Our lot have been putting their 'faith' into this perceived importance of 'human rights' by the global community since the 80s from what I've seen by my own eyes.

If after all those decades and a complete lack of any real results, we aren't thinking that this is seriously 'misplaced faith' I fear we'll just keep going around the 'silly merry-go-round' again. We should at least be astute enough to recognise when we are being fobbed off by now.

Which is why we need to stop relying on other's to do our bidding, we need to put ourselves in positions where we can make change but here's the problem, every time someone get's to a position like that our community very quickly make sure they are dragged back down, Mp's like Tan Dhesi are prime examples of this, whatever he does won't be enough for the community (but in his case he's one of the few that does ask question's like the one above in parliament).

What happened in the 80's took place in a very different time, it was a lot easier to hide the shady stuff governments did back then, in today's age it's a lot more difficult, one tweet from a singer proved that weeks back when the ugly reality that is the Indian government came to light (and all the tweet said was that we should talk bout what's happening), it's easy to become jaded and loose hope that nothing will change but at some point something will give.

I don't think that works, I've seen it tried over the years (like with French wine) but people essentially want what they want and separate it from politics. I mean we still probably all get cheap Chinese manufactured stuff, despite them being positioned as the global evil of our current time.

And I think if anybody is going to 'veto' things, pharmaceuticals manufactured at a rate that is massively lower than if they had been manufactured in the west, would be the last thing on the list.

I think people in general seem largely unconcerned with global 'human rights' in this day and age (if ever they were concerned and not just using it for political leverage).

My meaning is as an alternative to government intervention, i agree, people are people, they're self centred at the end of the day and want the latest iPhone and don't care if the kid you made it get's pain £5 a month, but you have to have faith in something.

@Kcmidlands your bang on , its all about money nothing else.

Its also interesting how they state India is a sovereign country , leave all matters to them as they can deal with it. Everyone else stay out.  Yet they cause atrocities left , right and center yet no one talks. On the media , you had mainstream news about BLM,Egypt,Russia, first Mosque to provide COVID Vaccines et.. But no coverage of the farmers protest on mainstream News, where GOI have :-

    1) Arrested approx. 143 people. In particular one 80 yr old and one 70 yr old. Arrested people whilst they were having lungar(food)

    2) Over 170 deaths , where some have been suicides and shootings by the Police

    3) Journalists arrested , cracking down on news medias such as newsclick

    4) RSS thugs bought in to cause violence

    5) human rights violations ( no access to toilets/bathroom/barricaded in like sheep)

the list goes on and on …...

I never understood the GOI judicial system , it seems as if they make it up as they are going along  and all they are doing is watching video footage and arresting people at random.

Surely international pressure can help put pressure on GOI ?

The thing you have to remember is that mainstream news agencies (like the BBC) have a narrative they want to feed the public, i remember the week before the first national lockdown last March in the UK, i was going to work on the train everyday and nearly had a breakdown because i kept watching the news, my wife made me turn it off so i could get my head together, this is what they do a lot, they feed you a version of events that they want you to believe, that's their editorial judgement at work, they've done the same with the farmers protest.

If there had been violence at the protests and, let's say, the instigators were Muslim, then the media over here would be all over it because it fit's in with their narrative to show one particular race as bad, in the case of Sikhs it's a little more difficult because the majority of the time we're on the tv we are portrayed as good people who help others, in India however, their media narrative is that all the protestors are Khalistani Sikh terrorist's and that's what they're trying to sell to the world and failing miserably at it and now they've arrested a climate change campaigner over there as a scapegoat for Greta Thunberg over a one page google doc that allegedly tells the farmers how to protest.

India have become a manufacturing powerhouse, they produce half the worlds drugs and vaccines, the majority of the worlds paracetamol production is based there, the government over there know this and are well aware that if countries mess with them they'll cut off supplies but it shouldn't stop other countries calling them out, failing that, the general public have more power than any government, they need to start vetoing things made over there,

The £23billion Trade Deal with India

India will use this deal to pressure the UK whenever an opponent of India's politics speaks up. That deportation legislation the UK passed last year (or it may have been 2019) that people assumed will target Muslims will also be used to silence non-Muslim Indian opponents in the UK. Doesn't look very good for UK Sikhs who have aspirations of speaking out against India. They can easily fabricate charges of incitement to terror. Balls.

Welcome to post-Brexit Britain, enjoy your stay, people need to think before they speak now (which, to be fair, they should anyway).

The flip side of this is the Government doesn't get it all their own way, they had a bill over turned that allowed them to freely trade with anyone that has violated human rights in the house of lords, for example, if China is found to have violated the human rights of Uyghurs then Britain has to seek permission from the supreme court before trading with them, the same could in theory go for India (we all know what they're human rights record's are like).

