  1. I must say, I agree with Temporary.

If you're on orthopaedics, any infection to a wound site can be potentially fatal. it's better to take the hit yourself, Waheguru will know that your actions are altruistic. I agree that it's unfair about the wedding rings issue, but that doesn't matter - we must protect our patients first!

But, if you do want help and assistance, you've got it. Just mobilise the troops, so to speak ;)

Wedding rings are not unfair at all, b/c you are supposed to be following BSI standards, thus gloves serving as barier b/w pt and mp...

I just wanted to mention this before you guys go on mobilizing and at the end are told, "duh, shouldn't you be wearing gloves???"

No need to remove the ring, unless ofcourse you got a 'phat' one or don't wear gloves...lol

I have no idea what BMI standards are - we don't use that term in the UK! But if your say palpating an abdomen, performing a peripheral neuro exam or something like that, no one ever wears gloves. Only for invasive procudures or checking wound healing etc would one don gloves. Hence, the blanket ban on kareh but allowing of wedding bands IS unfair. But again, I don't particularly mind it because if it protects patients then it is justified in my opinion

Is that seriously true? LOL, Here is US before you touch a patient you put on gloves, but there are exceptions such taking vitals etc.

    Hi.

I''m in A&E NTGH and have never had a problem in the West Midlands or Northumbria Trusts. Here we have a bare-below-elbows-policy, but under the Trust policies there are exceptions for what they term as 'culturally sensetive.' I am not amrit-cchak, but even so I always wear my kara. When I did theatre work it would always go into my pocket, in my scrubs, under the gown.

I would in the first instance go and speak to the Clinical Director (assuming you are a doctor) and explain what you can forsee, becoming an issue. Also write a letter to Infection Control. Explain that the kara is steel (no need to go into details ie iron, sarabloh etc) and that when you wash hands, you also gel or wash your kara. Explain its religious significance (details not neccessary) and the need for you to wear it. Wedding bands are worn for cultural-superstitious reasons ie some English people think its a curse to remove them and these harbour more bugs than anywhere else because of the engravings and tight fit. The kara is smooth and not snug against the skin ie it does not trap bacteria. They will have to let you wear it. As a last resort get a petition from all the Sikhs working in the Trust from tea ladies to porters to docs and nurses and admin staff.

I never wear gloves all the time between patients as it is impractical, and lacks evidence base as an effective barrier against the bugs that they are tring to be rid off. Further more a human touch is a humane touch and part of the doctor-patient interaction. If a patient is socially clean there is no need for such barrier when doing simple examinations or taking bloods.

All the best and please post the outcome.

Veer Ji, that's a great and helpful e-mail! I do the same - in surgery i just pop my kara in my back pocket. it's just really annoying when you forget, and sit down really hard on a hard stool. not a lot of fun :S lol

I think the bare-below elbows policy has some merit but the BMA wrote an article saying it could potentially cost lives, because if doctors can't acurately count the pulse rate or resp rate and we guess, it could potentially impact on patient care. they asked 100 doctors to guess someone's pulse without a watch and only 3% got it right. of course, i think the BMA was just moaning about it because in practise most rooms have a clock and most A&E departments would have a pulse oximiter handy. just thought i'd share this, that's all!

Tell that AMA in US... no wonder ppl come to US for best medical care...lol

  2. There are somethings that don't make sense, such as brar says that "medical examiner confirms that they are pakistani", seriously, I would love to learn from indian me's the technique of identisying nationality by examining the body...and by looking at the geographic area, punjab to pakistan is like new york to new jersey, and having the ability to determine so would probably make me the best me... ever

Seriously, lies, lies, and more lies... seems like they were and still are following the Nazi propaganda, "Make the lie big, make it simple, repeat it, repeat it, and repeat it again, eventually people will believe it." - A. Hitler, Mein Kampf Chapter 10

By medical examination he meant that they'd hav been stripped naked and checked if they were circumcised, and he's pointing on the fact that they nihang was infact a muslim and that makes him a pakistani. Lies upon lies.

Didn't we have muslims in India? That was so bull, their way of making lies.. Sikhs terrorists and what not..

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda

Thanks for that, I was actually looking for that quote on Hitler's memoir...lol

At the heart of this year’s experience will be to provide an environment that supports the learning of Gurmat and helps to live in accordance with the guidelines laid down by our Gurus. In addition, we will explore the “burning questions” of the youth and discuss how important it is to understand the role of Khalsa Panth. With your active participation, we hope to achieve these goals and explore the many facets of the Sikh Religion.

  5. Look at you bunch of jokers ,so what if they are moneh, does that mean they cannot support Khalistan?Do they not have family in Panjab?Do they not have feelings - you clowns should encourage them rather then make stupid comments - you fools,If Khalistan is only for Amritdhari Sikhs and no others - I suggest the freedom movement be dissolved!

Khalistan is for all Sikhs, and the Sikh Community not matter how far they are in their Sikhi !!!!!!

