  1. I am ashamed that Dalits ("untouchable" Hindhus) are converting to Christianity and Bhuddism (which is understandbale in non_sikh states) and yet they do not feel they cna belong to Sikhism, in e.g. Punjab and Haryana. This is an indictment against modern day Sikhs in applying our 1st Guru's teachings. The Caste system is racial prejudice and snobbery at best, and at worse repression. That's all I am qualified to say.
  2. Are there any restrictions for a Sikh to donate organs after death? In fact if the soul transends the physical body, and organ donation can only do good to relieve suffering, should all Sikhs consider it a moral (if not religious) obligation to donate their bodies after death?
  3. I think bhaji tkkookar is havign a big joke on us, or is trying to prove himself a fool.
  4. Being a Bachelor of Science myself, I would want all scientific evidence before I believed this story. Just because someone tells a story, it doesn't make it fact. In fact, this kind of thing can be counter-productive in recruiting educated folks to Sikhism. People in villages might be wooed into Sikhism by it, but in general, people should seek more spiritual or selfless fulfillment from their religion. They should not see religion has a health insurance policy, or an investment, i.e. I pray, I will be healthy, I will be wealthy.
  5. I cannot disagree with anyone, but hopefully I can contribute in a useful way...my eyes opened wider than ever when I experienced the words of a wedding ceremony being prjected in English on a screen in my gurudwara. The "gorer" guests were impressed with the sacred words expressed in the ceremony. The original Sikh teachings cannot be changed, and even the language can be said to be sacred (Gurmukh) but it does not mean the message means less in a different language. Come on people, Sikhism should be about Universality, inclusivity. NOT exclusivity. We are not our own or a doctrine's servants, but those of the creator. Are we not?
  6. Isn't it ironic veer ji that you used the smilie to ask a question if it is ok to bow?? 140899[/snapback] It was deliberate. It had two meanings. I'm so clever and funny. Thanks for everyone for their advice. As for karate, it is NOT Kung Fu. It is Japanese where Kung Fu is Chinese. I say this as some of your advice seemed to mix the two. All useful advice though.
  7. I recently started karate and we have bow when entering the dojo. THis is just standing up and lowering body, Japanese style. Before lesson begins and often at end, we are required to go on our knees then bow once to denote respect to the teacher, then again to denote respect to those watching. This is not religious, it is merely a Japanese martial arts custom. It probably does originate from religion, way back, but there are no religious elements to the ettiquette involved. I was just wondering if this undermines a Sikhi's actions in a Gurudwara. I would say not because because bowing is customary rather than religious and denotes different meanings. Forgive me for my lack of understanding.