    I agree with you.

I'd also like to take this time to laugh at all the proud 'sons of farmers' I've met over the years who've been obnoxiously banging on about their 'special bundh-yaari' with the angrezi quom.

I hope even the most dimwitted amongst you can now finally see where you truly stand, and how much your 'friends' really value you in your own time of need.....something you should've twigged a long time ago in my opinion (like at partition), but I guess some peoples REALLY are slow learners.

I salute your forefather's sacrifices for these people ....<cough, cough........>

Very few countries will openly criticize another country, especially one they trade with, it's only recently that the UK passed comment on China's treatment of Uyghurs, at most they could say that they agree with the right to peaceful protest, i don't think they have any sway beyond that, this is the same government who have let a British citizen languish without any concrete evidence in a prison in India for over 3 years, his case has been bought up time and time again and they've done nothing.

I think this is about being backed into a corner because they messed up Brexit and have to beg for trade deals because they don't have the international power they once had in the "Glorious day's of Empire" but i do agree with you about "Indian" people still harking back to the glory day's because they have been brainwashed over generations to believe that the "White" man was our saviour.

    What's Rees-Mogg basically saying here......

What he's saying is, loosely translated is, they aren't going to anything because they've just signed a 23 billion deal with India and they don't really care what happens to people over there they don't want to criticise or upset the Indian government in any way because it may affect their trade deal, okay, that's not what he said but that's what will happen.

I saw the Naseeruddin Shah interview this morning, he's probably one of the most level headed actors over there, i remember him last year when he ripped into Kangana Ranaut on live TV for glamorising the death of Sushant Singh for her own means.

'Bracelets' Ranaut is a self promoting spokesperson all matters Indian especially if there is a hint of  Modi incompetency in  the air i.e. all the time.

Latest Greta Thunberg is getting charged with crimes by Delhi Police they are currently typing up a First Incident Report FIR. after the RSS/BJP IT cell called her a khalistani on twitter so braindead its comical

I'm sure Greta is trembling in her boots.

If a celeb in the West tweeted what Kangna tweeted, she would be investigated. Only in a 3rd world dump like India can people get away with tweets implying genocide.

Yes and no, the like's of Farage, Katie Hopkins, Tommy Robinson and plenty of others pushed the boundaries of social media pretty far before getting booted off (apart from Farage), India is where America was a few years ago, the rise of the right wing is apparent, people are willing to believe in the fake narrative spewed by the government, the only difference here is it's being endorsed by celebrities over there because if they go against it they're pretty much finished.

The less attention people like Kangna is given the better, hew narrative is formed so she keeps the attention on her so she get's noticed, she will no doubt end up in politics in one form or another, it's not like you need any qualifications to become a politician over there, they have a tea boy in charge who lied about his past....

Well it's got people talking. Since she tweeted it many human rights activists have tweeted it, including that climate extinction girl Greta, the humans right watch have done articles on it. Other artists have tweeted it.

Yh, it did cross my mind, she has been rumoured to have connections with dodgy people for years now.

But either way, atleast it's got people talking.

India has for far to long been torturing its citizens and covering it up with "Incredible India"

It's also dragged the Bollywood elite out to defend their country,  who in turn are getting roasted on Twitter, Greta Thunberg getting called a Khalistani terrorist by a BJP nut job was a particular highlight.

I owe you an apology! My sincere sorry!

When i said about KA was context, why help when we don't have economic power like others do, , whilst ours are suffering and no other group will help us. Also when you have certain type muslims when they're making fun, after our community. But not eveyone is the same. Also wish we'd be more known than providing 'free food'... But its all within what we can afford and to do. Dont have billion dollars but having that soft 'power' image KA did  rubbed off Indian hindvstas nationalists and media etc

Other Sikh charities should join together and create one big Sikh institution, where you have diff Organisations doing different things, like KA with langar helping whoever in needs, and another charity teaching Sikhi etc

But deeply sorry ! Bhul chuk maf!

No apology necessary, we're all on a journey to learn new things and are all entitled to our own opinions.

A couple of points, when our people (Sikhs) suffer, we tend to help ourselves, i don't really think we rely on other communities which is a good and bad thing because everyone needs someone at some point, there are a lot of grass roots charities and organisations that do help on a local level in Punjab it's just that they don't do it publicly, they just get on a do it, a few families from the school my youngest children go to have moved to India to help at the Mata Sahib Educational Trust, they provide free education for children.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being known as a religion that provides Free Food for all, in this day and age when childhood poverty is at an all time high things like this matter, providing free food is a stepping stone into educating people about Sikhi, KA do a lot more than just provide free food, the proof is in things like the "Godi" media in India trying to label them a terrorist organisation the result of that being huge companies like Westmill foods (they own Elephant Atta amongst others) pulling all their advertising an sponsorship from channels like ZeeTV because they don't want to be associated with them for spreading fake right wing news.

