  1. When daas was blessed with amrit I remember panj saying its ok, just dont eat anything until you are wearing ur kirpan again and do ardas to maharaj for forgiveness saying that there was nothing you can do.

they cant make you take your turban off, but i suppose if they want to search u u have to agree, just make sure its in the most respectufl way like going into a private room ,etc.

  2. polygamy was never an issue in the Sikh Panth, it only became an issue when the brits took over and introduced their own values, leading to people thinking that polygamy was sinful. They tried to same thing in African countries they took over but were met with more resistance, than they did in India.

Whats more surprising is that this is not sanctioned in the Bible either. The early christians acording to the bible practised polygamy, and the Mormon Church in USA still to today. Polygamy is just weird more than anything to us, because we have for several generations been brought up thinking a person can only ever have one spouse.

There is no doubt that Dhan Dashmesh pita had more than one mahal and this should not be questioned at all, however to say in that Sikhs in general had no problem with polygamy is incorrect. What Guru does is one thing what Sikhs can do is another, marriage for Sikhs is only one spouse at a time.

  3. We have it pretty good here in England for these kind of issues so it may be a good idea to look at what British Sikhs did in the 60s/70s, eg.

the case of Mandla v Dowell-Lee (schoolboy fighting for right to wear a dastar in school) which recognises Sikhs as a seperate ethnic group due to the special rights we require as a result of our unique customs and needs.

There was also the campaign to allow Sikhs to ride motorcycles without helmets which resulted in an exemption for Sikhs under the relevant legislation.

  4. ***POST ON BEHALF OF A FRIEND****

A Singh is planning on making an animation on the events of 1984 to inform and educate the masses. The animation will be freely available to all.

It will cover the assassination of Indira Gandhi and will include speeches of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale (with subtitles). The creator is very concerned that he does not put anything incorrect into the programme so the sangat's input is needed.

This thread is for anyone to make any suggestions regarding what should be included in the script, from start to finish. So please post any ideas to help towards general awareness of 1984.

    Thanks

  5. Dumaala is 2 dastaars ineffect a smaller kesi type underneath with a larger dastaar tied on top...Theres no point carrying shaastar if you dont have shastar abhiyaas...learn how to defend yourself..starting at hands free combat techniques then move onto weaponry.

Im not talking about learning, the waste of time gatka..spin a stick around circus act either...I mean learn a proper art which is street effective... like Kali,Eskrima, Panatukan, Krav Maga etc etc...Shastar Vidiya in it's original form would be the best as taught by Niddar Singh Nihang ...but he is UK based..he teaches specifics like how to protect your dharee if it's grabbed, and also mentions that dumallas tied by nihangs are specifically tied to protect the head from minor blows, etc..Nobody else currently teaches or appears to have full knowledge of the original Shastar Vidiya system...

Would it be possible to elaborate on that point in bold just a little bit?

  6. We are not here to help Guru Ji, Guru Ji is here to help us, any thing which stops us getting this help from Guru Sahib is wrong, therefore stopping people from entering Guru Ji's darbar just because the only way they could sit is on a chair would be very wrong.

I think a lot of issues would be resolved if we saw Guru Sahib as living SatGuru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. If Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj is holding a darbar seated on a takht and a disabled individual longs to see Maharaj will he throw them out because they cannot sit on the floor? To insinuate this is more of an insult than anything else.

Lets not make things mystical, we sit on the floor to acknowledge Guru Sahib is higher than all of us, humility, so that there are no specially reserved places for anyone and to show no one in sangat is higher or lower than anyone else.

Lets really ask ourselves if someone sitting on a chair because they absolutely cannot sit on the floor is in violation of any of these things.

    NEANDERTHAL Hunter, gatherer, vegetarian masterchef?

Neanderthals cooked and ate plants and vegetables, a new study of Neanderthal remains reveals.

Researchers in the US have found grains of cooked plant material in their teeth.

The study is the first to confirm that the Neanderthal diet was not confined to meat and was more sophisticated than previously thought.

The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The popular image of Neanderthals as great meat eaters is one that has up until now been backed by some circumstantial evidence. Chemical analysis of their bones suggested they ate little or no vegetables.

This perceived reliance on meat had been put forward by some as one of the reasons these humans become extinct as large animals such as mammoths declined due to an Ice Age.

But a new analysis of Neanderthal remains from across the world has found direct evidence that contradicts the chemical studies. Researchers found fossilised grains of vegetable material in their teeth and some of it was cooked.

Although pollen grains have been found before on Neanderthal sites and some in hearths, it is only now there is clear evidence that plant food was actually eaten by these people.

    “Start Quote

We have found pollen grains in Neanderthal sites before but you never know whether they were eating the plant or sleeping on them or what”

End Quote Professor Alison Brooks George Washington University

Professor Alison Brooks, from George Washington University, told BBC News: "We have found pollen grains in Neanderthal sites before but you never know whether they were eating the plant or sleeping on them or what.

"But here we have a case where a little bit of the plant is in the mouth so we know that the Neanderthals were consuming the food."

    More like us

One question raised by the study is why the chemical studies on Neanderthal bones have been wide of the mark. According to Professor Brooks, the tests were measuring proteins levels, which the researchers assumed came from meat.

"We've tended to assume that if you have a very high value for protein in the diet that must come from meat. But... it's possible that some of the protein in their diet was coming from plants," she said.

This study is the latest to suggest that, far from being brutish savages, Neanderthals were more like us than we previously thought.

  9. I know that personally I couldn't wait to go to dastaar from patka. I used to see singhs in dummalle and wanted a dastaar just like theirs. The key to this is having young role models for kids to look up to, they will naturally want to imitate them.
