TAKING AND BREAKING AMRIT Think about two words people put together Breaking Amrit. Some talk about "Taking Amrit" and "Breaking Amrit". Ask yourself, how can you take something that isn't yours? And how can you break something that is Eternal? What does the word Amrit mean in Siri Guru Granth sahib Ji? THE FIRST AND HIGHEST AMRIT Here's what I understand. Bhai Gurdas Ji says that God is inside us like fire is hidden inside the wood. When someone is blessed enough with the highest state and realise God inside them, then God manifests in two spiritual forms - LIGHT and AMRIT. That great and blessed soul experiences light brighter than all the suns and their body being internally drenched in the sweetest amrit. They experience the kundalini rising, the opening of the third-eye and the tenth gate, hearing the unstruck melody and tasting the One Eternal Drop of Amrit inside them. That is called “Ek Boond Amrit”. When a great soul merges into the Eternal Supreme Being they become eternal as well : a-mrit meaning “Without death”. Only God is deathless, becoming one with God you drink the real internal amrit and become deathless. You are given this Amrit by God’s Grace, Gur Prasad. You cannot take it, only God can give it to the ones who have pleased Him. AYK BOOND GUR AMRIT DEENO TAA ATAL AMAR NA MU-AA. The Guru has blessed me with the one drop of Ambrosial Nectar, And so I have become stable, unmoving and immortal - I shall not die. SGGS THE SECOND AMRIT ========================= The second type of amrit is “Naam amrit”, this is what gets the soul to the stat e of “Ek Boond Amrit”. If you think of “Ek Boond Amrit” as the fire being revealed inside the wood, then “Naam Amrit” is the lit match that sets the wood on fire. “Naam Amrit” is the greatest happiness in this world and brings great joy and bliss and energy into the mind of the devotee who meditates upon it. SUKHMANI SUKH AMRIT PRABH NAAM BHAGAT JANAA KAY MUNN BISRAAM The greatest happiness in the world is the amrit naam of the Lord. The mind os the devotees are in wonderment. SGGS Only God in the form of the Eternal Guru, the Satguru, the one who has the light and amrit totally manifested inside them can GIVE this this gift to a mortal soul. Satguru Nanak Maharaj was and still is the Giver of Amrit, “Amrit ka Data”. Bhai Nand Lal Ji writes that when Guru Nanak Dev Ji disappeared into the river for three days, God gave Guru Nanak Dev Ji two things, humility (gareebee) and naam amrit. And Guru Nanak Maharaj went into the world to give out the greatest happiness to every single person he could. SATGUR VICH AMRIT NAAM HAI AMRIT KAHAI KAHAA-AY. The Amrit Naam, the Ambrosial Nectar Of the Name of the Lord, is within the SatGuru. SGGS AMRIT NAAM SATGUR DEE-AA. The Eternal Guru bestows the Amrit Naam, the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. SGGS 352 On receiving the Naam Amrit from the SatGuru, a mortal soul becomes totally devoted to it. It saturates his tongue, breaths, mind, heart, kundalini, third-eye tenth gate and each and every pore of their body, mind and soul. AYK NAAM KO THEE-O POOJAAREE MO KA-O ACHRAJ GUREH DIKHAA-I-O. I have become a worshipper of the One Name; the Guru has shown me this amazing wonder. SGGS 209 THE THIRD AMRIT =============== So how does a mortal soul receive the “Naam Amrit” from the Satguru, the Giver Of Amrit? That is the third type of Amrit. Whereas the other two were spiritual, the this one is physical. At Guru Nanak Ji’s time upto the ninth Guru, the devotees where initiated with Charan Amrit. The ceremony consisted of the Satguru ji dipping his toe into a bowl of water and the Satguru ji’s amrit drenched body would purify the water. It was called Charan Amrit – Foot Amrit. The devotee would drink this and be given the Naam – the holy word, the Name of God to meditate upon. You could say well anyone can chant the Name of God. Yes they could, but receiving it from Satguru ji is like getting a lit match. And repeating it just because someone else told you about it or you read about it, is like trying to set the wood on fire with an unlit match. Satguru Gobind Singh Ji transformed the Charan Amrit Ceremony into the Khanda-batta-da-amrit ceremony. Where the Five blessed souls, the Punj Piara who where fully enlightened and expereincing the highest type of Amrit “Ek Boond Amrit” stirred the water with the holy double-edged sword and chanted then Amrit Naam and Words of God. They were God as the Satguru and became Amrit Ka Data. The point of the the khanda-bhatta-da-amrit ceremony is to give the mortal soul “Amrit Naam” which they worship whole-heartedly and with Gur Prasad, or God’s grace reach the highest state of “Ek Boond Amrit.” Never to be born or to die again. The rest of the initiation ceremony is to give you discipline so that the 5 thieves do not steal your amrit naam. Eg if you become engrossed in lust and spend all your time after porno movies and magazines then you are no longer worshipping the Amrit Naam. If you keep your discipline wear you 5Ks have good sangat you will survive. You can’t break Amrit. It is indestructible. All you can do is break your discipline, and break your promise to worship ONLY the Amrit Naam. I hope that has helped you understand this important word, AMRIT.

