  1. Why so many pre-suppositions on this thread.....we need to stop making things up. Why not ask Basics of Sikhi for a detailed stand of opinions and ask more specific questions if they bother you? Instead of making up what he/they might think or probably thinks? I'm no fan of 3HO, but I wouldnt say that everything they did was wrong either. Some of the Simran Kirtan that comes from those affiliated are beautiful and has influenced other jathas and kirtan styles. A lot of Jathas have their own distinct problems and ultimately we should see only one Panth...How many of us actually see one Panth? Personally I don't like what goes on there with regards to money and yoga but these are personal views. There are some amazing Gursikhs too. If you come from a non punjabi background you are assumed to be 3HO or at least found Sikhi through them. This is not the case. What I'm trying to say I guess is don't go on hear say or what you hear down the langar hall. Go and find out for yourselves or just ask. Basics of Sikhi group are chardikala Singhs and will always go out of their way to help. They gave a beautiful talk about Shaheedi of Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Telford over the weekend and really are inspiring, they have very knowladgeable Singhs doing their kathas.

The question was asked directly to basicsofsikhi question and answer site. Its better to read the original post than make assumptions.

  2. I don't think he is supportive of some of 3ho practices. He doesn't say it directly, but I remember hearing him indirectly mentioning it in one of his videos or maybe it was a comment he wrote, I forget which. He probably will not answer the question you have posted because if he condemns them, he will look very narrow minded and that will be detrimental for the overall parchar work he is doing of Sikhi to reach out to the wider audience. IMHO Some topics are left better untouched until we are in a stronger position.

I kind of see where you are coming from. I really can't say why he would not answer my question. In all honesty, if it was any other jatha being questioned would he put up the question? They have a sevadar answering the questions along with Jagraj Singh:

Who answers the questions here? Is it just jagraj veerji or there is some one else also? I want to know who to thank for answering our questions in such a nice way and helping us to get closer to waheguru. :)
Its a sevadaar ji, and Jagraj Singh answers a few. Thank Vaheguru not us...
Right now, we should just focus all our efforts on Parchar while encouraging other Sikhs who practice manmat to start following authentic Sikhi. All religious and political wrongs will be undone once our people become more religiously observant because a religious Sikh nation is a strong Sikh nation, the less religious we are the weaker we become. During the Singh Sabha movement, the Sikh parcharaks made it a point to not condemn any religion or even start anything political. But once Sikhs were stronger demographically and overall more religiously observant, then Sikhs felt they were in a stronger position to act more bold and then we see Sikhs openly opposing the British in Ghadhar movement, Gurdwara reform movement, Babbar Akali movement while also challenging the pujaris and mahants who were in control of our Gurdwaras. Right now our position is not good. We are a nationless nation, with no international support, most of our youth have become Patit both in India and abroad. To fix this, we need to make Parchar our top priority.

I think this is the wrong approach. The Sikh community needs clarity on 3HO today not when they are brainwashed further by non Sikh teachings.

Another thing is, 3ho are small and have little no effect on Punjabi Sikh society because their movement is mostly geared towards Goras. We have bigger problems than them like the Kala Afghana Chelas, missionaries who are trying to turn Sikhs into atheists and on the opposite side of the spectrum we have to also deal with Sanatan Sikhs who are hell bent on trying to Hinduize Sikhi. And these two manmat groups are confusing the hell out of Sikhs instead of showing the clarity of the simple message of the Gurus.

In no way are 3HO small. Go to their classes and attend their events to see. They have a lot of naive punjabis hooked and they are cashing them out. I don't see why these groups cannot be addressed at once.

  3. Sorry his name is Gursant Singh who used to be part of Yogi Bhajan's cult and left and started to expose Yogi Bhajan's dirty tactics. He has a youtube channel where he discusses about 3HO and modern day problems with Sikhs in America. He is a fundamentalist Sikh but wrote a whole book about his journey becoming a Sikhi and Yogi Bhajan's cult. Here is his facebook page of his book https://www.facebook.com/ConfessionsOfAnAmericanSikh

I have seen his material on 3HO and he is doing a good job on exposing them.

  4. We need to teach a different style to make sure they have full love and passion following Sikhi way of life. The way we teach our youth today kind of puts pressure on them and fear at the same time as I have observed in my own sangat. Also having gyanis and ragis who have not much education and don't even know english can't reach out to the youth. They are just going in for the money and even are scared to do kathas as in the case in my own gurdwara. We have to be real on the issue of keeping hair. We have to teach the real signifance of keeping our hair and teach differently and N30Singh's example of sant isher singh's gurmat camps is a perfect example on ways to strengthen one's faith and spirituality. The thing is many of our elder Sikhs (not all) aren't taking considerations from the youth seriously.

