I can't believe what I'm seeing. Fully grown men with big dharis and turbans wearing bryant shirts on and praying in a gurdwara.

You could not make this stuff up.

The state of some American Sikhs. It just goes to show that the depth of stupidity is a bottomless pitt.

This coupled with strange non restriction of returning Uk citizens from wuhan seems to indicate that the powers that be want it to be spread wider .

The spread of immune suppressing 5G network towers seems to coincide with this also .

    Seems like a conspiracy theory.

OP - you handled that situation with grace, respect to you for that.

In terms of "giving an answer", this involves knowing your own religion (which I'm sure you do), but also knowing their religion and (unfortunately) poking holes in it.

Studying a philosophy/religion/spiritual path with the sole intention of finding its faults is a fruitless waist of time and gives you no peace. However, studying with the intention to find similarities and understand differences gives a greater reward (speaking from experience).

The thing about giving someone like that an answer is you first need to know what denomination of christianity she follows. If she's one of the outliers (LDS, 7th day Adventist etc.) then it's easy to put her down. But if she's a hardcore Baptist (or even a Methodist), then it requires more homework on your part ("knowing your Bible", so to speak). And from what you've described, chances are she's a Baptist.

Ultimately, it will end the same way i.e. neither of you will change your faith. But with a little homework, the next time something like this happens, you'll be ready with an answer or two (if needed).

    Truesay.

I did try to handle it as best as I could even though she came out with her BS. I could have easily have refuted her statements. But the thing is I did not go to argue and try and disprove other faiths. That is something that we don't really do.

It's more about focusing on the good aspects of Sikhi and raising awareness of the faith. But she took it as if I am trying to convert others which is wrong. Sikhism is only about teaching. If people want to convert off their own volition that is up to them.

But it's comments like hers that just p1ss you off. I do feel a bit guilty as now I feel I should have said something back instead of just brushing of her comment. I should have really confronted her and told her that is narrow minded ignorant belief she has.

She was a little specky woman that obviously come from the black Americanised christian denominations.

Well if one faith has to be absolutely right then it is ours. Then come up with some examples from her own religion to really throw her off.

    1. Christ said on the cross according to the bible that My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46, KJV)

In comparison our 5th Guru read the following shabad when they were giving shaheedi:

    ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

Your actions seem so sweet to me.

     ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ॥੨॥੪੨॥੯੩॥

Nanak begs for the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

You could also bring up 10 patshah doing ucharan of mittar pyare nu after fighting nonstop for days and watching their sons and beloved sikhs at chamkaur sahib give shaheedi.

Then you could bring up things that makes sikhi so much more complete than christainity.

    examples

    1. No avtar, prophet has sacrificed their whole family like 10th patshah

Abraham who is like a patriach figure for christainity, judaism and islam.

God asked Abraham to sacrifice his own son for him through akash bani, but at the last moment with knife in hand to his own son's threat he backed out. He couldn't do it.  Only 10th patshah was able to send his own sons into battle by giving them permission when they asked.

    2. No avtar prophet has given themselves for shaheedi for the sake of saving another religion like 9th patshah/

    3. 200+ years of history where God himself lived in form of human body through every experience common to us today, so we could look back and learn directly from them and their lessons through history. Whereas Jesus lived for 30 years and so the time frame is shorter.

You could've went on and on and kept going deeper and deeper into sikhi, if she wouldn't interrupt you at every word or leave first.

I'm sure there are plenty of things I could have mentioned to criticise her faith of Christianity such as what you mentioned. But that is something I did not feel comfortable doing as that is not what Sikhs are rightfully told not to do.

It was a catch 22 situation. If I would criticise her faith or come up with reasons why her faith is wrong this could give the wrong impression of Sikhs. So was not sure how to react and respond to her comments. To be honest I was also not prepared to get into a religious debate as I have not done this before.

Sad thing is that there's certain people of other faiths that will try and say their faith is the only way to try and slyly convert others. She took my comment and tried to use it against us that Sikhs believe all faiths lead to God.

Anyways. I hope I did good and had a great response from most people who I gave leaflets to. So not worried about this <banned word filter activated>. lol

I think she was just jealous and full of hate to see non Christian parchaar on the streets of London. She was not even British but some nutcase American who thought she would stick her nose where it did not belong.

It's to be expected that your gonna get haters like this out there who are envious of Sikh growth in the UK.

  5. I have some relative that have come over to UK on sponsership from India. They are looking for empolyment but dont also have much qualifications. They are female btw. Not sure what is the best way for them to get a good job. Apart from obvious retail which does not pay much. other ideas I thought about is factory job. ie probably in southall where they can speak punjab to other people as they dont have good english which is something they prefer as dont feel comfortable working in a place that they will be the only asian/indian.

Any ideas to get a well paid job for them?. I doubt they can secure this without qualifications. ie a levels, degree ect though.  Not sure how to guide them career wise. My aim is to get them ready and be more employable.

