  1. ok so what is the real reason for having no garlic in langar?

is it allowed to be eaten at home?

i have heard reasons about the bad smell of garlic but i do not agree with this point at all. ginger smells, chillies smell, onions smell, masala smells, haldi smells. to single out garlic is just stupid and weak thinking.

i have also heard arguments about garlic as aphrodysiac, well if it is then so is ginger, chillie and corriander. anything with spices and warmth will naturally create a good feeling inside the body.

curry has a strong smell that is a fact and it does not matter if you use garlic or not. so why not just use it? if it is not allowed in the gurdwara then why is it allowed at all?

garlic is very good for health and it is very tasty.

  2. Hi which town, gurdwara and community centre. Names please

the town is irvine in ayrshire, scotland

the community center is called woodlands community center irvine

the hall is too small for an indian wedding party but im told it is used for events and functions where alcohol and meat are served when the hall is not being hired by the sikh association.

  3. Sounds similar to what was happening in Watford a few years ago. 2 groups fell out and one group decided to carry out a monthly diwan in a local community hall whilst the other ran the Guru Ghar.

At the end of the day, the Granthi Ji who does the sewa of Maharaj's Saroop should know better than to be taking Maharaj's pavitar saroop to the local community hall which will allow meat, sharab etc. There is a Hukumnama which forbides us Sikhs from doing this. What does the local Guru Ghar say on the issue? What about the other Guru Ghars in the surrounding areas?

The local community need to get together and resolve this. They should take the responsiblity of sorting this "fall out" out as they may understand the history behind the issue.

Are all the local Gurdwaras aware of the issue? I'm sure they can step in.

as i am not from the area i dont really know the full story. i will try to find out some details. i am told there is only one local gurdwara in the same town which is quite recently opened, im not sure of their views on the matter. this is in ayrshire in scotland, the other gurdwaras are in glasgow and edinburgh. does anyone know more about this situation?

  4. hi all I visited a "gurdwara" recently and i wanted your opinions on the strange happenings there.

i was visiting the area so i didnt know this beforehand. the "gurdwara" was a local community hall owned by the local council. this was hired (for the sunday only) out to the local sikh association who held a langar there. i was informed that this had been going on approx once a month for about 4 years now. there was no nishan sahib.

the strange thing i also found out is that this town has a permanent gurdwara less than a mile away. i asked why the langar wasnt held there and the i was told that they dont get on with the people at the other gurwara. im not sure where guru ji is kept when the hall isnt being used as a gurdwara and no one seemed to be shocked that the community hall would be used for parties the night before. surely this shouldnt be allowed or is that the way things are going now? anyone else know of this setup elsewhere?

    thanks for your views

  5. There was no disrespect on your initial post :) Singh# probably mis-understood your post.

I believe that you are talking about SikhiToTheMax software. You can download it from link provided by singhtah. In Gurdwara Sahib it is all done manually. There is always a volunteer who operate laptop attached to the projector :)

thanks for your help, its appreciated.

  6. Please show some respect while you post on SikhSangat.

That service is called "SikhiToTheMax" this software is pre-loaded with PowerPoint translations, and you have to manually select the Shabad/Gurbanee Paath, and a sevadaar (volunteer) changes the powerpoint slides.

    Its not voice recognition technology.

what do you mean please show some respect? in what way was my post disrespectful?

i was simply asking some questions

  7. hi all, i have heard of (but not actually seen with my own eyes) a system in some gurdwaras that displays in english whatever the person is saying or singing like shabad or hymns,

im sure some of you will have seen this system and my question is how does it work?

is it preloaded with the translation in english and just plays this a bit similar to karaoke?

or is it voice recognition technology with built in translator?

i dont know anything about the system but i find it hard to believe that their can be voice recognition technology so sophisticated and available to the general public at a reasonable price.

    thanks for all you help.

  8. hi what do you guys think of sikh people making a living from running shops that sell alcohol, meat and tobacco?

also restaurants serving the and pubs/clubs etc etc

and yet these people will go to the gurdwara on sunday without any problems.

im sure you are all aware that most sikhs running businesses are involved with one of the above trades so it is a huge issue in this day and age.

  9. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki fateh

    Khalsa ji..

