  1. Vaheguroo jee kaa Khalsaa Vaheguroo jee kee fatehh

My advice first would be that you shouldn't be telling people how much paath you are doing. You should keep it gupt as the phal you get for it is lost when you tell people. Others may say differently but many gursikhs I have done sangat with have made a point to tell us that we shouldn't tell anyone.

Secondly, there's nothing wrong with taking a nap. If you're tired/need sleep then sleep. However, many Gursikhs say the Western notion of 8 hours of sleep being optimum is quite generous and we don't actually need that much sleep to function properly.

With regards to changing your nitnem routine, the compulsory rehat for a Sikh is 5 baania (Jap Ji, Jaap, Tv Prasaad Sveye, Chaupai and Anand Sahib) in the morning, Rehraas Sahib in the evening and Kirtan Sohhila before you sleep. This is hukam and not negotiable. You must do this regardless of any other extra path/simran you do. It can't be substituted for other path etc. So as long as you do the prescribed nitnem as mentioned, anything else you do on top is your choice.

  2. fauji07, your right in what you say, I just wanted to know what is an acceptable metal for a Kakkari Kirpaan which should be Sarbloh, for the use of gau-greeb di rakhiya (defence of the weak and oppressed) and more commonly to do bhog to degh.

  3. LOL. OK, so how much carbon is acceptable in a kakkari Kirpaan? Bearing in mind a kakkari Kirpaan should be made of Sarbloh (whatever that means in metal terms).

If Taksali Kirpanaa(n) are made from Kamani Loha, then what is Kamani Loha in English? Sorry if what I'm asking seems repetitive.

  4. The closest I came to the definition of what Sarbloh is, is Wrought Iron which is "commercially pure iron. In contrast to steel, it has a very low carbon content" (Wikipedia - Wrought iron).

I think thats probably what it is unless some other Singhs/Kaurs have more information?

  5. Saadh Sangat jee,

Does anyone know the technical term for Sarbloh in English? Is it simply pure iron or is it wrought iron or something else? Like what our kakkars should be made of if trying to explain the metal in English.

  6. Can't you lot all come together and make one keertan super-site. At the moment theres loads of sites one has to go through to find a track. It would be more efficient and more effective.

My view is stop making more keertan sites and just add the keertan you have to sites which already exist and help make them sites easier to search for keertan. I'm sure all the sites are run by Gursikhs who will be willing to let you help them.

But well done anyway for a new site.

  7. Just a small fire in your garden, maybe in a metal based container so it doesn't melt! Maybe add ghee too, but before I did that I would ask some older gursikhs (I've not actually done the sanskaar of my Kes as of yet, I have them all collected).

To add, when washing Kes make sure those which fall out then are also treated with the same respect.

Taken from Rehat Maryada (published by Damdami Taksaal):

The hairs removed by the kangha are not to be thrown in a dirty place or on the floor. They are to be kept in a clean and dry place/container and when enough hair has gathered they are to be burnt, this is out of respect for the Kes which are worth more to a Sikh than his/her life.

    Hope this helps.

  8. It's not ritual, its kesan daa satkaar. If you don't feel throwing you kes in the bin is wrong then nothing anyone says will change that. No point in arguing.

To the post starter, paaji/penji you have two answers to your original question, throw them away in the kurraa or keep them and do the sanskaar of them. If still in doubt consult 5 pyaare who will be able to advise further as asking on SS will only give you countless points of view.

Vaheguroo jee kaa Khalsaa Vaheguroo jee kee fatehh.

  9. I can't believe some of the replies on this thread especially by ‘V’. Kes have had Amrit in them; they are the mor of Sikhi and significant to a Gursikhs spirituality.

The 5 pyaare in most cases stipulate this in the Amrit Sanchaar, but if not, I advise as the premi’s already have that one collect the Kes which come out when combing twice daily in a suitable container (e.g. bag, box etc). When one has enough to do the sevaa of disposing of them in the respectful way, do an ardaas and burn them. This way is much more respectful than throwing them into the bin where one puts rubbish in; Kes (even those which are no longer on the body) do not belong with rubbish.

I need not mention beant examples of Gursikhan da pyaar for Kes throughout the History of Sikhs.

I suggest V paaji/penji do their research on why Sikhs cremate and not bury aswell as learning the importance and satkaar of Kes in Sikhi.

Vaheguroo jee kaa Khalsaa, Vaheguroo jee kee fatehh.

  10. To clarify Das Granthi as I know it, has 8 baania(n) from Dasam Guroo Granth Sahib. If this is what you want then possibly DTF on Soho Road, Birmingham. Give them a call if you want to - (0121) 515 1183 or 551 7898.

If your after the Granth Shastr has mentioned, then I wouldn't know where to get one from (because I have never heard of that). DTF won't have a Budda Dal Gutka Sahib either..

    Hope that helps.

  11. Das Granthi contains:

Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Shabad Hazare, Shabad Hazare Paatshahi 10, Swaiye, Shastarnaam Mala (Short), Benti Chaupai, Anand Sahib, Barah Maha, Sections out of Krishna Avtar, Laavan Da Paat, Rehraas Sahib, Aarti, Rakeya Deh Shabad, Sohila, Akaal Ustat, Bachitar Natak, Chandi Di Vaar Ukti Bilas 1, Chandi Di Vaar Ukti Bilas 2, Chandi Di Vaar, Oogardanti, Bagauti Astotar, Brahm Kavich, Sansahar Sukhmana, Shastarmala Mantar, Fatehnama, , Gyan Parbod and many other small sections of bania.

Paaji I think your referring to a Gutka Sahib (probably Budda Dal Gutka), not Das Granthi (a compilation of select baania(n) from Dasam Sri Guroo Granth Sahib Jee).

I have Das Granthi printed by SGPC (in August 1998) and contains the following Baania(n) (in this order):

    1. Jaap Sahib
    2. Sabad, Paatsahi 10
    3. Akaal Ustat
    4. Bachitr Naatk
    5. Chandi Charitr 1
    6. Chandi Charitr 2
    7. Chandi Di Vaar
    8. Giaan Prbodh

So to answer your question Shastr, no you are not missing any.

  12. Penji/Paaji it’s important to have santhiyaa - learn the correct uchaaran (pronunciation) before you learn the arth (meanings) and kathaa of Gurbaani. As khalistan_zindabaad suggested one should learn this from an ustaad who has been taught the correct uchaaran and arth himself.

Once you have had santhiyaa you can then go on to learn the arth in more detail which Maharaaj will bless you with if it’s His will.

There are some Singhs in London who currently do the seva of teaching Gurbaani santhiyaa, PM khalistan_zindabaad for more details.

Also a humble benti, please refrain from using ‘the’ when referring to Dhan Dhan Satguroo Guroo Granth Sahib jee Maharaaj.
