  1. Sadh Sangat jio, All of us need to work actively in our local areas and ensure such beadbi is not repeated else where. It should be our responsibility to ensure that holding akhand path sahib for funraisers do not become a trend. --------------------- Surrey, BC, Canada (April 6, 2012)–An akhand paat sahib was started this morning at Tamanawis Secondary School here. Against acceptable norms or maryada, the akhand paat is being held in the school gym. Although it seems that a lot of respect has been given for Guru Granth Sahib maharaj jee’s saroop, according to Panthik norms it is still not acceptable to bring Guru Sahib’s pavittar saroop into a school gym where meat is served, dances take place and music with dirty lyrics is played–and most importantly, where alcohol may have been consumed. When a reporter asked why the Akhand Paat Sahib was being organized, the response given was so the school can raise money for Dry Grad. Dry Grad is a function put on for the graduating students of the school for that respective year. At this function, which lasts from anywhere from 6pm to 6am, there is dancing, games, and although it is not allowed many students come drunk and high. The akhand paat sahib is being done to raise money for a function that seems to go against the grain of Sikh principles and ideals. Some Sikhs we spoke with said that this akhand paat should not and cannot happen. A few gurmat oriented Sikhs from the area knew about the akhand paat sahib prior to Friday morning, but they could not prevent the akhand paat sahib from happening. The akhand paat sahib’s bhog will be around 10 am Sunday morning and gursikhs plan on ensuring that respect is upheld throughout the program and then working with the school to try and prevent it in the future. Sikhs are urged to contact the school in a polite manner to make their voices heard, the phone number is +1 http://www.sikh24.co...r-school-dance/ Admin Note: Please read this.
  2. Chandigarh (April 2, 2012)–Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara, who was convicted in the Beant “Singh” assassination case, has responded to claims made by Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana in his letters written from the Patiala jail. Bhai Tara, who is currently at large and is believed to be in Pakistan, is head of Khalistan Tigers Force. He was sentenced by the Punjab and Haryana court, along with Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, Jathedar Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and others for their involvement in the execution of the former Punjab Chief Minister. Along with Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Paramjit Singh Bheora, he made a sensational escape from Chandigarh’s High Security Burial Jail. Bhai Tara is believed to have worked under Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara’s leadership when he was an active member of Babbar Khalsa International. Bhai Dilawar Singh Sacrificed Himself to Punish “Beanta” Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara has stated that during the Beant Singh assassination court hearings, he had glorified the martyrdom of Bhai Dilawar Singh Babbar openly, claiming that Bhai Sahib had sacrificed himself to punish “Beanta,” the former Punjab Chief Minister responsible for genocide of Sikhs in the 1990′s. Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had asked the Babbar Khalsa International to clear its stance on the martydom of Bhai Dilawar Singh. It should be noted that Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara had appealed to the Supreme Court on the basis of “innocence.” To answer Bhai Balwant Singh’s question, Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara stated that “the fact that Bhai Hawara had claimed innocence does not mean that Babbar Khalsa does not consider Bhai Dilawar Singh a shaheed,” according to Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara, “such tactics are employed by lawyers of Singhs for legal defense in court.” Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara stated that it is not wrong for Bhai Hawara to be fighting his case in the Supreme Court. “Perhaps it could be a tactic to keep the Sikh freedom movement alive. But whatever the reason,” stated Bhai Tara, “we need to respect the intentions of our brother [bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara].” Bhai Resham Singh Germany – Worthy of Much Respect Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara also stated that Bhai Resham Singh Babbar is one of the forefathers of the Sikh independence struggle and is worthy of any Sikh’s respect. Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had highlighted some differences with Bhai Resham Singh Babbar, who is currently living in Germany. According to Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara, Bhai Resham Singh is still attached to the freedom struggle and providing respectable supervision to the Khalistan movement. Role of Informants and Differences Amongst Singhs Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara wrote that many times, Governments plant informants (aka “cats”) within so-called guerrilla groups to sabotage the freedom struggle of the oppressed communities. Many times, the existence of cats becomes evident only after damage is already done. The same was done to Bhai Rajoana and Bhai Hawara, who were both arrested because of informants. According to Bhai Tara, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana was arrested after a tip off by “Ravinder Singh Ravi,” while Bhai Hawara was caught by one “Rana.” Both of these persons were deployed as informants by the Punjab Police to keep an eye on the activities of Singhs. Their original role in the freedom movement only became known after the arrest of Bhai Rajoana and Bhai Hawara. In his note, Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara relayed to Bhai Rajoana that “even though both of them are not together today, their aim of Sikh Freedom is still the same. “ Bhai Tara stated that even though his fate has placed him [physically] far away from Rajoana, he forever stands firm at his side. In Bhai Tara’s own words, he has always, from the bottom of his heart, respected Bhai Rajoana’s decision to sacrifice himself. Bhai Tara also pledged to carry on the freedom movement until his last breath. At last, he requested all Singhs to refrain from indulging in any controversy and to continue to have communal respect for each other.

