  1. I got an email few days back that DiscoverISkhi forums were back online... I tried visiting the website but wasn't able to it just kept on loading and loading an dloading but i have tried at different times and was wondering if they are in fact online or is there something wrong my computer?

So perhaps if you have been to log onto the website, please reply here or PM me with the tech email for discoversikhi.com, I deleted the email from my berry... :(

NOTE TO MOD/ADMIN:- You may close this after a reply is posted. Thanks :)

  2. From my understanding, I think uni's are cheap compared to US/Can but apts can be mucho dinero but then again that would depend on the neighborhood/locale... My bf went to UK for LLM and he was able to find a nice share for about 500$/month though he did have to commute for about an hour... so you should look around... as the uni where you plan to study...

Hopefully someone from UK will answer your ques here :)

  3. You sir, sound like an amazing pimp. Harvard and ex-military... you can write your own ticket. You certainly sound like you have done enough you don't need to worry about winning silly arguments on the internet. No matter what anyone does, there are always people who will find fault with it.

Thank you for your service, and best regards.

    -W

It's not about arguments... It's the fact that youth come on here and read and i don't want them to just get one side LoL...

  4. Contrary to what you are saying, me living in Britain or anywhere else in the globe, doesn't automatically mean I have to start supporting or agreeing with foolhardy military adventurism by the government in power.

You want to play soldier for white man's cause or oil based economics, knock yourself out mate. But please don't be surprised if some of us don't find what you are doing as 'noble' as you might.

Truth is, whether they are right or wrong, you have to follow orders. Personally, I'm not that sort of guy. I don't naievely trust authority like some people seem to do.

What happens tomorrow when another twisted leader starts another conflict based on bull like WMDs or a hypothetical desire to control oil resources? Will you swallow up your conscience and go ahead and kill people defending their own land against invasion like a lemming? See where I'm going with this.....

Anyway, good luck with your recruitment drive.

Without order and discipline you can't have an army... Even guruji's army had order and discipline and followed and obeyed whatever came from up... Personally i believe that every sikh is a soldier, a good sikh stands up for those oppressed... you mention those wars were wrong... many of those not deployed say that... as someone who was... Having served in socom and having in touch with one on one basis with locals in both countires i realized how greatful the locals were for us being there... now their current govt is another story... When you see ppl run upto you and thank you and elders tell you that how they can move about freely, and how girls can go to school without fear, and how they can go to college without getting acid attacked or shot in head point blank... Evenmore i ran into a group of sikhs in kandhar and was greatful to help them move to pakistan from treachery on hands of taliban...

It is how you see it... those who saw it firsthand think differently... some words said go through your heart nd words like those were said to me when i was deployed... things i saw, i wish i could go back again with a might to liberate those who i was not able to help...

I will end this arguement with "Manas Ki Jaat Sabhai Akai Pehchanbau" and a war began with unjust views fought for just... in my eyes is a just war!

Gur Fateh! and if you still like to discuss more please PM me, i don't like "ruining" or "hijacking" posts with "my" own views...

  5. They choose the wars carefully, they didn't naively jump into them without considering the greater moral cause/implications.

And if you "THINK" about it you wouldn't have a war, hence the idea of "diplomacy"...

"To wage a war for a purely moral reason is as absurd as to ravish a woman for a purely moral reason" and again no war is a moral war.. "We make war so that we may have peace" :) Not to mention your "avatar" is a war scene...

  6. Don't go twisting my history because you've gone and bitten off more than you can chew fighting Muslims. I know my history, including that with the British.

I get the feeling you are desperate for help because you are struggling to fight your own battles these days?

Keep your 'protections' too. I'll take my chances looking after myself. If British people hadn't invaded Panjab and then given half away to Muslims on leaving, we'd have probably been quite happy there.

Really, the Brits problems started when they followed Tony 'Pied Piper' Blair's foolish plan to latch onto America. There was no need to invade Iraq.

