Lahore, Pakistan: Indian authorities urged the faithful to shun the annual pilgrimage to the neighbouring country, fearing for their safety as deadly attacks by Islamist extremists have risen sharply in Pakistan, killing more than 340 people since October. Tensions between India and Pakistan, nuclear-armed powers that have fought three wars since independence, have further increased since last year's Mumbai attacks, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistani militants. But for defiant Sikhs, seeing the sites where their most revered spiritual leader, Guru Nanak, once stood was worth the risk. "I had a strong will this year to visit holy shrines in Pakistan, despite all the a…

Amritsar, Punjab: Nearly ninety prominent Sikh institutions and Gurdwaras across North America and England requested Sri Akal Takht Sahib to take strict action against the heretic Ragi Darshan Singh on January 7th of 2010 for his continued blasphemy against Sri Dasam Bani, Nitnem, Amrit-Sanchar Banis, and the Sikh Ardaas. The Ragi has been re-summoned to appear at Sri Akal Takht on January 7th to explain his position; however he has publicly vowed to disobey the Apex Sikh Takht. If the Ragi fails to appear at the Takht on the requested date, it is anticipated that the formal procedures for his final ex-communication from the Panth are likely to take place. Source: Pa…

Chandigarh, Punjab: After struggling for 28 years, a veteran of World War-II has been finally awarded pension for the service he rendered over 55 years ago. Had it not been for miscalculation by the Army authorities, he might have got his pension years ago. Allowing a petition filed by Harbans Singh, a resident of Kharar, the Chandigarh Bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal also directed that he should be paid three-year arrears, commencing from the date of filing of petition till now. Harbans Singh had served from September 1940 to March 1946. He again enrolled onto the Army in August 1951 and was discharged in March 1955. In 1982, the Centra…

Mohali, Punjab: The most significant slice of Sikh history, the battleground where the Khalsa avenged the killing of the two younger sons of the 10th Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh, may soon be lost to a swank golf range if the recently approved master plan of Mohali is executed. Barely 20 km away from Chandigarh, off Kharar-Landran road, lies Chhappar-Chiri village — once known for its plentiful ponds and mangroves on the banks of Patiala Ki Rao — where in 1710, the brave Banda Singh, anointed general of the Khalsa army by Guru Gobind Singh and sent to stop the tyranny of Mughals, defeated the army of Wazir Khan, the subedar of Sirhind who had ordered the killing of Sahi…

Chandigarh, Punjab: The capacity of plant in Awan village, being set up by American company Azure Power, is proposed to be expanded to 5 MW. Abdullah switched on the plant and expressed his optimism of having more such projects in the coming years. US based Azure Power set up a two MW solar plant. While several states in India have biomass power plants, the solar engagement has been limited essentially to photovoltic cells, and we have not really been able to implement solar power plants given the cost factor. “This experiment of Awan would be soon replicated in entire border belt of Punjab with three solar power plants of 10 MW each in each border district. Punjab has…

Amritsar, Punjab: Some of the panthic leaders joined SAD (A) chief Simranjit Singh Mann in strongly criticising the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for dreaming a Hindu Rashtra. Those present included Giani Gurbachan Singh Jathedar of the Akal Takht, Jathedar Iqbal Singh from Patna Sahib and Jathedar Balwant Singh Nandgarh from Talwandi Sabo. During a condolence meeting in a local gurdwara held on Wednesday to pay homage to the mother of a Delhi-based granthi, former MP Mann warned that the idea of Hindu Rashtra that the RSS chief had floated may revive demand for Khalistan. There is nothing wrong in talking about Khalistan, he observed. Launching a scathing attack on the Chief…

Amritsar, Punjab: A painter-turned-sculptor has a story to tell. Narinder Singh, an eminent artiste, had the urge to do something different and a challenge thrown by a woman made him manifest his inner dream and created a life out a wooden piece. Since then he has not looked back and dedicated his whole life to this form of art. However, for him this art has different perception. “It’s not me who works on wood to express my thoughts, in fact it is the wood itself which uses me to communicate its silent feelings,” says Narinder, who has put up an exhibition of his works at local Art Gallery. Narrating his story about metamorphosis, Narinder is basically an art teache…

Washington: The U. S. Army announced today that it accepted a Sikh officer into its active forces. The officer had sought an accommodation allowing him to maintain his religiously mandated turban and beard while serving his country. The Army's decision is a major step towards ending a 23-year old policy that excludes Sikhs from service. The Sikh officer, Captain Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi, a doctor, was recruited to join the Army's Health Professions Scholarship Program several years ago. He maintained his turban throughout his 8 years of medical education, which included specialized Army training, attendance at Army ceremonies and work in military medical facilities. Nev…

Ferozepur, Punjab: Supporters of the president of the SAD (Panch Pradhani), Daljit Singh Bittu, and several panthic organisations today blocked traffic and staged a dharna on the Ferozepur road outside the mini secretariat against the extension of police remand to Bittu. The agitators sat on the road and started reciting religious hymns for the fast release of Bittu, who, they said, was being targeted by political outfits. Traffic was hit, leading to serpentine queues of vehicles waiting to pass through the area. The police remained on its toes to control any untoward incident arising out of the situation. Water cannons were called in but were not used as the protesters…

New Delhi, India: A trial court on Tuesday dismissed the CBI's contention that it was not under a metropolitan magistrate's jurisdiction to decide on the agency's probe report giving clean chit to former Union minister Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. After almost five months of gruelling arguments with CBI questioning the jurisdiction of a magisterial court on deciding the matter, additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) Rakesh Pandit, in his order, decided to hear the closure report on September 23. Not convinced with CBI's arguments in which they had sought the transfer of the matter to a sessions court, ACMM Pandit said, "This court can take c…
