  2. Have a look at the following news in todays London's Evening Standard newspaper.

Routine test reveals white debt collector from Halifax is secret great-great-grandson of last king of the Sikhs

Last updated at 16:37pm on 26.02.08

    Add your view

For more than six decades, Bob Goddard's only link to India was his fondness for a curry.

But after a routine test, he has discovered the subcontinent runs in his blood.

The 64-year-old's rare combination of blood groups has revealed he could be related to the last Sikh royal family, who once owned the Koh-i-noor diamond.

    Scroll down for more ...

Family: Bob Goddard (left) is apparently directly descended from Maharajah Duleep Singh, 'the last king of the Sikhs'

Further research into Mr Goddard's family tree has shown that his great grandfather may have been Prince Freddy, second son of Maharajah Duleep Singh, known as the "last king of the Sikhs".

Mr Goddard, a retired debt recovery officer from Halifax, has been a regular blood donor for years and has the most common type of blood, O-positive.

Tests by the National Blood Service revealed, however, that he also has an unusual combination of minor blood groups, found only in ethnic populations, including Asians and Afro-Caribbeans.

Royal bloodline: From Maharajah Duleep Singh to Bob Goddard

Mr Goddard was unable to explain the discovery until a chance conversation with a cousin gave him the answer.

"I've always been a regular blood donor," he said.

"They check your blood for compatibility with things like transfusions and so they always look at minor blood groupings.

"A doctor telephoned me and told me my blood group was very unusual with factors not seen in white northern Europeans.

"I was subsequently talking to a cousin researching the family tree who told me that there's a bit of a mystery about who our grandfather's parents were."

Mr Goddard said he discovered that his grandfather, Charlie Goddard, who was born in 1888, was the illegitimate son of an unmarried serving maid at Breckles Hall in Norfolk.

"She would never reveal the father's identity, but it was rumoured he was an Indian prince who stayed there," he added.

The story of Mr Goddard's blue bloodline begins with Duleep Singh, who was born in 1838 and proclaimed Maharajah on his fifth birthday.

Unwittingly at the centre of a fierce struggle for control of the Punjab, he lost his kingdom at the age of 11 to the British.

Under the terms of the agreement, he was also forced to surrender ownership of the Sikh religion's most treasured relic, the Koh-i-noor diamond.

One of the world's most famous gems, it was given to Queen Victoria and eventually set in the late Queen Mother's crown.

The Black Prince set up residence in Elveden Hall in Suffolk and in 1864 married the daughter of a German missionary. She bore him three sons and three daughters - none of whom officially had children.

Although Mr Goddard said it was not impossible Duleep Singh is his great-grandfather, the evidence points to his second son Frederick.

Like his father, Freddy was a bachelor and a renowned ladies' man, who lived at Breckles Hall when Charlie was born.

From then on, the Goddard family tree has continued in less colourful fashion.

Mr Goddard was born in Harrow in 1944 and is now a father-of-two.

    The news is available at:

    http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article...ikhs/article.do

Asked about his possible links to Indian royalty, he said: "It's interesting, but it doesn't have a real effect on me."

Amy Lansdown-Nasson, of the National Blood Service, said: "We are delighted to have played a part in uncovering Bob's unusual family history and hope his story will inspire more people to become donors."

Paag / Turban is a key Symbol for sikhs. We all know from history that almost all men used to wear paag in the olden days regarless of religion.

I have been giving it some though and been looking at how the paag has evaluated within the Sikh community/religion.

If we look at certain sects within sikhism they are still going for the traditional style of such as the rounded style. However the general style of paag has changed to more of what we see in Panjab today.

My comments and question here is:

How come the other communities e.g Middle East still have the traditional way of tying the paag where as we as in Sikhs have taken and modified the style of it

Just thinking out loud as to what would have triggered this off!

Went to see a Vaisakhi Concert at Wembley Arena (Not stadium). They were making everyone

    go through the metal detectors.

One of my friends who is AmritDhari Singh was asked to remove his Kirpan and submit it in a secure

area; to which he clearly refused. There were other Singhs who were doing this and going in without

    their kirpan.

He clearly refused; there was a lot of commotion; spoke to the Wembley Senior Staff who refused to allow this; Police were called; who took side of the wembley management. When I pointed out to the Seargent on duty that it seems that they are not aware of Kirpan being an article of faith; we were all marched off the Arena :-(

I will strongly suggest that you call them, and if you do go be prepared to leave the kirpan outside.

I used to get this problem. Things I did

    1. Checked if the router was clashing with the frequency of other devices in the home. E.g Door chime, cordless phones, or any other devices that you may have at home.

    2. The other thing that you need to do is.

Log on to your network router by ensuring that this is plugged in using the cable NOT WIRELESS.

In your router options you will have an option to upgrade the router software. Upgrade your routers

firmware software. That realy worked and fixed the problem for me.

    Hope this helps.

There will be a peaceful protest against the recent arrest of Mr Gurpreet Singh. The arrest was related to the demonstration in southall on 19 th May 2007, There is a high level of grief in the local community as this seems to be politically motivated.

The local community members, Councillors, Sikh Hindu & Muslim Leaders, and high profile businessmen have already condemned this arrest and have offered their support for this protest. This protest will raise the issues of Singh Sabha Gurdwara Management committee using police for there own benefit and mislead the police.

The protest will be held on 22nd Nov 2007, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, outside Southall Police Station, Uxbridge Road, Southall.

You are requested to attend this protest.

While we are on the joke thread....

See below: NOTE - it is only a joke so take it as a joke.

Paddy had been drinking at his local Dublin pub all day and most

of the night celebrating St Patrick's Day.

Mick, the bartender says,"You'll not be drinking anymore tonight

Paddy Paddy replies, "OK Mick, I'll be on my way then."