  5. Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara was the mastermind of the plot to assassinate CM Beant Sio. The court found him "guilty" for arranging for the explosives and working closely with BKI activists based in Pakistan to assassinate the CM. Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana on the other hand was good friends with Bhai Dilawar Singh Babbar, however not an active member of BKI himself. Just like stated earlier, he was going to be used in case Bhai Dilawar Singh failed for whatever reason. Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara is imprisoned for life as he appealed his sentence, pleading not guilty in the court. We hope and pray in feet of Waheguru to once again bless his Singh with freedom so he can continue seva of Khalsa Panth.

  7. http://www.sikh24.com/2012/02/uk-appeal-to-identify-man-involved-in-passenger-bus-abuse/ WEST MIDLANDS, UK (February 9, 2012)–SANDWELL POLICE are appealing for help in identifying a man who racially abused a passenger on a bus leaving West Bromwich. The unprovoked attack took place on the top deck of the 451 bus on Thursday 26 January just after 4pm. Three men and a woman had boarded the bus in West Bromwich and were seated upstairs. One of the men immediately became aggressive towards two of the passengers. The 39-year-old victim of the assault boarded the bus outside Sandwell Hospital. The offender approached the victim and over a five minute period, verbally abused and physically assaulted him, removing his turban twice. The offender and his companions got off the bus at Kingstanding Circle outside Blunts shoe shop. Police constable Wesley Monk, from West Bromwich police station, said: “This was a particularly vicious and unprovoked attack on a man who was simply traveling on a bus in the afternoon. “We are keen to trace anyone who may have seen the attack or who recognises the offender. Although hate crime incidents, such as this, are uncommon we do take them very seriously indeed.” The offender is described as a medium to heavily built white man, aged 20 – 25, around 5ft 6in tall with grey eyes, short dark hair and a round clean shaven face. 8. http://www.sikh24.com/2012/02/youth-reform-singh-sabha-slough/ Slough, UK (February 9, 2012)–This past weekend saw the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Slough’s Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, attended by over 200 members which included a large group of Naujwaan (youth). The AGM was called to discuss the opening of the new Sikh Centre, its uses, and other pressing issues. It had been rumoured that some anti panthik elements of the community wanted to use the Sikh Centre for manmat activities, including a party hall with meat and sharaab. The large attendance of young people and sangat put mass pressure that Sikhi based principles and Rehit Maryada became the focal point for decisions being made. The Naujwaan group presented their concerns on the consumption of meat and alcohol on the premises with such finesse that the committee and a majority of the attending members were forced to resolve the issue by agreeing to follow Gurmat Rehat Maryada. The new resolution states that when the new centre opens, no meat or alcohol will be allowed onto the premises for consumption, leaving the remaining committee members concerned on how the £15,000+ loan will be repaid as cultural wedding parties will no longer be acceptable under the new resolution. The resolution may come as a shock to those who do not currently follow the teachings of Sikhi in their daily lives, but with Guru Ji’s grace, the change will hopefully bring an increased awareness of Sikhi principles into Slough’s sangat and aid them in implementing Sikhi into their celebrations. This peaceful resolution was brought about by the pressure of local youth coming together to ensure Gurmat practices were implemented in the running of the complex and is a great success story about positive change.
