Just came across this photo with the following caption: On 11 Sep 1990 CBI team raided Sajjan Kumar's house to arrest him. As the team went in, a "mob" blocked exit points, CBI team was only allowed to leave once High Court in an emergency hearing granted anticipatory bail to Sajjan Kumar. The team barely escaped death, their vehicles were attacked and all papers were torn. Sajjan Kumar's supporters celebrated their victory by dancing on the smashed CBI car in the picture. In Mr. HS Phoolka's words, the incident showed "the immense influence, political clout, and criminal mindset".

NEW DELHI: Nearly three decades after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination triggered riots that killed thousands of Sikhs, Congress leader Sajjan Kumar will face trial for his alleged role in a murder in Delhi's Sultanpuri area. The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition by Kumar and another co-accused challenging the trial court's decision three-and-a-half years ago to frame murder charges against them. The CBI will challenge before Delhi High Court the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by a city court as it has found "strong grounds" which could form basis of its petition. CBI sources said here today that the agency is likely to wait till the court pronounces its verdict on the quantum of sentence for those found guilty in the case.
