  1. Has anyone ever used this search engine before? It is well put together but I am not sure if it is legitimate. http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page
  2. I guess I should note that by lust I don't mean I am promiscuous. I am Married and we have a child together. I lust after my wife for sure! Sometimes other women to be honest. I feel guilt for lusting after other women, but it happens.
  3. Of course! After re-reading my original response, I realized I did not specify my understanding of that as well. I believe I try to live as moral a life as I can. I don't drink or smoke, I work hard and when I can, help in local hunger coalitions. Part of the reason why I found Sikhi so interesting though was because of the practitioners ability to master their passions. I have a difficult time controling my own especially lust and anger. I try to recognize it for what it is when it happens but it still happens. In the end it is my responsibility.
  4. Wonderful! Thank you jpsingh2! I had never heard of this method of reading according to raag and the corresponding time. When I first looked at the Guru Granth Sahib that I downloaded to my computer, I was a bit discouraged at the 1431 page number. Quite a daunting number of pages. Nevertheless, I committed to reading the whole thing. This method may help. I am working on keeping rehat. I keep unshorn hair and I am usually awake before dawn doing school work or reading. I love the concept behind the Kara being a voluntary reminder not to commit evil. By virtue of where I grew up, I have always carried a knife. I understand that there is plenty of other, possibly more important aspects. But, since I am learning slowly it would make sense that other things will come slowly as well.

I have always understood that this has to do with genetics and the amount of testosterone one has in their body. In fact, recently I read that plucking your hair does not affect growth from the folicle at all. I would not worry about how thick it is. What is being shown is the reflection of the will of 1. All that being said, I am not Amritardhi and I really don't know if my answer is valid. I can say from my experience after not cutting or plucking a single hair in two years that dilligent care is essential. I use coconut oil during the bitter cold (sometimes sub zero for several weeks) to prevent splits. Yoghurt is an interesting concept I could see working for skin discomfort as well.
  6. He and his organization have done a great deal of emotional damage to many different people in the US. They came several times to the area in which I grew up to protest the death of our Marines. I grew up close to a base, regardless of our views on current US policy, we respect those left behind. Thankfully, there were plenty of counter protestors to prevent the families from seeing the WBBC. Their work was simply shameful. They say incredibly hurtful things to goad the grieving or downtrodden into attacking. Right in front of the grieving with no shame. They have no respect or civility. Hopefully his family, will be free from his hate now and let the organization end.
  7. I started following Basics of Sikhi on Facebook as soon as I saw their videos. I really like the way he conveys the message and the street parchars really seem to be opening the public up to the subject in a positive manner. Do any of you think reading a biography of the Gurus and their times would help in studying? Should I focus mainly on the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji?
  8. Thank you all very much for replying with such helpful comments. I was very excited to start reading the Sri Guru Granth Sahib JI last night! I really enjoyed the Sikh answers website and GuruNanakAcademy as well. I was wondering if some of you might be able to elucidate some of the most common disagreements in Sikhi. I wasn't familiar with there being issues like this, so I looked it up and found some shocking videos of fights in Gurudwaras. I'm sure this is not indicative of Sikhs in general, but I think knowing these issues would help me make my own decisions about them while I learn. Also, there are certain words that I am not familiar with that come up while reading Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. An example would be the word Darbaar. I understand that is just a google search away, I would like to have some sort of word reference guide. I hope you don't become tired of my very basic questions. Know that I really appreciate the effort you are giving me.
  9. My name is Andrew. I live in the South East United States. My question is simple, but I feel I should offer a small amount of background to help our understanding. There is not a large community of Sikhs in SE-US, and I have had very little contact with practitioners. My first exposure to anything Sikh began when I stumbled upon a video about the events of 1984 and operation 'Blue Star' on YouTube. I have no recolection as to how I came upon that video, or which one it was. One of the side videos linked out to the Basics of Sikhi Channel. I really enjoyed most of what he had to say, and I was surprised to learn I agree with some of the basic tenets of Sikhi. I especially believe in selfless service, honoring yourself in the form of creation, and meditation on the force that created the universe. Now, if youve followed me this far, I will get to my question. I would like to have some more in depth information, but I have no idea where to start. What are your suggestions?