  9. http://www.sikh24.com/2012/01/sangat-tv-cancels-scheduled-interview-after-pressures/ TV Station Alleges Trustees Were Not Aware of The Show Nor Advertised It London, England (January 20, 2012)–Sangat TV, famed for its broadcasting during the UK Riots in various parts of London, is now facing backlash from Sikh Sangat for cancelling a program which was supposed to be aired tonight. The program was meant to bring to light the story of a Sikh family whose daughter had converted to Islam after being seduced. Sangat TV on the other hand is denying this and alleging its trustees were not aware of the show and it was never advertized to take place. The originally scheduled interview highlighted how the conversion disrupted the happy Sikh family and left it shattered. The program was well advertised online and was being awaited by Sikh masses living throughout the world and had their eyes on Sangat TV. It has been learned that Sangat TV has faced enormous pressures from third parties due to which it ended up cancelling the program temporarily. The Sikh couple whose daughter, aged 13 at the time of conversion, highlighted in the interview the sophisticated methods used for entrapment and spoke of their daughter’s grooming along with the failings of the Police and authorities. It has been learned that the interview was conducted at least 3-4 weeks before it was to be aired. It was with extreme courage and bravery that the British Sikh Couple had decided to talk about such sensitive matters that could be life threatening to them. The story of the Sikh couple that had their daughter seduced and forced to convert is definitely sad, however it’s not a unique story. Many cases of forced conversions have taken place in the UK, but due to many reasons, they are not discussed openly. Had this interview aired as scheduled, it would have brought much needed attention to the issue at hand. A source close to SangatTV stated: “The Police strongly advised them not to show the [programme] today fearing increase in community tensions. A Muslim community rep today contacted the Sikh community to ask the show is not shown for sake of community cohesion. Sangat TV support the issues being raised by SAS however trustees were not aware of the recorded show nor advertised it. They need to make sure it is presented in a suitable way which does not create legal implications for the station. The two main trustees are abroad and back next week. Next week the trustees will view [the] show and if happy that it is presented in a way which doesn’t cause the channel or the community problems they are happy to put it on.“ For more information on Muslim conversions in the UK, visit WhyIChoseSikhism.com
  10. The Sikh Army was the most potent force faced by the British in India. The Khalsa Fauj acquitted itself creditably in the two Anglo Sikh wars. British historians have alluded to the skill of the Sikh gunners during the battles at Mudki and Chillianwala during the two Anglo Sikh wars. The gunners and their pieces of artillery were the legacy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The maharaja who ruled the Punjab for 40 years till his demise in 1839 built the artillery of the Khalsa Fauj (Army) to an unprecedented efficiency level. No Indian ruler could match the genius of Ranjit [singh] who built up his artillery with the help of foreign advisors–mostly French. The period from 1801 to 1839 marked the development of the Sikh army from a semi feudal and disorganized force to an efficient fighting machine that could hold its own against the best European armies. Among the advisors hired by Ranjit Singh the Frenchman General Jean Francois Allard, General Paola Evitable who was an Italian, and Claude August Court held sway. Out of these, Court alone set about organizing the artillery. He joined the Maharaja’s service in 1827 and also married a local [Punjabi] girl. He started the training of the gunners and made the organization of the batteries and guns.In fact he raised the level of efficacy of the Khalsa army at par with the western powers. The foundries of Maharaja Ranjit Singh were adapted by Court to produce high quality guns and howitzers. In this he was helped by local gun smith Sardar Lahina Singh Majithia. It is worthwhile to remember that when the first shell was made at the Lahore foundry the Maharaja bestowed a prize of Rs 30,000 on Court. Subsequently fuses for the guns were also manufactured there. The contribution of Court to the development of Sikh artillery is monumental. His effect on the Artillery efficacy bore fruit later as during the wars with the British, Sikh guns made the British pay a heavy price by their lethal salvos. The Sikh artillery really came into its own only after the entry of the European advisors of Ranjit Singh. This artillery was to distinguish itself in the battles of the North West frontier and later [against] the British. The most lethal part of the Sikh army were the guns manufactured at the maharaja’s foundries at Lahore. These guns added teeth to the Khalsa (Sikh) army making it into a formidable force. Ranjit