  3. This Saturday there's a Special Kirtaan Durbaar at Shepherd's Bush Gurdwara, London! Need a bit of a boost? Rejuvenate yourself at this special kirtaan programme. Including translations in English, amazing kirtaan and a special ardaas for those taking exams this year! From 6.30pm - 9.30pm we will be lucky enough to experience Kirtan sung by some of the most accomplished Kirtanis in this country and from abroad - many of whom will be performing in traditional and soul inspiring Raag.   10. What is "Sikhs In Journalism"? "Sikhs In Journalism" (SIJ) is a new mentoring scheme for students from the Sikh community. The objective of the scheme is to encourage Sikh students to actively explore careers in journalism and print media. Careers to which Sikhs have traditionally not taken to in the UK! Successful applicants to the scheme will: - Attend a series of one-day workshops and field visits through the year. - Research and write a variety of articles inorder to develop their potfolio. - Be given feedback and critique of their articles. - Gain hands on experience of the research and editing process. - Have access to some of the most talented journalists and writers within the industry. The SIJ mentors are some of the most talented in the industry and have worked with or are currently working for companies such as the BBC, FT, Vogue and The Sunday Times.   11. UNITED SIKHS URGENTLY requires volunteers to make a difference in relief efforts in the City of New Orleans (USA). Thousands are expected dead and the entire city of New Orleans is under water, amongst other cities, after Hurricane Katrina hit the south-eastern United States in what is being called one of the worst and most expensive natural disasters in American history. The police, armed guards, and medical professionals are struggling to provide essential services with hundreds of thousands of people homeless, displaced and or injured. UNITED SIKHS has started the GHANAIA Katrina Hurricane Relief project and is working together with US authorities to gather resources and build a team of volunteers, including medical professionals, who will aid the refugees in Louisiana. We need your support, through time, effort and money, to make this project successful.   19. that's quite interesting.. i saw this program on the tv, 2 weeks ago.. and that's what sparked my interest... it showed a sufi muslim teaching twirling... as in he was literally moving round and round on the spot.. one hand pointed in the air and the other towards the ground.. unfortunately i didnt catch the name of the program as i was just flicking through channels when i came across it, whilst eating my Sunday morning prontahs. if Jews do this also, or maybe something different, that is interesting too.

  21. Sufi muslims also carry out 'twirling' - i am not sure about what it is exactly. sher_panjabi - have u encountered any information on this method of 'meditation' in your research about sufi-ism?
  22. a most interesting thread. i was talking to my friend a while back and he said that there was a tape made of an exorcism carried out by Sant Baba Isher Singh (Rare Sahib Vale). does anyone have any information about this?
  23. In 1914, Gurdit Singh, a Sikh entrepreneur based in Singapore, chartered a Japanese ship, the Komagata Maru, to carry Indian immigrants to Canada. On May 23, 1914, the ship arrived in Vancouver Harbour with 376 passengers aboard: 340 Sikhs; 24 Muslims and 12 Hindus. Many of the men on-board were veterans of the British Indian Army and believed that it was their right as British subjects to settle anywhere in the Empire they had fought to defend and expand.
