An Indian minister who drank a glass of dirty water from a 'holy' river to prove to locals it's safe has been hospitalised after falling ill.

Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab, was airlifted to New Delhi after downing the polluted water from the Kali Bein.

Video showing Mann scooping up a glass of water and downing the filthy liquid has since gone viral.

He was taken to the Apollo Indraprastha Hospital in Sarita Vihar and was admitted overnight .

Medics said Mann had developed an infection and was treated by a multi-disciplinary team.

According to New Indian Express, as soon as medics completed a range of tests on the minister before he was released from hospital.

Disgusting! He's also rolling out a new initiative to clean up Panjab's rivers.

The state of rivers in Panjab is very saddening. Ravi river is the most polluted in the world (although most of it falls in Pakistan today).

I think the Amritsar region has always been a hot spot for christian missionary activity, even during the British era Amritsar had a lot of that. You would think that Amritsar would have the strongest Sikhi and that a place like Doaba would be a Christian convert area.

People in Doaba are quite tribalistic, not sure if that is the right word. But like a couple of years back there were riots between bhamans and chamars in phagwara, setting busses on fire, public buildings etc   similar thing happened when a ravidassia preacher was shot in Austria. Dalit music is a big thing there! Especially during the voting season. I cant see the missionaries having a big impact there, but at the same time if they do worm their way in then the effects will be devastating. Or it could result in riots ...

If Doaba starts becoming Christian then I'm guessing it will start from Jalandhar.

Doaba is being targeted by missionaries. After Gurdaspur and Amritsar, Jalandhar has the 3rd highest percentage of Christians (1.19%) followed by Firozpur, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala. Smallest percentage of Christians is in central and south Malwa (Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Bathinda, Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot all below 0.20%).

  3. Delhi Sikh body to run propagation drive to curb 'conversion' in Punjab

    Amritsar, July 15

In a move ‘parallel’ to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s (SGPC’s) ‘Dharam Parchar Lehar’, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has declared to launch an identical drive to curb ‘conversion’ in Punjab. This drive would be initiated from Amritsar shortly

DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka said the Delhi Sikh body would soon open its office at Guru Tegh Bahadur Nivas in Amritsar. “We plan to kickstart the ‘Dharam Parchar Lehar’ in Punjab within a span of 10 days in which our Sikh preachers will visit different parts of the state,” he said

When asked about chances of conflict between the two Sikh bodies, he said, “The SGPC too has been conducting ‘dharam parchar’ in Delhi. The SGPC has also started special bus service for Delhi-based ‘sangat’ for visiting shrines in Punjab, health services and other activities on parallel mode. Likewise, we have resources and we will do it in Punjab,” he said.

On its part, the SGPC’s Dharam Parchar Committee has been running campaign ‘Ghar Ghar Andar Dharamsaal’ since Bibi Jagir Kaur’s tenure in Punjab. The aim was to counter the impact of conversion in which Sikh preachers have been visiting remote villages and border belt to propagate Gurbani, Sikh Rehat Maryada (code of conduct), Sikh history and Sikh principles.

jalandhar is like 70-80% Hindu and has high amount of dalits. Also they keep saying he is building the Church since past 3 4 years now. Not sure if it has been built yet or no. If you ever go to Jalandhar area you will ask yourself if you are even in Punjab.

"Lower castes" have been converting to Christianity since the British times from Hinduism, Islam and Sikhi. Some end up converting back. In Pakistan, there is a community called "Deendar". They're Muslim Dalits who became Christians during the British Raj and they became Muslim again after independence.

I found this on Christian history in Panjab

"A group of female Christians from the “Chuhara” community outside a Punjabi Church in Sialkot. Taken in 1909.

Termed as the “Holy Spirit Movement” or simply the “Chuhra Movement” by the Sialkot Missionaries, the mass conversion of the “Chuhra” community (who were regarded untouchables and the lowest of all castes) into Christianity reached its peak at the beginning of the 20th century.  In their religious life, Muslim Chuhras were called “Bala Shahi”, while the Hindus were called “Balmiki”.

