Deep Sidhu killed in road accident: Two days on, truck driver arrested
Police said the driver has been identified as Qasim Khan, a resident of village Singar, Nuh. According to police, the driver said he was transporting coal from Ahmedabad to Muzaffarnagar at the time of the incident.
Two days after Punjabi actor and activist Deep Sidhu died in a road accident after his Mahindra Scorpio allegedly rammed into a truck on Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) highway in Sonepat, police Thursday arrested the truck driver in the case.
Police said the driver has been identified as Qasim Khan, a resident of village Singar, Nuh. According to police, the driver said he was transporting coal from Ahmedabad to Muzaffarnagar at the time of the incident. Police sources said the accused was arrested from Delhi Bypass.
Jaspal Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Kharkhoda police station, said the accused truck driver admitted during questioning that the incident took place due to his negligence.
“He claimed the truck was moving and he hit the brake due to negligence on his part, following which the Scorpio rammed into rear of his truck,” he said.
Police said he would be produced in a court in Sonepat tomorrow and taken on remand.
Deep Sidhu’s brother, Surjeet, had filed a police complaint at Kharkhoda police station, claiming that the truck driver had applied brakes suddenly, which resulted in the accident, claiming Sidhu’s life. An FIR was registered under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence

Political bystanders sans voting rights, Sikh, Hindu refugees watch drama unfold
Only promises, no citizenship for them
The families living in Amritsar said they were at the mercy of intelligence agencies and other authorities, who ask them to get their refugee status renewed every year.
Still waiting to become Indian citizens, refugee Sikh and Hindu families from Afghanistan and Pakistan are just political bystanders in the Punjab poll process. Several such families reside in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and even Delhi. Many among them who spoke to The Indian Express said they were tired of making appeals to political parties to give them citizenship.
“Don’t talk about it. There is no use of making any demand. We are tired now,” said Ajitpal Singh, owner of Khalsa Tyre at Jahajhgarh market when asked if the Afghan refugees had any hope from the political parties to get them citizenship.
“Political parties don’t do anything for their voters. We don’t even have votes,” he said.
The families living in Amritsar said they were at the mercy of intelligence agencies and other authorities, who ask them to get their refugee status renewed every year. And then there is the constant fear of being asked to leave, apart from limited legal rights as compared to Indian citizens.
The BJP-led Union government had passed CAA in December 2019, however, Congress government in Punjab had passed resolution against Citizenship Amendment Act in January 2020.
As CM, Capt Amarinder Singh had vowed to fight tooth and nail against the CAA. After forming a new party and entering into an alliance with the BJP, he hasn’t spoken on the issue.
After passing of CAA, local BJP unit had mobalised Hindu and Sikh families migrated from the Afghanistan and Pakistan and arranged their meeting with then Amritsar DC Shiv Dular Singh in 2020.
Families had requested DC to give them benefit of new law as soon as possible. However, nothing has happened yet for these families.
Another refugee Surjit Singh said, “There are around seven Afghan families in Amritsar and 25 Pakistan Sikh families. We all had applied under the old provision in law to get citizenship. But that was like an impossible law. Under old law, we were able to apply for citizenship only after 11 years of living as refugees. Then there was long process to apply for citizenship. I don’t know anyone who got citizenship under old law though they were eligible. We all are eligible under the new law.”
It is interesting that despite running campaign to justify CAA, the state BJP has not made any effort to bring the benefits of law to those who actually faced religious prosecution.
On why Hindus and Sikh refugees in Punjab and Delhi have failed to get any benefit of CAA so far, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “Rules are being framed under the law and these families will get citizenship as soon as rules are framed.”