Yep that was her intention. To undermine other faiths and say that Chrsitians believe theirs is the only way. While at the same time trying to say all other faiths are wrong. Chrsitians are taught that theirs is the only way to salvation ect. She came across as though she was almost upset that Sikhs were handing out leaflets. As though that is something christians only have a right to do and Sikhs should not do it.I think she so it as a threat against her own faith.

She was suprised to see a Sikh leaflet as that is something that we never do. I regret not saying anything back to point out issues with her own faith. But As Sikhs that is something we are taught not to do. Also I should not have said all faiths lead to God? As makes out Sikhs believe in everthing and anything.

  7. I was recently at a Sikh event. Where I handed out some basic of Sikhi leaflets afterwards that I had on me.

Most people were more then happy to take the leaflets. I even had a good chat with a white gentlemen. Who was knowledgeable about Sikhism and Sikhs. Apart from one ignorant black American Christian woman. Who approached me and said some abnocious things.

She first asked me what Sikhs believe in. I said I have limited knowledge and she should go on the basic of Sikhi website to find out more. I was not there to preach or teach as that is something that a qualified person can do. Hence I was just handing out the leaflets. So even though I had a lot of knowledge I did not think it was worth it and was something that basics of Sikhi parchaar team can do.

Anyways after she inquired more and seemed quite interested and wanted to know more. I said Sikhs believe we all believe in the same God. But we just have a different way of praying. I said Sikhs believe all faiths lead to God. She then said. One faith has to be right. They can't all be? She seemed aware of belief that many Sikhs hold that all paths lead to God.

I was not really out there to get into some long debate. As I was just handing leaflets out as a bit of seva. I then said Sikhs don't believe in converting. This leaflet is just about explaining Sikh beliefs and raising awareness of Sikhs ect. I said Sikhs believe their religion is true and we should let all people believe in what they like and not be discriminated against. To which she seemed to agree. She then finished off by saying Christianity is the only true religion and can only lead God.

I just said okay if that is your opinion and laughed at her comment in a sarcastic way.  I did not bother to reply to what she said or argue. As people like this are not worth engaging in conversation with.

But now I think maybe I should of said something back. She did take the leaflet though and said she would have a read.

I was taken aback however with what she said. Was not expecting someone to come out with that and say such extreme things over a leaflet. It seemed like she was insecure and needed to reaafirm her beliefs.

I think it depends where in Delhi you go. Delhi is a big place. So the Punjabi will be different in each part and area.

I found the Punjabi to be very good in certain parts. It's spoken in a much sweeter and loving way. The Punjabi in certain parts of Punjab sounds quite harsh and pendufied. Especially in the pinds. I did not come across any hindified Punjabi. Apart from the odd word here and there.

I was once stranded in Birmingham as all trains stopped due to stormy weather/snow. So I had to stay 1 night  to catch the next train the following day to London.

Guess what I tried the Soho gurdwara in Bham if they had a place to stay for the night as could not a find a hotel at such short notice. I was just fobbed off and told all rooms are gone and also given a rude look. Like I shouldn't have asked.

Those people at that Gurdwara are very hostile to everyone for some reason.

Eventually ended up finding a a good Airbnb which came in handy.

Have a 21 year old son that is seeing a Bengali girl. Our whole family is trying to keep it quiet so it wont affect his siblings future prospects on the shame and anger we feel.

I know its sad but growing up there was nothing but contempt for the muslim-culture and way of life.  Don't get me wrong I have met some decent people that happened to be muslims but intermarry wasn't even thought of in our darkest dreams. It's very unlikely that this person would convert to Sikhi and the abominable thought that our child could covert to islam would kill us.

He has had some issues in the past but frankly us as parents are losing this battle because we have pleaded with him to stop but he wont stop seeing her. He insists she is not religious but what we can gather is her parents are elderly and don't give a monkeys about how their daughter(s) live their lives. He is easily led and she may have been the listening / sympathetic ear that he felt he missed in his own family. He probably assumed he couldn't. We have forgiven him for some of the stupid things he has done so far and now we cant for this.

His mother is absolutely devastated as she had prospective introductions to girls from our own community lined up within the natural Sikh-Punjabi environment.  Things will be soon coming to a head and he will have to choose  his family or this girl as we wont accept the relationship.

This girl is neither academically sound, above average in looks or wealthy. She is short and fat and doesn't want a Bengali boy from her own community because of the contempt she has for them. The pair of idiots met at work and presumably the relationship started from there. He even has Mrs xxxx (his surname) on his phone as her name. I keep waiting for the relationship to peter out naturally but my wife is afraid its only going to go stronger and he will leave the family forever so it will have to come to a head sooner or later.

My observation is that some of today's 20-25 year olds like my son have the bodies and facets of men but are brain age of about 14-16. Gaming, music and social media influences seem to be the norm and it's horrifying some of the stories you hear about these young idiots. He is a good boy generally, no drugs, alcohol abuse, gambling or other vices but he is directionless currently and refuses to listen to good advice from those around him.

I am at a loss on how to tackle this issue with my own prejudices, the changing face of our society, the despair of our family and the way forward. Any previous experiences shared would be appreciated.

Have you tried fish? That usually solves any problem with a Bengali involved?

    Only joking lol.