Whatever faults Islam has, can anyone really deny the historical impact British and American foreign policies have had with training, arming and then giving a cause to jihadis?

Your people made this bed, now you have to lay in it.

Lest get this clear, I am not a Gora but a proud American/British sikh (yes, i hold both nationalities)... And yes, we are fighting ourselves... Both countries have a "voluntary" service and no one is forced to join... I don't see you on the front lines... As per protections.. you are afforded full public service and trust me you utilize it and if you are so sure about yourself, thn why not renounce being a brit or whatever citizen you may hold... and move back to punjab (I love punjab, nothing wrong with it... i spent 8yrs of life there in pind).

  7. At the end of the day, even with many peoples views of the military.... if there were not men out their defending their country none of us would be able to sit on our computers and berate them. I dont know about british, but US army is what you make of it. About 1/4th of my class has used it to pay for school, including many of the top kids in our class. A few kids did army to pay for undergrad... and they ALL say it was a great decision. If you want to serve your country and me a member of the military.... that is a fine and good thing. My biggest regret is not doing an air force scholarship for medical school, even though my wife was against it. A few members of my family went to the service academies, and to say they have done well is beyond an understatement.

Its your decision, and the fact that your considering it is a great thing.

    -W

Well said :) After serving Active duty in both wars and having army pay for harvard tution and much more... only good things came out for me... I always recommend it to those capable, instead of being a burden in US on ed.gov, how about we capable hand earn it... It can help you go to grad school/law/med etc and even bump you up for a govt job :)

Rest is between you, your family... are you willing to do hard work, wake up early, and put your life on the line for your nation??

  8. I provide for myself thank you. "Your" people don't do me any great favours. You should be thankful for us generally working so hard and causing so little grief here.

    Keyword: indirectly

I think the period stretching from the mid 1800s to the end of WW2 is more than enough support for Brits. Now try fighting your own battles. Or is it that you are struggling to do this these days?

You are here for the "protections" this nation provides to you... least you can do is take part... don't forget your own (sikh) history

Maybe your own people can try opening their mouths about our political problems in Panjab instead of continually ignoring it for a start?

Each state has right to it's domestic affairs and no democracy will directly take part in anothers unless dare needs cal for such.. ie. libya

Many of the parents are genuinely scared that their children (especially daughters) may adopt the promiscuous, hedonistic, anything goes culture of many Brits, which is fair enough in my eyes. If goras want to live that, then good luck to them, nothing wrong with it. But if other communities don't want to encourage that type of stuff and keep their children away from its influence - fair play too.

    Cultural relativism

    Sorry I don't understand this?

This very issue has been discussed here many times...

Does anyone know if there is any British army recruitment happening outside Gurudwaras in Southall ??

Sorry Veer ji, for "hijacking" your topic... i hope someone will answer you soon or perhaps PM or you could contact gurghar directly

  9. Correct me if am wrong but personally i think Sikhs should check "Block 16 C - Indian" and if you really want to be specific "Block 16 C - Other, Sikh/or/Punjabi", as the Census data is used to allocate and determine grants and programs for the public and us alienating ourselves from rest of the Indians will be doing a disservice to our community and retroactively other Indians, as honestly we won't be able to muster enough responders as Sikhs to qualify for grants/programs for our public and or non-profits.

    Thank you.

  10. As we live in a democarcy..and a democracy is based on demographics...so in theory the majority rules...my question is should gursikhs have as many children as they can financially handle....should we be looking to have 4,5,6,... kids just to increase our population??...doesnt more numbers mean more votes which means more influence?....just look at the muslim population in britain...it jumped from 50,000 to over 2 1/2 million in just a couple of decades...should we following this route or not?? won't we feel more secure as a larger community than a smaller one...

Another example is the ultra othodox community (haredi) in israel who have on average around 6 -8 children each :0 ...this is actually worrying the secular jews in the country..because with their growing popualtion is coming growing power and influence in the government...as were seeing with the settlements in westbank and east jerusalem..

