kabeer pardaysee kai ghaaghrai chahu dis laagee aag.

Kabeer, the robe of the stranger-soul has caught fire on all four sides.

khinthaa jal ko-ilaa bha-ee taagay aaNch na laag.

The cloth of the body has been burnt and reduced to charcoal, but the fire did not touch the thread of the soul.

    ਪਰਦੇਸੀ = stranger; ਘਾਘਰੈ = robe; ਚਹੁ = four; ਆਗਿ = fire; ਖਿੰਥਾ = quilt; ਜਲਿ = burnt; ਕੋਇਲਾ = charcoal; ਤਾਗੇ = thread; ਨ ਲਾਗ = not touch; ਆਂਚ = heat, flame.

In India, Yogis and other holy men would travel to different villages wearing ragged clothes, giving the appearance that they had forsaken various worldly pleasures. (This metaphor comes in the next Salok as well, so I thought I should mention it here.)

Like this, Bhagat Kabeer Ji uses the image of a foreigner or stranger to describe our human life. A traveller goes from village to village, staying at each for a short period of time. In the same way, we visit this world in human form, but we forget that eventually we'll have to leave everything behind and move on. Whilst we visit this village we are engulfed by the fire of maya which surrounds us. Immoral deeds and distractions pollute and eat away at our minds. We lose our sense of duty and honour, instead wandering from pleasure to pleasure like animals.

    _1480302_village300.jpg

Yet we are still never satisfied. If you put a large trough of food in front of a pig it will eat its fill and then sleep contendedly. If you proceed to question the pig about how it feels, whether it wants anything more etc, you'll only be answered by the sound of peaceful snores. If you put a plate of food in front of a human and let it eat its fill, will all it's desires be satisfied? Definately not. There will always be something else to complain about, and deep down the soul will always be thirsty.

    pig_sleeping.jpg

The fire of maya will try to consume our bodies and minds continually, the same way that our flesh is reduced to charcoal and dust when we are cremated. Bhagat Kabeer Ji is telling that if we remain true to Akaal Purakh, even a thread of our soul will not be harmed. Maharaj has the power to make one small thread as strong as iron, and with His mercy our souls and minds can also remain this strong, even whilst being surrounded on all sides by manmat.

kabeer log ke nindai bapurhaa jih man naahee gi-aan.

Kabeer, how can the wretched people slander me? They have no wisdom or intelligence.

raam kabeeraa rav rahay avar tajay sabh kaam.

Kabeer continues to dwell upon the Lord's Name; I have abandoned all other affairs.

    ਲੋਗੁ = people; ਨਿੰਦੈ = slander; ਗਿਆਨੁ = wisdom; ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ = continue to dwell; ਅਵਰ = other; ਤਜੇ = leave; ਕਾਮ = affairs, work.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji simply states the Truth - that worshipping Akaal Purakh is the way forward, regardless of other people's opinions. Most of us want easy answers to our questions. When people discuss their different religions, the purpose is hardly ever to engage in the discussion purely because it will make us think more about God. Often it's just because different people want the others to conform to their beliefs. Sometimes no matter how hard we try, other people just won't accept that a certain level of faith or obedience is required to follow the path of Gursikhi. People might scorn us for even trying to believing that becoming a true Gursikh is possible. But we know deep down what the Truth is.

Also, we should never use Gurbani as a stick to beat people with.

    sggs_002.jpg

Instead of totally condemning them, pray for the ones who slander the Gurmukhs. Their existence might be so blind and pointless, maybe they have no notion of the Truth. People might deny the existence of God, and will always scorn those who have faith in prayer. But why should this bother us? It will only ever bother us if we don't have proper faith. Comments from other people can serve as a test of our faith in Maharaj - will we waver, or will we remain steadfast and true to our Guru?

    251566471_4dba861c55_m.jpg

Bhagat Kabeer Ji says that no matter how many people slander him, he will never forget his beloved Akaal Purakh. We have to realise that other things like education and family are important, but that our primary purpose is to serve God. Going to university, school or work will never do true good on their own. In the long run it's worthless unless we try to integrate Gurbani or Bhagti into every second of our lives. And we can't do anything without first asking Maharaj to give us strength to achieve it.

kabeer mai jaani-o parhibo bhalo parhibay si-o bhal jog.