Singh had about 35 artillery pieces when he started his reign in 1801. However by the time of the first Anglo-Sikh war in 1845 the Sikhs could marshal nearly 250 guns. Some historians estimate that Ranjit Singh’s army may well have had more than 500 artillery pieces. Ranjit Singh must take credit for the development of the artillery in his army. Right from 1807 he was seized with the idea of manufacturing his own cannons. This was the year he established his first workshop for casting of the barrels of cannons. In another 2 years mortars were produced and Ranjit [singh] instructed his chief engineer Mian Qadir Bakhsh, a Muslim, to study the British guns and make similar copies. Also on the advice of his French generals [he] set up the horse drawn artillery. By 1830 Ranjit [singh] could look at his gunnery division and appreciate the fact that he had over 100 horse drawn artillery pieces. The Sikhs soon mounted an invasion of the North West. In battles with the Pathans and the Afghans in the Frontier region the Sikh Army made significant use of Artillery. The Battle of Jamrud and capture of the fort was in no way possible without the unerring aim of the Sikh gunners. Their lethal fire caused heavy causalities among the Afghans. When Maharaja died in 1839 he left behind a potent military force equipped with professional artillery. But the Sikh leadership committed hara-kiri by attacking the British with whom Ranjit [singh] had a treaty of peace. The Sikh army aided by the artillery would have carried the day, but poor generalship and a desire to let the British win by the traitorous Sikh Prime Minister Gulab Singh and his coterie led to the defeat of the Sikhs. The battles at Mudki and Chillianwale will forever be etched in [the] memory of the glorious effect of the Sikh artillery while the sun was setting on the Sikh Kingdom. A lot of guns were captured by the British and were paraded at Calcutta after the second Sikh war. Many were melted down at their foundry at Cossipore. However with the passage of time only a handful of artillery pieces are available mostly in the UK and the Lahore Museum. http://www.sikh24.co...-ranjeet-singh/ Admin Note: Please follow forum rules regarding posting News article. 11. http://www.sikh24.com/2012/01/sikh-free-school-planned-in-leeds/ Leeds, UK (January 9, 2012)–With backing from the New Schools Network, Sikhs plan to open a new free specialist primary school in the Chapeltown area. Project leaders are hoping to utilise a disused building near the Gurdwara on Chapeltown Road for the school. The school will be non-faith specific and therefore open to all members of the local community. Initial plans suggest that the school will enroll one form of 30 children and extend intake year by year. A spokesperson for the project, Mr Sukhraj Singh, said that the plan is “to set up a school teaching more subjects based around science. We want to give something back to the community and offer a new opportunity for our younger children, to set them in the right direction for a professional career.” The New Schools Network funded by the Department of Education is currently offering to help free school groups aiming to open by September 2013 in deprived areas. Coordinators of the project are receiving expert help in exhibiting sufficient demand for the school and are also being given access to legal and business expertise via seminars, workshops and special “boot camps” being held at the Network’s HQ in London. A formal submission will be made to the Department of Education by the end of February, with teachers joining forces with business people, religious leaders and parents to ensure that the scheme succeeds.

  14. http://www.sikh24.com/2012/01/canadian-sikh-to-create-history-eyes-ndp-leadership/ Sikh Community Urged to Support Martin Singh Martin Singh Ottawa (January 5, 2012)–For the first time in Canadian history, a Sikh is running for the leadership of a major Canadian political party. Martin Singh, an Amritdhari Singh, who converted to Sikhism when he was 18 years old, is running for the leadership of the federal New Democratic Party. Up until this past Summer, the leadership of the New Democratic Party was held by Jack Layton, a very popular figure in the Sikh community in Canada. Jack Layton courageously stood time and time again with the Sikh Community on the right to wear a kirpan and also in solidarity in opposition to the genocide of Sikhs in India in 1984. Martin Singh’s campaign is picking up a lot of momentum and support not just within the Sikh community in Canada but also among the broader community as well. Many keen observers believe that Martin Singh has a strong chance to win the leadership at the NDP convention on March 24, 2012. Martin Singh is a successful businessperson. He has 4 university degrees in chemical engineering, pharmacy as well as an MBA. He and his brother operate a number of pharmacies and care homes that employ over 150 people. Martin Singh has 4 key platforms that he is running on: entrepreneurship, a national pharmacare program, the environment, and leadership itself.