Just curious what my fellow brothers and sisters think about this...

CORRECTION: We don't live in pure democracy, there hasn't been one in existence ever... A majority rule or direct democracy will give birth to what in politics is known as "Tyranny of Majority" thus all governments recognize this thus the bicameral system of representative government we see around the developed world.. If one change that is long overdue in general old English common law countries is the system of "Checks and Balances" Jews in US recognized this thus becoming more active in politics...

Sikhs need more public policy and political scholars and activists not fundamentalists or doctors or engineers for that matter...

  11. People kill people...with guns.

All i'm saying is there's a reason why Bhatindians are known to be shounkee for keeping rufflan. wink.gif

Lest not change the issue at hand dude... who cares who has more guns LoL... What will a gun do if you ain't man enough to fire it?!? Anyhow...

Anyone here from Bathinda district, please take appropriate steps for agenda setting with your local elected officials, after all they drink or eat produce that utilizes the same water...

As per Mr. Singh559 please read "The Man Who Was Almost A Man" ;) There is a great world (and literature) out there, we need not to live in the bubble of being jatt or punjabi or sikh for that matter...

  12. Having spoken to visiting Professor to GNDU from Kentucky Uni, the above stated (topic starters) findings are in fact true. There is no need to bash any government or entity, it is in it's simplicity nature taking its toll. The solution suggested by the professor was to set up US like water treatment plant and have water pipeline for drinking water at minimum to all effected residents. It is up to to the constituency to set the agenda so the state and national government can go about the policy process for implementation, but then again we all know how people in India waste away water and with home water delivery will come a water bill, which i doubt anyone is willing to pay.

Solution:- Set Agenda and implement the plan to provide clean water to those who are affected in such manner that everyone regardless of income can afford the basic necessity for life...

As per Bathinda having the most gun licensed people in Punjab... total BS, i did a study on Indian Arms Act of 1962 a while back and the highest gun licensed/ownership (ownership doesn't mean license) area is Dist Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Fazilka due to it's closeness to Indo-Pak border and has been the case since 1971.

  13. Growing up, life was all fun and i don't remember much, except when i was sent to India at the age of 5 to live with my great-grandmother who was reluctant to leave our "Haweli" in the pind and only came to states during like special occasions with her and Great-Grandpa (ie weddings etc) ... Amazingly, from Year 0 thru 14, it seems like there are only few memories i could recall fully and they all happen to be the time spent in India. When she passed away, I came back home to US with my great-grand father and forever locked that Haweli, and never looked back...

Now that i am all grown up (LoL), lately i have been thinking a lot about that pind, friends i made (where will they be, what will they be doing), and most importantly of my great-grandma and the Dharan's she used to sing to me before i went to bed and the friends i made while i was there...

My life was anything but ordinary for an American born kid, went to sarkari school in iind, rode majj's, bath in shapar, went for a swim at "sua", almost never wore chapal, messed with master ji's motorcycle, and who could forget pind's lala ji's saudey di dukan and pind's so called doctor lol... and many more memories...

The reason for this post is because years have passed since these days and over-time i forgot the songs my great-grandma used to sing and so devotedly made sure i remember them... I would appreciate if someone here could help me recalling... I asked around and no one at gurdwara seems to know... probably because very few people knew or saw or lived with their great-grandma's or are from pinds...

The one i did really like to know went something like this:-

1.) Chakian te peesan sat kartar, babar de kail khaney...

Also, If you do know something similar to this Dharna... PLEASE POST!! Thank you. I want to compile all the ones my great-grandma used to sing or perhaps more...

  14. People like him make or created uncomfortable times for Sikhs all over the world. Before we can begin to point out things in other people, we must look deep within us and fix ours...

You think so? Funny how the passengers aboard the flight specfically stated that the hijackers treated them with utmost respect and this was conveyed to the media throughout the world, along with the message and exposure of the Sikhs plight in Hindustan.