Kabeer, at first, I thought learning was good; then I thought Yoga was better.

bhagat na chhaada-o raam kee bhaavai ninda-o log.

I shall never abandon devotional worship of the Lord, even though people may slander me.

    ਜਾਨਿਓ = thought; ਪੜਿਬੋ = reading; ਭਲ = good; ਜੋਗੁ = yoga; ਭਗਤਿ = meditation; ਨ ਛਾਡਉ = don't leave; ਭਾਵੈ = even if; ਨਿੰਦਉ = slander; ਲੋਗੁ = people.

When Bhagat Kabeer Ji lived in the city of Benares he saw many Brahmins and other learned men. The city was holy in the eyes of the Hindus. Bhagat Ji watched these holy men and thought that learning the scriptures would be beneficial. Many would adopt strange postures in an effort to reach God through yoga.

    sadhu1.jpg

But Bhagat Ji saw that they argued uselessly about their scriptures and didn't take real meaning from them. He saw that if reading spiritual books and scrolls would lead only to contraversial debates, then it's better to remain a humble devotee of Akaal Purakh instead. It's something we often forget ourselves. We read a few shabads here and there - skimming over the English translations - and think we know it all. We preach to others instead of encouraging them. We're so keen to force our viewpoint upon others over 'contraversial' topics because we're blinded by our ego. The whole essence of Gursikhi lies in Gurbani, but we're more interested in having short-term fun which result in temporary thrills or hormone-rushes etc. We forget our roots so easily, but one day we'll realise that if we want to get anywhere then we need to make the effort to sit down and actually recognise what Maharaj is telling us.

    gutka.jpg

(This reminds me of something I saw on http://khalsa4ever.blogspot.com/ today:

    'Regarding our Guru Granth Sahib:

Many say that it is imperative that we learn Gurmukhi, and ONLY Gurmukhi for understanding Gurbani. While it may be true that the essence of what our Guru said is best understood in Gurmukhi, it is important to consider the meaning of language.

Look at the spread of Christianity for example. I hardly see anyone fluently conversing in Latin, but rather English, Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese, ...

The Gurus went from place to place preaching in the language of the place they went. Our Gurus not only wrote in Punjabi, but Sanskrit, Persian, and others. In that respect, as our 11th Guru, wouldn't Guru Granth Sahib also preach to us in the language that the people of the place speak?

    Just a thought.' )

Anyway, Bhagat Kabeer Ji is telling us that usually people will try to mock anyone who follows the path to God. It's strange that if we talk to God then we're praying, but if God talks to us, then we're mad. We have to decide what is best for us. Do we want to take action now? Or do we want to hope that there will be time later on in life to take action? Do we continue following our own minds and other people's opinions, or do we swallow our pride place our trust in something bigger? It's not something many of us ever truly manage. There's no point in uselessly repeating different scriptures like parrots, even though we might look fantastic to people on the outside.

    parrots.jpg

There's no point in calling ourselves Sikhs and expecting to reach Sachkhand, the same way some expect a one-way ticket to Paradise through the label 'Muslim'. We have to EARN our tickets. Otherwise we can't exactly blame people for slandering us.

kabeer ih chaytaavnee mat sahsaa reh jaa-ay.

Kabeer, let me remind you of this. Do not be skeptical or cynical.

Those pleasures which you enjoyed so much in the past - now you must eat their fruits.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji is reinforcing the fact which we forget almost every second of our lives - that the so-called pleasures of this world are temporary and can have disastrous consquences for us later on.

I think the part in the translation above which says "Do not be sceptical or cynical" means "do not doubt the truth" in relation to the following line. Although it's nice not to be sceptical (of Maharaj's power) and cynical about life in general. :) We forget that Akaal Purakh is capable of turning ants into kings and kings into ants - and doubt Him constantly. (I suppose this makes it nicer when He proves us wrong, as He always does in the end, but still we don't get the hint.)

    bk_byzantine_nani_rar_mb.gif

The above is what you get if you type 'ant king' into Google.