I see too many Sikhs who are "outward sikhs". those who may have the appearance of the Khalsa, but no real love. Just empty gestures, gather at Sikh events as a social gathering and even when they do parchar its so fake. they have no concept of tackling any problems within the panth.

The reason we are suffering here and in our Holy Land of Panjab.. be it drugs, conversions, broken families, alcohol etc.... boils down to one thing

Our total disregard of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaaj.

This summer countless weddings took place where Maharaaj was taken into filthy environments

we have "freelance" gianis, who would happily take Mahraaaj in a the boot of a car for £20

When was the last time YOU did any sort of Research in your AREA???

I know of one Ravidass Gurdwara which is pretty much derelict where 2 Saroops of Maharaaj have been in Sukhasan for over 4 months. No one does their Sewa.

    (could have been any Gurdwara)

There are dozens of "registered Sikh charities" in every town and city. Small institutions where no one goes, they just blow government grants. Most these places can't afford a Giani yet they will have Saroops of Maharaaj.

How many Pakandi Deras have YOU checked out?? Half these people keep Mahraaaj for a laugh..

But we're content to just say stand by, wait for someone else to broadcast beadbi on the internet, then say tut tut and move on.

Too many fairy Sikhs parchaaraks filling our youth with wishy washy stories about how their lame life has got slightly better when they did "sangat" i.e. had cha and a samosa with a few sikhs.. now they have seen the light... wooooweeee

We need to get our act together.

We need to research our town and cities.

What you Need to do right now:

    • Check on internet for all Sikh institutions n your area- registered charities. Search words like "Sikh " "Sangat" "guru"
    • Next search all Nirankari, Namdhari, pakhandis etc. Much of these are listed here: http://www.sikhsanga...s-of-the-panth/
    • Now, Physically go and check them out.. How many Saroops do they have? who does their Sewa? how often?
    • Next phone as many Gurwaras as possible, say you need to book an akhand paat at your home which is an off-licence or a pub. Don't make it bate that you are testing them. Give them an address as a Pub or offy and see if they say yes or if they know a giani who would (freelance type)
    • Next ask as many people if they know someone who has Mahraaj at home. Then see if their family is upholding the correct Sewa.
I know one family who's granddad was a Giani, he died.. 2 saroops of mahraaj were left in a cupboard for 10 years in a house fulla p*ss-heads.

Please report back on this thread. Lets start a thread of some benefit.

We need volunteers from every town and city.

    Please input

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh

and what do you suggest we do if we find such practises going on?

  10. Comparing these two is like comparing apples and oranges.

For one Sikhs are not terrorist willing to blow themselves up and kill innocent people who had nothing to do with Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji being disrespected.

Muslims on the other hand have no problem killing the innocent and blowing themsleves up in the process. They don't care of innocent people die.

Sikhs on the other hand care about if an innocent dies or not. Sikhs will only attack those that committed the crime.

The governments know how Muslims work and Sikhs works(they know our disciplines), so they take it into consideration who is more of a threat to society as a whole. And it's pretty obvious the answer is Muslims. So inorder to please the Muslims and from getting bombed on from every direction, these governments like US and Canada are speaking out and saying it is a wrong action, to burn the Koran. These government are looking out for their best interest.

Say the Sikhs were like the Muslims then, these governments will see us as a threat to their nation and they will do anything in their power to please us.

The more noise you make in this world the more these politicians bow down do you and make sure they don't hurt you in anyway. US has learned their lesson of not messing with luantic fanatic Muslims. They don't want more US citizen blood on their hands.

does your post apply to all muslims? are you saying that all muslims have no problem in killing the innocent and blowing themselves up?

are you also saying that sikh people have never attacked or killed an innocent person?

it is language like this which spreads hatred amongst people. all i am saying is that you consider your use of language?

also i would like to ask: would you kill someone who burned your holy book? if not, what action would you take?

  11. This is the first time I have posted on here so dont know if this has come up before, but anyway came across this website and well judge for yourself. Some points just made me laugh.

    http://www.yourgodisimaginary.com/i28.htm

Honestly, you could have spent your time in a better way (like breathing....or blinking....or both) than to read this wesite

surely its good to read it to find out other peoples opinions and beliefs? we dont have to agree with them. for example im against racism but i like to read and hear what racists say, i find it interesting to "know your enemy" so to speak. are you afraid you might agree with what is being said? the best thing to do in any debate is to form your own argument to counteract the points made by the other side. you could make 50 points to rebutt their 50 points. i would really like to read both.

