I don't agree with you view that there is no clannish mentality in Tarkhans. The Ramgarhia designation was invented in  order give a higher caste status to the Tarkhans. Tarkhans hold the same views as Jats with regard to inter caste marriage. The level of violence that a Tarkhan family could enact would be much less than a Jat family but if the Tarkhan family involved with Chamkila were influential then there would have a whole host of linkages and favours then could have drawn on both to assassinate Chamkila as well as any subsequent cover up.

There is no doubt that the Kharkoos had Chamkila in their cross hairs, 1988 was the start of the Samaj Sudhar movement when the Kharkoos attempted to reform society and get rid of the ills which the Indian state had made the norm in Punjabi society. Khalsa Panchayats had been set up to try court cases, the villages were warned to not involve the state and its functionaries in any disputes that were taking place in the villages. Families of husbands whose wives had been left  for many years and lived with their own families were warned to bring them back to live in their families. In that atmosphere Chamkila would certainly have been a target as his type of songs with their innuendo were seen as having bought immorality into society.

Given the gand singers like Gurdas Mann has bought in since the 90s, you can just imagine what gand Chamkila would have bought in had he been alive today.

I think only Babbar Khalsa ever did that, the rest of the Kharku groups were mainly fighting on secular rights, while Babbar Khalsa’s fight was more theocratic.

I know a prominent Sikh from your East London who was in-house Kirtani and Kathakaar in one of the local Gurdwaras around 20 years ago - of 'low caste' background. Apparently, fell for a local young Tarkhaan girl. He wanted rishtaa. The girl's family in India checked out his family and thought it was an insult!

    Aren't Tarkhans a "backward caste"?

There's less likely chance of a male spouse becoming Sikh if marrying Sikh female, especially if non-Indian background and/or Western raised.

In the past many Hindu women marrying Sikh became Sikh and raised their kids as Sikh.

Most having Anand Karaj in Gurdwara are not Sikh in mentality and just want to do it for 'tradition' and wedding photos. That's the difference and that's why so many are opposed to the Anand Karaj between 'Sikh' and non Sikhs

Jasprit Bumrah a Sikh from Gujarat earlier this year married a lady of Hindu name. Not sure if it should have been Anand Karaj, but I don't know what the attitude is in India

There's a 50% chance of a Sikh man and non-Sikh woman raising Sikh kids, while if there's a Non-Sikh man and Sikh woman there's almost 0% chance of them raising Sikh kids. Either way the non-Sikh shouldn't be in an anand karaj.

    It should be prestigious.

One factor I didn't consider is how easily a career could be under threat if malicious false gossip/allegations is made against a Granthi which could ruin this reputation and end their career.

Doctors and lawyers could also get “their reputation and career ruined because of false gossip/allegations”

    It's not ideal.

It would be better if they married into Indian Punjabi Sikh familiies.

In the past when most Khatri Sikhs lived in Pakistan, a lot of Khatris also intermarried within the family rather than marrying people from far away and non-khatris. They were also open to marrying with Hindus.

That's why we should always be aware of our local sangat, and not get absorbed into mainstream culture.

Know the funny thing? Elders teach teens "When choosing partner look at their Nitnem, seva and family values..." When coming of age? "A boy!? What's his education?where he work?" Lol no mention of if he does Nitnem, Gurudwara goer, veg...

Of course I write from my own experience and it's not necessary everywhere or average. But over 40 proposal for Amritdhari girl? Facing parents/ elders questions? I know wha I been through...

There's a lot less amritdhari girls than amritdhari guys, even if we are practicing Roti Beti Di Sanjh, amritdhari women can pick the best Singhs of the flock. If the Amritdhari guys aren't strict on marrying Amritdhari only, then you still get people wanting the other qualities.

Do the Pakistani Sikh population just intermarry, or do any marry into Indian Punjabi families ? Any that marry into the West?

Not confident anyone here will know much, but I'm interested. And what background are these Pakistani Sikh from - mostly urban ? Mostly rural ? Or a mix

The Pakistani Sikhs are more open to marrying extended family.

If in UK, you're highly educated and have income of about £18k (after tax) then a flood of opportunities will come your way. Tell parents your wishes, they will ask around their Pindu friends you will b sorted.

If education not high, you're not Amritdhari but have a decent job you may get a chance still.

If education is low, no decent job and yer Amritdhari seeking Amritdhari girl... FORGET IT! Go Punjab and get married. Yes it'll b costly and yes, you will have t deal with cultural clashes between the two of you.

Cultural clashes aren’t really worth it.

I thought Amritdhari girls had less choice on partners than non-Amritdharis

Girls whether they are Amritdhari or not in general have the same things they are looking for, better not to be foolish about it. There might be more of looking for religious values, but other than that, the basics are still important.