Anywhoo, we should remember that Google is also temporary and will not amuse us forever.

Apparently in the olden days when you shopped at a store, the shopkeeper would sometimes throw in an extra sweet or two for good will (or to manipulate your tastebuds into revisiting that particular shop). The sweets were of little value to the shopkeeper, but were taken readily by the customer.

    mithai.jpg

Bhagat Kabeer Ji says that we shouldn't be fooled by Maya trying to trick us into fulfilling our useless desires. It will only make us want more and more, and ultimately bears no true fruit. This doesn't mean we should live our lives as hermits - but to live simply and use the little knowledge given to us by Maharaj to meet our needs adequately. We need to realise that eventually we have to pay for the bad things we knowingly do, even if it feels good at the time we do them. Random examples - flirting, chugali, vandalism.

They key is to acknowledge this and take positive action. We need to believe that Maharaj is the only one who can save us and ask Him sincerely for help. Alternatively, we can take the glum outlook on things and accept that eventually we will be 'punished' or 'beaten up by the jamdoots', whilst continuing to act like idiots.

'Those pleasures which you enjoyed so much in the past - now you must eat their fruits.' And they don't taste good people.

ko hai larikaa baych-ee larikee baychai ko-ay.

Kabeer, how rare are those who sell their son and sell their daughter.

saajhaa karai kabeer si-o har sang banaj karay-i.

and, entering into partnership with Kabeer, deal with the Lord.

    ਲਰਿਕਾ ਬੇਚਈ = son, daughter; ਬੇਚੈ = sell, ਸਾਝਾ = partnership; ਸੰਗਿ = with, near; ਬਨਜੁ = trade, deal.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji has already mentioned burning the 5 vices ('sons'), but here he mentions daughters too. These are probably referring to things like jealousy, expectations and ambition which stem from the panj chor, especially ego. (This is in no way suggesting that sons are more important that daughters.)

If we take this Salok more literally, Bhagat Ji might be talking about removing attachment for family. I doubt it though, because although this is a great idea, there's no need to actually burn our children voluntarily to prove it to Maharaj.

    cauldron.gif

Sometimes if you try suggesting that things like kaam and anger can be controlled, people will think the idea ridiculous. We say "we can't help it" or "we're only human", building walls for ourselves to hide behind so that we can avoid facing our faults. A fundamental step is accepting that life does not revolve around us, and that there is something bigger out there.

    moonrise-thumb.jpg

Gradually we'd begin to truly realise that anything is possible, because there is only Akaal Purakh and He blesses the people who can do wonderful things and achieve wonderful states of mind. We might believe it in theory, but whether we really do in our heart of hearts is a different matter. When it comes to the crunch, will we truly have faith?

    2005-11-13-BabaDeepSingh_line.jpg

Bhagat Kabeer Ji says that so few people realise the ultimate Truth. Find those people, or at least those who are heading in the right direction, and learn from them. We need to realise that we are wasting time trotting around as if everything is hunkydory. Speak to those people who have cancer and see how much they appreciate the time they have left with the things/people that are most important to them. The true business is that one in which we fulfil the promise we made when we were unborn - to meditate on Maharaj.

On a side note, today I read that the Ganges is now too dirty for ritual bathing. In the words of a guy who runs a Hindu Monastery in Varanasi, "The pilgrims comes to wash away their sins. After a dip here, they may carry skin diseases with them."

Bhai Amolak Singh from Australia sung the shabad "Je Lorai Sadha Sukh Bhaee" in USA some time between 2000 and 2005. It was his kind-of-raag-mixed-with-AKJ-style kirtan.

I downloaded it from somewhere a long time ago, but now I can't find it on keertan.net/ikirtan.com/akj.org.

I have a feeling he might have sung it in either New Jersey or New York.. or somewhere..

if anyone has it, then please either PM me or post the download-link.

kabeer aisaa ko-ee na janmi-o apnai ghar laavai aag.

Kabeer, there is no one born, who burns his own home,

paaNcha-o larikaa jaar kai rahai raam liv laag.

and burning his five sons, remains lovingly attuned to the Lord.