  12. we cant eat meat on tuesdays,

I HATE! when people say that, if you eat it you eat it no point not eating it on certain days, just stupid

i strongly agree! i hate the stupidity of not eating meat on a certain day! either eat it or dont eat it. it is painfull to see how many people will not use their brains. we have been so lucky to have amazing intelligence and yet some people follow these silly traditions.

  13. U cud go to many levels and trust me, its no point asking on this forum. You will spin off a debate about who is sikh - can you have moneh Sikhs? Can you have sehajdhaari Sikhs? Are you a Sikh if you dont follow x maryadha? Are you a Sikh if you follow a certain jathabandhi?

im looking for your opinion. it is based on your ideas and beliefs.

  14. koi nah rahnde rahnde, Geo di chittar floor te nei lagdi. bus. gal khatham.

oudi bimaari ya, sadi ta nei.

we will try to uphold our SIKHI REHIT. and we will allow geo to open his own gurwara where people will call him "the baba ji who took an avtar as a chair for the langar hall"

we already have our gurdwara, dont need your permission

do you agree with chairs for the elderly or disabled?
Yes, of course its okay for them.

But it should be made very clear that unless one has a physical ailment that is PREVENTING them from sitting on the floor, they should not sit on chairs. None of this "oh I have back problems so I avoid sitting on the floor" business. It must be stressed that there is a different between CAN'T and WON'T.

Guru Sahib's maryada must be upheld, particularly at places which we tout to be Guru's House!

how do you decide? should they bring a medical certificate or a birth certificate? very hard to administer this and i think could bring about inequality and bad feelings.

  15. just looking for your opinion and any facts that you can provide (please provide the source/research)

there are an estimated 23 million "sikhs" worldwide. i assume that this is based on how many people would identify themselves as sikhs if asked. obviously not all of them keep the 5 k's

given that there are strict and non strict definitions of what is a sikh - the question is this:

how many sikhs do you think there are worldwide and what is your definition of sikh?

  16. Geo, I regard that as an insult, many of Singhnis ARE hairy, and I don't think you have a right to judge them, because I find it very chardikalla that they keep their Kesh (facial etc) in THIS DARK AFE OF KALYUG.

Anybody can become a Sikh by chanting lords name after bathing in the wee hours of the morning. But a true Singh/Kaur of the Guru is only the one who keeps full rehit and is Tyar Bar Tyar - sabat surat dastara sira and for Singhs also siddha dhara. The one who keeps 5 Kakaars (Kesh is a part of the Kakkaars I think, may my liberal minded brothers correct me if I'm wrong), 4 Bujjar Kurehit etc + the qualities of a Sikh (Naam Daan Ishnaan) makes one complete Saint Soldier, Singh/Kaur of Guru Maharaj.

But on a side note, I don't think the girl should be denied entry, we allow EVERYONE regardless of caste creed faith etc in our Gurughars, then why not in our universities? Aren't we discriminating others ourself? Challo, lets assume shes not "Sikh", but even then I don't think its right for her not to be accepted only because she is not a "Sikh".

BTW, for those who haven't understood till now, there IS a difference between Sikh and Singh/Kaur.

    Bhul Chuk Maaf,

    WJKK WJKF

it was only and opinion and a joke as well. i didnt mean to offend you brother

  17. But other faiths are allowed to have as many gurus as they wish, it is not for us to tell them how to worship

if they choose to worship sggs like an idol or degrade sggs to the level of some fake illiterate baba..then i think you know what is done, right?

But that doesn't mean God still can't appear in human form.

does God appear in the form of donkey, or zebra or snakes? why only human form, whatever happened to equality! sigh ! God shouldn't differentiate between species, isn't that speciesim? and has God ,by chance, ever appeared as a Khusra?

if they decide that sggs is their holy book let the do what they wish with it, whats it got to do with you? just make sure that you respesct your holy book and let god decie what to do with anyone that god feels has amde a mistake. dont kill anyone in the name of religion!
