Thank u so much for ur msg, I've learned a lot and your blessings have made me feel even more confident. I've been reading a book my bhai ranbir Singh ji bir called the power of ardas. It speaks about how draupati did many ardas' but it was only at the end (when she had no hope from anyone or confidence in herself at all) krishan ji saved her honor.

I have faith in waheguru ji, he's joined us for a reason, it's kalyug which is encouraging things like divorce so we've just got to do more paath to fight it off. I heard a katha by sant waryam Singh ji and they explained how kalyug came to guru nanak dev ji and tried offering jewels and riches but guru sahib was committed to naam japna at the end kalyug promised guru sahib that whoever recites gurbani he won't be able to harm/touch them.

Guru gobind Singh's jis bachan about its being a paap to even think about anyone but your wife keeps my mind grounded to my hubby because my parents try saying I'll end up with someone better etc but dhan dhan guru gobind Singh jis bachans don't let my mind drift. I hope guru sahib has pity on me and cuts my bad karam in my dreams ( as I have read in many saakhis)

I am definitely going to try and do chaupai sahib daily with waheguru jis kirpa, I hope he'll keep my mind in his lotus feet as currently I'm doing paath but I'm mind isn't resting.

I know we have a karma account and some things may not be good for us etc If we turn our worries into prayers then guru sahib can make anything happen. I mean if we spoke about the lockdown last year it would've seemed crazy/impossible but guru sahib made it happen. Similarly, although logically/looking at the facts it may seem that me n my hubby have no chance getting back together - if guru ji wants he can make it happen.

I seem stupid sometimes, I say all of this but then I still cry.... May waheguru ji have pity on me, I try to keep faith but doubts still come into my mind, I try to focus on paath but my mind still wonders, I try to accept his will but my heart still tells me to hope.... I feel useless, waheguru ji is my only hope. I hope he blesses me with either a reunion with my hubby or death...

I was listening to sant maskeen singh jis katha on hukam. And he said hukam is whatever has happened it was supposed to. So hukam is the past. But we cant say that what will happen in the future will be hukam or gods will. There our freewill can come into it.

So have hope. The future can be changed and fixed by Guru sahib.

Also please stop tormenting yourself with these thoughts abt ur failed marriage. Tell urself that i will  only allow myself to doubt lament and cry for 1 hour each day. Rest of the time think God knows best. It is in his hands. For example of a thought abt ur future,.marriage or husband comes up. Say to urself later. Think of something else now. And try to do other things with ur life. Live ur life. Pray for ur marriage and for ur happiness and success 2 hrs or how much ever u want in the morning. And in the evening. And allow 1 hr to cry. Other then these hrs do not waste ur life thinking and crying. Do things.live. enjoy time with ur family. With nature. Dont waste ur jawani crying like a widow. Ofc when u talk to ppl they may bring up ur marriage. Then just say it will be as Guru Sahib wishes. Or we will see. And change the subject.

"Save Sikhs, Kill non-Sikhs" vs "The light of God resides in everyone."

Im not sure i understand the question right.

But the contradiction is easily resolved. Just because the light of God resides in someone doesn't mean we cant kill them. Lots of ppl questioned Guruji like you are supposed to be saintly, holy so why are u indulging in wealth, power and violence. But God kills as well. He is destroyer etc.

And the pangti I quoted was actually Maanas Ki Jaat Sabhe Ekai Pehchanbo. Which means all humans are equal, in which case yeah we shouldn't be killing nonsikhs lol.

But the Save Sikhs pangti can only apply in war situations. In which case the true sikhs would ofcourse be on the side of Right. In which case nonsikhs would always be wrong. Also Chaupai sahib says multiple times like save my sikhs and sewaks. Sewaks are non sikh people who follow gurusahib. So everyone on the good side is to be saved, because sikh should be synonymous with good. Also it is a prayer, not a command. A prayer to God to save the sikhs

Or it applies internally, like save the Sikh qualities and destroy nonsikhs ones. Or more succinctly, kill the nonsikh in me, keep the sikh alive.

