  5. http://www.panthic.org/news/125/ARTICLE/4959/2009-05-08.html Friday 8th of May 2009 Kanwarpal Singh, Dal Khalsa Plea to Sikh voters: Defeat those Sikh candidates who had approached Sirsa dera for votes * Dal Khalsa lodged complaint at Akal Takht against all Sikh politicians including Captain Amrinder Singh for hobnobbing with excommunicated pseudo-godman Amritsar- Taking a dig at Sikh politicians including Captain Amrinder Singh who have been hobnobbing with Dera Sirsa head to seek his blessings and votes, the Dal Khalsa urge the Sikh electorate to ensure the defeat of all such 'violators' of Akal Takht directive in the ensuing LS elections. The party president H S Dhami and Kanwar Pal Singh said the present lot of politicians of both the parties (read SAD and Congress) has abdicated the path of religious ideology and righteousness in their pursuit to gain votes. Party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh, who met Jathedar Akal Takht Sahib Gaini Gurbachan Singh at his residence today morning for 30 minutes, apprised him of the pain and anguish the Sikh Diaspora has been feeling because of a new low these politicians have touched. “We had registered our complaint in writing against all those Sikh politicians who had brazenly not only disobeyed the Akal Takht directive of May 20 2007 but has also committed sacrilege by lending recognition to a person who had proclaimed himself as a "living guru" in sharp contrast to Sikh principles and ethos. "Although the violation of Akal Takht edict was not new but what has disturbed and upset us was that a few handful to Sikh politicians were bowing before the likes of Gurmeet Ram Rahim who have been mocking at basic fundamentals of Sikh religion on one hand and challenging the 'guruship' of Guru Granth Sahib on the other". Those who had approached Sirsa dera for votes must be defeated as their act tantamount to ‘turning back to eternal Guru Granth Sahib’, said they. "If they had turned their backs to Guru Granth Sahib, then Sikhs should seal their political career by saying big ‘NO’ to them". Giving a clarion call to Sikh electorate they said let us reject all those candidates who had shown disrespect to ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ by bowing their heads before so-called godmen. “It is the moral duty of devout Sikhs to rebut and defeat this unprincipled lot as they had tried to undermine the concept of Shabad-Guru. The complaint lodged by the organization includes names of Gurcharan Singh Galib (Ludhiana), Sher Singh (Ferozepur), Raninder Singh (Bathinda), Jagmeet Singh Brar (Ferozepur), Sukhvinder Singh Danny (Faridkot) beside Capt Amrinder Singh for seeking ashirvaad (support) from the excommunicated and controversial pseudo-saint.
  6. Friday 8th of May 2009 Manvir Singh Khalsa UK—Only recently Sikhs were devastated knowing that Bow Gurdwara in East London had been burnt down and Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee's pavitar saroops had been reduced to ash in the fire. Sadly, in the past few days there have been two more Gurdwara fires in the UK. Aftermath of the Manchester Gurdwara fire On Wednesday 6th May at 11.30pm, Gurdwara Sri Guru HarKrishan Sahib Ji in Greater Manchester caught fire. The ground floor offices and the first floor (the Langar Hall) of the Gurdwara Sahib were destroyed. An investigation is under way but the fire is not thought to be suspicious. Thankfully, with Guru jee's kirpaa, the Darbaar Sahib and Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee's saroops were left untouched by the fire. Scene from the Doncaster Gurdwara fire Coincidentally the next day, a Gurdwara Sahib in Doncaster caught fire after a large quantity of plastic pallets went up in flames at the trading estate where the Gurdwara in situated. The fire-fighters spent two hours tackling the blaze and are treating the incident as suspicious. It is thought the blaze started after a number of plastic loading pallets belonging to the Big Red Shed specialist distributors company were set alight in an area between the Gurdwara Sahib and another building. So far there have been no reports whether the Darbaar Sahib and Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee's saroops have been affected by the fire or not. Hearing this sad news, it should be a wakeup call for the Sikh community to rethink about the safety and protection of our Gurdwara Sahibs. What fire precautions are in place at our local Gurdwara Sahibs? These tragic incidents can be avoided with forward-thinking and planning.