The point is "HIJACKED"... A Murder is a murder, whether for good or bad... Every action one takes, he takes thinks he or she is doing it for good, and for a minutetheir gets tunneled vision and forgets how the other might perceive it...

My reply was to your comment on how it "created uncomfortable times for Sikhs all over the world."

IT doesn't refer to just this one incident, it's incident like this one and yes including this... I was in Afghan the past year and i remember we were in remote area towards Pak border and came upon a mini group of Sikh afghani's who we initially though were muslim's as they dressed and talked and everything as such... Then i heard one of them say something and i couldn't believe but it was punjabi... I told me team to stand by and let me talk to the elder of the group... I talked with him and as surprised as i was he was too... I told my team that the group of houses is clear and that they are friendly, but one my Sgt questioned me so i told him and his response, was that with all due respect sir, Sikhs been known to hijack, blow up people, kill them just like everyone else... I didn't have an answer for him so i gave go ahead for search of the ppl and their mud huts...

Now, tell me who gave the chance that a Sgt could say something like that, our ppl did such things so the Sgt said, i could've said no sgt and that we're not going to search these ppl, but that would ve meant me getting personal... but luckily the poor ppl didnt have no weapons, instead asked us if we could bring them clean water, blankets, look after an elderly woman (104yrs old) who had slipped about a month ago and prob broke her hip... I had one of our LTs look at her, take her to FOB for x-ray and treatment, and i talked with her and that talk which lasted about an hour changed my entire view on Sikhi... And i feel ashamed to say that boy oh boy we have LOST everything, i used to feel ashamed bc i am not keshdhari or amritdhari, i been to mehta, ludhiani sc, and learned about gursikhi from ppl like sant maskeen an di always felt bad that i was mona and w/o rehat but not anymore :(

I used to feel bad if i didnt go to gurudwara but now its been prob 17mnths... and i dont feel bad at all, in reality and honesty being the best policy, i don't feel like going ever again...

I was pro khalistan, pro everything, now, when someone tells me they want khalistan for the panth, you know what i tell them, well before we find khalistan, we have to find the khalsa... we can worry about stan ltr... Ppl say our panth is being destroyed, you know what we don't have a panth left to be destroyed....

    :(

  15. Its doesnt seem to have any logic behind it.

    no kidding :D

"The following are all major sins:

Killing a Brahmgyani, killing a cow, killing or selling your daughter,

And eating from a person who has no moral discipline.

Anyone who commits any of these sins has committed thousands of sins,

This egotistical individual will be reprimanded thousands of times."

    (SGGSJ Ang 1413)

Damn... so i guess when on thanksgiving, some soldiers in afghanistan bought a cow from a local and asked me, "Sir, whats the easiest way to cut this thing?" and i was oh don't worry lets prepare a meal together... LoL I guess i'm a sinner... :(

But, if i remember how translation of gurbani works from my time at Mehta (India) and looking at SGGS, the actuall gurbani tuk translates to, "If a Brahmin kills a cow or a female infant, and accepts the offerings of an evil person, he is cursed with the leprosy of curses and criticism; he is forever and ever filled with egotistical pride. One who forgets the Naam, O Nanak, is covered by countless sins. Let all wisdom be burnt away, except for the essence of spiritual wisdom. ||4||"

So, when you break it down in simple lingo, In this case third guru is telling us that a brahmans believe or are superstitious and say that if brhamin kills a cow or infant etc is cursed, brahmins believe this to be a wisdom something they know will hapen, HOWEVER, guru ji's saying, that the one who forgets NAAM will suffer or be cursed, and that let us forget the wisdom (in this case what will happen if i killed a cow), and just focus on the wisom of waheguru's naam. :)

