  1. you shuld find a way to make time for doing paath focussed and proprely...

but if you're finding it impossible to do this, then i'd say at least do the cd, and try hard to focus on the paath, cuz it's very easy to let the mind wander when you're just listenin and not doing.

  2. Vaheguru,

This is a recording of aasa di vaar. If memory serves me correctly, it starts with Chhaka #3.

in terms of reading it.. if you have a "taksali" sundar gutka, there's usually asaa di vaar in it. you can read it there..

the first three minutes of the track are one chhaka (stanza) of aasa di vaar.

    the shabad

"raam rattan heearay sang raakh" is part of the line "mil saadhu saran gaho puran, raam rattan heearay sang raakh", and is found at the following link..

    http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=640

she then goes to the next chhakas of aasa di vaar.

note that the "chhants" of aasa di vaar and the "saloks" of aasa di vaar aren't written together in Guru Granth Sahib.. the chhants come i believe on ang 448 of guru granth sahib, and the saloks come a couple pages later... so your best bet is to either find a "Khalsa Brothers" amrit keertan and asaa di vaar is in the middle of those... or find a taksali sundar gutka and find asa di vaar in there..

    hope that helps

  3. vaheguru!

thanks so much for the sticky, i hope people still see it!

Anyways, over the weekend, two people made extremely generous contributions, so 200 dollars has now been raised.

Still far away from the 1500 dollar goal, but hopefully we get there.

Benti to those who have blogs, if they could post this information on their blogs... tax receipts will be made available as well.

  4. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa

    Vaheguru Ji Ki Fatehh!

    Hi everyone,

As you may remember, I participated in an event last year called the Stroll for Liver, inaugarated last year in memory of all those who have been afflicted and have succumbed to Liver Disease.

The Ottawa walk was done in honour of Trisha Nagpal, a cousin of a close friend of mine, who shockingly and unexpectedly passed away because of Liver Disease.

Last year, you, the sangat, helped me set a record by raising more than 1,000 dollars in a week, more than any other participant in one week. Last year, however, I was a major procrastinator, and only fundraised for the week prior to the event.

This year, I would like to raise 1,500 dollars, and could use all the help I can get. The event is June 3rd 2007, so I can fundraise until that date.

Credit Card Donators will also have the ability to claim their tax receipt immediately online, and can make their donation here:

I appreciate any help, and thank you for your support.

  5. yeah... someone private messaged me those same three questinos.. i brought up the real estate market and everything too...

it seems the problem is that people think the problem in stock markets is that it is all about wealth maximization.

i'd suggest that working overtime is wealth maximization too, then...

owning your own business is probably the same thing..

that leads me to believe that some people may think that in order to be a good sikh, you must work for someone else.

If that is the case, then I must say, I disagree wholeheartedly.

you don't invest in stocks looking at one year, two years or even three years.. that's why the analogy of betting on sports is so stupid.

In the NHL, for two years in a row, the winner of the stanley cup has been from the southeast division... if you only took that as your research, it would be so stupid to put all your money in the atlanta thrashers or tampa bay lightning just cuz they're from that division....

stocks are much different.. if you don't wanna see the difference, that is your perogative.. don't be so closed minded to say that there is no difference, you're not fooling anyone.

  6. chalo.. clearly you disagree.

For my education, could you please point out which parts were not important and were irrelevant? Help me become a more focussed debater, please.

I was pretty sure most of the stuff i said was on topic, but if you disagree, please show me where so i can improve in the future.

    Thank you

    Vaheguru

  7. btw...

considering your analogy of the rockets vs jazz:

    who is the target market?

what are the revenues and expenses?

what is the historical risk premium?

how do you quantify the general risk of "investing" in a sports team like that?

and furthermore, how would you define your expected return compared to that of the general risk that's undertaken in such an "investment"? (i put them in quotes, cuz you think it's the same thing as a stock)

have you run a regression of winners in the past?

what are the competing teams offering as products?

have you looked at fundamentals in your analysis?

how do you plan on diversifying your risk away?

    Don't you agree there's a massive difference?

Corporations are long-term entities, and sports teams can change on a year to year basis. Very rarely are such massive restructurings engaged into that companies entire focus, missions, and goals change year-to-year. In fact, that's a prime candidate for a company you SHOULDN'T invest in..talk about instability.

if you invest in such instable, short-term instruments (i.e, the rockets), well then consider yourself a gambler (and kinda stupid).

  8. well.. i don't think there's gonna be agreement on this, but here we go:

you gamble everytime you do ANYTHING.

you gamble when you cross the street.

you gamble when you turn the stove on.

you gamble when you flush the toilet...cuz it might get clogged!

you gamble when you interpret gurbani...who's the say your interpretation is the correct one?

you gamble when you go to sleep, for you may never get up.

you gamble when you plug in your appliances, for a short circuit could set your whole house on fire.

you gamble when you light a candle during a power outage for the same reason as above.

so.... stop gambling? or are we perhaps being too black and white as to what gambling is.

    because:

you gamble when you decide on a profession in life. there's no guarantee you're going to do well. it's all kirpa in the end. If i was in plumbing, for example, i could spend thousands on an education, hours on practising, and still make mistakes every time i do a job. I gambled away all that time and money, thinking it would result in my making an honest living.. and i lost.

