  1. It was an unfortunate ruling however, this misguided Sikh in his youth HIJACKED a plane. There is NO room for terrorism against civilians in Sikhi, he admits that mistake however there was no way the Canadian government could have overlooked it despite receiving a pardon in Pakistan.

What about the terrorism committed by the state a month earlier killing thousands? According to reports the passengers were not afraid, instead treated with respect and fully informed of the cause, and that they were not in any danger etc

And also how about when two hindu brothers who hijacked a plane to protest Indira Ghandi

  2. Very nice leaflet, great efforts by the Sevadaars.

I was quite amazed reading the list of Gursikhs, its just that I saw some of them as more saintly then soldier but its reasuring that they believed in Siri Dasam Granth too.

I was wondering what was their individual beliefs did they believe in all of Siri Dasam Granth as Bani or just some Bani's

  3. Sikh Channel will not support 1984 related programming or they will try to avoid it as much as possible anyway. According the owner only 50% of Sikhs in the country feel that Sant Jee was in the right, the others feel he was wrong therefore, he does not want to harm the sentiments of 50% of Sikhs. So dont expect much 1984 content on Sikh Channel any time soon. There was a Sarbat 2009 programme commemorating the events of November 1984 and they refused to advertise the event due to its "controversial" nature.

LOL!! And we are the ones giving the "Sikh" channel our money!! Might want to reconsider that! ;)

Surely thats the best reason for having Sant ji's speeches, so that the sangat can hear the truth of what he said and judge accordingly. If we ourselves act as if those great Gursikhs were criminals or terrorists how can we get the international community to think otherwise.

  4. humkire

I am grateful for the response of Harjeet.Singh for giving a perfect example for my point, someone who will not advocate an alternative or take the lead to do something positive to remedy the situation instead just put up a post which is negative and depressing only to hinder the progress of the initiative possibly to justify his own inaction.

And if that is not his intentions I apologise, but it cannot be doubted that the effect will still be the same on those who read this thread, people who may have been willing to sign the petition may now be put off because they may think wrongly thanks to Harjeet.Singh that there is no point in doing so.

These such initiatives will be very productive and positive if we will unite and get behind them are you trying to tell me if the 800,000 or so Sikhs in this country were to sign a petition and show that they did give a damn about the situation in Punjab, but the government of this country would take that lightly the fact that nearly a million people, taxpayers and the electorate are unhappy about a situation.

I'll give you have a perfect example, when Professor Bhullar was extradited from Germany, the German government did not care to put in a clause in his extradition that would restrict India from using a sole confession as evidence to convict him. This is what the American government did when the extradited Singhs on the same charge as Bhai Sahib and thus they are free today. Had we acted properly when Bhai sahib was being extradited we could have forced the German government to make sure that that clause was inputted as consistent with human rights legislation and he would not have been sitting in jail since 1995 or facing the death penalty.

Also in regards to this website as a great forum for debate and opinions, and to highlight current issues. I completely agree the potential is there. However the main debate about things is not enough, once we hear there is a situation we have to do something and to prove this point here is a link to a thread I posted over a month ago :

    http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php/topic/47964-support-needed-for-sikh-prisoners-charity-and-khalsa-aid-charity/page__gopid__443662entry443662

Here I raised the issue of sikh political prisoners who have stood against oppression for the panth, and illiteracy, poverty and drug abuse issues in Punjab and given routes to how the sangat can actively contribute to help two registered charities who are widely recognized, whose work is acknowledged across all Jathebandis for being legitimate and trusted, I only had one response from a Singh who is already part of a great organisation (never forget 84)

Apologies for hijacking the thread, PLEASE support this initiative everyone must sign the petition to show that we all do care, to the government and all concerning both here and in India the number of signatures will show exactly how many people care, and are prepared to take out two minutes of their day for it.

