  2. Hello,

I'm a 13 year old boy living in a Asian area, I go to a school where Sikhs are the majority. I need some advise, 95% of all the Sikhs in my school cut their hair while 5% keep their hair, I'm in the 'keeping my hair' category. I feel like I want to cut my hair; I'm starting to leave religion and go towards becoming a Atheist; I want to fit in school; and I'm not interested in learning Punjabi. I don't know what to do, my parents have cut their hair but my grandparents want me to keep my hair. Please help!

putting it simply you would be making a mistake if you cut your hair. I made that mistake too when i was about 12, so did a few of my cousins, i regreted it from the very moment, and then i wasted 7 years of convincing myself it was the right decision, but nothing ever went right, i think i probably suffered so much that I found sikhi again.

you need to keep you hair! it is the identity of a Sikh. I think you should even start looking at wearing a dastar if you dont already. if you tie a gol dastar or dhamala then your kesh will not come loose during sports etc , and dastar looks better than a massiv joora :)

learning punjabi will be the best thing you do in your life. trust me, i know from experience.

try to find some good sikh sangat, and try getting involved with your local gurdwara, maybe a gurmat class, or gatka class? how about tabla or kirtan class, then you will make friends who will help you with your sikhi and help you understand things you not sure about.

Hair grows on you body for a reason, why dont you do some research on the internet? and dont try to fit in with the majority, in the world the majority are doing the wrong things, like eating meat, drinking alcohol, cutting hair, smoking, taking drugs, stealing, swearing etc etc, all these things are what the 'majority ' do.......

Always remember we are sons and daughters of Guru Gobind Singh!!! we represent the Khalsa.

Try doing some simran and mool mantar paath in the morning, and then start reading japji sahib and slowly do your full nitnem, that will give you courage to uphold your sikhi, most people will actually like you for standing up for your beliefs.

  3. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa

    Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sikhi is different from other religions, sikhi is , a way of life........its not about numbers, Guru ji doesnt need a big 'religion', its actually our personal choice, do we want to walk the path of Khalsa, if not then no one can help you , no saint , nobody.......

there was a purpose for Guru Nanak Ji to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, it was the Hukam of Akaal Purakh to establish a panth, a marayada, of Truth within kaljug, where there is so much sin. God created us out of piyaar. we should create Love for God, Jin Prem Kiyo tin hi prabh paeo ... our birth on earth is part of a journey, but we start establishing ourselves here, as if we are here to stay, we forget the creator and just enjoy the creation, and get attached to things, this takes us further away from God, and realisation, thus our ignorance over the existence of God!!!

.. we meditate on God's name, Va He Gu Ru, first waking at Amrit Vela after washing our body, then we meditate, this 'washes' our mind, it clears our karma , it brings clarity, it clears the blocks in our life and allows us to connect with the universe and develop our relationship with the creator and the creation.

by practising this we can have the experience of elevation, our mind, body , soul can experience spirituality, we become Chardi kala, in our life we will experience God. As you become more connected to your soul, all the answers will come to you, and you will find that whenever you have a question, then you will find the answer come to you, and you will have the capacity to recognise that answer...

one thing I have learnt is that when you have doubts, when you look around and search for answers then you will probably never satisfy your mind.

but by following in the footsteps of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and other Shaheed Singhs, by reciting Nitnem, by reading Gurbani, by waking at Amrit Vela like they did, we can experience exactly what they did.

The key thing to note is that we need to experience it for ourselves, not rely on what people say, your relationship with Guru ji is very personal. Guru ji is always near to you, try talking to him, try doing ardas, do a benti, humble yourself, love everyone around you, show kindness and compassion in everything, that is what a Sikh is.

Always remember that the creator is within his creation, learn to love and recognise the presence of God, and every act , every thought, every word you speak, make it holy and graceful as you are in the presence of the Lord.

    Love and Light to All

  5. VJKK VJKF

An amritdhari singh got arrested in the library last week after someone saw his kirpan. When police arrived the singh tried explaining that he is allowed by law. However it seemed that the officier did not know what a sikh is, and was unaware of any law. The singh wouldnt let them touch his kirpan. so they called for back up and in the end the singh got arrested with hand cuffs and leg straps as he refused to let them touch it. The singh is chardikala and does alot of seva in the north east of england, hes probably in his early 50's.

So some singhs have contacted the police to complain. We are planning to hold a meeting with the officer involved and also a sergant or someone higher up the ranks, this meeting is likely to be at the Gurdwara late this week or early next week.

We are disgusted at the treatment of this singh by the police. and would like to educate the police and prevent further occurances like this.

I understand the law allows us to wear a kirpan.

But i want to know is there any Sikh Body, or Sikh Lawyer or someone in the sangat who can help us or even attend this meeting or just give advice on what action to take???

like in america they have the sikh coalition? is there anything in England?

