I also find it interesting how Hindus of Punjab have suddenly found their love of Punjabi but rejected the language in the 60's... I really don't think the phrase "Hindu Punjabi" is applicable to the group no longer... they lost that when they rejected the Punjabi language in favour of Hindi...
^^^ Totally agree, everyone is now jumping on the Punjabi bandwagon... all of sudden they now have a punjabi grandma or great grandad which makes them Punjabi by just saying "Chak de phateh" and "balle balle" :blink2: Delhi/Haryana especially is now full of these Hindi speaking Punjabi wannabe's

If anything the last few days have proved how vital Sikh Channel is! Without it we would have no information and everyone would be the dark! Although I was a cynic in the past I will be pledging at least a small monthly payment each month and so are other members of my family only now have we realised how important this channel is... its closure would be catastrophic!!!
I think everyone should set up a direct debit, we need Sikh Channel!!!

I really don't think the Punjab electorate are that blind! They just dont care about Sikhi/Beadbi etc anymore! There are a few but not enough... Sant Samaj was potentially a tool for political leverage but lets face it... they are useless sell-outs! Its our duty to make sure these "sants" are no longer welcome in the West!

The fact that there were 11 Hindu representatives for Akali Dal who won should really illustrate that the party is no longer Sikh based.
In addition the electorate of Punjab no longer care about Sikhi, beadbi or what happened 30 years ago! Its unfortunate but the facts are clear to see...

So basically I been noticing the past couple of days that Sangat TV have been promoting/supporting the idea of Bhagat Ravidas being a Guru etc...
So the first question I'd like to ask is whether Sangat TV considers itself a "Sikh Channel" after all in the Sikh Rehit Maryada we believe in 10 Guru's and thats it! So is Sangat TV now moving in a direction that it can no longer call itself a Sikh Channel?!
Secondly I was actually watching one of the programmes where a very well respected individual Mohinderpal Singh stated the Ravidas community should not separate bani and form a new panth... and yet later on he goes on to say its important to have our own Nagar Kirtans, Gurdwaray etc so our voice is heard! Is that not a contradiction?
I think its very unfortunate in regards to the direction Sangat TV are going! Absolutely every community needs to be represented HOWEVER by continuing to call Bhagat Ravidas Guru...they are outside the edicts of Sikhi... in my opinion.
Its not like calling Bhagat Ravidas a bhagat is some sort of insult or demeaning!... I don't understand what the Ravidas communities opposition is? If they claim its some sort caste discrimination... its not like other "castes" are calling for other bhagats or sants to be called a Guru... furthermore its becoming apparent that in time the Ravidas community is moving further away from the Khalsa panth, just watching their programmes/speechs other than Monhinerpal Singh there is no other Kesh-dhari let alone Amrit-dhari
Its just very disturbing/unfortunate that Sangat TV is allowing this to be promoted under its banner! They might aswell indulge Naamdharis and Radhoswamis whilst their at it!

There is a Gurdwara in Punjab, called Raja Sahib mazare! The Dogs roam freely and one sat next to me in Divan... the sevadars enaourage them to have separate Langar area though...
was surprising to see how disciplined they were compared to normal dogs you see in Punjab... They made no mess in Gurdwara premises and patiently waited for food!

This will give some context and understanding of the history it plays in the Espanola sangat. This painting is in the back of the Gurdwara.
I suppose its a similar story/ direction in a sense to the paintings that were around Harmander Sahib! I can see that painting turning into a part of Gurdwara hertiage/history! If some punjabis had their way they would have already plastered over it!!! Well done for protecting it!

This might be controversial but I think we need a reality check! Yes a Gurdwara is closing down in a prime location but why is that even a factor? There are thousands of Sikhs around the world living in abject poverty and yet we are spending millions in keeping a Gurdwara open in long term unsustainable locations! A $2 million loan to pay off?! Why was that ever seen an acceptable loan to be taken out in the first place?!
I remember a time when Western Sikhs saved the money first then opened up Gurdwaray... started off small even! Now every couple of months I hear about a Gurdwara shutting down because they couldn't pay back the loans... and then appeals are made to donate money! How bout we donate money to the poor instead!? or some sort of long term sustainable project that will have positive affect for the Sikh community! Is someone is ready to fork out 2 million dollars!?!?!
SGPC should use the money to support Sikhi in Punjab not a Gurdwara no-one goes too!!!

*DELETED* Think more carefully before you write next time. I was at Baba jis gurdwara in India and saw a bus load of poor people coming in again and again being housed and fed. What are you on about? Why does Sikh Sangat allow nindya of 'real' saints.
Your experience was different from mine! I didnt say Baba Jaswant was personally responsible... just an example of what stuck in my mind from India!