Now I am hearing more conversion in UK happening of Sikh girls/boys converting to Islam. It's been going on forever but whats leading them to convert is the question. Sikh parents need to be educated.

One of the biggest fear youth have today about joining Sikhi is what will happen to my friendships I have and how will society accept me as a Sikh. What will happen to my business partners will they look at me the same way? What about my friends they might try to avoid me after taking up uncut hair and dastar? They fear the disconnection from what they perceive currently as their heart and soul of their social life. Many worldly pleasures they enjoy now will have to be set on the back burner and this means losing social life associates that were created at bars, pubs, and clubs. Will others look at me weird. None of them will admit this to you directly, but I have spoken to enough of them and this is the biggest hurdle for them. They can't let go of these things. The uncut hair, worldly talks, partying, etc is the thing that keeps them going in life and part of a bigger society. They are the like the heroin addict, but hooked on their social life status provided by their behavior and physical projection.

These insecurities they have can only be fixed by truly contemplating over Gurbani and directed by Gurmukhs. The recipe is simple. You got to give them something more powerful that gives them security and a social life, where they can go air out their concerns and questions in an open manner without feeling judged. Some will be better off starting together with others and some will be better off starting by themselves, depending on their personalities.

  5. BasicsofSikhi is supportive of Yogi Bhajan and his cult he has started in America using Kundalini Yoga which is against Sikhi teachings. Gurjant Singh as already written about the truth of the 3ho cult. They surely need to switch positions on their stance with Yogi Bhajan.

Who is Gurjant Singh and can you provide his writings here or a link to them.

I can't see how this can be looking at basicsofsikhi views. Here is another one that goes against 3HO beliefs:

Khande bate da Amrit for gays??
If someone has homosexual beliefs then they cannot be a practicing homosexual after taking Amrit - remain celibate, price they pay for Amrit
  7. I couldn't find which post exactly. Can you pinpoint it? Heard a lot about 3HO and mostly its about their questionable teachings. Heard a very interesting story about from 1 friend who visited one of their summer solistice. I'll share it once I'm convinced. It's a unique picture but i have not seen it personally so I won't just go on about it.

Here it is below. However it does not make sense because basicsofsikhi does not believe in allowing gay anand karaj to take place and 3HO members openly attended one and support gay anand karajs. Basicsofsikhi sevadars needs to take a deeper look at 3HO and it's sisters organizations before support them, which misleads sangat.

what are your views about the 3HO cult ?

Nothing wrong with them, in a garden you have flowers of different colours for variety - same way there are different types of Sikhs.

    Anand Karaj for gays??

    No
  8. There was a question ask to basicsofSikhi creators yesterday on the folowing site. http://ask.fm/basicsofsikhi

The question arose because of the unclear response basicsofsikhi gave, when asked what they think of 3HO cult? The question further elaborates on what he considers to be 3HO practices and how aware he is of Yogi Bhajan's creation, 3HO.

This is not a smear campaign against basicsofsikhi, but to get a clarification on their stand. Once they answer the question, it will be posted here.

  9. People have made Akal Purakh into their servant. Does a servant need to be told what to do for the master? No he as a strict routine to follow and the master sits comfortably knowing everything will come to him. No need to beg or ask the servant what he wants. Our Guru's taught us to be servants and not masters. Without Vaheguru hukam no one can even blink an eye. Have we gone this egotistical to think everything will just come to us? Get down on your knees and beg and beg in front of him with a pure heart. Ask those who Akal Purakh has made their body the cage they can't escape. Can't get out of bed on their own, need to be fed by another, and cannot control when they go to the bathroom. Ask those who have no sight how many ardas they do to darshan of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. Go and listen to those who can't hear, how they long day and night to listen to the sweet sound of Gurbani kirtan. Our Guru did ardas before Akal Purakh. Read Bachittar Natak or the Bani also comes in Samporaan Rehras Sahib of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji saying in his ardas, I (Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji) can only uphold truth if you (Akal Purakh) are by my side.

Don't lose your Sikhi to those who cannot even beg before the Creator, the provider, your everything.

  10. I remember once hearing someone on Sikh channel say that "I never do Ardas for anything because maharaj knows best for me and he will do what is right and the thing you should ask for is Gursikhi! " He also gave an example of a mother and child, he said imagine if there's 2 children and one child is always bugging the mum saying "I need this/ give me this/ I want this!" the mum eventually gets fed up but the child that says patient and remains silent she'll praise him and happily give everything to him.