    Please help and advise........

  6. how about using this logic....

like we have public holidays in england, or there are holidays in india where people take the days of work.

How about we use sangrand and puranmashi days as an excuse to get the sangat together and hold a divaan..... the idea that it is sangrand or puranmashi can just be our excuse, to hold a kirtan darbar, and get everyone together, even the sangat that would normally not attend, they might come, and that way we start our month etc in Guru jees charan, and get lahaa.

i know alot of monay in my family who would go to the gurdwara on new years eve because they know that there will be a big kirtan darbar, (and EVERYONE will be there). Otherwise they may only attend once a month, or once a week on a sunday.

So wouldnt be a bad idea to implement in all gurdwaray

its just a bahanaa to go...... i think thats a good enough reason

there are things like the positioning and energy of the moon and how it affects the energy of the human body during full /half moon etc, which we can channel positively through kirtan and simran but i dont know enough to get into a arguement or debate with any internet warlords :)

  7. The Sikhs of the west all together should write a letter of complaint with a petition signed by all sangath members sen to the school and education authority of Punjab demanding an apology from the pricipal to the parents. We should also mention in the letter as to why the School could not employ a Gursikh Bibi/Singh for the posistion as Principal. It is a must that we should take action (through the pen ofcourse) how can we let this happen Punjab and let her get away with it. I request all Panthic leaders to get to together form a letter and petition to take this forward. Let this principal know how dare she mock our young sisters.

can you get a contact address?

also does anyone know when this happened, so that we can refer to it in the letter?

i think it is a good idea to write to them.

what should be included in the letter?

also can anyone confirm that no action has been taken?

  8. dont worry yourself, keep faith in Guru Ji, do ardas daily, and go as often as you can to the gurdwara to sit in the sangat and do seva .

ups and downs are part of life. dont expect too much from yourself. tought times usually make you assess and improve you life, also give value to things we take for granted.

look at it as not your life. but as if your living it for Guru ji, like in Maharajs service, live within the Hukam and accept his will, things will change once you change you outlook and expectations, sometimes it not even our own expectations but we worry what people think about us, again dont let this get to you............. doing nitnem , reading bani, listening to kirtan will all help to uplift you...

beg Maharaj to give you understanding , to serve mankind, to always keep you near him......

  9. sorry for making you feel bad

God dose not do anything .......

we have to get up and do something ... God can only help us. He can not pick us up and get us going he's not our mom

one way to prepare is to work on our rehit and making nitnem /amritvela pakka, and help those around us also to achieve Chardi Kala ,

im not saying i got the answer or this is the only way but this foundation will be necessary regardless, and while we sitting arguing over how its gonna happen .............:D

  11. Sikhishop sevadars are doing an amazing job....................giving an amazing service......................

if you have an issue go to them and discuss it, stop trying to give them a bad reputation, especially when they havent done anything wrong,

personally i think most of the time its just a bunch of idiots who have nothing better to do but complain,

if you dont want a nut n bolt kirpan dont buy it, if you dont like the quality dont buy it!!!

to sikhishop , dont let them make you close down, we need you to continue this service.........and you need to make money to cover your costs and there is nothing wrong in earning a profit, and I know you are actually cutting costs in every way but i dont think you should be running at a loss................and dont bother arguing with ppl.............

  12. in Nanaksar , sanpath paths are done along side an Akhand paath

this is a continuous reading of Japji Sahib and when every time Guru Nanak Jis Name is mentioned mool mantar and aukhi ghai da shabad is repeated at the beginning and end of that pauri.

Some Mahapurash have done Sanpath Paths of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, it takes along time .... .

I will try to get more reliable facts to why its done and how it came about....., the more bani read the better, so if some Jathay want to do it, I cant see it as a bad thing.......................

cant seem to find any info on the net about this tho.................................

  13. i was checking out the website sikhishop.com and was thinking about buying a few bits, but i was wondering if anyone has ordered off the website and what kind of quality their products were.

    Regard

    Gurdaspuria E12

    They are 'legit'

i use them all the time, excellant value and service.................. even if i tried, i couldnt find anything bad to say

in terms of quality, wat u see in the pics is wat u get........

u can always email them and ask about quality of individual items, i would trust their opinion :D :D

  14. What is the difference between listening to live kirtan and listening to kirtan on ipod?

I don't mean the obvious difference, but why does it take one's attention from Guru Sahib whereas live kirtan doesn't?

    i see what ur saying...

but i guess if live kirtan is going on then it wud be madness to be listening to ur ipod hunna?.........lol

  15. personally speaking, if there is a diwan, like kirtan, or akhand paath sahib going on and your in the darbar sahib, u shud turn your ipod off and listen/meditate, or do silent simran

i cant see anything wrong with it if you would be sitting in silence with your mind all over the place ........
