  1. I was wondering if you guys knew a place to buy patkas online. All mine have ripped and only have 2 in my rotation for school! haha

I tried contacting GoSikh because my measurements for my patka are 21x24 (I'll have to recheck but I believe this is correct)

And most places make patkas that are square shaped.

If anyone knows where I can buy some online could you post below. It's hard living in a city without a significant Sikh population.

    Thanks!

  2. Maybe you're in luck??

I've had a bit of experience teaching a nonPanjabi speaking relative Panjabi/Gurmukhi , although the focus has been on the alphabet rather than speaking (so far). I've also got a best friend who is an esol teacher whose shown me good strategies for teaching languages.

I presume that you must have some basic vocabulary (i.e. you probably know at least a few Panjabi words), which gives you an advantage. You also have everyday access to fluent Panjabi speakers which is a BIG PLUS. You're probably struggling most with syntax - or the order of words in a sentence at this stage? So focus on that

    Here goes:

First things first - Fall in love with the idea of you speaking/reading/writing Panjabi. You must REALLY want it, from deep within yourself. At the very start acknowledge that there will be times that you will have ups and downs - and that you will persevere regardless of these.

    So lets jump right in!!

We are going to start by having you learn about 15/20 words. Learn them 5 a week if needed, but LEARN THEM PROPERLY, so they are committed to your mind. To teach you the basic syntax (i.e. order of words in a sentence), let's focus on kitchen related stuff. So here are your word lists:

    Objects:

    Chah - tea

    Pani - water

    Dudh - milk

    Kursee - chair

    Pateela - pot

    Doing actions/verbs:

    Rakh - place/put

    Paa - pour/place

    Khaa - eat

    Pee - drink

    Baet - sit

    Sit - throw

    Positions:

    Vich - in

    Naal - with/alongside of

Uppur or Utey - on top of/over

    Haitaan/Thullay - beneath/below/under

    Pichay - behind

Once you know these, words we can start putting them together in sentences. Learning them shouldn't take you long. Get help from your family if needed.

Hi thanks actually I knew all of these words :D lol

Sounds silly but try communicating with your parents more, you'll be amazed at how much you pick up. Eventually you'll even start thinking in punjabi instead of english lol you'll be like how do you say x word in english :) might sound silly now but watch it happen. Also make it a "rule" at home that no matter what only punjabi is spoken, yes you'll struggle first but later it'll become natural. English isn't our first language in most cases but look how we picked it up as youngsters same way if punjabi is spoken around us regardless of understanding the language you'll pick it up over time. Best of luck little bro

I try to with my parents but my confidence level drops when I dont know a word for the sentence. My dad would instantly say "TENU PUNJABI ONDHI NE?!" Makes me feel like <banned word filter activated> to be honest, because my sisters have picked punjabi up from when they were kids and had NO ONE to speak english with. I can't even ask him words english to punjabi because he doesnt speak much english to begin with. Punjabi is the only language I speak with him but even then I don't see him much and when I do I am busy with schoolwork etc. (He works late hours along with my mom who comes home around 7)

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

  3. Throughtout my life I haven't been good speaking punjabi.

Being born a punjabi my parents thought that I'd learn naturally with them like my sisters did, but the problem was that my sisters didnt speak english with anyone so they didnt need it when they were young.

Its hard for my parents to teach me directly too cause of the language barrier. I speak Full english and a little punjabi, they speak full punjabi and a little english so its hard to ask them what something means and how I say it.

Now I'm 15 and want to step it up and learn and become one with my culture because I kinda feel far from it.

What are some ways I can learn punjabi online or at home (books, etc.)

I'm moving back to Brampton next year and plan to find a teacher to help me progress but for now i'm in a punjabi-less city lol

    Tips?

  4. God bless you, are an inspiration for teenagers everywhere. Google bhagti, it helped me alot when I was younger and still does. Remain thankful for all you have, there are people out there starving etc.

Remember that this is all just a game, He gave you pain in the past so that you turn to Him- his plan is always in play, nothing is a coincidence- everything that negative that happens to you is to make you turn to Him.

God is everywhere and is everything, he loves you regardless of everything and anything, when you do naam simran, you are bringing Him/ His truth alive around you.

Naam is actually him, you become a realised part of Him while in naam, you become a part of Everything because He is everything, we are all connected, You are Me and I Am You. We actually have no image or form because our true selves are already a part of Him and he has no form or image. So never feel alone we are all Him and He is us,

All you see around you is false- it's all just him but our eyes delude us into believing everything is seperate from him. Its like a big computer game we've been put into and the creator of the game is Him and the characters and places are all actually God himself.

    Thank you

Feels good to hear that. :)

by the way I thought in Sikhism there isnt a hell that Earth is hell and heaven

  5. I am only 14 and do have thoughts of suicide at times but never ever on a large scale.

Be around more people personally I am in a house alone for 5 hrs a day

keep your busy with good things

    and obviously pray

  6. There really shouldnt be anything wrong with this its disappointing that your parents are angry

This shows how sikhism has evolved from past generations that still believe in the caste system

You arent doing anything wrong right now shes sikh and your sikh but your parents are wrong they are looking at the color of her skin and where she is from.

There is a couple at my local gurdawara that is wife white and husband indian they both are now happily sikh with 2 sons :D

Like above said choice is yours.

I would have a big conversation and convince them that their wrong and show them what the Gurus said about caste system/segregation of race.

    Hope all goes well :D

  8. For PE class in school

    (im in grade 9)

I wear a Patka to school everyday and were doing a swimming week for something where we have to swim

How can I swim with my patka anything I can wear over it or something I cant take it off because Its hard for me by myself to put it back on.

    Advice?

  9. I have some questions on the concept of khalistan - note im only 14 just want some answers

(sorry if this was in the wrong section)

1.) Why the name Khalistan I know it means The land of the pure but isnt "stan" that the end?

I just find it strange and hear others saying stuff about countries witht the stan ending.

2.) Is anything recently being done to accomplish this?

i only hear stuff from the 70s-80s

3). Would we be able to survive as a country (my cousin (15) believes we wont because we will be weak)

Personally i love the concept and would love to help to accomplish this

I understand that a religion needs a homeland and country for it to survive and spread.

Just love to hear everyones opinion of this

    Thanks.

  10. I wear a patka to school everyday (note im 14)

and i always notice the back of my head it goes in (this is where the patka ends at the back) there is like in indent its like a curve /////_///// The undercase <------ is where my patka ends at the back of my head

It doesnt hurt but kinda worried me

My patka isnt even tied on tight it doesnt hurt while im at school

Ive also noticed my cousin where the front of his head where the patka starts at the forehead its a bump that goes in

it looks really weird for him (NOTICE he ties his patka real tight)

    Is this bad?