I tried this with my parents and it really worked and ever since then I've always accepted what maharaj has done and never really did a specific Ardas for anything minor. I just follow the idea that maharaj ji doesn't need me to tell him what I need as he is the creator and he knows better than me.

and If im every worried I always tell myself that I should keep 'parosa' (trust) and if things ever went wrong I tell myself that maharaj jis testing me to see how strong my parosa is..

Also there's that shabad that's goes

    "Bin boleya sabh kich jaanda

    Kis agey keeje Ardas"

But now with Uni and exam stress I feel really confused because I don't want to break this notion of parosa that I have.

Is it right to do an Ardas to maharaj for small petty things?

The comparison of Vaheguru in no attribute being(no fear no hatred) to a mother with worldly attributes of being annoyed upset does not make sense. If he had taken a mother who exemplified Vaheguru no attributes of without fear and hatred then he could compare but his story would make no sense. Ardas is done to ask and say without you nothing can be accomplished, so please help me here my father (Vaheguru).

If the sikh channel person is right. This makes Gurbani of Bhagat Dhanna ji false. Bhagat ji ask even after meeting Vaheguru I need a good wife and food to put on the table.

Don't listen to these false parcharaks. Listen to Gurbani that tells us to do ardas. What is Chaupia Sahib da paath? Is it not an ardas?

  11. To BarinderSingh - luckily I have tried to avoid 3ho as I have heard some negative things about some of their practices. My yoga in the morning is a 20 minute clip from YouTube, and I only use it as a method of waking myself up early in the morning, so I can meditate properly. I also shower lukewarm/cold to help facilitate this.

As for my actual meditation technique - I have tried to keep it very simple for this 40 day trial, so that I can experience meditation without trying to keep too many rituals or long mantras in my head. I have only sat down, closed my eyes, and repeated either the mantra 'waheguru', 'sat naam' or 'ik onkar'. I have tried to keep everything basic and practical, as so far this is my understanding of sikhi.

These practices (waking early, cold shower, basic yoga, meditation) have all been beneficial, but my big problem is not appreciating the melodies of sikhi. Perhaps I need to focus on my seva and learning punjabi, reminding myself this is good for me, and this will come. I will also try guruvah's suggestion of making a plea before the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

There is just so much emphasis places on the music, with the SGGS even being divided by musical arrangements (as far as I currently understand), so it feels discouraging not to 'click' with this aspect of faith which is considered so crucial. I won't lose hope, though!

Thank you again for everyone who has commented so far. You've all been very encouraging and it is very much appreciated.

I'm glad to here you are not following 3HO. You said something about listening to Japji Sahib in your first post? Are you listening in english or Gurmukhi (Punjabi)? I strongly encourage you to read in english, if this is the language you understand Gurbani in. Yes, the translation is not fully correct, but you will grow spiritually from reading the english translation.

Yoga (stretching) is fine to stretch the body out and get the blood flowing through the body, but there is a time and place for it. To wake your body and mind up in the morning, Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji says to focus your mind on the word of Guru Sahib. Again reading Gurbani wakes the mind up and allows you to focus on meditation of Gurbani.

I don't want to put you on the spot. Do you know what the meaning of Vaheguru, Ik Onkar, and Satnaam is? I ask you, to show you when we dive deep into Gurbani the meaning of these Gurmantra become clearer. Uttering these Gurmantra without understanding leaves the person hung up on wanting more. Nothing wrong with wanting more because you want to be taught the reason behind them. So for this you need to read Gurbani. I again strongly suggest you read Gurbani in whatever language you understand the best and if you have any doubts come and ask them here. You will benefit a lot from contemplating over Gurbani in whatever language you understand it the best. Also Vaheguru, Ik Onkar, and Satnaam are not mantras. Mantras don't exist in Sikhi. What does exist in Gurbani is Gurmantra which are not the same as mantra. This mantra teaching is also strongly influenced on others by 3HO. Mantra are the sounds of the universe that will leave when the universe leaves. Gurmantra are the true teachings that hold the key to realizing Akal Purakh. The Gurmantras are not subject to time and space. The word Raam was taught by others to be a mantra. The Guru's took the word Raam and gave it the true meaning. Before it use to mean the remembrance of a God(king) name Raamchandra. The Guru's took this meaning and showed how it is false practices to worship a king (Raamchandra) who died. They said Raam means God is everywhere so repeat Raam, Raam in this way.

