  1. I have become very fund of learning katha which most often taken from references of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji; however it is often difficult to understand Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji without having someone explain both the meaning in Punjabi and English and explain what is written and the emphasis behind them.

I was therefore wondering if there were any classes one could attend to learn Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Also not be able to speak too well in Punjabi or read gurmakhi, ideally I am looking for someone how could also explain the meanings in English as well.

I think this is a good way to learn about sikhi first hand, as I now wonder how non-indians have learnt about sikhi and about utterances in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

sounds like a great idea and stuff like this should be set up is there anywhere?

  2. Each weapon has its own damage level and ability to seriously hurt (depending on the mindset and skill of the user). Most people are untrained in weapons arts and therefore neglect the implications of using a weapon in a fight.

Firstly if you draw a weapon (including your kirpan) in public, you are liable to be prosecuted, if you use it and hurt someone then the implications become much more serious leading to criminal procedings. You kill someone and then you'll obviously be facing some jail time unless you can without reasonable doubt prove that your life was in danger. Beyond that there will be a knock on effect on the Sikh community regarding the carrying of kirpans. Up until now there have been considerations and acceptance of the kirpan, if usage of kirpans becomes a common occurance then these laws of freedom will have to be changed.

The best idea would be train in some martial art that teaches you street defence for a start, most thugs and crooks on the street are not trained fighters and have little or no skill, a few months of hard training can put you set for most situations in the street. Resorting to using your kirpan at the first instance you feel threatends is not the solution, even if thats what you do, it is likely that you can be manhandled and be stabbed with your own weapon.

If there is any weapon to be used, its your brain, the best form of self defence is not being in a dangerous situation in the first place, be aware of your surroundings and dont walk with your head down or up in the sky, keep an aura of confidence and that will deter most thugs.

Before taking any action, think in your head the implications that it will have.

    AMEN :)

  3. i just got in to sikhi, and want to start covering my head, start with patka, and hopefully go upwards and onwards from there with guru jis blessing, how do you tie a patka, and what material etc etc?

waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh

Girls usualy tie patka with their joora at the back of their heads

  4. In some areas they do have camps for kids which gives them basic knowledge on Sikhi as kids but as they grow we loose contact with them. Most people as kids go to gurdwareh and camps while kids but soon as high school comes they grow out of going to camps etc.. as they are seen just for kids. We need regular meetings at our Gurdwara for teenagers were they can come and learn but also just "chill" Subjects can range from Sikh ethics, to problems the community is facing. The best time for such meeting or gurmat classes would proberbly weekends when everybody is free to attend.

Maybe a Sikh youth organization could be created if their is not already one?

  5. you know what is even worse about reading about the suffering of our brothers and sisters? when the poepoel in control of gurdwaras refuse to acknowledge their suffering and ignore it.

only this week at my local gurdwara the pardhaan switched off the comptuer which was running a presentantion of operation bluestar. he sed you cant show it .

That is just crazy to turn a blind eye to a integral part of sikh history. Try talking to the pardhaan? Its Gurdwareh like this that push people away from spritual wisdom

  6. There needs to be a teaching of moral precepts for the advancement of mind, body, speech and action not just with sikhs but humanity on a whole. I just listened to Harbhajan Singh Yogis talk about leadership we need to take points from them. Its quite evident our leaders do not care about us and just use us as toy soldiers for a false cause.