I'd like to see the people from India who diss these boys wear Khalistan shirts if they such tru big Sikh Soormehs

Veer, my cousin just went to india and YES, he wore a khalistan t-shirt and had it on when he landed in india. I spoke with him, he said ppl were looking at him but they didn't say anything to him :D (lol) He has a laissez-faire passport issued from UN... :D

  6. Situation:

    Pinderfield's General Hospital: Ward Physiotherapy...

Problem: Infection control Warden States "I am not allowed to wear Kara."

Situation: Explained to them I am required to wear it as they allow wedding bands.

Current status: unknown, is there any prescedence organisation who can back my case?

    Regards

Veer, I'm in EM and i would suggest, please take off your kara and whenever you are allowed to put it back on do ardas and put it back on. I work in emergency medicine and on my calls, i take off my kara, mundri (lol), simrana. Its for something we call BSI in emergency medicine in US (don;t know about uk), however i keep my kirpan on as its under my clothes. Hope it helps, and its for your and wards safety as there and standards in medicine, and i always tell everyone to follow them. Please do obligue. Thank you.

  7. Sangat Jio, At first, I'm sorry as the whole gurbani should be our favorite but there are some shabads that we like to read, recite, or listen to a lot more often. Please post you favorite here, it would be great if you can post it in Gurmukhi, Punjabi, and English also. An audio recording if you have or know of link to one would also be great.

NOTE: Please NO BRAVO's, Just post the Shabad, no praising, matha taking etc.

    Gond, Fourth Mehla:

Serve such a Lord, and ever meditate on Him, who in an instant erases all sins and mistakes.

If someone forsakes the Lord and places his hopes in another, then all his service to the Lord is rendered fruitless.

O my mind, serve the Lord, the Giver of peace; serving Him, all your hunger shall depart. ||1||

O my mind, place your faith in the Lord.

Wherever I go, my Lord and Master is there with me. The Lord saves the honor of His humble servants and slaves. ||1||Pause||

If you tell your sorrows to another, then he, in return, will tell you of his greater sorrows.

So tell your sorrows to the Lord, your Lord and Master, who shall instantly dispel your pain.

Forsaking such a Lord God, if you tell your sorrows to another, then you shall die of shame. ||2||

The relatives, friends and siblings of the world that you see, O my mind, all meet with you for their own purposes.

And that day, when their self-interests are not served, on that day, they shall not come near you.

O my mind, serve your Lord, day and night; He shall help you in good times and bad. ||3||

Why place your faith in anyone, O my mind, who cannot come to your rescue at the last instant?

Chant the Lord's Mantra, take the Guru's Teachings, and meditate on Him. In the end, the Lord saves those who love Him in their consciousness.

Servant Nanak speaks: night and day, chant the Lord's Name, O Saints; this is the only true hope for emancipation. ||4||2||

wow.. but at first i thought it was the MEAT all over again.. lol

  10. Lol.. seriously, a confession, i might've been to a great school etc, but i still (seriously) don't know the difference between than and then... :D

Wow!! :o Not even at Harvard they teach you that!! Glad I didn't go there!! Than is like.. "10 is greater THAN 1". Then is like "I'm going there then." Got it?

Actually, lot of people tell me that and i still forget... you know somethings just make home in your head, so, now i always google "then" and "than" whenever i'm writing a paper... lol

  11. It's embarassing to read articles by Singhs where they mix up 'there' ,'their', 'where', 'were' etc. How do you expect to be taken seriously?

To be honest, until I was in University, Freshman Year, I always used to mix up there and their and even too and too. I also never used to use commas properly until I had my first job and had to write a lot of emails to various people on a daily basis. I just picked it up. :BL:

Lol.. seriously, a confession, i might've been to a great school etc, but i still (seriously) don't know the difference between than and then... :D

    ahhmm! (cough)

    grammar....

whatz standard English?? Americans eng standard VS. Brit. Eng.?!?!?!

so before any of u say lets use proper grammar/Standard English..please let us know which standard are we going to be using? :p now go on and have a debate and let us know who won...and then we will try to learn that grammar to post our thoughts here! (and maybe also hire a tutor who can check our grammar and help us improve...cuz i sure need one.lol :umm: )

    nyhow..

    waiting for more replyz lol

    toddles!=)

    wjkk wjkf!

We should use the counselor English (also known as universal or UN English)...lol

  12. One thing i wanted to mention was that "talikhak" mentioned that it was free thinker like guru nanak and waris, bulle shash etc who helped keep "our" lanaguage alive. To claer things up gurumukhi wasn't used or known of unil GURU ANGAD DEV JI. Waris, Bulla etc used Urdu mixed with Sarda script of Sanskrit. Before Guru Angad Dev ji devised Gurmukhi, gurbani was written in Sarda script.

