I believe that gender discrimination within the Punjabi community is all around us. Take a look at the Gurudwara committee members in Toronto- practially all of them are men! If women want to join, she is looked down upon and gets ridiculed, since it is not a 'woman's job'. In addition, the hosts in Indian television shows are almost always a male with women acting as their 'little asscoiates' and having little to say in intellectual discussion. There is still the ignorant mentality that a woman's actions represents her family's honour more than the male's, and that a woman's 'real' home is at her in-law's house
Bhangra music videos are a whole different matter, but I believe that the stereotypical way that women are portrayed in them socializes people in thinking negatively about women, in general. Almost all the time, bhangra music contain offensive lyrics abotu women and demean them. Music videos protray the outlook that women "like" to get followed and stalked by men! I am aware that not all people are brainwashed into thinking this way, but television is after all, a socializing agent.