    ਘਰਿ = house, ਆਗਿ = fire, ਪਾਂਚਉ ਲਰਿਕਾ = five sons (vices), ਜਾਰਿ ਕੈ = burning whom (i think), ਲਿਵ = adoration.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji says that there are very few people in the world who are indifferent to worldly pleasures. The part about burning the home can either mean having no attachment to the body, or having no attachment to our houses and homely luxuries. Either way, this is a state of mind which most of us can't comprehend. We think of our bodies as the one thing which defines us; through our bodies and minds come our actions, which lead other people to formulate different opinions of us. Bhagat Ji says that the true disciple of Maharaj will realise that all this is just an outer-shell which doesn't belong to us.

We see people on TV who have lost everything due to hurricanes or other natural 'disasters', and we feel sorry for them. But can we truly comprehend what they're going through? In a few minutes, the homes which have protected them for years are demolished. The worries set in; where will they stay, how will they find money, how will they feed their children? For them, their lives have been shattered and for those of us who have no notion of Maharaj's Hukam, all that remains is negativity.

    Devastation-thumb.jpg

Bhagat Kabeer Ji goes on to say that few people in the world have successfully managed to control and destroy the five vices - lust, anger, greed, pride and attachment - that are within them. A true disciple of Maharaj has had their ego overcome through humility and self-sacrifice, surrendering themselves completely to the Will of Akaal Purakh. That Gurmukh will be absorbed in the love of Maharaj, and will know nothing else, because there is nothing else.

  9. Its to increase post count.

it's not *always* to increase post count; sometimes it's used to bring a useful/inspirational topic to everyone's attention e.g. if it's old or forgotten about.

if bump means "bump up MY post", then really we should make a new word for bumping up threads written by OTHER people. but 'bump' has a nice ring to it.

what's the point in increasing post count anyway? to get more wee blue boxes under your username? mmm sounds like a big motivation grin.gif .

    salok mehlaa 1.

naa sat dukhee-aa naa sat sukhee-aa naa sat paanee jant fireh.

Guru Ji is listing the things people do to try and realise the Truth. Some undergo physical pain, whilst other revel in wordly pleasures and vices. I'm not sure about the water reference - something about oceanic beings not realising the Truth? Perhaps someone could elaborate.

naa sat moond mudaa-ee kaysee naa sat parhi-aa days fireh.

People shave their heads in many cultures, at birth or otherwise thinking it to be of spiritual significance. No-one ever realised the Truth in this way. Studying philosophy or other such books will not give us True understanding. Nor will travelling to far away places, expecting salvation to suddenly arrive out of the blue as a result.

    book_stack.jpg

naa sat rukhee birkhee pathar aap tachhaaveh dukh saheh.

We can't realise Maharaj by dwelling in jungles or forests, by placing our faith in stones (might be idols) or harming our bodies. Many sit in awkward postures, mutilating their bodies and expecting spiritual advancement.

    156054781_dd3d3a2dfe_m.jpg

naa sat hastee baDhay sangal naa sat gaa-ee ghaahu chareh.

Truth is not attained by tieing up our bodies just like elephants are used (in war etc) and are bound in ropes and chains. Truth cannot be attained by constantly eating, as cows continually chew on and digest grass.

    JSC%200105%20Blue-eyed%20Grass%202.JPG

jis hath siDh dayvai jay so-ee jis no day-ay tis aa-ay milai.

Akaal Purakh is the only One who can bestow the Truth on those who meditate lovingly on Naam. It is by His grace and blessing that we receive True understanding.

naanak taa ka-o milai vadaa-ee jis ghat bheetar sabad ravai.

Guru Ji tells that above mentioned practices are useless if you desire to know the Truth. Only those people are fortunately blessed, who instil value and love for Gurbani in their hearts.

    sggs_002.jpg

sabh ghat mayray ha-o sabhnaa andar jisahi khu-aa-ee tis ka-un kahai.