Ropar: Death is the great leveller, they say. But when I visited a few villages around Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district of Punjab and met parents of young men who 'disappeared' during the days of terrorism, I wondered if the adage was true all the time. THE LONG WAIT: People who lost their near ones during days of terrorism Poor farmers narrated how their sons were picked up by the police, never to return. The authorities were not interested in finding out what happened to them. The hapless parents waited for long and then knocked all doors of justice but to no avail. Most of them sobbed unabashedly as they described their agony to me. Some questions troubled me: how come only the sons of the poor were picked up and killed? And how come only they are facing difficulties in getting a proper death certificate? A 70-year-old man whose son had 'disappeared' spoke as if he had read my thoughts. He said that the rich too had their share of disappearances. They were victims of police extortion, too. With a lot of wealth to pass on to the next generation, their need of the death certificate was greater than that of the poor. Yet they don't go to the court or talk to the press. They usually used their influence (and affluence) to deal with the matter quietly. If at all there is anything common among them, it is the composition of the families: elderly grandparents who take care of grandchildren and wives of the 'disappeared' who have moved on in life.

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! This Life is For You Lord Supremely respected holy ones, gathered together in the purifying presence of Guru Granth Sahib Jee, the Guru is embodied in you the holy congregation, the Sadh-Sangat. In order to make your time and your breaths successful, all of you beloved men and women have travelled here from near and far, leaving behind your worldy affairs just to be in the presence of the eternal and permanent, pure and immaculate Guru Granth Sahib Jee. Now lets take some time to search our Guru's teachings. Only that life is successful that comes to Guru jee - others are not even worth a penny. Our human body is just one house out of 8.4 million different life forms. Now to receive this human body we can't begin to imagine how many virtues we must have done. The aim of life is to meditate on God's Name, or Naam, and to praise Waheguru jee. Guru Arjun Dev jee says, "Bhaee prapat manukh dehuria, gobind milan kee eh teree bariaa having received this human body, it is your turn to unite with God, The Protector of the World " Today we have a body, a mind and time to praise Waheguru. But, a time will come when we have none of these. Guru Arjun Dev jee continues, "Avar Kaaj teray kita na Kaam, mil Sadh Sangat Bhaj Keval N aam Other works are of no use to you, meet the Holy Congregation and meditate only on Naam" Guru Tegh Bahadur jee, the ninth Guru-Maharaja, says open your eyes, you didn't bring your body from your last life and it won't go with you into the next life. You are proud of your sons, your wife and your house, but these things won't go with you. "Avar Kaaj teray kita na Kaam, mil Sadh Sangat Bhaj Keval Naam Other works are of no use to you, meet the Holy Congregation and meditate only on Naam" Guru Amar Das jee says, "Eh man pyariaa, too sada sach samalay - O my beloved mind always contemplate The Truth" But nowadays, a brother doesn't trust a brother, a father doesn't trust a son and to my great sadness a Sikh doesn't even have faith in Guru Granth Sahib jee. We have more faith in a wedding invitation. It says the wedding's is on so-and-so date at so-and-so place. We don't go the day before nor the day after, we believe what we read on a tiny piece of card with full faith. But, we don't have the same faith for all the words of Guru Granth Sahib jee. We have more faith in a wedding invitation than in our Guru jee. omeone asked me what the difference is between the great Sikhs in our history and the Sikhs of today. There's only a little difference: the historic Sikhs did what Guru jee told them to do. Today's Sikhs expect Guru jee to do what they say! Guru Amar Das jee says "Eh man pyariaa, too sada sach samalay - O my beloved mind always contemplate The Truth" But what is the Truth Khalsa jee? Bhagat Ravidas jee says, "Naam tayro aartee majan muraaray. Har kay naam bin jhoothay sagal paasaaray - Your Name, O lord is my adoration and ablution. Without the name of God, all ostentation is false." God is true, Guru is true, Naam is true and everything else is false. How do gather Truth? Guru Nanak jee says "Amrit vela sach nao vadaee vichar - Get up at early ambrosialtime, or amrit vela, and sing the praises of Vaheguru " But how many Sikhs get up then? Great Sants, or Saints, said change your own life and seeing you hundreds of thousands will change. People ask, ``What