GuruFateh!

Veer Ji, I would recommend that you take up Gatka. It will instill discipline into you more than any of the other martial arts. Also, Gatka is a religous art and without the spiritual side of Gatka, it will mean nothing.

A friend of mine went (a few months ago) to a martial arts exhibition show where they had the various martial arts i.e. karate, tae-kwon-do, kick-boxing, kendo etc. However, everyone at that exhibition was amazed by the performance put on by the Gatka students as they used swords, lattiah etc with great effect. Even the Sensei's of the other arts were amazed, therefore, the greatness of the art Of gatka was revealed!

ne tips on strenghthnin ma hands

    122864

    GuruFateh!

I also play the tabla. A good way to strengthen the hands is to (might sound a bit stupid but it works) position your knees as you would position the tabla and practice on your knees. As your knees are harder than the tabla skins, your hands will become accustomed to playing. Also the more you practice, the stronger your hands and fingers will become.

Playing the tabla effectively comes with time. Don't expect to be able to play perfectly in a short space of time. I've been playing the dholki for about 8-10 years and the tabla for about 6 and I still have a few things to master!

The tabla is so perfect in accompaniment to singing Shabad's.

    Hope this helps you!

I have just come across a film called 'Guru Gobind Singh' and has the following actors: Kulbushan KharbandaSonu Walia Girja Shanker. I was wondering whether or not this is an informative film the way 'Khalsa' by Manghal Singh Dhillon was.

Appreciate the views of the Sangat on this one.

  4. I was EXTREMELY unhappy as a Catholic and my family have been Catholic for generations.......not practicing..but they were Catholic because their parents were, and their parents were and so on....

As you have just stated above, your family weren't practicing Catholics therefore you can not comment on this discussion because you never looked into the Catholic faith (as you just said) but you were unhappy. You just went by the fact that your parents and their parents were Catholics so that meant you were automatically a Catholic. WRONG!

EXCUSE ME i said my family were not practicing catholics...did i say i wasnt?  I was baptised AND confirmed as a Catholic and read the bible.  I studied Catholiscism in depth....i also studied Islam for 4 years before being graced with Sikhism (waheguru)...that comment hurt!  nonono.gif

    121999

If I have offended you I am truly sorry.

However, as Guru Nanak said 'There are many paths but all are for the same goal.' As I have stated previously, that is what I am arguing about. If you are born into the Catholic faith (or any other faith for that matter) if you delve into that faith fully, you will find enlightenment as all paths will take you to the same goal. That's the point I was trying to make. Typing a post on here is different to actually talking face to face with someone so if I have offended Shanti and anyone else, accept my apologies.

As stated in the Guru Nanak's quote, that is why I feel it is wrong to change/convert your faith. And as I stated in my original post, it is upto us as Sikhs to educate our youth and others who's faith is not strong and do not know about their religion. So to whoever stated that loads of people are all talk and no action, I am one of those who talks and takes action! I have already changed the opinions of many people in my own family who were following a distorted form of Sikhi and I strive to educate anyone who is willing to learn!

  5. Before anyone else replies........

In the Panjabi community, how many people do we see that claim to be Sikh's? The answer is a very large number. Many of this same number follow the 5 kakkar. But are they really Sikh? The answer is NO! Because they do not lead there lives according to Sikhi and the Rehat so they are not Sikhs. If we are Sikh's of the Guru, then we should lead our lives according to the Rehat otherwise how can we say we are the Guru's Sikhs? These supposed Sikh's take intoxicants, discriminate about caste etc so they are not Sikh's.

Hence my argument, that if you are born into a certain faith, follow that faith with all your heart and only if you do not find enlightenment can the subject of conversion arise.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

  6. If converting to another faith is wrong, what about when you see Christains or Muslims, etc convert to Sikhi?  Do you also consider them as wrongful?

    121912

Maybe I didn't explain it clearly in my initial post. You get some people that convert to other religions under the pretext that it will help them get closer to God but these people are the same ones who can't be bothered to learn about their own religion first. I have seen this first-hand in my family. There are people who have converted to the Christian faith but knew nothing or hardly nothing about their previous faith. These are the people I am commenting about.

In reply to Pheena, I do consider it wrong if Christians/Muslims convert to Sikhi ONLY if they have not learned their own religion first. If they do not find enlightenment in their religion but find it in another, fair enough but not if you can't be bothered to learn.

Anyway, the point of this topic was about muslims who go out with the intent to befriend Sikh and Hindu girls and slowly brainwash them into accepting Islam as their religion. That is FORCEFUL conversion. That was the point of this topic and what we as Sikhs can and should do about it but it looks like people are more bothered about petty arguemnets rather than tackling the issue at hand!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

  7. GuruFateh!

I visited www.whyichosesikhism.com yesterday and was shocked at some of the literature spewed out by muslims regarding faith conversion. These people make leaflets and hand them out to their youth with quotes from the Koran regarding the impure infidels and that only followers of Islam are pure.