Yeah lots of handwaving explanations. But like the other religions, its only fair to have a few violent/questionable quotes

But in reality, all of dasam needs a big background and context explanation along with metaphorical/allegorical literary analysis to really avoid the pitfalls. I think thats why these granths were kinda kept hidden in sampardas and deras so only accessible with a knowledgeable gursikh there to guide one. Not really for the grihisti, everyday man. I tried reading Chritropakhyan was really graphic in parts. But listening to Principle Harbhajan Singh, a scholar of Dasam Granth explaining the metaphors etc really helps make it palatable.

Guru Nanak came to the world teaching that humans are the same, ocean in the drop, drop in the ocean, and yet people on here continue their racist closed minded rants. You have learned nothing of what the Gurus taught if you can’t accept this one fact.

The Gurus spread love. You are not spreading love, only hate.

Humans are the same as in they have the same rights and soul. No one is higher or lower or better than someone else.

Its also important that our language and culture don't die out.  Or we wont understand our language and the message Guru Nanak brought to this world. Only way that's happening is if we marry within our race and teach our kids the culture and to marry into the culture.

Guruji also said not to marry your daughter into a Muslims house, a debtor etc. Because that will make it hard to follow the path to Truth. One still has to earn and deserve the Truth. For that its inportant to have a stable life

Otherwise if a half Chinese-panjabi and a African-Italian have a kid. What languages will the poor kid learn? Hes gonna have to learn all 4 or learn one and stick with english. And he will lose on the different foods, cant master all culinary styles. Not to mention the religions.

Any story you look up about a mixed race child will be about confusion and feeling left out. Only when they get older do they learn to be abke to live with a no identity/mixed identity.

I think the problem some of us(including me)don't understand completely what we are reading and reciting. When you are watching football or general tv you understand and it evokes emotion.

I didnt either. Then long ago when i was innocent and good, I set a goal to do a sehaj paath. (I think i may have bragged about this in the past and it may have been to you too.. so sorry if im repeating myself) but i wasnt good at reading gurmukhi and I also wanted to understand what the guru was saying. So I would listen to a sehaj paath. Theres many recordings online. While following along srigranth.org with meanings. And some of it was so beautiful, it makes one cry. And some of it really guilt trips u lol. Like guru amardas ji calling u a bista ka keera again and again.

Ofc i could only do this for an hour. Our attention span is limited. So then listen to kirtan. Lots of emotion stirring stuff out there from subliminal raag to akj heart-rending tunes. To motivating dasam bani to uplifting shabads.

I know its a popular story especially in today's SJW dominated world but just how reliable is that story of Guru Hargobind sahib ji building a masjid when 10th master has written

(Through out the world the Khalsa Panth will be prominent. Within this world the Dharm of the Hindus and Turks will take flight.)

(The vidhya of both the Panths(of Hindus and Muslims) is corrupted. Elevate the teesr Panth(over the other two Panths).)

(Demolish the graves, mandhirs and mosques. Make me meditate on the One Akal, Har Har.)

(Eradicate the Vedas and eighteen Puranas. Eradicate the Azaan(ਬਾਂਗ), Namaaz, circumcision(ਸੁਨੰਤ) and Quran.)

I think that was meant metaphorically as in destroy the worship of mosques mandars from the minds of sikhs.

Because, some clueless Sikh was saying Zafarnama is not the writing of GGSJ as it says I am an idol destroyer and my mission it to eradicate idols.

Guruji ofc never destroyed a single idol AFAIK. But its true nonetheless. From the houses and minds of Sikhs, idol worship has been eradicated.

Or it could be a prophecy about the future or not even a prophecy. But the mission of Khalsa. That would be a cool national anthem for Khalistan ?

So just wanted to clarify before antiDasam forces came out again. They also dont like Chaupai Sahib because it says Sikh Ubhaar Asikh Sangaro. Save the sikhs and kill the nonsikhs. They say someone who said Manav Ki Jot Sabhai Ekai Pehchaanbo cant have written that.