All of us have been created by Maharaj, and Maharaj dwells in all our hearts. But what is the use in trying to explain this to someone who has been misled by Akaal Purakh Himself? In the bigger picture He controls everything, and some of us are not destined to understand this. Ultimately, Maharaj has all the power, we have nothing and cannot become more powerful than Him. At the end of the day, His Will dictates who will understand and who won't.

jisahi dikhaalaa vaatrhee tiseh bhulaavai ka-un.

At the same time, if someone has been blessed by their Guru then no-one apart from Maharaj can ever mislead them or tie them back down to the wrong path. No-one themself has the power to attack a Gurmukh. Doubts do not afflict that person, even when their faith is tested.

    bundy%20woodland%20path.jpg

jisahi bhulaa-ee panDh sir tiseh dikhaavai ka-un.

It is very hard to lead a person onto the Truth Path of spirituality if they are destined for a different path. Essentially all power lies in Maharaj - that power can be channelled through various beings, but in the bigger picture He is pulling all the strings.

aiso achraj daykhi-o kabeer daDh kai bholai birolai neer

    ਅਚਰਜੁ = wonders.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji is talking about the strange things which he sees happening. The shabad is one big metaphor. Instead of doing anything useful (taking advantage of Naam), we are wasting away our lives so much. This is just like trying to churn water and expecting it to wield the same results as if it were cream. Nothing useful is being produced.

    Aquaguard-Water-Splash2.jpg

haree angooree gadhaa charai nit uth haasai heegai marai

We are behaving like donkeys. We feel temporarily happy going about our daily business and stirring up emotional attachment and desire. Then the time for death arrives, and we don't even realise it's significance - many of us will continue to go around the life-cycle in our arrogance.

    240x240g_pub_media_photos_angela_named_pics_donkey_shrek.jpg

    ਮਾਤਾ = intoxicated (matvala), ਭੈਸਾ = male buffalo, ਅੰਮੁਹਾ = uncontrolled, ਕੁਦਿ = runs about, ਚਰੈ = eat, ਰਸਾਤਲਿ = hell.

Humans are acting like a male buffalo who is wild and uncontrollable. We are not obedient, we don't listen to the Truth. We deny it in our anger and pride. We don't understand. We go through life enjoying various pleasures, and eventually end up in pain.

    artwork.jpg

    ਪਰਗਟੁ = manifest/come into being, ਖੇਡ = refers to the weird game which is happening, ਲੇਲੇ = lamb, ਚੂਘੈ = sucks/bites, ਭੇਡ = sheep.

Kabeer Ji says that he's seeing strange things. I don't think the word milk actually appears here - so the metaphor might refer to the sheep eating her lamb. Anyway the point remains the same. The entire situation isn't productive - we're wasting life and the way people are living nowadays indicates that there is no point to it. It's possible that Bhagat Kabeer Ji is describing Maya as the sheep and us as her lamb - we're being eaten away by Maya day after day.

    BigSheep_01.gif

Finally, Bhagat Ji thanks Maharaj for gracing him with some knowledge. The True Path can be realised by meditating on the One Akaal Purakh, and life can be used fruitfully by having the Guru's guidance.

    How To Love Waheguru

Constantly desire to know your beloved Waheguru more fully

Make this your burning passion. Probe too deeply into the personal life of any human and we have to brace ourselves for disappointment. We will inevitably find faults in the person. But we never have to fear discovering a flaw in Waheguru. He is the most wonderful person there is. His character is so beautiful that the more you know him the more you will fall in love with him.

    golden-temple.jpg

Be convinced about Waheguru’s love for you

Above everything else, Waheguru is characterized by love. Even more exciting is the fact that he loves you so very much. The Love Akaal Purakh showers you with every second of every minute of every hour of every day is greater than anything else you have ever experienced. Were you to combine every form of genuine human love, it would only give the vaguest glimpse of the intensity of Waheguru’s love for you.

You may feel deeply hurt because people have let you down, but Waheguru will never disappoint you. Because genuine love is much deeper than mere feelings, you will not always be conscious of an inner feeling that ‘says’ that Waheguru loves you. Our physical senses, intuition and emotions are all highly unreliable when it comes to detecting spiritual reality. Feelings are changeable, but the love of that most beautiful Akaal Purakh is constant.