Trudeau invokes rare emergency powers in attempt to quell protests
Emergencies Act gives government broad powers for 30 days, but prime minister is not expected to call in the military
The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has invoked legislation that gives his government sweeping powers to fight a growing number of “illegal and dangerous” blockades across the country.
The first prime minister to invoke the Emergencies Act, Trudeau said the measures would be time-limited and only apply to specific geographic regions. “We are not preventing the right of people to protest legally,” he said, adding that the military would not be deployed. “The act is to be used sparingly and as a last resort.”
Hours before Trudeau’s announcement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta announced that they had seized a truck full of firearms at blockade near the US border.
The Emergencies Act, which goes into effect for a month, allows the federal government to bar people from gathering in certain locations. It could also allow officials to conscript the use of private tow trucks. The deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, said the Act would bar the use of crowdfunding websites for illegal activities and punish companies whose trucks were being used in the protests.
The recent hack of the crowdfunding site GiveSendGo revealed substantial financial support from outside Canada, which Freeland called an attack on democracy. “This is about following the money. This is about putting an end to these illegal blockades. Consider yourself warned,” she said.
While both the city of Ottawa and the province of Ontario have declared states of emergency, the use of the Emergencies Act is the most forceful use of government power so far in fighting the blockades.
The act replaced the War Measures Act in 1988 but is more limited in scope. The revised act requires parliamentary oversight and all measures must comply with the country’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
As the protests cripple trade routes and paralyse city streets, Trudeau said border officials were already turning away Americans trying to enter the country to join the demonstrations.
The prime minister’s unprecedented move comes amid growing worry from federal officials that protesters are increasingly unwilling to leave the blockades, as well as the rising prospect of violence.
The RCMP said on Monday that 11 people were arrested and detained and police seized 13 long guns, handguns, multiple sets of body armour, a machete, a “large quantity” of ammunition, and high-capacity magazines. For more than two weeks, protesters have blocked the border crossing near the town of Coutts, Alberta.
In a statement, police said they recently “became aware of a small organised group within the larger Coutts protest” that had access to weapons and “was said to have a willingness to use force against police” if any attempts were made to “disrupt” the blockade.
The Alberta premier, Jason Kenney, said the arrests and seizure of firearms “underscores the severity” of the situation.
In Ottawa, dozens of semi-trucks remained idling in front of the prime minister’s office – the third week of an occupation by protesters from across the country. A small crowd, including a number of children, braved frigid temperatures in the nation’s capital to protest public health measures and were unfazed by news of the Emergencies Act.
While elements of the demonstration had a festive feel, including volunteers handing out food and music blasting from a stage, other scenes evoked the dug-in mentality of the convoy. Groups guarded jerry-cans of fuel stashed at street corners amid the hum of generators in camper vans.On Monday, an Ontario judge granted an injunction to enforce noise and idling bylaws related to the protests in Ottawa. The injunction effectively gives police a new tool for charging protesters in violation of a court order that bars fireworks, truck horns and idling.
Ottawa’s mayor tweeted that a number of trucks had started moving out of residential areas as part of an agreement with protest leaders, but cautioned that it could take days for many of the trucks to leave, calling it a “complex” operation.
But at a press conference, organisers of the convoy said protesters would remain until mandates were removed. Tamara Lich said Trudeau’s use of the Emergencies Act was “extreme”, but that the prospect of increased federal powers to end the blockades would deter protesters.
“No matter what you do, we will hold the line,” said Lich. “There are no threats that will frighten us. We will hold the line.”

Nail driven into woman’s head to ‘guarantee’ baby boy in Pakistan
The woman thought that if she hammered the nail to her head, she could birth a son instead of the girl she was pregnant with. Authorities learned of the incident after it went viral on social media.
A so-called faith healer in the Pakistani city of Peshawar is being sought Wednesday by authorities, after advising a pregnant woman to hammer a nail on her forehead so that she could deliver a baby boy.
Neurologist Haider Suleman, who treated the victim at Lady Reading Hospital, said although the nail had penetrated the woman’s skull, it had not reached her brain.
“She said that a woman in her locality did the same [hammered a nail] and gave birth to a boy even though the ultrasound had shown her unborn child to be a girl,” Suleman told Pakistani news outlet Dawn.
Faith healers are a common avenue in Pakistan for people seeking spiritual solutions to their problems. Most of these healers are Islamic clerics and other religious people.
The incident came to the attention of authorities after the victim’s x-ray went viral. Police examined the content to work through the case.
“The team will also investigate why [the] incident was not reported to [the] police by the treating doctor,” local police chief Abbas Ahsan said.
Woman’s husband threatened to leave her
It was unclear if the woman hammered the nail into her own head or if someone helped her, but according to Suleman, it all happened in the woman’s home. Family members tried unsuccessfully to pry the nail out of her head, the doctor said.
The woman is said to already have had three daughters and was expecting a fourth when she hammered the nail on her forehead.
Hospital staff told Dawn that the woman said her husband was unhappy with her because she would not bear a boy, so he threatened to leave her.
Baby boys are usually preferred across South Asian countries, including in Pakistan, as they are thought to provide parents with better social and economic security.

