  1. New Sikh free school opens its doors in Coventry Sep 15, 2014 12:06 By Lucy Lynch Deputy head: 'The Seva School ethos is that every child can and will achieve.' Members of the Sikh community who felt let down by Coventry schools when they were children have set up their own school to try to do better. The new Seva School has begun with 130 four to seven-year-old pupils, with plans to increase to 1,450 four to 16-year-olds over the next five years. The newly opened free school is temporarily housed in a former special school in Tiverton Road, Wyken , ahead of a move to a permanent home on a site yet to be announced. Deputy head Suneta Bagri said: The trustees are born and bred in Foleshill in Coventry and want to give something back to the community. They left school with low aspirations in life. They achieved anyway and become professionals but they want better for the next generation of children. The Seva School ethos is that every child can and will achieve. Head Devinder Riat said: We are not full yet but numbers are increasing as word is getting out. Parents are being given an alternative which is a very exciting time. The school is using a maths curriculum based on schools in Singapore, where pupils are regularly ahead of those in other countries. Like many primary schools in Coventry the school is following the International Primary Curriculum, and teachers are using Kagan strategies, a method where pupils work closely together in groups and help each other. The school day begins at 8.30am and finishes at 4.15pm. The last hour of the day is spent in assembly, doing homework under supervision and after school sport and art clubs. There are future plans for extra classes at the weekend as well. Pupils wear a smart uniform of striped tie, navy cardigan with school badge, white shirt and grey trousers. Girls are not allowed to wear skirts for fear skirts wont keep their underwear covered while sitting on the floor. Pupils all arrive by bus to prevent congestion in Tiverton Road . Most are Sikh with a handful from other faiths. Each day there is a religious assembly mid afternoon when children are invited to join in prayer and reflection. At intervals through the day Sikh religious music is played through loud speakers in the corridors. The Seva School is one of three newly opened schools in the city, alongside free school the Muslim Eden Girls School, in Foleshill, and University Technical College the WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Mitchell Avenue, Canley. 3. Rs 600 crore from NRIs, others for Guru Gobind Singh's birthplace Patna: Hundreds of NRIs and businessmen from across India will contribute a whopping Rs 600 crore to develop the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th guru of the Sikhs, on the lines of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, ahead of the guru's 350th birth anniversary in 2017. Officials of the Takht Harmandir Saheb said NRIs from across the world, including the US, Britain and Canada, and businessmen from Mumbai, Delhi, Ludhiana, Kolkata and other cities have come forward to contribute to develop Harmandir Saheb. Around five million people, mainly Sikhs from across the world, are expected to congregate here on the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh. "Funds will not be a problem with NRIs and businessmen expected to contribute generously to develop it," Charanjeet Singh, general secretary of the Takht prabandhak committee, told IANS. Work is already underway to develop and beautify Harmandir Saheb before the 350th birth anniversary, said RS Jeet, an official of Takht Harmandir Saheb. More than 100 workers from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan are working day and night to complete the project. The project includes a golden Guru Durbar on the lines of the Golden Temple. Jeet said the main attraction would be the intricate gold inlay work being done on the ceiling of Harmandir Saheb. "The entire project of gold work will cost Rs 50 crore," he said. Britain-based Baba Mohinder Singh is funding the development of Guru Durbar, that also includes a facility for parking 100 vehicles. The committee is also constructing 100 fully air-conditioned rooms for devotees, and planning an air-conditioned Diwan hall for congregations. Mumbai-based businessmen Iqbal Singh and Surjeet Singh have been funding the construction of 100 rooms for gurdwara staff. The committee has also sent a proposal to the central government for Rs 1,200 crore for all-round development of Patna Saheb and a request for holy city status. Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi said he was keen to develop the Sikh circuit in the state. Manjhi recently visited Takht Harmandir Saheb and promised all possible help to the committee for completion of the project and making the 2017 event a grand success. 4. Bhein ji, You are right about bringing the Change. But majority of Sikhs & Punjabis still have an Arranged Marriage irrespective of Nationality. Which usually means Joint family household where daughter-in-laws have very little say.
  5. Bhein ji, I agree but let us do a Reality Check. How many of the Sikh/Punjabi females get to live their own life. Whether it's education, freedom to choose a career & life partner. Is it right to live in denial ?

  7. Villagers work overnight in gurdwaras to prepare food for flood-hit valley people KAPURTHALA/NAWANSHAHR: Devotees worked overnight in gurdwara kitchens to send fresh langar (food) for flood victims in Jammu & Kashmir. It was a rather odd time for the call to prepare langar, but the response by devotees and volunteers at gurdwaras and deras to prepare food was also unusual. Womenfolk left their homes around 2am to reach gurdwaras and deras of their villages to ensure that langar was ready at the break of the dawn. Villagers had finished their dinner when Kapurthala district administration approached some local Sikh holy men and gurdwaras on Friday night requesting them to prepare langar for the flood-hit people of the Valley. "We requested them in night, but by 6am on Saturday, everything was ready and two pickup vans left for Amritsar airport with 50 bags of packed paranthas/chapatis, vegetables and pickle, from where it was airlifted to flood-hit areas," said Kapurthala deputy commissioner (DC) D S Mangat. Gurwinder Singha, volunteer working with environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seecehwal, said, "We immediately started working like boiling chana (Bengal gram) and potatoes. Messages were sent to women that they would be picked up around 2am to reach deras/gurdwaras to prepare paranthas. Seechewal was first approached by the administration around 8.30pm on Friday for preparing langar. Apart from Seechewal, Sant Daya Singh of Gurdwara Tahli Sahib in Balerkhanpur village, Sant Leader Singh at Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi in Saiflabad village and Sant Amrik Singh in Khukhrain village also started working and summoned their devotees late in the night to prepare food. "We came here around 2am and ensured that langar was ready before 6am," said Gurdev Kaur, who was among 30 women working at Nirmal Kuttiya of Baba Seechewal at Sultanpur Lodhi. In Talwnadi Madho village, 50 women started working past midnight along with some men. In Amarjitpur, some women prepared paranthas at their homes and took these to Sultanur Lodhi by 3am. "We made paranthas as these would remain in good condition even if these can't be distributed immediately," said Sant Daya Singh and Baba Seechewal. Nawanshahr DC Anindita Mitra said at Gurdwara Tibba Sahib, around 10,000 paranthas were prepared overnight and these were sent to Chandigarh airport at 7am. "After looking at the response from people to prepare langar at gurdwaras, we will send freshly-cooked food every morning," said Mitra. In the historical Gurdwara Sukhchainana Sahib in Phagwara, chapatis were prepared throughout the night and these were sent to Amritsar in the morning.
