  1. Who is stupid enough to buy these CD's? Don't blame the messengers, blame the people who fund them and should be the responsibility of the parents to discourage the youngsters from listening to this music.

Naive youngsters and naive women ...also those guys who want to feels the rest of the gayak's yearworth of gandh is washed away by this one CD , eh te halle vi dharmic geet gaunda ...eh nu galat na samajo keho ....blah blah blah ...

Yes I will hold this cynical daaana to book they know what they do and they still don't care , they don't care if they encourage drink, or drugs, or the dishonouring of innocent women . you want to be their protector ...fine get ready for the people spitting on you too

  2. Just out of curiosity, but if a person knows how to play Sarangi can they also play Saranda? they look and sound very similar

I talked to Surjit Singh of Raj academy as I bought via his organisation shop ...he said that once you learn Dilruba Saranda is easy to pick up because you have practised on a fretboard so have the note distances and finger techniques down I'm not as familiar with sarangi but I think it also has a fretboard... so in theory I feel judging by Singh ji's advice it would be a possible thing.

  3. I'm a Sikh too who wants to cut my hair because of maintaining my hair..I've kept my hair for the past 9 years and I'm 16 by the way..I don't really mind about people teasing me or the way I look but I just find it hard to comb and wash such long hair...I dont want to cut my hair because I know of its importance and I won't look like a Punjabi anymore but I still feel like cutting it too. This crossroad is really eating at me every single day.Im only keeping my hair for the sake of my parents because theyve done so much for me and I do not want to disappoint them...

Try keeping a large kanga with you to comb your hair my eldest son and my nephew have very heavy long hair and this has helped a lot , also look at changing your shampoo for something that deep cleans and has a matching conditioner it will help prevent your hair from getting overly dried out and hard to manage . Use Coconut or almond oil to keep them easier to comb try to get the best quality oil you can we use organic unprocessed coconut oil if you don't like the smell try Bajaj Almond drops. Try to stay away from baby oil as it is mineral oil which prevents natural function of hair (acts like an oil slick )and makes your scalp itchy and irritated if you sweat.

I wouldn't think keeping kesh makes one looks like a punjabi it might make you look like Guru Gobind SIngh Ji's son :biggrin2: which is way cooler

  4. Personally I like the old instruments and lament that it's no longer widely used as it once was. Sikh Sansthas should do focus on spread Raag Vidya in Tanti Saaj. But the thing about Harmonium is that it is very easy to learn and has allowed untold amounts of Sikhs to perform kirtan which otherwise they would not be able to. Harmonium is so easy to learn that you can literally learn it from the internet while that is not possible for stringed instruments which require an Ustaad to be physically present to teach you and even then it will take years and years to learn. That is not to say Vaaja can replace the beautiful sounds of stringed instruments, but if there is no Ustad near you, then surely there is nothing wrong in learning the Vaaja which many unmatched experts of Raag Music like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had not problem singing to.

Secondly, for those who don't have knowledge in Raag music, but sing with pyar in simple tunes like Brahmgiani Sant Attar Singh Mastuane wale who would do Kirtan to Shaine and Dholki with simple Dharnas. Would such kirtan not be parvaan at the darbar of Guru Sahib?

veer ji all bani is parvan ...just we need to revive the tools given us by Guru ji if wasn't important they would not have used raag in Guruji and developed tanti saaz specific to Gurmat Sangeet and this was stolen from us by The British missionaries because they could see how much Bani in the form of kirtan gave us an internal support. Darbar sahib was resistant to the introduction of the harmonium as it was considered very lowly instrument, was a much lesser thing than Guru ji's Saaz . Time has passed but we can still learn and propagate higher standards in kirtan ...we shouldn't be lazy Khalsa must forget comfort in all aspects of life to become the supermen/women Guru ji needs in His fauj. I mean even rabab, sarangi, dhumbi were used in Guru ji's darbar , can't get more simple than pure vocal kirtan even we can try to achieve that by practising raag vidhiya and then singing

I have invested in a dilruba and sarangi and hope to make it a family project to learn these instruments ...if others have come across good online resources for learning raag kirtan I would appreciate the sharing of that info with our sikh bandhap here, Thanks

  5. A Sikh must give Gurbani Top Priority.

There are a number of versions of history eg Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji's marriage & wives.

Who wrote Gurbani - Shiekh Fareed ji of Shakarganj or his tenth successor Shiekh Brahm (also known as Farid Sani).

    http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Sheikh_Farid

Some sects mention Char Sahibzade & then Punj Piyare in their Ardas.

They also say it is as per tradition.

No maryada, history, person is above Gurbani.

Therefore kids must be taught Gurmukhi & given Santhiya so that they can do Gurbani Veechaar.