will happen to the Khalsa Panth, the Khalsa Nation?'' Why are you worried about the Khalsa Panth? Worry about yourself and the Khalsa Panth will be taken care of by God. The Khalsa Panth has the five pillars of beloved five Punj Pyare, it has the blood of the four sons of Guru Gobind singh jee as the the cement! People ask, ``When will the Khalsa rule?'' The simple answer is when we become Khalsa. But, look inside yourselves, while we are doing other things we can't be Khalsa. "Avar Kaaj teray kita na Kaam, mil Sadh Sangat Bhaj Keval Naam Other works are of no use to you, meet the Holy Congregation and meditate only on Naam" While we love other things, our soul can't break out and be with Waheguru. Love between friends and family is great indeed, but the greatest love is love for Guru jee. Like the love Bhai Mani Singh jee had in order to give his body to be chopped joint by joint, like the love Bhai Taroo Singh jee had in order to give his scalp rather than allow one hair on his head to be cut. People ask, ``If I meditate on God's Name, Naam Simran, then who's going to do my work?'' But, who's going to do your work when you are dead? Who was doing your work before you were born? These works of your were carrying on before you came, they carry on now and they'll carry on after you've gone. Guru Amar Das jee says, "Saath teray chalay nahee - Your companions do not go with you into the next world." They don't go with you. What does go with you? "Avar Kaaj teray kita na Kaam, mil Sadh Sangat Bhaj Keval Naam Other works are of no use to you, meet the Holy Congregation and meditate only on Naam" > Time spent in the sadh-sangat, holy congregation, meditating on God's Name goes with you. When a flea bites a cow's udder it only drinks the blood. Milk is there too, but it is not in its destiny to drink the milk. In same way to find the the holy congregation, the Sadh-Sangat is to be greatly fortunate. The fortunate ones follow Guru Nanak jee and gain the true profits. A millionaire called Sayt, went to see Guru Nanak jee. Guru jee asked him, ``How much money have you got?'' He said, ``40 million Rupees.'' Another Sikh said, ``O protector of the poor, Gareeb Nivaaj, Guru jee he has got nothing.'' Guru jee asked him why he had lied. He said, ``I'm telling you the truth Guru jee.'' Guru jee then asked him how many sons he had. Sayt answered, ``Guru jee, I have one son.'' The other Sikh said, ``Guru jee he's lying again, he has got 5 sons.'' Guru jee said , ``Sayt why are you lying?'' Sayt said, ``Why would I lie to you Guru jee?'' Sayt was 60 years old he had a white beard. Guru jee asked him how old he was, he took out his dairy and started flicking back the pages he answered, ``Guru jee, by your grace I'm 12 years old.'' Guru jee said, ``What are you saying Sayt? You are obviously over 60.'' Sayt put both hands together and said, ``Guru jee I told you the truth. You asked me how much money I had, well I've had 40 million Rupees in my life which I've given away an d I'm left with only 1 million.'' Guru jee said, ``Forgive me Sayt for doubting you, your answer was true. Sayt is true.' Sayt said, ``Next you asked me how many sons I had, I said one, its true I have five sons but four are drunks only one is beloved of Guru jee, he is sensible and loves his parents. Then Baba jee, I said I was 12 years old because that's how many hours of service, meditation and holy congregation (seva, Simran and Sadh-Sangat) I've done. Every time I do one of these I note the duration. That's what I regard as my age, that amount of time will be taken into account not my body's age.'' Guru jee said, ``Sayt is true.'' "Bhaee prapat manukh dehuria, gobind milan kee eh teree bariaa - Having received this human body, It is your turn to unite with God, The Protector of the World." In the town of Kanshee, all the banks were being robbed. One of the robbers asked Bhagat Kabeer jee to join the thieves. He told them that wealth doesn't go with us into the next world, and if they really wanted to steal, then they should loot the wealth of God's Name from Waheguru! If you want to steal anything steal God's Name. Time is short you will regret wasting your life in the end. Some people ask, ``Who's seen the next life?'' The Guru's have seen it. I say receive amrit, get engrossed in worrship and devotion, but people say ``I've still got a lot of life left to drink and eat meat.'' Our time is short some people die in the womb some die in youth, there are no guarantees. If you didn't meditate on God's Name in your childhood then that was wasted. If you didn't meditate on God's Name in your youth then that was wasted. If you didn't meditate on God's Name in old age then that was wasted. If you didn't meditate on God's Name in life then the whole of your life was wasted. Raja ShivNabh's kingdom was visited by Guru Nanak Dev jee, the Raja was an