for example: the word kirpaan is made from Kirpaa and Aan and we can see meanings of Kirpaa and Aan from dictionaries. But to understand the meaning of word 'kirpaan' we have to read Gurbani. Kirpaan means a sword that is used for doing 'kirpaa' and protecting 'aan'.