And if GURU ANGAD DEV JI wanted they could've changed it to Punjabi but they didn't. Punjabi spoken is mix of written Sarda and spoken Urdu, and was called Gurumukhi back then we call it punjabi because its form Punjab. BUT THE MAIN POINT IS GURU NEVER CHANGED THE LIPI INTO "PUNJABI"... then my question is, who are we manmukhs changing it...

  13. NOTE: If you plan on attending the parade and you live on east coast, please call your guru ghar and ask them what time they are going to leave for the City. Sangat is advised to come with/on their gurughar's buses. There is no parking available anywhere near the parade route in the city. Private parking has been reserved for sewadars, guest speakers, and police only.

Any questions, please call your local gurughar (yes, all gurughars are participating) or if you still plan on making the trip yourself, call 732-541-6000 and ask for Bhai Harinder Singh Ji or call Richmond Hill Gurughar at 718-846-9144.

  14. That is a good way to get people know, but what needs here to be done is that Sikhs in UK ask for a meeting with the Home Office, i am pretty sure if enough sikhs do gather asking for a meeting they will be willing to sit down and have a talk.

I'm from US and don't really know much of UK, so if you are from UK, please ask your gurughars to organize a meeting. I don't know about UK but here in US, all gurughars meet once a month on each coast, which i think is a great way to talk things out etc... just a mere suggestion for uK guru ghars.

  15. mann_kaum_layee_qurban mentioned the free tibet movement, well i feel no shame whatsoever saying that i oppose it and if you ask i so do of khalistan, respectively. There are reasons, which must be considered, discussed, reviewed, and reviewed again upon. Its like building a house or having a family, you need not just the land but the frame, ceilings, bricks, walls, windows, doors, and what so not. Tibetians demand their theocratic state just as we do of our own, states can't be run based upon religion only (and please don't reply that i'm denouncing panths ability to run khalistan). We have seen over the period of times, as empires rose and fell over nothing but, religion. At one side we seek peace, unity, and waheguru's name on the other hand we seek khalistan. Well, as per my understanding waheguru's sikh only seeks one thing and that is 'his' naam. And yes, dalai lama has said this himself, that he seeks not an independent tibet but a tibet that resides with peace and unity with the humanity chanting lord's name...

Well, at the end everyone has their opinions and i have mine.

    Fateh!

  16. Debate about freedom of expression after several students went to school on Friday with unique t-shirts carrying a possibly controversial message.

About 20 Sikh students showed up at Surrey's Princess Margaret High School wearing black t-shirts with white lettering that reads "Khalistan" on the front.

The shirts endorse the man who once led the controversial movement in India in the 1980s, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, which ended in widespread riots and violence.

Bhindranwale was killed in 1984 in India after the country's army led an uprising to storm the Golden Temple.

"(A teacher) asked me to take off the shirt, but I wasn't wearing anything underneath I didn't have anything else at school, so they said put on a jacket so I had to put on a jacket and zip it up," said one student, who declined to give his name.

"They're saying it's politics in the school, and the school doesn't do politics, you're not allowed to wear political shirts, right. But this has nothing to do with politics."

On the back, the t-shirts read "While we live, we shall live with dignity, when we die it shall be for the faith."

But some witnesses say they also saw similar t-shirts with images of AK47s on them, although the students deny that claim.

The students who wear the shirts say they are simply expressing their religion.

Dough Strachan, communications manager for the Surrey School District, says the issue is not just black and white.

"The school is trying to work through the problem," he said. "It is asking those involved to be respectful to everyone's points of view."

Strachan would not clearly say whether the board will condone or reject the students' position.

"It's difficult, or maybe even unfair to say this is acceptable ... and this is not, at least to some extent."

But at least one student says he will probably wear the shirt again.

"I don't care," he said. "Our tenth guru said, when all means of addressing the wrongs have failed it is righteous to raise a sword."

WE STAND SHOULDER 2 SHOULDER WITH OUR CANADIAN BROTHERS , BRING IT ON INDIA

All the people wearing t shirts are clean shave. What religion are they trying to represent. I understand If you have turbun wearing these t shirts make sense.

Khalistan is not a religion it is a struggle for independence which includes all members of our community,I salute these guys for being moneh and wearing the shirts, normally moneh don;t give a crap nice to see them supporting the movememnt for freedom, they have feelings as much as we do ,someone said on the forum in every mona there is a sleeping lion lke Jinda/Sukha

Oooo, You should definitely visit NJ/NY and when you do, as per your views, you probably think its the whole khalistan Zindabad Force here.... Because if wearing t-shirts and khandey makes you Sikh and makes you feel they support themovement, this is THE place you should send some missionaries to preach and have a gathering...

    Seriously....

And if you or anyone else believes that wearing t-shirts and khandey and what so not supports the movement or the panth at all, well, i'm ready to spend everything that waheguru gave me and every penny that by 'his' kirpa i make from job, in buying t-shirts and giving to people so they can wear them...
