  1. :cool2: Don't forget to appoint me as your next taskmaster or as your secretary :biggrin2: You will need a secretary to keep your thoughts s e c r e t for you :excited:

You're keen. Not sure I can trust someone so eager to be party to my machevellian shenanigans. I'll have to keep an eye on you...

  2. Ah you're lucky. I've had to go the Midlands quite a lot in recent years. I think I must have done something bad in a previous life.

Anyway, I think you might be right, I've just googled them and they appear to have turned themselves into the 'Bina Musicals' of the Midlands. In fact, thinking about it, somethings just occurred to me; Ive been to Sikh neighbourhoods all over the world, from Toronto to California, from Vancouver to Kuala Lumpar, from Southall to Wolverhampton and I've never seen a bookshop in any of them. Are desis afraid of books ? Is the fact that a bookshop turns itself into a music shop not indicative of our intellectual decline ?

Oh, that's a shame. The last time I visited DTF they had shelves full of the most beautiful hardcover books on Sikh history - in English too - as well as the usual paperbacks, religious paintings, etc. If I'm ever in that neck of the woods I'll pop in to Bina Musicals.

I think the internet probably has a lot to do with the issue you identified. Back in the day books were the only way one could learn about Sikhi in the English language. Nowadays Wikipedia has all that info and more I think. But still, there's something about those DTF books that was special.

There was also the Sikh Missionary* Society in... I want to say Hayes in Middlesex but I'm not sure. They were very active in printing leaflets and booklets about Sikhi in English.

*I should clarify for non-Uk dwellers that the Sikh Missionary Society weren't the type of missionaries that get a bad rap today, I.E Dasam Granth Sahib issue; they were merely missionaries in the classic sense of the word.

  3. I used to have loadsa Sikh books published by a company called 'DTF'. I think they're based on the Soho Rd, Brum. Thats who I thought he was. Thats why I was usually so nice to him. I thought he was the major Sikh book publisher. I thought he'd come in handy when I finally decide to write a book. I'm gutted. :angry2:

Me too. They published "Saint Soldier" a great account of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's life, as well as many others. I think DTF is still open, but it's a shop selling books and musical instruments. I think they're out of the publishing business now. I could be wrong, I haven't been since I was 11 and went to see family in B'ham.

  4. To my shame I wasn't aware of the controversy surrounding this Raag Mala debate. Unlike most other issues of this nature, the individuals for and against read like a who's who of modern Sikh history, with notable personalities on both sides. Fascinating. Utterly fascinating. I wonder which side is in the right?

  5. I said "the only Jathebandi of any significance which disputes the Raagmala is the AKJ", and to rebut this point, you've given us a list of names of individuals. You haven't 'destroyed' anything. I don't dispute that there are people who may personally retain some doubts about raagmalas authenticity. Please tell me which contemporary major Sikh jathebandi other than the AKJ alleges that Raagmala is not Gurbani.

You seem completely hysterical, accusing every single person who disagrees with you of being a liar, a hypocrite or a trouble-maker in those big, silly capital letters. Why are you so bitter?

When someone can't distinguish between friend or foe, it's time to step back for a while and reappraise exactly what affect being a purported person of God is having on one's mind and soul.

    It is very entertaining though.

  6. 18 - 25 is young. These aren't mythological times or even times of Guru Sahib when Sikhs of that age were the finished article. Like it or not, jathedari is going to involve a certain level of political movement.

To pretend as if such a Jathedar will be able to lock himself away from the world in samadhi and make all decisions based on his bhagti is not going to happen whilst the corrupt apparatus around such an individual is in full force.

In this particular age someone with kamayi AND knowledge of how to play the various vultures and hyenas that will circle such an individual is essential. A "green" young Singh who hasn't a clue about the darker side of life will be chewed up and spat out by those devious old men.

  7. This isn't an argument on something small, rather it is an argument on the only one who gives us life: Guru Sahib himself. Ram Rai was excommunicated for changing one word of Guru Sahib. Do you know just how serious Guru Sahib and each of his Angs are? More valuable than everything in the world put together.