    Such black and white thinking...?

Exactly, Punjab has the lowest percentage of muslims out of any state in the whole of India and that is because we tore them apart when the attacked us unprovoked in Rawalpindi. Sikhs in Punjab today don't know what it's like living side by side with muslims. They realise soon enough when they come to England. Muslims are far worse than Hindus, 100 times worse.

I really don't understand some Sikhs. A lot of them wish for an undivided Punjab where Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus live side by side.  What they don't realise is that we would be a tiny minority in such a state and would be forced to speak, read and write Urdu instead of Gurmukhi Punjabi.

Sikhs in punjab really do not know what it's like living with Muslim because punjab has one of the smallest population of muslims in india.

Hindus on the other hand have been living with rapidly growing muslim population for a very long time.

Yeah my mom lived in Mumbai which has a huge muslim pop and she is always so grateful that the Muslims were driven out of Panjab. Otherwise  she says the streets would be filled with paan and spit and would be so unsafe.

Ofc ppl can say the same abt sikhs with their curry smell and multiple relatives.

  9. Its hard to find time to read path parkash and type its summary. And i am not even halfway done reading the first volume. So from now on, I will just write my thoughts and how far Ive progressed into sikh history.

Also the link to the English version above, provided by dallysingh101, has really good, understandable tranlsation in english. Its better to  read that instead of my dry and blunt summaries.

To illustrate how the enemity dtarted between the mughals and sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur's shaheedi parsang is told. How emperor aurangzeb decided to convert all hindus to turks.he rounded up the hindus and demanded they convert or die or be exiled.  The hindus cleverly told him that we follow brahmins. If you were to convert them, we will as well.

The emperor than rounded up the brahmins of kashmir. They asked for a time delay and started havans and pujas and mantar chanting. But someone complained that they were doing black magic. The Kjng got angry and so the army and its  officers were sent to Kashmir to round up all the brahmins in kashmirs. So all the brahmins/pandits in Kashmir were either killed or converted or exiled. When brahmins in other parts of india heard, they panicked and hid. Then some from kaashi decided the only brave and steong enough entity is the house of Nanak.

The rest of the sakhi is as we have heard. Except that the author goes onto to explain that while Guru Nank had blessed these Chugtai Mughals rule of india. Guruji had also said only as long as you dont do zulum/tyranny or rise against the Gurus house. And babbar said, who gives a conditional gift, to he taken back. So guruji says, well we will make it Our head the price for taking it back. So the 9th guru was looking for an excuse to give their head.

They remind me of Jews in a way.

They can't have descended from Kshatriyas! That's madness.

i read about this a while back.

Khatri actually means mixed caste. It was when like the 2nd or 3rd sons of the kshatris married lower caste people or something like that.

I have forgotten the source but it basically said that khatri is not the same as kshatri.

Imagine they are Jews tho. Long ago they settled in india and started this class. And most of them come from pakistaan. And look similar to the afghani sikhis. So could be a strain off of the jewish branch that coverted first to hinduism then sikhi

    Sort of a tangent..

I really enjoy some Kirtan I found lately without insturmentation.

Is there a word for Shabad Kirtan without instruments...or at least..without harmonium?

I've been entranced by the sound of harmonium before but...currently find it distracting from the beauty of the Bani itself being sung.

    Acappella?

    Jk .

Theres no word for it. Except for jaap sahib and other banis that have a rhythm we say Chaal. Which tranlated could mean stride or flow. Like the flow of this river is fast or slow. So we say the chaal of this bani is like a snake (bhujhangi shand) or honey like (madhbhaar shand)

Also for singing people can say that was sung in Lai. Which is like melody. Like listen to this person he does japji shaib in a nice lai..

Theres not really a word for it. Most people when they like a shabad or paath automatically start singing it their own way. When you feel it within, it bubbles out.

Warm greetings to all the readers, only in case the moderator finds the concepts of Sikhism strong enough to answer my thoughts that I am about to share. I am a sabat-surat sikh and I love tying my turban. I know I look good in a turban and I love the community that I am fortunately a part of. I love how we have truly become one of the most vital communities in maintaining peace on the planet.