The Chuhra mass movement started with the conversion of a thirty-year-old Chuhra, named Ditt, in 1873. He lived in Shahbdike, a village in Sialkot and began preaching the Gospels inside his segregated community. By 1915, 100% of all the Chuhras living in Sialkot district were Christians."

But these people in Punjab follow a very weird version of Christianity. Have you seen the way they dance and jump and sing those tacky songs lol. I dont think even 90% of them know much about the history of Christianity. Christianity is like a dera to these people. Why are people in India so dumb? Don't they have any sense of self awareness or questioning regarding their beliefs. I guarantee you if some new dera comes up they will jump ship. I have met some of these "Christians" in doaba area and trust me you would be surprised by what they consider Christianity.

There are statues of Jesus resembling Hinduism gods in India.

And Sikhs in Panjab feel proud sending their children to Christian convent-run schools because they associate them with English.

One such school in Gurdaspur dist. would discourage speaking Punjabi and students had to pray in churches based on the premises. No wonder Christianity is rife in that district (7.68%).

There is a new Muslim bhangra singer from UK called Raf Saperra. Not only has he made a music video where he is lusting after and flirting with a Sikh girl who has a prominently displayed kada, but the song has been produced by so called Sikh Sukhshinder Shinda and the background of the video is full of so called Sikhs wearing kaday, egging on the Muslim singer to flirt with the Sikh girl and sing about her lustfully.

It's very wrong to display a Kada in these music videos.

Similarly, so called "Sikh" Panjabi singers also have a strange obsession with Muslim (Pakistani) culture and women in their videos. A lot of Muslims had objections with this song because the Panjabi singer used Islamic vocabulary and Abaya.

The lyrics are even worse, the singer says "I stopped using 'beautiful' and started saying Mashah Allah".  These songs look harmless but they are damaging to our community.

Jadon Paunda C Main Photo Koi Vi
    Likh Bhejdi Shubhan Allah C
    Mai Vi Beutiful Kehno Hatya
    Lagg kehan Gaya Mashah Allah

British general and scholar Lieutenant-General Sir George MacMunn (1869–1952) noted in his writings "It is only necessary for a feeling to arise that it is impious and disgraceful to serve the British, for the whole of our fabric to tumble like a house of cards without a shot being fired or a sword unsheathed". To this end, it became British policy to recruit only from those tribes whom they classified as members of the 'martial races', and the practice became an integral part of the recruitment manuals for the Army in the British Raj. According to Dr. Jeffrey Greenhut, "The Martial Race theory had an elegant symmetry. Indians who were intelligent and educated were defined as cowards, while those defined as brave were uneducated and backward."

The British regarded the 'martial races' as valiant and strong but also intellectually inferior, lacking the initiative or leadership qualities to command large military formations. They were also regarded as politically subservient or docile to authority.  For these reasons, the 'martial races' theory did not lead to officers being recruited from them; recruitment was based on social class and loyalty to the British Raj.

Many Punjabi communities were included in this "martial race" list by the colonisers.

From an anonymous list (c.1860) titled -"Rajputs"- in the collection of the British Library of the races declared by the British as martial races

They are listed below in alphabetical order:

    Awans

    Cheema
    Dogra
    Garhwalis
    Gujjars
    Gurkhas

Look at this from the same source. The way goray are describing our pendus is exactly like I hear them talking about their pet dogs - seriously! Essentially, they thought of our pendus as slow-witted, docile people. And they've mentioned this a few times in historical sources. That's what the descendants of these people can't face up to.

I had never heard of the cousin thing. That is shocking and disgusting. I had heard about Punjabis sleeping around behind closed doors, but never about incest. I imagine it is because my relations who know about it find it so appalling and shameful that they don’t even want to mention it.

It’s sad because I used to think that, despite our moral erosion, we would never stoop to certain levels (for example, cousin relationships that are apparently routine for Muslims).

I have never heard of the cousin relationships in villages either.