Bhagat Farid ji , is the Farid whose lifestyle is described as part and parcel of his bani ...which is now GurBani so what new controversies do you want to start ?

Ardas is free form and changes ...the ardas that was before Guru Teg Bahadur ji's shaheedi is beshak different from now there is no controversy ...it is communication to hirdey from hirdey. Bus nam japo sabh kuch teek hoga ... that is what my dad's last sentence in this life was ....and he died japping nam for 48 hours no water no food no talking ...bhagti that's the name of this life

  6. Study: Kids Exposed To Religion Have A Harder Time Telling The Difference Between Reality And Fiction

    July 28, 2014 1:59 PM

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) New research claims children who are exposed to religion have more trouble differentiating between reality and fantasy in stories.

The study, which looked at 5- and 6-year-old childrens perceptions of a protagonist when reading three different types of stories (fantasy, religious and realistic), found that kids who went to church or were enrolled in parochial school (or both) had a more difficult time figuring out when a storys protagonist was fictional.

While all of the children, regardless of religious exposure, judged the protagonist in stories that included only realistic ordinary events to be a real person, the results were mixed for religious stories based on exposure to religion (for example, the story about Jesus turning water into wine).

And when it came to fantastical stories involving magic or the supernatural, children raised in secular households were much more likely to deem a protagonist fictional.

Exposure to religious ideas has a powerful impact on childrens differentiation between reality and fiction, not just for religious stories but also for fantastical stories, the researchers conclude.

The study is published in the latest issue of the journal Cognitive Science.

Yes I agree it has a big impact on my kids they can tell what is reality(moth, dharam raj, lakh churasi joon) from the fiction you guys want to peddle to them (sharab pio, assh karo, drugs kao, kuch nahin hona tuvhnu )

  7. This has happened despite the locals acknowledging Sikhs have never shown predjudice to the local people's children ... I feel that it is yet again outsiders shipped in to make trouble by scheming Masood

A riot broke out in Saharanpur among Sikhs and Muslims over a land dispute issue near the local Gurdwara on July 26th, 2014.

There has been 2 deaths and 19 injuries so far. Curfew has been imposed in the area.

  8. Yes!

that's so true people are forgetting the real essence of kirtan by not using raag! I remember hearing in the katha once that each and every raag has it own significance and helped people!

For example in the olden days people use hope and wait for it to by singing in a particular raag....

I would've loved to have a dilruba but my mums always moaning at me that I don't use the instruments we have at home (vaaja, tabla , dholki and not forgetting the TUMBI LOL) hence i'm starting off with learning the vajja and dholki, the other two i'm not too keen on! So now that i'm at it, does anyone know how to play the dholki ? :D

As jkv pen ji has mentioned I'm only getting started yet so I think I need to build up on my voice and especially confidence!

Because I've sang some traditional songs at ladies sangeets in family weddings but when it comes ta singing a shabad i'm not so good, I suppose its just the pressure of getting the shabad wrong!

anyway bhul chuk maaf ji and thank you! :)

forgot to mention gora also has raag vocal practice vids ..

  9. Yes, you should talk to him about the picture and tell him how you felt. I repeat, tell him what you felt, ok?

Call me naive, but is you father's naked picture taken alone or with someone else ie female? If his picture is on his own then why should this pose any problems? Sometimes in India when we take a bath on a pilgrimage we take pictures of our relatives or friends in the sarowars, don't we? Is it not one of those pictures then? I am confused! If it is a picture that is not decent then who shot the picture and why did he leave it in the family pictures? Ask. I can't fathom why would a sensible father leave these photographs unguarded and exposed. I am sure he did not expect it to be seen by his own children even if accidently. You mention your 11 year so that means your father is really a grandfather now.

Just say to your father, dad, I came across some old photos of yours and this is what I saw. Say this in privacy and he might be able to explain to you better and also inform you whether you should be telling your mother or not. Also, your poor mum must be that age where she has reared her family and has settled into a quiet life. So be careful as to what you divulge to her or should divulge to her. I think it is not only your 11 year old and your siblings that need to be protected but you need to protect your mother from being hurt as well.

First find out if your father is aware of this picture then ask if your mum already knows and then decide what you wish to do next, but talk it out with your father first as man to man and son and father.

    Good luck.

Look be realistic people no 11 year old male or female is going to be confronting their father over dodgy pics ...go to your Mum explain to her what you saw and did , then ask her to handle it . The father will get angry , be dismissive at the least or violent at the worst do you really think you are giving great advice to place a child in that situation. The mother has a right to know if she is unaware of the existence of these photos so she can fix her relationship if needs be and confront her partner for the need of this gandh. Obviously the child knows that these pics are not right so stop quizzing or making excuses . It is an adult situation and should remain so ...