I won't cut my hair. I don't have the courage to face the taunts of my relatives and the sadness of my parents. Moreover, the damage that has happened to my hair can't be reversed, so theirs no use of cutting it.

But one thing is for sure that I am unable to respect this concept in our religion. And I would forever find it unfair...

    Greetings.

You make good points. But are perhaps missing the bigger picture.

People have been calling sikhs especially amritdharis impractical for a long time. They made fun of simran, mindless repeating like a parrot, until the West starting lauding meditation.

They made fun of suchamta, the cleaniliness, until well Covid-19 and coronavirus.

They made fun of the open, flowing beard but now its in style.

Too many restrictions like not eating out etc. And then the food poisonings and health violations in most restaurant.

All I can say is, be grateful that ur genetic inheritance did not give you a bigger burden. Due to parental pressure and your relatives judgement, you are forced to wear this turban,.just because genetics favored you to be born a panjabi. Genetics could have given you psoriasis, disability etc.

I just feel sorry for future sikhs, like your kids, their parents wont guilt trip them onto this path. So they will be like everyone else. Lost, bored, purposeless. Thinking the only point of life is to be rich and have a corporate job. They will be having early mid life crisis. When they put all their energy and effort towards this job, and get so minimal in return.

Isnt belonging to a community, knowing ur past, worth the hassle?

You do make some good points that alwe as sikhs will have to address. Driving a motorcycle with a turban IS more dangerous than with a helmet. There is a new type of helmet invented that u put around your neck. And it will acitivate and cover ur head when u hit something.

So.im sure we can find more solutions. Like what to wear during skydiving. N-95 Respirator masks that work with beards.

Also remembet there are people worse off. There are sikhs that believe they must wear a chola at all times. How dangerous that must be in a factory environment. Sikhs that believe in only eating food cooked in sarbloh. So in college, along with classes,.they have to cook their food everyday too. Some of these students are in the West. Other sikhs believe you must do nitnem which takes 1 hour daily. Or simran for 2 hours daily. How much aretime and effort are they losing out on comparered to their colleagues?

I had a 30 min drive during clinicals. So would do nitnem while driving cuz shifts that lasted from 5 am to 9 pm dont leave that much time. Plus we were supposed to study as well. I also felt like doing paath, taking a bath in the morning vs evening was wasting my time. But perhaps we are actually doing something right, getting more work life balance.

Also if you work such long shifts and on a computer (as a coder?) Why is corporate dresscode required? In the US, people who work with computers and not clients have a relaxed dresscode.

  13. Next Guru Nanak goes to Delhi. Here the king is ibrahim lodhi, a pathaan. He has corced all the holy sants and peers into labor camps to run handmills (chakkis) because he thinks they are fake and deceive public. They pray to GuruNanak to save them. Guruji then makes all their baskets float above their heads and the handmills work themselves. Guards take Guruji to the king. He demands that guru be exiled outside of Delhi cor black magic. Guruji says I will come back to Delhi and there will be a new badshah/emperor of india. So the king went crazy and soon the Chugtai(mughals) won delhi. Rattan singh says the Chugtai were followers of Guruji hence sikh.

Molly( that is what the author now refers to captain murray) asks what about the rest of the Gurus.

That was interesting. I havent gotten to that part yet. The viewpoint that Rattan singh was descendent of tat khalsa so biased against banda singh is interesting. Will keep that in mind.

So far what I dont like about Rattan singh is that he tries ro explain the supernatural causes behind events and what he thinks the Gurus were thinking. This unnecessarily complicates things. I wish he had just stuck to this is what happened. (For example why Guru tegh bahadur gave his head and why guru ji created khalsa and why shaheedi of chotte sahibzade happened. Even Murray gets confused and says if Guru ji meant to sacrifice his family how is  it the fault of the mughals?)