Why do parents just send their daughters like this to any random country?
I believe it's due to the misconception everything is a "fairytale" overseas and it will raise their economic status. Like I mentioned before, the social fabric of Panjab is tearing apart. Some parents themselves set up contract marriages for their daughters to move abroad or just send them off alone to countries like Saudi Arabia, Cyprus etc.

So what is the explanation? Is it due to a different pronunciation in the Doabi dialect that most of you speak (I know most of you have roots in the Doaba region)?
Replacing 'i' with 'e' in certain words is a characteristic of Doaba Panjabi. For example, the word 'khich' (to pull) is pronounced as 'khech', 'vich' (inside) is pronounced as 'bech' and 'pind' is pronounced as 'pend'.
Doab lies between Beas River and the Satluj River and comprises of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr districts and certain areas of Ludhiana district. Doaba dialect is also spoken in Toba Tek Singh and Faisalabad districts of Pakistan due to post-1947 migration of Muslim populace from East Panjab.
Majority of diaspora Sikhs (especially from Britain) trace their origins to Doaba so you will come across this style of Panjabi more than others when overseas.

Punjab elections: Apart from 75% job quota to Punjab youth, BJP manifesto also promises 35% reservation for women in all government jobs, including contractual ones. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA released its manifesto for the February 20 Punjab assembly polls here on Saturday, promising a slew of sops for various sections, including 75% reservation in all government jobs for youngsters from the state, an unemployment allowance, 35% reservation for women in government jobs and massive infrastructure development.
The manifesto also promises 50% reservation in private jobs for the youngsters of Punjab. The BJP-JJP government in neighbouring Haryana had earlier passed a law giving 75% quota in private sector jobs to youngsters domiciled in the state. The, Punjab and Haryana high court, however, has granted a stay on the law.
The BJP manifesto for the Punjab polls says a dope test will be mandatory before filing nominations for elections.
An unemployment allowance of ₹4,000 per month will be given to all graduates for two years after the completion of their degrees, it says.
The manifesto promises 35% reservation for women in all government jobs, including contractual ones.
It also says fast-track courts will be established to deal with any kind of violence, harassment and oppression against women. A special law will be enacted to deal with the cases of brides abandoned by NRI grooms, the manifesto says.
The BJP is contesting the Punjab polls in an alliance with former chief minister Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).
The “Sankalp” document of the saffron party was released in the presence of Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Som Parkash, BJP leaders Dushyant Gautam and Tarun Chugh and Amarinder Singh’s son Raninder Singh, among others.
The BJP-led alliance had earlier released an 11-point “Sankalp” (pledge or commitment) document and another manifesto for the rural areas, which had promised a complete loan waiver for farmers with less than five acres of land-holding.
Puri said the saffron party plans to revive Punjab’s economy with an infrastructure development fund of ₹1 lakh crore, which will be spent over a period of five years.
The party promised “zero tolerance to sacrilege”, saying fast-track courts will be set up to decide such cases in a time-bound manner.
A “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” will be constituted for addressing the grievances of the families affected by terrorism, who have been ignored by successive regimes for the last three decades, and a compensation of ₹5 lakh will be given to each family, the party said.
The manifesto promises stringent laws to disrupt the drug-supply chain in the state and the setting up of a special drug prevention task force in each district. It also says fast-track courts will be set up to expedite the investigation of drugs-related offences.
The manifesto talks about a ₹5,000 crore commitment for MSP and crop diversification.
It says special incentives will be provided for the revival of the medium, small and micro enterprises (MSMEs), including electricity at ₹4 per unit to such units and at ₹5 per unit to all other industries. Free electricity up to 300 units will be provided to each and every household and the tariff after the consumption of 300 units will be ₹3 per unit.
The party promised that the honorarium for anganwadi workers and accredited social health activists will be increased to ₹10,000 per month and ₹6,000 per month respectively.
Free hostel facilities will be provided to the SC students undergoing graduation and post-graduation courses. Funds will be provided from the state budget for the payment of the post-matric scholarship dues to SC students. A scholarship of ₹2,000 per month will be given to all the meritorious students. Guru kripa canteens will be established across the state to provide nutritious meals for ₹5, the BJP promised in its manifesto. The manifesto promised a medical insurance policy for providing free medical treatment to journalists and their families. “Media personnel will be exempted from toll tax”, the saffron party said in its manifesto.