  5. Please members of the Sangat come forward to help support these great Sikhs such as Professor Bhullar, SOPW has managed to release three Singhs this month who have been imprisoned for five to 12 years,

SOPW is the only charity in the world set up solely to the Sikh political prisoners in India and their families.

Support can be anything from helping distribute material, giving talks on behalf the charity, fundraising etc.

  6. humkire bhai sahib/bhenji

I understand your points, but tell me one thing, and I am not being cynical - what are you going

to do about it? I am not being problematic but positive if you choose to come up with a plan

I am willing to support it.

The problem with us is that we all are too concerned with picking points/criticisms/faults etc instead of doing something about it, by the way I am not referring to you but just an observation generally. Everyone

is waiting for someone else to do it , and when they do its never good enough. we have to stop waiting for a leader and recognise the reason why our Qaum was created with every one of us independant is that while having an able leader is great, in the absence of he/she we are all capable of doing a whole lot.

In our history it shows that one or two have been able to do amazing feats

    Bhull Chuk Maaf

  7. Khalsa Aid are a Humantarian Aid charity, and have organised this even to create a forum between various orgs/jathas who are actively working in Punjab to tackle these issue, such as SOPW who work with Sikh prisoner, two prisoners (recently realeased through SOPW efforts) attended the protest.

If you attend the program all Q's can be brought up and discussed.............or you can wear out ur keyboard on internet forums :)

  8. Kabir, marta marta jagg muaa, marr bhi naa jaaney koye,

Aisi marni jo marrey, bahur naa marna hoye.

Kabir, the world is dying – dying to death, but no one knows how to truly die.

Whoever dies, let him die such a death, that he does not have to die again

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh

Sikh Organisation For Prisoners Welfare (SOPW) condemn the brutal disproportionate actions of the Punjab police today, whose actions have caused the Shaheedi of Gursikh(S) (full details yet to be confirmed).

SOPW is working on the ground to ensure that those Gursikhs and families who are being indiscriminately rounded up by the police are supported and backed with legal support, to ensure their civil rights are maintained.

This incident serves as another example of the difficulties faced by Sikhs today, and also an awakening to Sikhs worldwide to act now to support our Gursikhs who are persecuted for standing firm against oppression as per our Guru Sahib's orders.

SOPW had prepared a press release to inform the Sadh Sangat that the release of 3 Sikh prisoners had been facilitated yesterday, Gursikhs who had been imprisoned for 5 - 12 years respectively. Arrangements had been made for these Gursikhs to be met by volunteers of SOPW from England and to be taken to Sri Harmandir Sahib today. However this press release had to be delayed as the Gursikhs having heard of the arrival of anti-sikh elements cancelled the meeting and rushed to Ludhiana to stand once against oppression (a day after being released).

The whereabouts/welfare of these things is unknown and we pray for them, along with the Gursikhs they joined and our beloved Shaheeds.

The bravery of these particular Gursikhs, gives an insight to their Chardi Kala, although largely ignored and forgotten by the Panth, a decade in prison could not break their spirit of righteousness.

Please contact SOPW to find out how you can help support our Gursikhs, SOPW currently has approximately 100 Gursikhs whose only crime is their inability to turn a blind eye to oppression.

  9. Gurfateh ji

I will find out in detail in regards to the 10 singhs, I believe they had TADA The Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act offence charged against them an infamous and horrid piece of legislation used effectively to imprison sikhs by their thousands with no evidence.

They are providing monthly support to approx. 100 prisoners across punjab, delhi and other states.

They have been very active in Davinderpal Singh Bhullars case raising awareness etc. in fact bhai sahib who runs the charity was in prison with bhai Davinderpal Singh Bhullar in Tihar jail (dont wish to elaborate for obvious reasons)

  10. Dhan Dhan Baba Deep Singh ji, Quam Dhay Mahaan Shaheed.

Quoting from a text I received today "all hail, the immortal, the true soorma Bahadur Akali Baba Deep Singh Shaheed , on today his Shaheedi Divas.