These leaflets outline conversion tactics that the muslims youths can employ to succesfully convert people.

I feel that the onus is on us to educate our youth about our religion and history. A lot of our people do not do this. Gurudwaras should hold more classes where the youth of today can go and learn in-depth about our religion. I feel that once you know sufficient amounts of Sikhi, no-one would even consider conversion as their own faith would be too strong.

On a final word, converting to another faith is wrong in the eyes of God. Let me explain:

I was born into a Sikh family. This was through the will of God. If he intended me to be born into a Muslim/Christian/Jewish etc. family, I would have been but I wasn't. God intended me to follow the Sikh faith and that is what I shall do. If I follow another faith, I am going against the will of God.

  8. GuruFateh!

I have heard from certain elders that a Mother can not see her son's Laava take place in the Anand Karaj. I have also been at weddings where this practice has occured. I would like to know people's view on this. Personally, I find it wrong. The Laava are a very religous ceremony so why can't the mother see something that special?

However, if I am wrong, please forgive me and state quotes from the Guru Granth Sahib.

  9. Gurfateh!

A while back, a user on Sikh Sangat, posted the address of a website where you could play and download kirtan. I was wondering if anyone could put up the link to the website?

    Thanks!

  10. K_51NGH,

There are many things that the Gurus did not include in the Granth-Sahib. The five Kakars for example. But the Sikhs continue to maintain unshorn hair and beard, dont they ? If they were actually that necessary the Guru would surely have included them in the Granth-Sahib.

Gureu Nanak refused to wear the janneyu no doubt. His argument was that what is inside is more important than external appertunances. If janneyu is meaningless for Nanak how could a mere growing of hair have any meaning?

Firstly, wearing a janneyu is a man-made thing. Having unshorn hair is how Waheguru intended us to be.

"If my hair was meant to be cut, God would not have made it grow."

Guru Nanak Dev Ji also said "Respect Hinduism, Respect Islam but they are not for us." I think that makes it VERY clear that we are not Hindu's.

"I do not accept Ganesh as important. I do not meditate upon Krishna neither on Vishnu. I do not hear them and do not recognise them. My love is with the lotus feet of God. He is my protector, the Supreme Lord. I am dust of his lotus feet"

    Guru Gobind Singh

"I have read all the Vedas, but my mind's seperation from God is not removed and the five demons of my house (body) are stilled not even for an instant."

Guru Arjan Dev, Ashtpadis pg. 687

Granted, that going back in our history, we originated from Hindu's as a racial group but the point of the matter is that Guru Nanak made a seperate religion by the hukum of Waheguru hence what we are today.

If you want to go further back in time, Banda Singh, the human race originated in Africa (according to scientists) so are we all African?

The point is that it doesn't matter who we were hundreds of years ago, it's who we are now by Waheguru's grace.

Also, regarding your comments about Khalistani's, I am a pro-Khalistani as,

"Without sovereigneity, religion can not be."

That is more than enough in my eyes to have Khalistan as the Hindu government of India does not, never has and never will think of the Sikhs in equal terms.

Waheguru Di Mafi, if any of the quotes are slightly incorrect.

  11. It doesn't seem nice discussing this but it's something which i have been questioning for months. no.gif

Are giannis and patties all they make out to be?

I always had alot of respect for them. They are there to help us through to the path of god. A guide as some would say.

A couple of months ago i was at the bus stop. An old man wearing a turban was sitting there. It was a very cold morning as it was snowing.

He kept lookin at me an me well i was more worried about when me bus was going to come. He had the ajit newspaper in his lap but i took no notice of him.

I looked over to see if the bus was coming an there i saw "IT".

He had his thing in his hand. He knew i had seen it but he did nothing to cover it up. I was disgusted. An old sikh man was doing this infront of me. I must have been the same age of his grandaughter if he had one.

What made it even worse was that when the bus did finally come he didn't even get on it. He got up an walked away.

You might be thinking what has this got to do with giannis an patties.

A few weeks later i was on a bus an i saw him get on. I could see he recognised me cus he did not seem comfortable sitting not that far from me. He was dressed in traditional white. Like a patti or gianni.

I was on me wayto the gurdwara an what shocked me was that he was at the exact same gurdwara reading the guru granth sahib ji.

I no this may not go for all giannis an patties as most are as respectable as they look and do respect sikhi an girls as their daughters, but that incident did make me question.

    Can anyone help? no.gif

    111974

I was told this by my uncle who owns an off-licence. A giani from the local Gurudwara came in and asked for a small bottle of whisky. My uncle questioned him on this and the gianni replied that "he is a besharam banda" and then said that he can't live without alcohol. I argued with my uncle about this matter and said that he should have refused to sell him the whisky.