Please talk to your mum she will know what to do ... you are a young person who doesn't need this stress and heartache ...I am glad you were so intelligent and protected your younger brothers and sisters from these images, now trust your Mum and tell her what's going on

Non -news ...just the same old tired studies drawn upon by atheists to show how religion warps people ... miracles are called such because they are not normal occurences...anyway back to nam jap

  11. Mahaan Beadbi ORGANISED by the Committee at this so called "Sports Mela" pfft, it was dancing and giddha mela more like!

how is is this beadbhi ? the poster says that it is a sports day and I cannot see Maharaj di saroop anywhere , it does look like it is being run in tents outside . Please clarify or chilll.

  12. For the record :cool2:

I used the word Taleban not coined the term K-h-a-l-i-b-a-n.....which is generously being used by yourself :nono: and also your dear friend Kamalroop & his associates.

There is a difference in me condemning senseless violence and you painting all Khalistanis with the SAME brush :rolleyes2: :rolleyes2: :rolleyes2:

    veer ji ,

I think that you didn't really think it through anyhow ...taliban have killed schoolchildren and school teachers, beaten family's menfolk to death for perceived collabaration, which in reality means non=cooperation to their edicts . Forcing girls of very young ages to get married to them and then beating and abusing them . They destroy hospitals deny healthcare to the womenfolk, imprison women in the house, forbid them from leaving the house with out a man accompanying them . all this and more besides none of the agnalis have done that I think , true they have overly punished wrong doing by youths and others but i have the belief that simply talking to the agnalis taksal guys and getting them to talk more hit less can solve the problem . Labelling the same as those scummy individuals who make human life impossible for many is not productive or wise.

  13. Johnny Veer,

Also think this from this perspective - the land dispute in Saharanpur was on for the past 16 years, why this dispute turned into riots by politicians NOW only when SFJ created a online petition raising voice against a genocide of the Muslim community in India, thus raising some hopes of 2 minorities getting together who have met similar GENOCIDE by the same majority?

The Indian news report I watched earlier today states that the land was never an issue because the gurudwara has held the land for twenty years and has the only paperwork these muslims braying for blood are just gunfodder for the congress cause .

  14. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh,

if you have access to a dilruba you can follow this guy's lessons on youtube he explains very clearly about technique , tips on treatment of bow and instrument .

wholegreaterthansum is the channel name good luck and enjoy your practice

  15. Just for the record guys, I didn't invented this 'khaliban' term. However I do support the usage of term in violent bullying extremist cases where there is a strong evidence of sikhs regardless (from all walks of life) using violence, intimidation, online verbal threats, fascist bullying behaviour to demonize, oppress the public weak, miniroity who does not agree with their idealogy or have difference of opnions with them.
Personally, I would use this word sensibly/responsibly as it could reverse demonize sikhs as whole. I am well aware of ramifications of any such term can easily fall into stereotypes ie- n word in black community among others.
Rest assured I would personally use this term at rare exceptional circumstances where I (my Sikh conscience) clearly feel if other (be it any view including those who i don't agree with- I may not follow your approach but i will defend your right to express it or practise- sri guru tegh bahudar sidhant) are being opressed/demonized/villified/bullied just for having airing different views/opnions by others.
As a Sikh and as a parent, i have moral responsiblity to ensure youths are not swaying into fanaticism rather following gurmat balanced sidhant- Bhai kahun ko deit nehn Nehn bhai manat aan ||
I am here to stick to this gursikhi asool- Bhai kahun ko deit nehn Nehn bhai manat aan, will try various awareness campaign methods to raise awareness to adapt - Bhai kahun ko deit nehn Nehn bhai manat aan instead of bullying, villification, demonization, violence, intimidation fear mongering approach used by other communities.
On a side note: Guruvah veer ji have used similiar to express its disguist on this following video as well:
These radicalized vigilante ajnala talebans are seriously doing very damaging actions to the panth's reputation....just the other day I say an ajnali showing how great "sewa" they are doing beating up people on his FB account.
have preview of the account here:
If this isnt addressed soon, global media is going to portray Sikhs like how they portray deranged radicalized Muslims!

don't you think using those terms yourselves is just handing it prepackaged for others to critcise all sikhs ...remember we are all terrorists if we are amritdhari and wear our panj kakars already...thank carefully discuss indiviuals and their actions not banding people under labels .

  16. If that is the case then Kohli should come out with it......as its sangats money and he isn't doing us as sangat any favours by hiding all of this......just my opinion.

Another opinion - even if he comes out with it, what is really going to happen/change, probably nothing, i.e we all already know what is going there, but nothing happens.

his best bet it to leak it outwards in foreign countries first so gurudwarey can stop money flow immediately and demand answers .