Thinking back at this great GurSikh, I could not help but reflect on our sad state of today in comparison. This is because along with Baba ji’s sacrifice, what is also awe-inspiring is the sacrifice of the Singhs with him, who answered the call. Also, much respect and appreciation should go to those Sikhs over the generations who have kept Baba ji’s memory alive in our minds. Gursikhs always had a special place in their hearts for their warriors and their Shaheeds, without whom they would not be here today.

For Baba ji and his Singhs, we can only remember them and aspire to be like them.

But whilst no can compare to Baba ji, what about our warriors of this generation, although they themselves would not wish to be compared to the great martyrs of the past, they too sacrificed everything in the name of Sikhi and for us. They too have gone through hardships and torture we can't even imagine let alone comprehend. Why is it then, that whilst Sikhs of old, have preserve the memory of their Shaheeds, doing everything for them possible.

We have Sikh Prisoners rotting in jail, facing a winter were without even adequate clothing or blankets, and yet when an appeal was made for these Singhs, for whom we all wear T-shirts, thousands of us turn up at marches and demonstrations all of which will have little or no impact on the Singhs themselves, I have yet to receive more than one response from the sangat:

I am sure that Sikhs after Baba Deep Singh ji would have wanted to walk in his footsteps, emulate their hero. But why would the Sikhs of tomorrow care to face injustice and oppression knowing that they will be betrayed, disowned and forgotten about by the very people they stood to defend.

  11. Gurfateh Veers and bhenjis

I am appealing on behalf of two charities to whom we (Akaal Muay Thai) volunteer for. Those that do not know Akaal Muay Thai run a weekly class teaching Muay Thai, aimed at the Sikh population where all of the money from the students (five pounds per class) apart from the hall hire, is donated to Khalsa Aid and Sikh Organisation for Prisoner Welfare. We are independent from these two charities, and chose to donate to them due to their accountability and professionalism.

Khalsa Aid, a humanitarian aid charity which has been running voluntarily for 10 years, practising the message of Sarbat Bhalla have been assisting the needy in all major humanitarian disasters around the world (Indonesia, Africa, Pakistan etc). They have launched a huge project in Punjab aimed at the drugs, poverty issues in Punjab. These issues have resulted in the mass conversion of Sikhs into other faiths such as Christianity.

The Sikh Organisation for Prisoner Welfare is the ONLY charity in the world whose sole mandate is the support and assistance Of Sikh Prisoners in India. Many do not know this but hundreds of Sikhs still languish behind bars in jail from the 80s when many soldiers who dropped out the army refusing to attack their fellow Sikhs were court martialled and sent indefinitely to jail, the few hundred that remain in prison also account for a tiny percentage of the thousands of the youths who disappeared from the land of Punjab. This charity was set up and is run by Bhai Balbir Singh who was abducted by the Indian police and tortured spending many years in jail away from his young family in the UK. Only owing to his British residence, pressure from UK MPs was he finally released a few years ago.

We need help from graphic designers, video editors, web designers to help create a website for the Sikh prisoners charity which will track the progress and support of the prisoners they look after. And also improve the Khalsa aid website so that the right features are highlighted well etc. Due to the ongoing politics in most our Gurudawaras, these websites will be the sole means of contact with the sangat so they need to convey information professionally.

I don't wish to get involved in this recent debate about Babbu Mann’s song, however the need for the work done by the two charities does give some insight.

Khalsa aid is sponsoring children's education and families in areas where other families have had to convert to Christianity in order to fill their belly and educate their children, the sikh organisation for prisoners welfare in the last two months has facilitated the release of 10 Sikh prisoners as well as the bail of Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara’s wife.

We also appeal to all other members of the sangat to help these two charities, your assistance could be fundraising at local gurudawaras, universities or college or through any other skills or abilities you have. All you need to make a difference is the passion and interest for these causes.