  12. Anyone that is the son or daughter of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji must read the above shabad posted and spread this message to all the Sikhs who are doing all these different kinds of yoga. It is your duty as the son or daughter of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji to spread this message far an wide to all Sikhs. Summer is just rolling around the corner and the yoga misguided instructors will be tricking Sikhs and others into paying them big amounts of money to attend their false camps. If you want your brothers and sister to be saved from these false camps, then spread the above Shabad like wild fire and don't stop till these yoga false teachers are driven out to the woods where they belong. Guru Nanak Dev ji went to teach the yogis the truth. The yogis did not teach Guru Nanak Dev ji the truth. Gur Shabad is the stick that will beat these yogis into shape.

Wake up Sikhs. It's not time to sleep. Your Sikhi is being robbed right before your eyes. Time to arm yourself with the Gur Shabad and defeat these fraudulent people one more time as Guru Nanak Dev ji did.

Guru sahib calls them fools who do this left to right nostril breathing yoga for trying to keep the body from falling apart and from becoming jivan mukt. Bhagat Jaidev ji is not agreeing with it in his bani but telling the right way of leaving this left and right nostril and joining to naam simran. Sikhnet purposely present Gurbani wrong to favor their kundalini yoga cult.

  14. I am a westerner who has recently become interested in sikhi. I am trying to wake early to do a bit of yoga, meditation, and I've tried listening to Japji Sahib while reading along. However, and I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I don't really enjoy the sounds of banis. I don't mean to offend anyone, it is just a sound unfamiliar to me, but as hard as I try, I don't properly appreciate the holiness in the sounds and language. I come from a religion with a strong mystical tradition that is in line with Sikhi at its core, and I wonder if that practice might better be suited for me. I enjoy the sounds of the prayers much more in that religion. I realize this is largely cultural bias, but I feel like after trying to immerse myself in recitation of the banis in punjabi, and still not appreciating it, that it may be better not to force it forever.

I believe the SGGS contains truth. There are no beliefs to discard, unlike if I went back to my previous religion. However, I feel it might be improper to sit in gurdwara and listen to kirtan, or to do the morning banis, without actually enjoying it. I recognize these are fundamental aspects of being an observant Sikh, so I don't want to perform them with an empty heart.

I am still on my path of 40 days straight waking early for meditation and listening/reading along of Japji Sahib. I feel completing this is necessary for me to make a proper judgement call, but I am becoming disheartened. Does anyone have any opinions on what I should do? I would love to become Khalsa someday, God willing, but if I can not recite the banis with love in my heart, I could never become Khalsa. Help!

You went to the a cult called 3HO for learning Sikhi. They do not teach Sikhi. They teach kundalini yoga.

Come into Sikhi and you would not want to leave. First mistake, you must read Gurbani in the language you understand. So start reading in english and slowly start learning punjabi. With understanding you dive deeper into the ocean of Gurbani.

Give me a break down of what you are doing. All the unnecessary things you are doing can be taken out. What kind of meditation are you doing in the morning? What does it involve, certain body positions, hand movements, etc.

  15. Its jevoh witness knocking on sikhsangat door. Can we come in.....we are only here to take you away from the true Guru and fill our pockets with your money....can we pretty please come in....im on the clock...

Notice how there is no case number provided for court case. No story why exactly he was arrested. No detail of his remarks that got him in so called jail. This guy needs a desi rehabilitation program. Whoever catches up to this poster should provide with one and ask which faceless master of yours told you to come and post these lies here.

  16. I can think of 20 guys and 7 girls who cut their hair because they were not fitting in the party, club, pub seen. These are 27 people who received proper Sikhi teachings. Nothing to do with they were not taught about Sikhi.

This bogus excuse of they were only given turban and hair uncut as Sikhi is only true for a very small group of people.

Majority wanted to fit in with rest of society. They did not feel right drinking, partying, womenizing, and sleep around with Guru Sahib's saroop. Just shows they were taught Sikhi.

Now look at the mona parents and children. Ask them why they dont keep hair? They say it is not a must as a Sikh to keep hair. So who is the really problem blocking Sikh youth from following Sikhi? it is those people who tell lies that hair uncut is not a must. It is those who pick and choose what they want to follow in sikhi and then force this on others.

All these false teachings have done a lot of damage to Sikhi. These fake gyanis are the problem.