Its so true when previous posters mentioned the economic woes of the Sikh community!
A Sikh Penji I know whose family live in a Council House due to bankruptcy because the main earner died was rejected for marriage by another family simply because they live in a Council House!!!
I know of many many Sikh Families in UK that are living in abject poverty, usually single parent familes where the farther died young because of alcohol abuse or just left them to fend for themselves! There is no support for these mothers often left with small 2-3 children with bills etc to pay... :sad2:

I agree with Wales85, if Sikhs would take the principle of Daswand and seva more seriously there would be alot less poverty in Punjab!
I once watched a Gurdwara run by Baba Jaswant Singh (Ludiana) India... feed langar to me and my western family but deny it to the poor and needy that looked like they needed it! Felt bad, but I wouldn't blame them to turn to a church if that was the only option! On that occasion we Sikhs didn't help our own!
To make things worse they had built these flats/room for us westerners to stay in whilst the poor slept outside the Gurdwara Gate!
I have seen the denial of Langar in many Gurdwaray in India and even UK (Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Leicester) to the poor and homeless ... bad situation!

There are some from Iran (I don't know if this is Arab... maybe more Persian !?!? )... I met a guy from Tehran a few years ago who said he was Sikh! He didn't have kesh or anything but said they were followers of Guru Nanak... bit like some sindhi SIkhs of Pakistan I suppose.
Apparently there are one or two Gurdwaray in Tehran where most Sikhs and Hindus in Iran live and often share religious buildings out of necessity.

She comes from a sleepy village and is a farmer’s daughter. Only 16 years old, she has dared to take on the state government by refusing to accept a free bicycle, which carries Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s photograph.
More, she has even listed the reason for her refusal to accept the freebie being doled out under the much publicised Mai Bhago Scheme.
“Badal was the Chief Minister when killing of Sikhs started in 1978 and he had even written to central government, which reflects that he also supported army action on Darbar Sahib in 1984,” she has written in a letter that she sent to the principal of the government senior secondary school, Pakhyal, in Hoshiarpur district. She is a student of 10 plus one at the school.
Meet Manjit Kaur. A resident of Chakowal Shekhan village, she is being hailed as another Mai Bhago - the legendary Sikh warrior woman who fought along side Guru Gobind Singh and is said to have stayed on with the Guru as one of his bodyguards.
The girl refused to accept the bicycle by writing an application to the school principal in which she mentioned that Badal, recently bestowed with Panth Rattan-Faqr-e-quam award, was responsible for the turmoil faced by Sikh community in the last several years in, which several members of the community were killed.
She said that while the photo of the CM has been fixed on the basket on the front portion of the bicycle, Mai Bhago’s name is written near the feet - on the chain cover.
In her letter, she mentioned that she had walking to the school for the past 11 years and she can do the same for another year too. “But I would not take the cycle bearing Badal’s photo,” she has stated.
Manjit, who likes to read about the happenings in Punjab, said that she wrote the application on her own. She said that a few weeks ago chief parliamentary secretary Mohinder Kaur Josh had come to their school to distribute the bicycles. But she didn’t want to accept a thing that had the photograph of a person who is in a way responsible for killing of so many Sikhs, so she wrote an application to the principal.
Manjit’s father Gulwinder Singh, a farmer with just three acres of land, is a proud man. “Ever since the news of this application came out, I have been getting calls from people in India and abroad,” he said. The family said that it was Manjit’s decision and she has done whatever she thought was right.

So basically in the summer months I am planning on going to Gujarat to help run a call centre business with a friend who is already established there...
He informed me there a thousands of Sikhs in Gujarat who have moved there for economic reasons as there tends to be rarely any jobs in Punjab... some have been there for generations!
He informed me of a Gujarat Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (GGPC) and that most the Sikhs in Gujarat are different from UK Sikhs on their political and religious views! Hes not a Sikh so didnt dwell on topic...
Im abit apprehensive about engaging with the Gujarati Sikh Sangat... I don't know why, but I just wanted to get a heads up about what to expect!... am I going to walking into a Gurdwara that has Hindu practices!?
So has anyone had any experience with Guji Sikhs, whats the views of Gujarat Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (GGPC) etc.

Okey Im just gonna talk from experience from living in halls during Uni and visiting many friends at different halls/Unis I can relate to how your feeling...
It is difficult!
Now if there has only ever been 2 incidents I would just brush it off! Their most likely drunk... carry on doing your normal routine! A lot of the time I found with some of my friends in an attempt to avoid such people they isolated themselves in their own room! Only cooking when no-one else was in the kitchen, staying in their room all the time! Uni is about meeting different people... therefore you will be doing your flatmates a favour by educating them in being confident around them even if they find you "weird"! Eventually they will be used to you and Amritdhari Sikhs in general and respect you massively...
What uni do you go? Bring friends round from your course preferably so from the same uni... they might be friends friends so if there is any further problems in the future or they unknowlingly ignorant... some can have a word!
If anything the girl that is your flatmate was probably embarrassed by the incident...

Your definition of Masculinity might not be everyone else's definition... for example you mentioned the need to "dress sharp"... could be considered by some as a feminine quality to give a 2nd thought to dress sense.
In addition I noticed an undercurrent of hate because the women that "come" to you want control!? Wrong forum I think....

This apparent Amrit-dhari that is going protesting with the EDL folk... Id like to see the "love" he gets on one of their organised rallies that invites the likes of former NF, Combat 18 and the like amongst their ranks...