As far as Sikh organisations getting together, i think most of them are linked together and send people in the right direction when asked.

My gf and I met at University 4 years ago. We plan to get engaged and then married within the next 2 years.

My gf feels strongly that she doesn't want to move into my family home with my parents after marriage and feels we should get our own home ASAP. She has met my mother and gets along with her well. My mum wishes for a close relationship with her, but we all know how mother in law and daughter in law relationships can get.

I feel financially the best decision would be to stay with my parents long enough to save for a deposit for a home we actually want rather than settling for less, just to get away.

I was wondering if I could get some advice from the sangat about what Sikhi says about this and what they feel the right thing to do would be.

    WJKK WJKF

As someone who's been married for nearly 20 years I'll give you some simple advice, take all your plan's, your ideas about marriage and your presumptions and throw them out of the window, where you are now compared to where you will be in 10 years time are completely different places.

I got married and lived with my family, i had to move out because the new job i had was too far to commute, my wife loved it (although she had no issue living with my family), it meant she could run things how she wanted, so, a fair few years later our everyday conversation is about regret and how we shouldn't have moved away, we've been through some really (and i mean really) tough time's over the years and had we have lived with my family it would had made those times a little easier to bear but hey, spilt milk analogy and all.

In your case, sit down and talk about the present and why she feel's that way instead of making plans for the future (although they are just as important), from a financial point of view your thinking is on the right path, look, the most important thing is to be open and honest both with your GF and your parent's, take it from someone who's been through the mill, it will save you many sleepless nights in the future.

There is nothing wrong with any Sikh organisation or Gurdwara helping the local community when situations occur where people need help. It is when KA run off the out of the way areas where there is no Sikh community and expend Sangat's money. The Rohingya issue was a case in point, charirties received millions in donations for western countries andf govts and kA just duplicated their work.

What KA is doing in Delhi is good but it would be also better if the spent their resources to look after the families of farmers who committed suicide as well as offering financial counselling to stop farmers from getting into debt.

I agree in the most part, i think they do need to choose where they direct their effort's more carefully but i don't agree with wanting them to just direct their efforts just towards the Sikh community, they are a Humanitarian organisation and by definition they go where help is needed, I've mentioned this in the other thread about them as well.

You also have to bear in mind that it's not just Sikh's who donate money to them, it's now people from every background. The comments in the other thread have proved that this is a debate that will go on and on, simple solution is donate to those whose cause you agree with, if you want to help out farmer's families and a grass roots level I'm sure there are organisations that do that.

  15. I'm pretty close to turning Vegan, the older i get the more by body disagrees with certain things, diary is pretty much at the top of the list, I've reduced my paneer intake (no easy thing in a Punjabi household) because i started getting severe headaches when eating it too often, i've gone over to plant/nut based milks, the only problem is Gulab Jamuns, damn that milk powder.

Now this is about as random as they come - and I should post it in my 'random historical photos' thread  but they've taken my rights away to post photos on old threads - but it's kinda weird because I've had this photo in my collection for years (dont ask - I collect tidbits about the history of London. Sad - I know ☹️ but never noticed before what kind of cuisine this restaurant was serving. 'Sikh Cuisine'. This one is from the 1960s in Brook Street in upper crust Mayfair just around the corner from the former American Embassy. Got me thinking though - with the early 1900s British studies on the Sikh Diet and the 1960s published data on how Sikh children born in the UK were the tallest and strongest of all children was the idea and concept of a 'Sikh diet'  so embedded in the conscience of the British public back in the 1960s that it was common and rewarding for restaurants to advertise themselves as 'Sikh Cuisine' restaurants?   Hmmm....definately a thought to ponder there.

    sikh cuisine.jpg

It's not sad collecting stuff like this, some historical stuff is fascinating, you could spend hours looking up stuff about a single photo, I think the "Sikh Cuisine" here has very little to do with Sikhism itself but just a description of the food, it wasn't classed as "Punjabi Food" until the mid to late 70's, my dad came here in the early 60's, i showed him this photo, he said these were aimed at the "white people" which kind of makes sense.

Here's a little more information about this restaurant (and when i sat little, i mean it in the literal sense)

What it says is "No employees earn over 60k for this charity", your takeaway from that is 10 employees earn £60,000 each, that really is clutching at straws, looking through their accounts from last year the annual salary bill comes to about £180,000, if that's split between 10 people then either they have a lot of underpaid staff or they just earn normal salaries, for comparison, it may be worth your while looking up what other charities pay their bosses e.g. The British Council.

Surely there's more productive things that could be done rather than constantly go after Khalsa Aid, maybe look up some of the allegations leveled at The Baru Sahib Trust or something.
