  3. Two schools to share former Wolverhampton Tarmac site The mystery surrounding the location of a new free school in Wolverhampton has been solved - as it emerged two schools are to share the site of the former Tarmac premises in Millfields Road. The Wolverhampton Vocational Training Centre (WVTC) and The British Sikh School will both occupy the 29-acre plot in Ettingshall from September 2016. Last week, WVTC bosses said the school will open later this year at the former Timken Training premises in Upper Villiers Street, Blakenhall. But now they have confirmed the move will only be a temporary measure, with the school set to relocate to Ettingshall on a permanent basis after its first year in operation. The Central Learning Partnership Trust, which runs the WVTC, has confirmed it has entered into an official funding agreement with the DfE to allow the school to open. Meanwhile, The British Sikh School will function from a temporary home at the former Parkfield High School on Wolverhampton Road East from September, before also moving to Millfields Road next year. WVTC principal, Ben Gamble, said: Its really exciting to be able to confirm our new permanent home in Ettingshall, which will provide an excellent educational resource. We are also looking forward to working closely with our new neighbours, The British Sikh School. Over the next 18 months, the former Tarmac building will be extended and refurbished, with new classrooms created to allow the planned influx of up to 150 students across both schools. A new sports hall and playing fields will also be constructed. The schools say they plan to share resources once the site is up and running. Raminder Vig, principal of The British Sikh School, confirmed that the DfE had entered into a funding agreement with The Khalsa Academies Trust, which is behind the school. He added: "Im delighted that The British Sikh School will be located at the Tarmac site in its second year of opening. "Over the last few month weve recruited excellent teaching staff for all national curriculum subjects and acquisition of the Tarmac site means that we will also have a school building with state of the art facilities." Wolverhampton South East MP Pat McFadden, said he was pleased the future of the Tarmac site had been clarified. He said: "The Tarmac name has been associated with Bilston and Wolverhampton for many years as part of our industrial heritage. "Now it will no longer be a headquarters for the firm, there has understandably been interest in what would happen with the site. "There has been some confusion over the past week or so, but at least now we know the building is to have a productive use in the future." 9. Sikh Youth Symposium Sikh Youth Alliance of North America Published on Mar 9, 2015 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3cmfF4tRit4 Delving into Sikh literature has long been the avenue with which Sikhs augment their knowledge and understanding of Sikh principles and history. Often used as an adjunct to the study of Gurbani, reading various works on history, philosophy and principles has allowed Sikhs to connect with and gain a greater understanding of the Guru. SYANA's Sikh youth symposium strives to foster this dedication and passion to learning amongst our Sikh youth. Open to all youth ages 6-22, the symposium offers an opportunity for Sikh youth to engage with Sikh literature, spend time with their families discussing various topics and then present their new found knowledge in the setting of their local sangats. Those who are successful in securing first place at their local chapters are advanced to a regional event where the winners are then presented at the annual International gathering. While public speaking and a friendly spirit of competition are also critical components of the Symposium, the greatest success is in targeting Sikh youth to become passionate about self-learning. Those who participate in this event will invariably walk away with greater knowledge, a deeper understanding and hopefully a thirst to continue learning about our great heritage.