atheist. Guru Nanak jee went to those places where the greatest sinners and evil people were. ShivNabh's ministers warned him not to meet Guru Nanak jee unless he wanted to be cursed. Four ministers were sent to meet Guru Nanak Dev jee and to stop him reaching the Kingdom. They offered a silver plate laden with diamonds at Guru jee's feet. They said, ``This offering shows our King's respect for you.'' Guru Nanak jee said, ``Tell him how can he respect me with mere pennies?'' The ministers were taken aback, all other saints had accepted this offering and left the King alone. ShivNabh was told this is no ordinary saint. Guru jee said to the ministers, ``Tell ShivNabh that if he wants to make an offering then he'll have to come and offer himself.'' ShivNabh was an egotistical man and didn't recognise how great Guru Nanak jee was. When a person thinks wrongly he'll not see other women as his sister, mother or daughter but as sex objects. Guru Nanak jee saw everyone for what they were. King ShivNabh was an egoist and thought that Guru jee was probably one too. Next he sent his dancing prostitutes to try and tempt Guru jee but they failed as Guru jee addressed them as daughters. The minister told ShivNabh. ShivNabh was shaken, the fear of God entered him and he thought ``Who is this uncorruptable man?'' Without firstly having the fear of God, love can't enter. Without love one can't worship Waheguru. "Gobind Bhau bhagat ka bhuka - God is hungry for the love of the Saints." Guru Gobind Singh jee says, ``Sach kaho sun leho sabhay jin prem keeo tin hee prabh paaio.. "I speak truth, all should listen, those who live in love are the ones who attain to God". ShivNabh had the fear of God enter into his mind. He bowed to Guru jee then put together his two hands and made a request. To ask for something you have to become humble. ``Gareeb Nivaz, O Protector of the Poor, I'm the king of this land. Your father couldn't take it when he died, your grandfather couldn't take it either and neither can you take it because it doesn't belong to you.'' Guru jee repeated his original question and asked, ``O ShivNabh, donate something of yours, the kingdom is not yours, the queen that rules it with you is not yours, no donate something that's yours!'' ShivNabh said, ``I will donate MY body to you Guru jee.'' Guru said `O foolish ShivNabh, this body isn't yours. Where are your father's and grandfather's bodies now? They had to leave them in this world, the body wasn't theirs and its not yours either. No donate something that's YOURS!'' ShivNabh said desparately, ``What can I give? Take my name.'' Guru Nanak jee said, ``ShivNabh, if you want to give me your name then show me the god Shiva's Navel, that's Shiv-Nabh means. You aren't Shiva, you can't give me his navel, can you?'' ShivNabh was nervous and confused, he said, ``I don't own this body, I haven't got riches, I don't own my Kingdom, the Queen doesn't belong to me, O Guru Jee what can I, I, I give?'' Guru jee said, ``But you're in possession of such a great thing that if you give it you'll be saved from birth and death.'' ShivNabh said, ``I can't see what I, I, I can give?'' Guru jee said, ``Give this I, I, I that you keep stuttering like a goat ! You are not a kingdom, you are not a body and you are not your name.'' ShivNabh fell at Guru jee's feet a changed man, he said, ``Everything is Yours, nothing is mine, nothing is mine Guru jee.'' ShivNabh, the egotistical King, had a complete change in his state of mind. Now ShivNabh, the humble servant said, ``I'm nothing.'' Guru Nanak jee said, ``Now go back to your duties and rule the Kingdom.'' ShivNabh replied, ``I can't rule, before I, I, I was doing it, but now I'm nothing I can't do it.'' Guru jee said, ``If someone asks you who's Kingdom you are ruling, just say its Guru Nanaks. If someone asks you who do you belong to, just reply to Guru Nanak.'' IK OANKAR SATGURPRASAD I read an article the other day and it answered these questions really beautifully. Basically God is goodness, God is love and God created us so that we may love God. Gurbani says that "Gobind bhau bhagta ka bhukaa" God is hungry for the love of the devotees. The article is by Duncan Greenless "The Gospel of The Guru Granth" How did this universe come into existence? There was nothing but God. He willed and out of the word which expressed that Will the universe is being ceaselessy made. What is God? The One Eternal and Infinite Unmanifest, who has manifested Himself to us through His works. He is the King, Father of All, abiding in all and also the Ocean of Pure Being wherein all abide. Where is God? He is in all that He has made, as their inmost self. Is there a special temple for Him? The whole universe, the heart of each living being, the place where the WORD is loved and sung - these are God's temples. Why does God create the univers? So that He, being