  8. DSGMC gets Bala Sahib Hospital after legal battle Tribune News Service New Delhi, September 4 The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) today took possession of Bala Sahib Hospital after years of long legal battle in the Delhi High Court. The case was fought by Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). The DSGMC will soon start the hospital to fulfil the dreams of Baba Harbans Singh Ji Kar Sewa Wale who had got the building of 400-bed hospital constructed with the money donated by the Sikh community. Baba had conceived the idea of a charitable hospital to help poor people, said DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK and general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. They said the DSGMC will consult with the civil engineers to examine the building conditions. If it is found fit, the capacity of the beds can be increased to 800. The controversy to run the hospital had started in 2007 when the then DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna had signed a lease agreement with a Manipal company to run the hospital. Later, he signed the same agreement with BL Kapoor. The agreement was challenged in the court by Kuldeep Singh Bhogal. Bhogal had also filed a case against Sarna when he had constituted a trust in the name of hospital. Bhogal had claimed in the court that the hospital trust is illegal. The land of the hospital belongs to the DSGMC that itself is a trust. Today, the court had given possession of the hospital to the present DSGMC, led by Manjit Singh (GK) when the committee had paid an amount of Rs 13.25 crore to B L Kapoor, that is included the principal amount of Rs 12.75 crore. 14. Derby's first Sikh school to open on Monday DERBY'S first Sikh school will open its doors to 120 pupils on Monday, starting a new era of primary education in the city. The Akaal Primary School, with classes for reception year and Year 1 pupils, is housed in temporary buildings in Hartington Street behind the National Sikh Museum. Approval for the free school was given by schools minister Lord Nash in July. As the final touches are being made to the school, which is opening on a temporary site while a permanent location is found and a new school built, the Government announced that it was continuing its programme of free schools. Prime Minister David Cameron said he will "not waver" in his commitment to open 500 new free schools over the next five years as he announced the first wave to be approved this parliament and pledged to deliver two waves of new schools every year until 2020. Akaal primary will join 252 free schools which are already open and is among 52 due to open this September. The Department for Education is continuing to work with Derby City Council to negotiate a permanent site for the school in the Sunnyhill area. Dr Daljit Virk, chairman of Akaal Academy Trust, which is running the school, said: "The school will provide a values-based education and a greater choice of primary schools in Derby. "We are creating an outstanding school where all pupils will achieve highly. Our curriculum will give pupils exceptional all-round development and a life-long love of learning, as well as key skills in literacy and numeracy. "As the school grows, we aim to be the first school in the East Midlands to follow the International Baccalaureate primary years programme." Vicki Kavanagh has been appointed executive head teacher of the new school. She was previously the head of an "outstanding" school in Sandwell, West Midlands. Julie Kennedy will join her as head of school. Akaal Primary School has no specific catchment area and meets the need for more primary school places in Normanton, Pear Tree, Sinfin, Stenson Fields, Littleover, Alvaston, Heatherton, Chellaston and adjoining areas, from where most of the pupils will come. The school will provide 420 places by 2020. Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said: "The free schools programme has sent out the message loud and clear, that parents should never have to settle for anything less than the best for their child. "Right across the country, these innovative, community-led schools are helping to fulfil our One Nation commitment to educational excellence for every child." 19. Inaugural Sikh Youth Leadership Institute a success THE World Sikh Organization of Canada’s inaugural Sikh Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI) concluded successfully in Calgary last week. After taking part in a rigorous application process, 20 Sikh youths between the ages of 18-25, from across Canada, including Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, were selected to take part in the program. Participants gathered from August 14 to 17 to receive leadership training in emotional intelligence, advocacy, community building and social justice. The training program included training by internationally recognized leadership instructor Dr. Rumeet Billan as well as guest lectures and panel discussions with leaders such as Suneet Singh Tulli (founder and CEO of Datawind), Palbinder Kaur Shergill (first Sikh to be appointed Queen’s Counsel in Canada), Bhupinder Singh Hundal (media consultant and former Manager of Omni News) and Sony Singh Ahluwalia (crown attorney, Alberta) amongst others. The 20 graduates of SYLI will be provided ongoing mentorship and opportunities to serve their communities in various capacities. WSO President Dr. Amritpal Singh Shergill said: “The inaugural Sikh Youth Leadership Institute was a great success and highlighted the talent and ability of our youth. The young people selected to take part in SYLI are already doing great work and we are hopeful that they have now emerged with even more skills and training, along with the support of a nationwide network of colleagues, to serve as leaders and advocates for their community.” Short URL: http://www.voiceonline.com/?p=45764 http://www.voiceonline.com/inaugural-sikh-youth-leadership-institute-a-success/
  20. Bhai ji most of the sevadars, raagis, pathis, granthis are from what society considers "low caste" but due to WAHEGURU's grace n change in Karma they are well respected. Most Bhein te Ma di gallan are spoken for corrupt people in power or those who consider themselves as high caste. So our actions play a big role rather than caste in getting recognition in society.

  24. Klang gurdwara AGM rejects lohree bonfire The Lohree celebration will not be making a comeback any time soon at the gurdwara in Klang, Selangor. An attempt by some Gurdwara Sahib Klang members to bring back the bonfire ritual for the Lohree celebration was thrown out by a majoroity vote at its annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday. In a show of hands, the majority agreed with a decision made some by the gurdwara committee some three years ago to stop the practice of celebrating the Lohree with a bonfire and other rituals in the gurdwara compound. That was the main issue at the AGM, one gurdwara member, who attended the meeting, told Asia Samachar. Lohree is a Hindu festival dedicated to the sun god and god of fire. Some Sikhs use it to celebrate the birth of a son, a practice seen as going against the Sikh teachings. When contacted, newly appointed GS Klang committee president Lt-Col (Rt) Sirender Singh confirmed that the lohree topic dominated the meeting. Aside from it, he said the other issues raised were related to the gurdwaras by-laws and the plans to build a new four-storey complex in its existing car park. As requested, we have agreed to comb through the by-laws to get them into proper shape. The current ones date back to the 1960s. There was also a request to introduce secret voting to replace the present show-of-hands, he told Asia Samachar. Sirender said the newly elected team for the 2015-2017 term will also be pressing ahead with plans to build the new 4-storey complex. That would be another major task moving forward, he said. Sirender takes over from Jalar Singh who was president for the two-year term between 2013-2015. Earlier, businessman Jagdev Singh was the gurdwara committee president for two consecutive two-year terms, between 2009-2013, the maximum allowed by the gurdwaras constitution.