Your whole relationship with him hinges not on your emotions or your dependability but on the rock-solid honesty of Waheguru. He is the most reliable source of information there is. If he says something, it is true, regardless of temporary and superficial appearances. And even though we may not understand his sweet hukam, and we may question it, we must realise that He loves us so very much, would he ever do anything to hurt us or make us cry. Everything Waheguru gives you in your life is a blessing. Its just people who define what that blessing is. It is all down to individual perceptions.

    Waheguru is good!

We can’t hope to enjoy the heights of intimacy with someone whose integrity we doubt. So if you have any uncertainties about the goodness and sweetness of Akaal Purakh you should look at these doubts of yours and carefully examine them. Everyone of us has doubts, and in the hour of misery we tend to question our beloved Waheguru.

Its not wrong to question him, it just highlights our lack of faith and love in him. Instead of trying to suppress these doubts, we should try to remove them by getting to know that most beautiful Akaal Purakh better. Waheguru’s knowledge and wisdom are so far beyond us that it would be impossible for us to try to find fault with his most beautiful actions.

To know Waheguru better, talk to him. Hes always there waiting to listen to you. He is always with us, by ourside....and the most amazing thing is that he will always be there. When we were little and crawling around on the floor, he was there, picking us up, teaching us how to walk. When we grew a little older, he was there, to wipe our tears everytime we got hurt. Infact even when we get very old he will be the one who holds out hand, so tightly, and reassures us that everything will be ok. He will always be there, even when we leave this world, he will come with us, and be with us.....whatever fate we await in the next life, this beloved, this sweetest guru sahib will come to protect us.

Maharaj is so merciful that he has told us what awaits us in the next life, however, not only has he told us this, he has also given us all the answers we need to pass this ulitmate test. But its interesting how few of us actually listen, because listening doesnt mean using your ears and hearing some words, or using your eyes and seeing something....true listening, is implementing the answers guru sahib blesses us with into our lifes. Guru Sahibs words are so powerful they pierce stones and make them melt, but have we sunk so low, that even our guru sahibs words cant melt our stonelike hearts??

Imagine the paaps we must have comitted to be in such a state that, we dont seem to believe our guru ji's most beautiful words. It all comes down to a lack of faith. I wonder what would be required to wake us up. Its true when they say, the hardships we have...when the weight of the world, is put on our back, we tend to kneel down, being slowly crushed, but that is when, we dont question maharaj, because when we are in our hour of misery after seeking all doors, and recieving no answer, then we look to the door of the king of kings.

Actually im talking rubbish, there is no such door, guru sahibs house is unlike anyone else's. Guru Sahibs house is not a place enclosed within four walls, having a roof over it, and a floor, and a door or window. Guru Sahibs house, is limitless, there is no need for doors or roofs or walls as anyone is welcome to come. Despite this, we would rather go to otherpeople's house and knock on their doors and beg for help.

    Trust him

Know that you are in Waheguru's strong, capable hands. Guru Sahib longs to help you, but it’s up to you whether you let him. ‘Leave your worries with him’. Faith is knowing that Guru Ji is working out the perfect solution. It is believing that Waheguru not only can do a certain thing, but that he will do it for you. Trust (or faith) is one of the most crucial things in your ever-growing relationship with Akaal Purakh.

At the moment its the five evils which are holding us back from trusting our beloved Guru Sahib. We are in love with these five evils, and we tend to go to the houses of, 'greed', 'pride', 'lust', 'anger' and 'attachment'. We fall in love with these other houses and doors, but we dont understand, we do not heed the advise of our beloved father and mother, satguru sri guru nanak dev ji maharaj, who tells us that these other houses are poison and will slowly put a noose around our necks.

Don’t settle for a half-hearted love affair with Guru Ji

If for sake of Satguru Ji, you would be willing to lose all your possessions, suffer pain, and even die then you have fallen in love with waheguru. Alot of the times, people use the word, 'love', but dont really understand what 'love' is. What we hold dearest sets the ceiling on how far we can go in life. If we let go of lesser things – such as fear, choosing an easy life and slavery to material things – we can soar with Waheguru.
