  18. Sikh warriors stolen daggers recovered Posted at: Jan 22 2015 2:27AM PK Jaiswar Tribune News Service Amritsar, January 21 Seven daggers of the 18th century Sikh warriors that were stolen from Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama on January 11 at the historic Ram Bagh garden in Amritsar were recovered on Tuesday evening. These daggers were found in Gurdwara Ramsar near the Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh shrine. Eyewitness said an unidentified woman left the daggers covered in a Rumala Sahib. Gurdwara priests spotted the daggers after evening prayers on Tuesday and informed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The daggers were handed over to the police. The relics were stolen from a room on the first floor of the panorama. The room was usually locked and only opened for VIPs. Of the nine daggers kept in a glass enclosure, seven were found missing. Deputy Commissioner of Police Bikram Pal Singh Bhatti said the unidentified woman also left a note along with the daggers which states no insider was involved in the theft. It also states that such artefacts should be displayed in the general gallery instead of the VIP gallery. The woman could not be identified in the absence of CCTV cameras, said Bhatti. He said efforts were on to identify the woman. We are also waiting for the fingerprint report which would provide a clue about the thieves, he said. The police still suspect the role of an insider in the theft. The written note mentioned the words VIP gallery and general gallery, which only an insider can know, said a police officer. Raman Kumar, curator of Mahraja Ranjit Singh Museum, said the authenticity of the daggers would be checked. He said the daggers had ivory handles. 21. Home Office u-turn allows Sikh solicitors to wear Kirpan in detention centres Carolyn Churchill Wednesday 21 January 2015 LAWYERS have welcomed a change to Home Office rules which allow Sikh solicitors to wear a ceremonial dagger when meeting their clients in detention centres. The Law Society of Scotland had raised the issue with officials after one legal adviser was told he would need to remove his Kirpan, one of five symbols of faith carried by Sikhs, when meeting a client. Trainee solicitor Gurpreet Singh Johal, who is with Bilkus & Boyle Solicitors, later discovered that Sikh Ministers were allowed to wear the Kirpan in detention centres. The Home Office has now changed its rules following intervention from the Law Society. Mr Johal said: "Access to a solicitor is a fundamental right for anyone being held in detention centres. "I work with clients from a variety of backgrounds, but it's understandable that in such traumatic circumstances, some people will want legal support from someone who understands their social and cultural context, or can communicate in their own language. "You always wonder whether you should make a fuss, but even outwith my personal situation, I believe that any barriers put in place to ensure safety and security have to be proportionate when it comes to clients being able to access an appropriate solicitor." Neil Stevenson, director of representation and support at the Law Society of Scotland, praised the Home Office decision to update its rules. He said: "We raised this because it seemed unfair to baptised Sikh solicitors who have to undergo robust checks as part of their job. We were delighted to learn that the issue had been addressed through an amended order which came into force in time for the New Year." 25. Sikh wins compensation over prison turban challenge Solicitor barred from visiting client in Belmarsh prison because his turban was held together with pins David Barrett By David Barrett, Home Affairs Correspondent 6:44PM GMT 15 Jan 2015 A Sikh solicitor has won undisclosed compensation after being barred from entering a prison to visit a client because he had pins in his turban. Amrik Bilkhu, a criminal defence solicitor, was told to remove the pins even though he pointed out it would make the religious garment fall apart. He brought a religious discrimination claim against the Ministry of Justice, which has now settled out of court and agreed to pay Mr Bilkhus legal costs. Mr Bilkhu arrived at Belmarsh prison in south-east London to visit a client who was on remand in October 2013. He had previously been allowed into the jail without any problems but on this occasion was refused entry because of the four pins holding together his turban. The solicitor then sued for religious discrimination and a trial was due in the county court in May, before the Ministry of Justice agreed an out of court settlement. Duncan Burtwell, of GT Stewart solicitors, said: The way that Mr Bilkhu was treated in this matter was appalling and it ought never to have been necessary to bring this claim on his behalf. Any legitimate security concerns relating to Mr Bilkhus turban pins could have been more proportionately addressed than by the refusal to admit him to the prison altogether. In any event, Mr Bilkhus attendances at Belmarsh on previous occasions and Belmarshs approval of his turban pins for subsequent legal visits rendered the entire incident ridiculous. Mr Burtwell, who is also a colleague of Mr Bilkhu, said he had suffered indignation and distress at the prison staffs actions. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "We respect individuals' rights to wear religiously appropriate clothing, including hats, turbans and caps. "We do not comment on individual claims."