Paddy spins around on his stool and steps off. He falls flat on face.

Shoite" he says and pulls himself up by the stool and dusts himself

off. He takes a step towards the door and falls flat on his face,"Shoite Shoite!"

He looks to the doorway and thinks to himself that if he can just

    get to

    the

door and some fresh air he'll be fine.

He belly crawls to the door and shimmies up to the door frame. He

sticks his head outside and takes a deep breath of fresh air, feels much better and

takes a step out onto the sidewalk and falls flat on his face. "Bi 'Jesus...

    I'm fockin' focked," he says.

He can see his house just a few doors down, and crawls to the door, hauls

himself up the door frame, opens the door and shimmies inside. He takes a

look up the stairs and says "No fockin' way". He crawls up the

    stairs to his

bedroom door and says "I can make it to the bed." He takes a step

into the room and falls flat on his face. He says "Fock it" and falls into

bed. The next morning, his wife, Jess, comes into the room carrying a cup

of coffee and says, "Get up Paddy. Did you have a bit to drink last

    night?"

Paddy says, "I did Jess. I was fockin' <Edited>. But how'd you

    know?"

"Mick phoned... you left your wheelchair at the pub!"

I was going through the Sundar Gutka yesterday, and found the path of PATI. I searched on Sikhi to the max and saw the meanings of it.

I wanted to check why it is written as it is for all the alphabets of punjabi, purpose how come we dont hear about it in general.....etc. etc.

    Your thoughts/comments are welcome.

Been a member here for a while and have contributed where felt applicable.

With all the attacks on Sikhi going on, e.g DSS, and conversion issues was just reading the board and noticed that there are ads on the side. This particular ad caught my view (see attached).

Mods are normally very quick on blocking unwanted flames, but this is great, just great!

We have had other issues with Sikhism holy pictures being used for peoples own publicity. Upon request these have been removed.

    I suggest the following:

    1. The mods have access to all the posts on this forum. Can they not have a section relating to templates where you can find such sample letters/emails that can be sent to the webmasters. The more emails/responses that we can send the more pressure will be there to act quickly.

    2. This should be the responsiblity of our leaders who are sitting on their FAT A*S doing nothing. Gurudwaras were built with a lot more responsiblity than just doing Path and langar. Over time these responsibilities have diminished and no one has picked these up. This is a contributing factor to our state today.

A letter to be written from an existing authority to SGPC, and the Akal Takhat highlighting the use of sikh symbols for peoples own use. I am sure they are aware of it. There should be a team responsible centrally to keep an eye out on this. And of course this way parchar will automatically happen.

  15. Waheguru ji ka khalsa

    Waheguru ji ki Fateh !

I have just been listening to an album called Punjab Lounge. It is mainly lounge music mixed in a chill out mood style. All was fine till I came to track 8. It is called Mooli but it is actually a remix of Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji Srinagar Vale's shabad.

"Dar Mande thande darbar tuj bin surat kare ko meri.

Khol Kapat Gur Maliya Nanak Har Sangat Meet"

It is not mixed with any other lyrics and is on its own. I was quite shocked to hear this.

    Now some questions/comments/concers

    1. Question Do the mixer DJ needs to get permission from the holding record company in this I think it is T-Series.

If yes, then does the singer/artisist/ragi has an understanding of this.

The point I am trying to make is that has someone just remixed it or really gone to check with the holding company (In this case Prob T-Series).

    2. Concern: If this is being remixed in such a way, what is stopping from this CD being played in clubs/bars and other places.

    3. Comment: As much as I appreicate that kirtan should be done all over and not being narrow minded about its remix. It still raises a question of the value of Gurbani being used in such a way

    Apprecaite sensible comments pls.

    Thanks

    It should do.

Make sure that you call Orange and ask them to ensure that you have roaming profile on. When you get to india, if your network selection is automatic then it will pick up the available networks automatically; Else you can choose manually.

Also ensure that you put a password on your voicemail so you can access remotely, as most networks in India wont support your voicemail.

    Hope this helps

    Firstly

Best Wishes to you on Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Gurpura.

    Now My 2 pence:

    1. Rather than having a picture of our Guru's why cant they have a picture that just says Eik OnKaar, or Vaheguru. I am trying to say is that why not have a picture of Shabad rather than of our Guru's.

    2. Sikhism is highly influenced by Hinduism in India. Uneducated muppets like me try to blend in. We need to be strong (esp me) and need to know the true values of Sikhism. Faith, belief and habits are going to vary from person to person hence we are called individuals.

Having said all this there are picutres of Guru Ji's in my house too.

It is certianly not a good news that this has turned out to be a lie.

At times when on one hand Gursiks are using all that they can to promote sikhi such incidents do not really help.

On the other hand what has been done has been done. We can not rewind the time back. But what has been learnt from this.

We (inlcuding me) all have a tendency to force into runnings before we discuss the situation. Understood that this "ACT" was done. But before the protest and all the ho-ha was done, did anyone organising the protest spoke to the "so called victim" or his family to get a first hand story. Did the organisers of taking this to media (including their local Gurudwara) really took on a responsibility of doing their home work before going out; knowing that such incidents are quite common. I dont know but just asking common sense questions.

The point that I am trying to make is lack of organistaional skills in ME(our community), and time after time we jump into these things. Remeber the incident of a sikh boy gettting beaten up by some somalis in Southall a few earlier this year. And there are other incidents. There is a lot of noise and then nothing.

We all need to put on our thinking TURBANS on and start to lessen our fist thought. Also follow up; no body bothers to follow theses issues up until they come up again.

Hmmmmmm the shabad ringing in my head right now "Galin Jog Na Hoyi......" and as I am living in the west "God helps those who help themselves".

    Hope you get my drift.