good and by nature the giver of all, may give out of Himself through its countless forms and that they may all share His life of infinite blissfulness. Does he desire to gain anything through this work? Being perfect, He can gain nothing for Himself, but he desires recipients of His love. Is matter eternal? No. Through the action of God's creative power it comes into being and at His will it ceases to exist. But its duration is of inconceivably vast extent. Are hell and heaven eternal? No. Nothing is eternal except God and the soul which merges into Him. All states and planes exist only until He brings the "play" to an end. Has this universe any real existence? Being created by the One Supreme Reality, it is a real expression of His eternal truth (sat); but as it arises no real independent existence of its own. Compared with the Creator it is like "the shadow of a cloud", " a flying dream of the night". Is the universe good or bad? In itself it is good, because it is the visible expression of the will of one absolute God : it may become relatively bad for the soul which chooses it in preference to Him. What is sin, or evil? The deliberate turning from the service of God to the service of the petty "self", and the seeking of worldly pleasures for their own sake. Tht is, it is the wilful disobedience of what is known to be God's will. What is man? The creature or child of God, mortal while he identifies himself with the perishable world and body, but with the power of becoming truly immortal through union with Him; until then, doomed to wander in the outer darkness of the world unable to see and really love Him. Why did God create man? So that a living creature might choose to love Him above all things and so at last unite with Him and share His glorious , eternal work. What is the origin of the individual soul? Like that of a spark from the One fire, a wave arising in the One Sea. The soul comes from God, is always really in Him as a partial expression of His will and at the last manifests it perfectly in union with His perfect self. What is man's duty on earth: to God , to other men, to himself? To love and worship God, holding His prescence always in mind and doing all actions in His name and His glory; to serve and help mankind in all humility, gentleness and courage, fulfilling the duties of his state in perfect hon esty, to aspire continually to become a perfect devotee of God and to do His work on earth faithfully so that he may gain those qualities which enable His grace to unite him with God. How can man become free? In contact with saintly persons, a continuous dwelling on the thought of God and faithful discharge of duty, egotism perishes and man realises that that his real self is the one ever free formless God. Can he do this unaided? No. In order to break his bonds God's grace is absolutely necessary. How does God help him? When he is reaqdy to be helped, God sends him the intimacy of a Guru whose contact, teachings and example awaken true spiritual visions in his heart and so set him free from bondage to the ego. Why does God not give this help to all? His will is that all should long for such aid and prepare themselves for it; the moment any soul is thus made ready, His grace at once descends and the Guru gives enlightenment. What should a sinner do to escape the evil lot? Repent of his sins and wash them away by ceaselessly dwelling upon the thought of God; he can do this when (by serving his Guru with faithful devotion) he has won his grace. How can man find God? With the Guru's grace, he does all his action and meets all the events of his life in the mood of conscious adoration of God; then his heart is so purifies that God Himself comes to dwell in it and taken him to Himself in loving embrace. Can the true knowledge of God be given by another? Not fully; the Guru's touch of grace opens the soul's eyes to God's light which is always there, and enable him to see the Lord. In reality it is God who gives the knowledge of Himself, but to that end He takes the form of the Guru. What is the result of righteous conduct? In this life virtues attract grace and they swiftly bring the soul to surrender and to union with One Supr eme God : in the other, God draws the righteous soul near to Him so that it never falls again into the shadows of earthly life. What is the final goal of life? The total loving union of the soul with God, in His active work of creation and uplift, and in the blissful contemplation of His perfection. Can you sum up this Religion in a few words? It is life of active effort towards world uplift under the Guru's guidance, so that all souls may attain the final goal. It insists on human equality, and rejects caste, race prejudice, the use of images for spiritual God and all external show of piety - insisting on absolute sincerity and preserving action for the love of God.