Iooks like your boy has fallen in love. Now if you stop him. He will only resent u for it. Try to make him come to his senses.

This whole situation smells fishy. No pun intended...

Does anyone know any room share or rent share in Birmingham or surrounding areas. He will be studying at the Birmingham City University.

He is an Amritdhari Singh and will be studying masters.

Please let me know if there is anything suitable.

    Balait

Try the local newsagents. There's plenty of adverts in the windows. For people with rooms available. Or you could do air BnB room. That's good for people who struggle finding a place to rent. Due to being a student and having no work proof.

absolute pants service was lufthansa  both trips i

first trip Did with them involved nearly 10 hours delays each way going and coming , since my first trips was with a two year old and two 11month olds , I was livid as I used up their food and drink just sitting in Berlin , if they had warned me before the short hop to there from Heathrow I could have popped into Boots and got some more supplies . Oviously never apologized to parents with little kids on the flight . Coming back there was 12 hours delay in Delhi in roasting hot airport (no air con) no vouchers for food, no shops for baby food . The whole thing was so bad it put me off considering them untils more than a decade. Same dodgy treatment , delays, lost my mum in the airport on some assistance transport , had to hang back to find her whilst sending rest of family ahead ....

I have even flown Afghan air literally months before the russian invasion, and that was better than Lufthansa despite a broken seat meaning my kid brother getting squashed fingers .

I hate the faff of going to Delhi also but I refuse to spend extra hours on the flight to that hellhole so usually fly non-stop , I agree Jet is better than AIR India so that's who we use for domestic flights to siliguri or amritsar . Amritsar airport security are a shifty bunch mind you Delhi domestic are just as bad

Delhi is actually quite good. Ie all the major tourist sites are located there. Aswell as all the shopping and restaurants ect. Punjab is good for the pinds . But does not have much shopping areas and food places.

I have travelled extensively in Delhi. It's has some good places.

Many historic Gurdwaras are there. Bangla Sahib, Sis Ganj, Rakab Ganj. There are many affluent areas also.

Also used to travel by Turkmenistan Airlines but that’s shut down.

Air India goes direct from Birmingham to Amritsar which is good for me.

Heathrow has plenty of flights to Delhi. But that’s 2 hour drive for me and saves taxi money.

The best legroom is virgin. I found air India to be a bit more cramped. But the food was lovely. Although I usually pack my own snacks to have inbetween.

My home town is Amritsar, only 10 minutes from golden temple. So goes direct. But it still a 40 - 50 minute drive from airport to my home.

some people have been passed around like an old newspaper you probably can catch something by just sitting nxt to them.

It only takes one girl to go with a guy and get all kinds of STDs.

Remember the girl might be her first time. But the guy could have seen many girls ..even a few hookers. Before you know it she has caught something.

You can also catch many STDs from just skin contact and touching. As they spread like that with minimal contact.

Yep this is a point. The youth being sexualised by the media. Such as in films. They encourage love, affairs. Ect.

We can't really do much about it though as we can't control the media. We can only give advice to the youngsters not to get influenced.

Turkmenistan Airlines ftw. ? British Airways do a good deal once in a blue moon, but their prices are normally astronomical during the period of the year that I can travel. Gulf Air are decent, too. Good service, punctual, and clean. Air India planes feel like they're on the verge of falling to pieces mid air.

That is probably due to the all the over weight desi's and their astronomical amount of luggage they take on with them. lol

I've flown on various airlines to India. From my experience Virgin are the best and have good meal selection. Emrites are not bad either. I flew to India 20 years ago on Gulf airlines.and had stopover in Bahrain. From my memory it was actually quite good. Never flown again with them so not sure what they are like now. Probably have improved. The movie was good back them it was like a big screen. At the front. Now everyone has their own little screens.

Only issue with flying middle Eastern airlines is you don't know where your money is going and to fund what kinda things in Muslim countries. It's best to go on a western airline.

I was interested in buying some property in Punjab. But at the moment no foreigner is allowed to buy unless they get this OCI card. This is suppose to give people of Indian origin all the rights as those that were born there. Such as being able to travel visa free, opening business ect..But it's quite costly I heard and not sure about the limitations.

That sounds good as one thing was put off by is the usual Indian complicated  procedures they normally have for such things.

The life time visa would be good as I travel alot to India. Usually on holidays so would save the hassle of constantly having to get a visa. Might aswell take advantage of this.

Will try to apply soon as may be off their in a few months time. Hopefully the card arrived by then. As not sure how long it takes to process ect.

Mr California sardar ji.  Or should I call you kobe da pyarar chela?

    There's plenty in cricket

    Sachin tendulkar, virat kohli

    Milka Singh in athletics.

Theres also the fact of many brown athletes who do not enter sports due to racism. Or why is there a lack of Asians in football in UK. Many are discouraged due to racism and stereo typing.

Also kobe has rape charges against him that he settled with his millions. Yet chela like you only admire and worship him.

Blacks are accepted by and large due to wearing the cross around their necks, having English names and having a similar white culture to the white man. Are the blackstars people you admire? Ie snoop dog, kanaye west?