I see the point...that you're just investing money that you don't have an immediate effect on. Consider the analogy.

there are capital resources, and human resources.. i.e, projects are capital intensive, or labour intensive.

    a)

you lend money to a friend. you are one of 15000 friends who lent 1 thousand dollars,of which all the proceeds will be put into operating the business.... and the friends that you lent to promise that you will get your whole principal back..and if they do very well...well, they'll thank you for beleving in them, and the generosity, and give you an extra lil cut.

    b)

you are a construction worker. You are one of 15000 workers on a large project. The project is wildly successful, and you get a raise at the end of the project.

the argument could be made that the friends' shop would be successful without your 1,000 dollar contribution. the argument could also be made that your work as a construction worker could easily be compensated for by the other 14999 workers.

therefore, from a very analytical point, they're both wrong.

1, because they're both earning money they had no direct business getting. Why should the construction worker get a raise? he should only be paid for the job he did. None of this extra business... therefore, he should refuse the raise? i doubt anyone would suggest this to be the case.

2, Remember that when we talk about doing seva, we talk about doing it with man, tan, and dhan.. part of the "tan" includes things like dasvand, or time and effort... Now i'm not suggesting that seva and earnings are the same thing, but just considering the general concept. If the definition of "tan" for seva purposes is both physical as well as money, why is this definition different for conducting an honest living? Why the double standard?

And just as you said "jus cuz you lot do it, doesn't make it right", i will say the following:

just cuz you DON'T do it, doesn't mean it's wrong.

  9. Well,

i don't believe i have that msn convo saved.... but jaspaul DID mention he thought pittsburgh would go to the finals... i suspect it's his unwarranted and blind (not to mention ridiculous) hate for the senators ( note jaspaul, you spelt the team name wrong.. i know that literacy, competence, general intelligence, motor skills, and logical thinking have been major issues for leafs fans in the sense that they've been lacking, or altogether nonexistent, but clearly you would know that the team name is "senators).

I'm prety sure he's just choosing the most likely candidates to play ottawa in the next round. let us analyze:

    a) he wants the lightning to win. should the lightning beat the devils, who plays ottawa in the second round??? the rangers

    b) Should the Senators beat the rangers, they will face the buffalo sabres (who will likely beat the tampa bay lightning if situation (A) occurs)

    c) therefore, if a AND b occur, who will ottawa play in the third round? The Buffalo Sabres.

This leads me to believe that Jaspaul's choices from the eastern conference are based solely on his hate for the Ottawa Senators... I thank him for it. It's a compliment. Surely, the reason he hates Ottawa must be because we're a good team.

If any proof is required to show that jaspaul himself does'nt know why he hates the senators, just that he does, please let me know. I have material related to this as well!

  10. ^^^

no hahaha.. we may not know! That's a personal issue... it doesn't matter what he needs the money for.. whether it be for bills, or to start a family, or who knows... it ain't our business.

in fact, to the originla poster:

none of this is our business.. none of us knows the relationship you have with your father, and hearing you describe it is only a one-sided story. I doubt anyone could give extremely valuable and relevant advicec in this case, since people likely don't know you, your family, or the relationship you have with them.

That being said, with respect to the "he raised you, whta's your problem" comments... first of all..if we really want to play that game, using statements like that, we could say the only reason his father gave him food and clothing was so that he wouldn't go to jail, because not feeding or clothing a child would constitute neglect... all of a sudden the picture isn't painted as prettily, right?

Secondly, since feeding/clothing/sheltering is necessary to live, it is a person's formal duty to ensure this is being taken care of if he/she has any dependents... whether it be a child or a senior.... in this case, giving 25 g's wasn't necessary to the father's life.. it wasn't like he'd die without it.

All that being siad... i agree with the person who said you need to give it more time.. it's hard to recover money in the first year of business operations... I think if you really really want any of your money back, talk to your dad about an installment plan... maybe 5 g's a year... i dunno... again, this really isn't our business, because no one knows you, your dad, or your relationship with him.

    all the best,

  11. well.. to be fair..

vaisaakh is the beginning of the month of harvest, and therefore a very joyous point of the year for farmers, because this is when they earn their money to feed their families for the rest of the year, basically..

vaisakhi existed long before sikhism, and it's known that there have been "vaisakhi melas" celebrating the arrival of this season.. before Guru Nanak blessed this world, farmers still celebrated the coming of Vaisaakh.....

in other words.. The Sikh persective of Vaisakhi is quite different from the cultural perspective of vaisakhi, because it just so happens that Guru Ji chose vaisakhi as the date to found the Khalsa.

Therefore, hindus, muslims, and so forth likely celebrate vaisakhi for that reason... To say vaisakhi is an exclusively Sikh Holiday probably isn't accurate, and since many many many punjabis operated their own khet back in the homeland, vaisakhi to non-sikhs still holds some significance..just not the same as it does for us..

I think it would probably be most responsible to somehow see if TWO posters could be made... one showing the Sikh aspect... and one depicting the cutural aspect... because Vaisakhi is AT LEAST as much cultural as it is reilgious...

i await to be shot down, cuz i don't think this will be a very popular viewpoint haha
