  1. The majority of the Sikh diaspora speak the doaba dialect of Punjabi, and in the doaba dialect the letter 'v' , although existing in written form, does not exist in speech and pronounciation. Thus, although it would be gramaticaly correct to say 'happy vasakhi', in spoken form it would never come out of the mouths of the majority of us because the sound of the 'v' would have to be forced out as it is so unatural. It would be happy Basakhi.

Either is ok ! as long as its not:

    1. happy sikh festival

    2. happy sikh new year

    3. happy sikh harvest

  2. No No No...No. No. Don't say that. This is simply a case of Singh holding back a bit too long. Kaur has virtue. She isn't gonna initiate pjysical contact and, in her mind, easily agreeing to physical contact is tantamount to initiating it. This is simply a case of Singh not being forthright enough. I'm sure even Kaur, right this minute, is wondering why he hasn't yet taken control.

I've studied Family Law. The one abiding memory I have of it is that when it comes to annulment due to non-consumation of marriage, the Law textbooks are jam packed with 'Kaur v Singh' cases. I remember when i was studying it, I couldn't help thinking that all my fellow students must think it is very common for sikhs to have this problem given our monopoly of English case law on the matter. Trust me.....Anullments due to non-consumation are so rare these days that their case, and all its sordid details, would make it into every family law textbook going.

respectfully, annulement is common in the Sikh community in the UK. One common theme arises in many of these type of cases, one party does not 'desire/ love/ want/ long/ give' to the other. In a community where many girls have (secret) relations before marriage, they use every excuse possible not to consummate.

In this example, singh and kaur appear to be reasonable adults. they both know what is needed/ required. My conclusion is kaur has more baggage than heathrow airport and should be dumped.

    Singh needs to move on.

Bloody pathetic waiting 9 months like a twit !

I bet kaur avoids singh like the plague, making him feel unnecessarily insecure.

PS: Im a teacher and had a sikh colleague go through the same experience (his missey was still in 'dialogue' with her ex). Singh nearly broke down !

  3. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

I congratulate all who were involved with the programme. A great job - Well done all (including the BCC). You got it right this time!!!

The icing on the cake was the fact that it ended with this track!

Boleh So Nihal !! Sat Sri Akaal !!!

It is an inappropriate music video. No Singh drives a mercedes SLK -its such a handbag motor !

  4. it was deliberately put on 11.20pm as to ensure the BBC had the maximum Sikh audience -this decision was based on the 2010 UK census of the Punjabi-Sikh group and their eating habits (in which 83% of this group eat at 10pm and sleep at mdnight).

Incidently, only the muslims eat later than the Sikh group. But they have a higher protien diet and less figuratevely round as comparred to their neighbouring Sikh group.

  5. west landan singh i agree with your sentiments....

Its one thing being camera shy. But after 9 months of marriage she doesnt want to do it then, I say her heart/ love is not for this singh (perhaps for another guy).

Something doesnt seem right in her head. Appears this singh is doing all the right (sensitive) things.

Annul (as the marriage has not been consummated) the marriage and move on !

Where is your self respect Singh -get the F out !

  6. I also saw the interview. It was interesting (and perhaps refreshing) to get another Sikh locale (ie. Delhi region) perspective.

Its not politics. Its not even addressing issues. A lot of the content was countering the negative jibes Sarna had received -it was good to hear their perspective. They are a very powerful/ influencial outfit (SGPC/ Badal are not exclusive to the Sikh cause.

In any case, we should let the Badals and Sarna's be ! Our biggest issue is how do we make Punjab better -economically, reduce alcoholism and drugs, educate the Sikh youth and have proper health facilities for all.

Our overseas Sikh leaders have been giving the same rhetoric for the last couple of decades and nothing has changed -how about investing in Punjab (cant do that its too corrupt), how about opening a clinic (err, cant do that, coz busy busy organising a pu55y punjabi wedding for a family member in southall), err how about you fill in the gurdwara accounts (err, yeah, but accountants gone to canada for a wedding).

RANT OVER. Time to wack the punch bag !

  7. This is actually a very good question. I'm surprised the thread has seen little participation and activity. All things considered, I will say the Conservative Party is more sympathetic to the Sikh cause than the Labour Party.

Its a difficult question to answer. Depends on the individual MP. The general rule is that if the local MP is a Labour man or woman who is one of these things : Musilim or very left wing or black...he or she will be willing to listen to Sikh concerns and will be willing to speak up for the Sikhs. However, as evidenced by what the Labour Party has done in the last 5 years in the 2 neighbouring west london constituencies of Hounslow and Southall, which, added together, provide the largest numerical number of Sikhs in the entire country. In both these constituencies, after the death of the sitting MP, the Labour Party have shown their total, 100% unwillingless to select a Sikh MP to stand in what are largely Sikh constituencies. In both constituencies, even though the longest serving councillors and largest number of official candidates were Sikhs, the Labour Party decided to by-pass traditional routes of selection and impose a Hindu Punjabi candidate on the elecorate. It goes without saying that the Sikh electorate in London thus get more aympathy for Sikh issues from their BNP councillor than they do from their 2 Hindu MP's. Our only saving grace in London is down to continous pure luck when it comes to the Mayor, i.e Ken being a left wing renegade whose conscience cannot be whipped by the whips at Westminster and Boris Johnson through the fact that Sikhism runs in the family via his wife's side.

The Conservative Party, on the other hand, and its MP's, are very aware and very supportive of the statistics in this country that show the Sikhs as the nation's most patriotic people, the Sikh stats of home ownership and hard work, and the Sikh links to the British Army. In fact...our proud British Army link is not only our biggest weapon when garnishing support. However, there are among our community, large sections of the youth that are very vocal about rubbishing those links and rubbishing the special bond with the British. These Sikhs (who I would say are now the majority among the youngsters) are basically killing and destroying the one thing that gets us support among the masses.

One of our greatest weapons, when looking for support, is of course Sir Winston Churchill's passionate speech about the respect the nation owes to the Sikhs. The man is a hero of all Conservatives and invoking his name and message is always handy when looking for support from an MP.

So, in conclusion then, I would say at the moment it is the Conservatives who are more our friend. However, if young Sikhs carry on with this suicide policy of rubbishing the proud links with the Army and the union jack, we will soon be left with no friend and supporter at all.

    Agree with west landan singh.

Labour traditionally had the Sikh vote. Did very little other than attend Gurdwarae for votes, whilst our elders skipped around them with their broken english. Tories have not made an obvious attempt to get the general Sikh vote. However, they have listened to the Sikh voice and nowadays more receptive to Sikh issues.

Blair/ Brown where publically pro-muslim -Sikhs hardly got any airtime with them !

  8. Wjkk , wjkf,

My jackass of cousin came to say with me for 3 nights and he is very interested in shastaar during the Xmas holidays. I have an old old kirpan. the handle s now very lose.