But don't certain Sikh communities practice cousin-marriages, (although to a far lower extent than Muslims)? I think the Khatri community who came from Pakistan still does them but the paternal cousins can't intermarry, only maternal.

It's not common now but a Khatri girl told me about a case in her family which happened many years back, the child sadly passed away due to health complications because the parents were cousins.

  11. Another reason why people in old photos looked darker was because were more likely to get exposed to the sun than the average Panjabi today. They didn't have any help from labourers from central Indian states either.

This is how every farmer would've worked before

This is how most people work in Punjab today. There's more shade and protection from sun exposure.

They were dirt poor and completely illiterate, very limited options for them. Proper pendus.

Village Panjabis who served in the army were generally poorer and didn't own enough land.

There are even British guides on how to recruit them and which ones are better fit for the army according to area!

"As regards military qualities, it is doubtful whether there is anything to choose between the two. ‘'The Manjha Sikh is as a rule brighter, smart-er, quicker, and more refined than the Malwai, while the latter on the other hand is more stubborn, works quite as conscientiously but less cheerfully

    * It may be mentioned, however, that the Sikhs of the country between the Beas and the Sutlej, i.e., Kapurthala, Jullundur, and Hoshiarpur, are generally called Doaba Sikhs. Their  lands are fertile, and they as a rule prefer agriculture to soldiering. This, coupled with ; he fact that their Sikhism is rather lax, renders them, in the opinion of some commanding officers  somewhat inferior as soldiers to the men of the Malwa and the Manjha."

From the "Handbook on Sikhs for the use of regimental officers"

    https://ia802901.us.archive.org/19/items/handbookonsikhsf00falc/handbookonsikhsf00falc.pdf

"The men of the Manjha are, by nature, very hardy. Though the average of them is smaller physically than the average of the Malwa Sikhs, they are often met with of very powerful physique, they are very hard and full of work, includes from their antecedents to habits of looting, cattle lifting, and rough play, they are not perhaps so quiet and amenable to discipline as Sikhs of other parts, they can carry great weights and are of a fearless and independent sprit."

"The Manjha recruit will show more coolness and freedom from nervousness..."

"Though comparatively a small tract of country, the Manjha gives more men to service than any other tract..."

"The Sikhs of the Doaba are of a much softer type, they are too absorbed in cultivation, for the Doaba is exceedingly fertile, to have leisure for much else. Their Sikhism is very diluted by Hinduism...In the northern parts of the Doaba, recruits should be very carefully selected, as the quality is very poor"

UK Sikh military team visits Pakistan, sparks row

    New Delhi, July 8

Indian intelligence agencies have alerted the security establishment about the visit of a delegation of 12 Sikh soldiers of the British Army to Pakistan under the aegis of the Defence Sikhs Network (DSN).

The DSN in June this year made comments with regard to Operation Bluestar and posted a graphic representation of the Army operation on its Instagram page. The delegation visited Pakistan on June 28 on the invitation of Pakistani Army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa.

The Pakistani army reportedly used the Sikh delegation to show that it was open to all religious communities whereas in reality Sikhs and Hindus were facing hate crimes. The establishment has been apprised about implications of the visit in the backdrop of social media post on Operation Bluestar. — TNS

    ‘Views personal’

A spokesperson of the British High Commission in New Delhi said: “The visit was an opportunity for delegation members to visit places of historical and religious significance. Personal views of army personnel do not necessarily represent views of the Defence Ministry.”

See, the thing is in which ever region you go locals will say "Our Punjabi dialect is correct. Our Grammar too is correct." However, Doaba only use one word for objects or meaning i.e. Door is darwajja. Now, Malwai may be backwards but door is darwajja, Booha or gate. Wind is hwa or poan. Whereas Doaba will only use hwa. Majja is similar to Malwai. Although Doaba is NOT to be underestimated (FWD in technology, economic and Hi Tech) it's not necessarily high in literature.

Overtime, some Panjabi words have been replaced with Hindi ones (Darwaza/Darwaja instead of Buha/Bar etc) especially in Doaba.