Two volunteer nurses have so far signed up for the free clinic in the heart of the Kuala Lumpur town powered by a group of Sikh medical personnel. We are okay with doctors at the moment, but we desperately need more nurses, Dr Rupinder Singh, one of the vounteer doctors at the clinic, told Asia Samachar. Nurses play an important role. The clinic, open on Sundays from April 4 onwards, is located at Wisma Tatt Khalsa, a multipurpose complex under Gurdwara Sahib Tatt Khalsa Diwan, at Jalan Raja Along. Operating hours are from 8am-12noon and 2pm-6pm. A project under Naam Association Malaysia (Pertubuhan Kebajikan Naam Malaysia), the clinic has attracted some 20 doctors who will take turns to run the clinic open to people of all races and religions. Dr Rupinder and his team were met at the Hola Mahalla games organised by the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday (15 Mar 2015). The medical personnel, bearing the Naam Medic attire, provided medical assistance during the futsal and badminton games. 17. Panel set up to resolve calendar row Perneet Singh Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 9 Though the Akal Takht today constituted a committee to resolve the Nanakshahi Calendar row, confusion now prevails over the calendar for the Sikh New Year starting March 14. The highest temporal seat of the Sikhs has come out with a vague direction for the SGPC in this regard. Following a meeting of the Sikh high priests here today, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said, “We have constituted a committee to put an end to the confusion persisting over the calendar issue and unite the community. The committee can submit its recommendations, based on Gurbani and historic sources, to Akal Takht by mid-December. These will be deliberated upon by the high priests before taking the final decision.” The committee comprises Pal Singh Purewal, architect of the original Nanakshahi Calendar, Dr GS Lamba from the US, Dr Anurag Singh from Ludhiana and Col Surjeet Singh Nishan. Besides, there will be two representatives each of the SGPC and Sant Samaj. The committee will also have one representative each from Takht Sri Harmandar Sahib, Patna, Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded; DSGMC, Nihang organisations, Nirmal Bhekh Sect, one each from countries like the US, Canada, Australia, England and Europe. He said these bodies and Takhts should send in the names of their nominees to Akal Takht within a week. Incidentally, while the Akal Takht took the initiative to end the chaos over the calendar row, it ended up creating yet another confusion over the calendar for the Sikh New Year, which starts March 14. The Akal Takht Jathedar said, “The SGPC should publish the calendar for the New Year (Nanakshahi 547) as per Gurbani and historic sources.” When asked to clarify, he said it was for the SGPC to look into the matter and take a decision. Till now the Sikh community had been following the amended Nanakshahi Calendar to observe its events. Interestingly, when contacted, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said he was unaware of the matter and could only comment after getting a clear picture on the issue from the Akal Takht Jathedar. The SGPC is yet to publish the New Year’s calendar due to the row surrounding it and now it only has four days left to publish it as the New Year starts on March 14. Sikh intellectuals have hit out at the Sikh clergy for adding to the confusion over the calendar issue through its ambiguous order on the New Year’s calendar. 23. UK Sikh body says no to help from Indian outfits for general elections Yudhvir Rana,TNN Mar 8, 2015, 03.22AM IST AMRITSAR: Indian Sikh organizations' announcement to motivate and extend support to community members to participate in the UK general elections has not impressed the Sikh Federation, UK. The UK Sikh body - which has for the first time launched a Sikh manifesto targeting 50 key seats to 'shape elections' - has advised Indian Sikh bodies to stay out of Britain's polls and set their house in order first. Sikh Federation, UK general secretary and former mayor of Gravesham Narinderjit Singh on Saturday said: "They (Indian Sikh bodies) are simply opportunists and don't have a clue about the UK elections. You need to plan years in advance to get Sikh candidates selected by parties and then into winnable constituencies." A few days ago, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and All India Sikh Students Federation (Peermohammad) had announced to send their delegations to the UK to extend support and motivate Sikh leaders to increase their participation in politics and be a stronger voice in the House of Commons to resolve issues faced by community especially of their identity. Narinderjit said: "This is not Indian style elections. Sikhs leaders from India should read the Sikh Manifesto, learn something and not waste time and money of the Delhi Sangat by sending delegations to the UK." Principal adviser to Sikh Federation Dabinderjit Singh said: "DSGMC and AISSF should sort out things in India and keep out of the UK polls." He said Sikhs in the UK had shown that they were much more capable than their counterparts in India in securing their rights. He questioned: "Why do they not launch a massive campaign to address the Article 25 of the Indian Constitution?" Chair of the Sikh Federation, UK Amrik Singh said: "Indian Sikh leaders just want to get on to the Sikh manifesto bandwagon on the eve of the British elections as we are getting widespread support and publicity." When contacted, DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK said: "We are not going to interfere in their local electoral system, but we will still motivate the Sikh and Punjabi leadership in UK to make a stronger voice in the legislature."
