

When He so willed, He created the world.

Without any supporting power, He sustained the unive

    rse.

He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14||

How rare is that person who listens to the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

He created the creation, and watches over it; the Hukam of His Command is over all.

He formed the planets, solar systems and nether regions, and brought what was hidden to manifestation. ||15||

    No one knows His limits.

This understanding comes from the Perfect Guru.

O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth are wonderstruck; singing His Glorious Praises, they are filled with wonder. ||16||3||15||

While I have my own doubts about ghosts, I think we should remember one thing.

When Guru Gobind Singh was called by Waheguru to come to this earth in a human form to create the Khalsa, he was present at Hemkunt Sahib. Since he existed as an "entity" (where he prayed on a wooden stool), ghosts must exist!!

Being a surgeon may be busy, but a gursikh can always find time to take Guru's hukum. Even though you may be on call all the time (most professions are too).

I say, If you think that you can do seva best as a surgeon, then do it, Guru will fill in the rest of the gaps!

    My 2 cents.