3-fold rise, 25% candidates in Punjab face criminal cases
Jupinderjit Singh
Chandigarh, February 11
Candidates with criminal cases have risen by almost three times in Punjab with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) fielding the highest number of such nominees.
The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Punjab Election Watch claimed this in a report after analysing the self-sworn affidavits of 1,276 candidates of the total 1,304 in fray.
521 crorepatis, up 4%
107 of them from Congress | 89 SAD | 60 BJP | 16 BSP | 11 SAD (S) | 81 AAP | 16 PLC
A Mere 7% women candidates in the fray
The report was released today by ADR Trustee Jaskirat Singh and Parvinder Singh Kittna and Harpreet Singh of Punjab Election Watch. Of the 1,276 candidates analysed, 315 or 25 per cent have declared criminal cases against them. The figure was 100 or 9 per cent (out of 1,145) in the 2017 elections. Among the 315 candidates, 65 belong to the SAD, 58 AAP, 27 BJP, 16 Congress, four SAD (Sanyukt) and three each BSP and Punjab Lok Congress (PLC).
At least 218 candidates (17 per cent) have cases with serious offences. Of them, 60 belong to the SAD, 27 AAP, 15 BJP, nine Congress, three each SAD (Sanyukt) and BSP and two PLC. Besides, 15 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women, including two of rape. Four candidates have cases related to murder, while 33 have attempt-to-murder charges against them. At least 57 (49%) of 117 constituencies are in the “red alert” category. Such constituencies are those where three or more contestants have criminal cases against themselves. Also, 521 (41%) candidates are crorepatis. In 2017, 428 (37%) of 1,145 candidates were crorepatis.
The role of money power in elections is evident from the fact that all major political parties have fielded wealthy candidates. Of 521 such nominees, 89 belong to the SAD, 107 Congress, 81 AAP, 60 BJP, 16 each BSP and PLC and 11 SAD (Sanyukt).

Since 1947 we have only been able to produce a few critically acclaimed movies, some of whom are Satluj De Kandey, Marhi Da Deeva, Shaheed e Mohabbat, Shaheed Uddham Singh (Raj Babbar one), Des Hoya Pardes, Waris Shah Ishq Daa Waaris etc. A lot of potential is there, especially with a wider Punjabi audience from Pak who have started prefering Punjabi cinema over Bollywood (also due to the fact that they consider most East Punjabi or Sikhan di movies as family friendly - even though some include cringy double meaning jokes). We still lag a decade behind Bollywood (they were producing mindless comedies and romantic movies in the 90s and 00s but have progressed alot in the last decade with indie cinema and shows).
In mainstream Punjabi cinema only a few try different subjects, the likes of Gippy Grewal and Amrinder Gill. But maybe Punjabis are not ready for the change yet.
I think there was an article that said Panjabis prefer light-hearted family comedy movies so artists tend to make movies on that because other genres won't make them much money.