I really wish we could find the account of the captain Murray. That he was supposed to have written and sent to London. I also tried looking up Dr Cole that is supposed to have done the surgery of Guru Gobind Singhs wounds in the final days. But not much luck. Perhaps as you are in the UK, you could have more luck.

How you getting on with the reading?

So i have been reading but not consistently.

It talks about Guru Nanak Dev Jis childhood. But in brief as the author keeps stating he fears the granth will get too big if he recounts everything and to look to other sources for more detailed sakhis.

After hearing these sakhis Captain Murray says I do now believe Guru Nanak existed. But why is there a sakhi of him metting King Karron/Carrom? who existed atleast a thousand years before Guru Nanak. And the author stated that some writers are ignorant copycats and not true writers. They do not research or even think about their claims. It is true that those two never met. In fact Guru Nank dev ji probably used it as a reference that look at King Carron Who had 18 lacs of gold and when he died he was not able to take anything with him. And so some clueless writer wrote that Guru Nanak personally said that to King Carrom. And other writers repeated that without thinking.

So Rattan singh( the author) describes all the miracles that Guru Nanak Dev ji did like the snake shading him, etc. But in brief. He says that Guru Nanak would go with his friends and give Mardana Ji reeds to play as an instrument and would sing and talk about God. His father tried to make him do business but Guruji was too vapervah(carefree). Finally their brother in law took him to sultanpur. Where they worked at Daulat Khans shop. Then one day disappeared in the river while bathing. Came back wayy later. All the Qazis were saying black magic. daulat khan had Guruji tested by doctors. And guruji taught the doctor a lesson. Then Daukat khan had faith in guruji's miracle. And he continued to serve Guruji and was blessed with 2 sons. People heardnof this and many people came for help to Guruji. Who when burning would not run towards cool water? Guruji would bless them with whatever they desired.

Finally Guruji left on an udasi(odyssey) and covered all of Panjab and most ppl became Sikh.  Then went to the south and saw how most hindu temples were desecrated by Mughals. Guruji turned the people from worshipping devis, and pirs to reciting the Name. Hindus and Muslims came to him and Guruji taught them to be truthful, to not exploit etc.

Then Guruji went North. Met the sidhs and won them all and tuened them towards the Truth.

Then bhai mardana wanted to visit Mecca. Guru ji took him. And Guruji was able to open a door that noone else could. While the maulivis were trying to figure out who did that. All the doors to the Kabaa were closed. When they gave up trying to open the maulvis decided to  find out who did this. They made everyone touch the doors but they wouldnt open. Finally Guruji was left. But they were relectant to ask a Hindu holy man. How could we be lower than hindus? But some muslims from india told them that Guru Nanak taught both Muslims and Hindus. To muslims he said to do bandgi and to hindus to do bhagti.

They resolved to ask Guruji kjndly to open the doors so everyones hajj can be completed. If he cant open them, we will kill him they schemed. But Guruji sent mardana to touch the door and it opened.

From there Guru ji went East. Where black magic was heavily practiced. And then where women ruled. To all Guruji taught to be kind, not exploitive and to chant the name.

can someone explain if suraj parkash is right or wrong? why is it reliable if it was written in 1843, which was way after guru jis time. I follow taksal maryada and i havent quite understood why the taksal has chosen to do suraj parkash parchar.

Nothing is so simple. That u can write it as right or wrong. Only gurbani has the daraja that we can say its 100% correct and shudh as it was written by the Gurus themselves and checked by them. Even then there are small discrepencies between the different historical birs due to human error.

So every thing else we cant say is 100% correct. BUT that does not mean we discard it. Look at the muslims and chriatians, there scriptures were written years later and are translated so many times from the original yet they still have faith.

And unless this new wave of discard dasam granth discard this that is sweeping into the panth, it was the opposite in the olden days. Sikhs would read and learn from other faiths scriptures. now we r maligning our own. Theres always something u can learn from everything.

Wheres the scholarly spirit of sikhs? Where u read different sources, compare and come to ur own nirna/formulation?

On facebook, ppl used to write sikhs are so dumb they created most of history but did not write any of theirnown history.