  17. I remember during med school, my friends and i and our professor were having discussion over where would we go to volunteer and stuff and i remember my best friend Craig was like, "No offense, Dean but i think i will go anywhere but India." I was like wow whats wrong with India, he was like people in India starve to death, because they are dumb. He was like hey, if i had a family of seven to feed lived in a ghetto and saw a wild cow run by my house, instead giving the cow something to eat because she's a goddess or whatever, it will the cow giving me and my family not just something but a whole lot to eat... LoL

Anyhow, that was a real life joke and my friends view on Cows... haha, yes, i eat beef, and anything else... I think there's no difference and that people jus BS when they say oh i only eat chicken etc, because i think the point is, whether you are taking the animals life or not over which animal... and hey if you won't eat it, someone else will :p

  18. Hijackinga plane is not only a crime but an act of terrorism, a way to scare and spread propaganda. He committed crime, whether it was in Canada, India, or Pakistan, or wherever, he must face the consequences of the actions he took knowingly. I totally agree with the decision of Canadian Judiciary, as an act of violence is always an act of violence no matter how many years pass or how much of social worker or transitioned person you have become. Just as Doctor loses his license to practice after he commits a felony, no matter how good of a practitioner he was, it's not about his medical or in this case his legal skills, IT IS ABOUT BEING HUMAN, MORAL, AND ETHICAL. Practicing law is not a right, it is a privilege, just as driving a car or flying on a plane is.

Though we was charged and served his time in Pakistan, being that the flight was Indian Airlines flight, being that IA is flag carrier of India, he could and possibly will be charged in India. I like how he regrets his actions after wards, but he should have thought of that earlier, it's like a bullet that you have fired and it will never return to chamber again.

People like him make or created uncomfortable times for Sikhs all over the world. Before we can begin to point out things in other people, we must look deep within us and fix ours...

  19. I feel constantly on edge as if something bad is going to happen and i feel guilty for not making more of my life or making life easier on my parents. I try to make them happy as best I can. I've reached the grand age of 30 and my parents have been looking for someone 4 me for a few years. I haven't found anyone yet.

I wear a pug and have uncut kesh but i have not taken amrit. This sort of leaves me in 'no man's' land. most sikh girls want a clean shaven bloke, those who want a guy with a pug tend to be amritdhari and since i am not amritdhari things wouldn't work out. Also I am tall and overweight so that is a big factor as well.

My parents plan to go to India with me soon and find a girl from there. But i am very very worried about whether i will find a girl there who will want to marry me. Its been years since i was in india (1998) and i guess lots of things have changed. I've heard stories of girls marrying guys and leaving them once they get their UK / USA / CANADIAN passports.

Has anyone else gone through anything similar? I try to think posative things but marriage is just a big step and you have no idea what the other person is thinking or hoping for?

Well first of all be positive, India has changed a lot, trust me i just got back like a week ago... I don't believe in the BS about my mom and dad finding me a girl to marry... and neither do they :) I have a girl friend and we been together for quite awhile now (lets not start a fight over that ppl... stay out of my business). Veer ji, i'm in my 20's, and my advice to you is, have faith in waheguru, whatever he does he does for a reason. As far as your health goes, you should watch your diet and exercise, as a sikh your are supposed to be healthy mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

You will find some1 special, whether she be indian or gori or whomever, someone who makes you feel comfortable. Veer jio, one advise, you will get a lot of rishtay in india based on your UK passport but dont fall for it... Indian oldies tend to find a "moti sami" for you to marry just bc your a foreigner, well don't do that. Find a girl that you like, and that she likes you too, and don't care about how rich she is because its not how much "sona" she gives you matters, but rather how much she loves and cares for you and how much you do in return for her.

I believe marriage is a boat, heavier you will load it good it will sink, rather make it strong and big with love :)

  20. Just tell your mom and dad, believe in Waheguru... and seriously who cares about people??? You have to learn how to be happy with yourself, accept yourself for who you are and were... No sin is forgiven, but who are you, me, and people to constitute what a sin is??