However, if the Gianni said that he can't live without alcohol, why take amrit and become an amritdhari? Why become a Gianni and read the Guru Granth and preach to others on how they should lead their lives in accordance with Sikhi? These so-called gianni's should cut their beards and hair and take off their kirpans etc. as they are not fit to wear them and in so wearing them are blackening the name of Sikhi!

I always say that Amrit is an extremely holy thing and when one takes amrit, he/she should know deep down inside if they can lead their life in accordance with Sikhi. ONLY then should they go through with Amrit Sanchar.

    "MANN JEETA JAG JEET!"

"Win over yourself and you've won the world!" - Never a truer word said.

  12. its used b/c milk is "better" than water in washing things and as kumi paji has said...its purer.

    110553

Yeah I understand that but the point I am making is that most people use milk etc as they think its some sort of holy thing like Hindu's do. That's what I'm saying. Use milk etc if it cleans items better but don't use it under some religous pretext.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

  13. Lolll noo , its beacuse milk is the purest thing

    110550

As written in the bani's of Bhagat Ravidass,

"What can I offer you that is pure?"

"Water? But the fish has already polluted it"

"Flowers? The bee has already tasted it"

"Milk? But the calf has already tasted it"

"The only thing I can offer you Lord, is your True Name."

  15. very interesting points! you people sound very brave and courageous! lol However, its a well known fact that modern sikhs live off the reputation of sikhs of the past i.e. Bhinderanwala. You people talk the talk...but you cant walk the walk! You're all very brave siiting at your PC's, oh well it keeps me entertained! LOL LOL LOL Can someone please tell me when the next wedding is so i can come and watch and have a laff!

    110029

I will tell you now that I talk the talk AND I walk the walk. I am proud of Sikhi and of the men and women that have fought to preserve it. If I see injustice happening, I will go and attempt to sort it out regardless of who the person is. This is in accordance with what our Guru's taught us.

Wherever someone is in the right, I will fight for the truth! A few situations have arised where I have stood up for the truth!

Question is have you Sant Mat? And about your post saying that "modern sikhs live of the reputation of Sikhs of the past." Let me tell you, I am one of those 'supposed MODERN sikhs' but my thinking, attitude and outlook on life is a lot like the Sikhs of the past. Just because YOU can't do anything, doesn't mean there aren't Sikhs out there who can and WILL!

Bole So Nihaal!!!! Sat Sri Akal!!!!!!!

  16. dont waste your precious time, how can scriptures be contaminated by alcohol and meat! its more beadbi stopping someones wedding! I advise not to disclose the venue or date of the wedding...these people will ruine someones day and you will also be a part of the sin! life is about peace love and unity! not fanaticism

    109693

It's people like this who have got embroiled in "man's" law. These sort of people say that someone's weeding will be ruined.

In this day and age, everyone is bothered about pleasing their parents, brothers, sisters and family but has anyone bothered about thinking of how they please the ultimate Creator, Waheguru?

I say what's wrong is wrong end of story. It's wrong to take the Guru Granth into places where there is alcohol as this goes against the teachings of Sikhi.

Many Singhs and Singhni's have given their lives to protect their Dharam but narrow minded people forget this. Just listen to the Ardass carefully next time and you will hear about the Sikhs who have died for their faith.

"If by following one's religion fully makes one a fanatic, then a fanatic I am."

The above quote is an adapatation of one by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

  17. Remember when Guru Nanak Dev Ji went to Mecca and had his feet positioned towards the mosque, and the lesson we learnt was that God is everywhere. Then how comes when we go to the Gurdwara, it is a must that we sit cross-legged? I know this is out of respect but Waheguru exists everywhere right? So aren't we somewhat contradicting here? :)   A question I've thought of quite frequently.  grin.gif

    109527

It is a contradiction. Mehtab Singh asks "Are we the equivalent of Guruji?" The Guru's are called Guru's as they taught us a way of life. The way we should lead our life in accordance with Waheguru. Don't forget the ultimate being is not any of the Guru's but Waheguru. The Guru's were his messengers.

Many people come to the Gurudwara and be on their best behaviour etc. But once they leave, they will be back to normal and do wrong things. Do they think that Waheguru is only present in the Gurudwara? Have respect for Waheguru everywhere, not just in the Gurudwara, hence me saying that pointing your feet at the Guru Granth is not wrong.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

  18. I don't understand why Amritdharees drink alcohol. If you can't give up alcohol or wanna continue drinking, why take Amrit?

"One who trades in this Amrit/Nectar of Naam, how could he ever love the wine of the world?" - Guru Granth Sahib, Ang 360

"Guru Ji says by drinking this wine, one commits countless sins." - Guru Granth Sahib, Ang 553

  19. I've never come across this in the Granth or have not heard anyone back up their claim with a quote from the Guru Granth. So in light of this, I don't see a problem because menstruation is a natural process, which was the creation of Waheguru. It is with this process that a child is born so I do not understand why its classed as wrong.

However, if I am wrong, I am sorry. Could someone back up their claim with a quote?