And now we have history of the gurus time And WRITTEN BY SIKHS, and sikhs are complaining about it!!

Look bhai santokh singh and bhai rattan singh the respected writers of sooraj granth, panth parkash etc did their job and wrote down what they knew and what they heard from other sikhs and villagers. They acted like recorders and wrote down all that was prevalent at that time. So that those sakhis would not get lost. So we should be thankful! And if we dont agree with a sakhi, thats ok that was probably just a folklore that got added in. Look at the muslims, they have rated their hadiths on how accuruate they were. And they still kept the not so accurate ones but just noted that it wasnt thst authentic.

Also Taksal is about keeping the scholarly spirit of sikhi alive. In the olden days, its curriculum included reading hindu granths for comparison and debate education. Even now they read sarkitavali, a translation intl panjabi of a hindu puraan. And u want taksal to give up Sooraj parkash because of a few inaccuracies? Taksal is perfectly capable of explaining those inaccuracies and providing opposing evidence. They wont get brainwashed.

I am young(24) and as I said before, my career is priority at the moment. I won't date/marry till 27 or 28. But I have made my mind, whenever the right time comes, I will marry(not Anand karaj) a non sikh kudi( preferably a Kashmiri Musalmaani). I don't care what society thinks of me anymore. I can't be hanged if I dislike sikh women. Am not self hating or anything but extremely disappointed about the actions of "kaurs" that I saw both in my family and friends. Finding a real kaur is like finding a unicorn

The real question is why. Why are sikh girls so bad? Could it be due to the different expectations for sikh girls and boys?

Boys are told to be kesadhari, girls are not. And since most people, only focus on sikhi being about kesh, girls have nothing to do with sikhi then. They are excluded. So they look elsewhere maybe?

How are Sikhs raising their daughters? That they are coming out so bad compared to other communities. Maybe being so women respecting is causing all this problem. Muslim and hindus are stricts with their daughters, and their daughters are good. Maybe there's a correlation?

And perhaps mixed marriages are part of the cause. Perhaps ur daughter will want to look like her mom (ie Non-sikh) and she like her mom will want to be with people outside her community like her mother was.

Also what guarantee is it, that a sikh girl wont end up with a PA? Punjabi athiest? Girls and boys should do a very deep background check before marriage. Otherwise, it is stupid, ur just randomly marrying strangers. We need to make the vichola culture stronger. If anything comes out wrong, we should sue the vichola and hold him accountable. Or only parents or siblings should be allowed to be vichole.

  19. From what I have heard, the nihangs were going to feed the nk poor migrants workers who have no income and no way bbn of feedungnthemselves. The police were refusing and were cussing using very bad language.

I think we should support the Nihangs because they will already he punished by the law.

And kirpaan has the word aan in it. Which is like anakh. So perhaps its right to raise ur weapon for self respect.

waheguru ji ka Khalsa waheguru ji ki fathe

iv been doing kirtan and I really enjoy it and want to advance In kirtan but my voice sounds very bad and I need to improve it so is there any advice form any one how to improve my voice so I can do kirtan better

I had the same problem. My voice was horrible. And I gave up kirtan because of it. But years later I picked it up and only sing for myself and guruji. That took the pressure off and I started to enjoy it.

And i noticed my voice has gotten better with practice. What really helps is to do riyaaz. Which is like scales. SA Re ga ma pa da ni sa. Stay on the SA key for as long as you have breath and try to match ur voice to the key. Do this for each sargam/scale. And each time you sing a shabad, try to match ur voice with the keys too. The more u practice the better. I used to have trouble hitting the high noted. My voice would squeak or crack. So i learned that if u sing from ur abdomen on the high notes, its more powerful then just sknging from ur throat.

If u dont know the sargam/scales u can google them, find many youtube videos and even books. You can learn new shabads from youtube or kirtan raag books. There are tons of sikh libraries online. Search for it.

Also raagmala is a bani about raags. The musical melodies. So if you read it. You should be more easily able to master music.