Vote for party that rules at Centre: Pak Sikh MLA Arora advises Punjab voters
One of two Sikh MLAs in Pakistan’s Punjab assembly, Ramesh Singh Arora, has asked the electorate of Indian Punjab to give a decisive mandate in favour of the party that rules at the Centre
Updated on Feb 08, 2022 01:34 AM IST
There is a piece of advice to the Punjab voters from an elected Sikh representative on the other side of the border. One of two Sikh MLAs in Pakistan’s Punjab assembly, Ramesh Singh Arora, has asked the electorate to give a decisive mandate in favour of the party that rules at the Centre. “A state government having a bonding with the Centre brings prosperity,” he told HT in a telephonic conversation.
Arora, who represents Narowal, one of the nine constituencies reserved for the minority candidates, was upbeat over opening of the Kartarpur corridor with the efforts of both Indian and Pakistan governments. He stressed for reopening of direct trade routes between the two countries.
“East Punjab is key for India and Pakistan relations, so there needs to be a stable government,” he said. In case the geo-economy opens up, Punjab on both sides will be benefitted, said Arora, who was in Indian Punjab in 2014 to attend the NRI Sammelan.
He is the general secretary of the minorities’ wing of Nawaz Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League and also runs an NGO. Pakistan Punjab’s assembly has 372 MLAs, out of which nine are from the minority communities.
“Indian Punjab is an agrarian state that supplies food grain to the entire country and if borders open up for trade, both sides will be benefitted,” he said, citing the example of free trade in European countries.

SGPC flays removal of Sikh general Hari Singh Nalwa's statue in Pakistan's Haripur

Amritsar, February 4
The SGPC and Chief Khalsa Diwan have condemned the removal of a statue of Sikh general Hari Singh Nalwa in Haripur district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. A video clip of removal of the statue has gone viral on the social media.
Take stern action
If this idol has been removed then it is reprehensible. Earlier, the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore was damaged by some mischievous people. The Pakistan authorities should take stern action. — Nirmal Singh, President, Chief Khalsa Diwan
The statue of the Sikh warrior on the horseback with a sword in his hand was erected in 2017 on the Siddique-i-Akbar square in Haripur (district named after Nalwa).
Sources said the statue was removed by the local authorities after some religious parties objected to its installation at the intersection named after first caliph of Islam Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.
Nalwa was commander-in-chief of the Sikh Khalsa Fauj, the army of the Sikh Empire. He is known for his role in the conquests of Kasur, Sialkot, Attock, Multan, Kashmir, Peshawar and Jamrud.
On behalf of SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, SGPC’s publicity incharge Harbhajan Singh Vakta appealed to the Pakistan government and the Evacuee Property Trust Board to clarify on the matter. He has also approached Amir Singh, president, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, in this regard.
Chief Khalsa Diwan president Nirmal Singh said: “If this idol has been removed then it is reprehensible. Earlier, the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore was damaged by some mischievous people. The Pakistan authorities should take stern action,” he said.

In Punjabi movies they say stuff like "inj naa kar" In Doaba we dont use the word "inj" we say "idha naa kar" or "adha na kar" In movies they also say "aa kive hoya" we dont say "kive" but say "aa kidha hoya" etc
The way they speak in the movies is how the punjabi news reporters speak or how the they speak at award functions etc
Panjabi films can make Panjabi language confusing (except a few well-done films).
They tend to use a mixture of dialects, the characters can all be from the exact same place in the film but they're speaking Panjabi from completely different areas. So it's never clear if the film is in Doabi, Majhi or Malwai Panjabi. Script writers need to pay more attention to what they write. They also don't do enough research when making period films set in 20th century Panjab.
They've started to include more English words and the Panjabi sounds different to how it was spoken before.
The depth of Panjabi as a language can never be truly captured in these movies because they're usually romantic-comedies where someone is trying to get to Canada or England.
I believe films and songs have the potential to bring change to society and the Panjabi industry should be using it to show history and better representations of Panjab and Panjabi language which isn't just in rom-coms set abroad.