  17. The people who play God and Guru Sahib are the ones who make up stories and then call a Baba the roop of Guru Nanak Dev ji. These sad people tell others if you dont believe in my baba you are going to hell and tell others where so and so went. None of these ignorant people have gone to see where the masands went or not. They make up these stories to elevate their baba, the same baba that says sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji took drugs. They are the descendants of Sri Chand who elevated a stone worship of Guru Nanak Dev ji to take Sikhs away from the worship of the true Guru, Sri Guru Angdev ji. They don't even let shaheed Singh family have peace. They make up lies to kill shaheed singh's families.

Only those who rise above "Tre-guni maya" are role models.

Aam aadmi are driven by maya unlike Holy people.

So set your standards high, accept the tv show host as just another Sansari.

How sad are you to use Gurbani as a tool to distort the fact others will still see him as a Sikh role model.

I know him and his crew more than you might think. They are all about showing off and using this as a tool to attract youth to their lifestyle. They believe they are the example of a perfect Sikh. I know where I am coming from when I speak of him.

  19. Other marital art students and teachers actually get into fights to show what their marital art they have learned is capable of doing. Where is this man's video? His brainwashed naive students say he can't fight because its lethal technique. This is the biggest load of horse manure I have heard from anyone about fighting. The deadliest fighting styles out in the world have fighters going at it at least 80% speed. Some go full house and they do not injure themselves.

Here is another person trying to make a business out of using Sikhi's name.

  20. Personally I think we need to be careful of accepting stories such as the killings of the Masands without there being ample historical evidence for this story. The Guru had gold on his arrows so that if the person who was hit by the arrow was injured he would be able to afford to treat the wound and if he died then his relatives would be able to afford his funeral. It does not seem to be in keeping with the Gurus than one of them would boil alive Masands no matter what their crime. All sorts of stories contrary to Gurbani have crept into Sikhi such as the Devi worship and havan story mainly though writers who had an agenda.

Comparing warfare to the incident of the Masands is not practical. Warfare involves armies that are paid to fight and are blinded from the truth to the point where many lies are told about why we need to fight and kill the other side (devils, kafirs, etc). Guru Sahib put that gold at the tip of the arrow is the same compassion Bhai Khanhaiya ji saw in helping the wounded "enemy" soldiers. Reading Zafarnama it is clear Guru Sahib completed the task of burning the masands. The words used towards Aurangzeb show the Bir Ras coming from the writing of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji. Aurangzeb passed away after reading Zafarnama. The masands like Aurangzeb broke an oath they took in front of the Guru. The 40 mukhta also broke an oath, but they were forgiven because they came back to defend their Guru in the battlefield. The 40 mukhta regained their oaths honor. However the Masands were on a rampage of destruction. In this rampage there was no moral acts in site. Did Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji warn the masand to stop their immoral behavior is not clear in history, but looking at the Guru Sahib's Bani, this is very likely. Guru Sahib gives the chance of receiving forgiveness many times, but sometimes, when the actions are too harsh and horrible Guru Sahib takes on the form of NarSingh and sinks his claws in to take the dusht apart piece by piece. Chandu Shah was also brutally taken apart by the Gursikhs at the orders of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. The sangat is like the innocent Bhagat Prahlaad. They try to follow the Guru's instructions to the best of their ability. They come to the Guru after a hard day's of work to get darshan and give whatever they have made back to the Guru. They travel for long hours or even days to get Guru Sahib Darshan. They put their trust in the custodians of the Gurdwaras to be honest with them and give them the direction of their Guru. These Bhagats (Guru ki sangat) were being wronged by the Masands as poster Jonny101 describes on this thread. Guru Sahib is in love with his Bhagats and stand up for his bhagats when they need him.

  21. He is just a tv host not a Saadhu-Sant.

    It was Sanjog.

    "Live & let others live"

Those holy people who wrote Gurbani got married in their teens.

Nowdays guys/girls aren't getting married or laid even in 30's.

So where is the tradition and what does religion say about it ?

He is not just a tv host. He becomes a role model for the younger adults and teens in Sikhi. For this his wrong choices will be criticized. How else will the teens and younger adults know his choice was wrong? If he was some joe blow on the street, I really would not care.

"live &let others live" this choice went out the window when he became an amritdhari, which goes for everyone else and further "restricts" his actions when he took on the role has a host for a Sikh tv show. He can believe whatever is okay to do, but his beliefs do not hold true in Sikhi as they did not when he married a girl who was not amritdhari and can't even keep the basic of hair uncut. Let's not make special seats for a few in Sikhi and then drop the ax on rest of the Sikhs who are not so fortunate to hold such positions.