  15. Gurdwara 1 Huge blaze destroys Sikh temple More than 70 firefighters tackled a blaze that destroyed a Sikh temple in Greater Manchester. The blaze ripped through a multi-use building in the Strangeways area of Cheetham Hill at 2330 BST on Wednesday. The ground floor offices and the first floor, which was home to the temple, were gutted in the fire. Firefighters tackled the blaze throughout the night. An investigation is under way but the fire is not thought to be suspicious. A fire service spokeswoman said: "There was a partial collapse in the first floor ceiling and firefighters had to enter the building wearing breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze." Bury Road is closed while crews dampen the blaze down. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/8039526.stm Gurdwara 2 Suspicious fire Published Date: 07 May 2009 FIREFIGHTERS who spent two hours tackling a blaze in Hexthorpe are treating the incident as suspicious. Four fire engines attended the fire between the Sikh Temple and the Big Red Shed distribution centre on Cherry Tree Road, Hexthorpe at 4.57pm on Sunday. Firefighters from Adwick, Doncaster and Edlington spent two hours tackling the flames. It is thought the blaze started after a number of plastic loading pallets belonging to the Big Red Shed specialist distributors company were set alight.

  19. Razing of Sikh Homes by Taliban, Plight of Sikhs from Swat and Tribal Areas Friday 1st of May 2009 Kanwalpal Singh, Dal Khalsa with contributions by Panthic Weekly Staff Dal Khalsa conveys community's concern to Pak government through its High Commission (New Delhi) AMRITSAR SAHIB - The Dal Khalsa has written a letter to Pak High Commission in New Delhi to convey community’s concern on the dismal plight of Sikhs of Swat, who are under attack from Talibans and at the same time, has expressed solidarity with the Pakistan in its fight against Taliban forces. The Indian media has reported that Taliban militants have demolished 11 homes of members of the minority Sikh community in Aurakzai tribal region after they failed to pay jiziya or a tax levied on non-Muslims. In a communiqué address to Deputy High Commissioner and sent through fax, the party secretary for political affairs Kanwar Pal Singh has urged the Pak government to take stringent and stern measures against culprits who have attempted to terrorize the Sikhs by demolishing their houses in Pakistan’s Aurakzai tribal region. The letter points that the incident has disturbed the Sikhs world over. The recent attack was indicator of the difficult times ahead for the Sikhs over there. Sikhs in Pakistan were a tiny minority. Unlike other countries, their role and presence was negligible in countries polity, reads the letter. The letter further says that despite the historical hangover, both Sikhs and Muslims of this region have strong cultural bonds and over recent years the process of reconciliation between both the sides has been undertaken with results beneficial to the Sikhs and Muslims. Expressing hope that the Pak government would do its best to ensure the safety of lives and properties of Sikhs of Swat and other tribal areas in future, the spokesman of the Sikh group observed that the recent attack on Sikhs was a part of the larger design of Talibans to embarrass the Pakistan government. Sharing the grief of the Pakistani people that too have borne the brunt of the violent attacks launched by Talibans in the recent past, he expressed solidarity with Pakistan in its on-going fight against the Taliban forces. Sikh Community Victimized by Talibanization of Pakistan LAHORE, Pakistan (KP)—While the whole country is facing extreme conditions as militancy seems to over-take Pakistan’s control, the Sikh Community has faced the hardest conditions of all. Less than 20 days after being allowed to return home, the Sikhs in the Lower Orakzai agency were once again forced out as the Taliban militants demanded Rs. 15 million once again as tax. According to Taliban men who occupied the Sikh residences and businesses, all-non Muslims must pay Jaziya as poll tax. This tax is in accordance to the Sharia law which must be paid by Sikhs. The Sikh Community in Orakzai is in a very difficult condition after being derived out of their homes. Most have been forced to take shelter in Hangu and Kohat as the community members have been unable to pay the demanded tax. The Taliban has already demolished eleven homes of the Sikhs and taken over shops and businesses belonging to the Sikhs. No discussions have yet taken place to extend the deadline to pay the tax or to lower it.
  20. Friday 1st of May 2009 Kanwarpal Singh, Dal Khalsa AMRITSAR SAHIB - The Dal Khalsa expresses its solidarity with Tamil people in Sri Lanka and urges the United Nations to intervene and save thousands of innocent Tamils trapped in the war-torn island. In a statement Kanwar Pal Singh, Secretary for Political Affairs, said we were really moved by the suffering of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. It’s ironic that the Sri Lankan government was getting away with broad daylight murder and mayhem while the international community has failed to take action to mitigate the misery and suffering of the thousands in Sri Lanka. The beleaguered people of Tamil Eelam continue to face worst type of hardships and bloodbath and the Sri Lanka government has made killings and disappearances part of State policy violating UN resolutions and norms, said he. He condemned the continuous support of Indian state to Sri Lankan Government and said it was against the overall peace and stability in the sub-continent. To escape from indictment on many counts from the international community against the use of prohibited weapons to human rights abuses, the Sri Lankan state has systematically kept the international media and the Amnesty International activists out of the war zone. "We urge the international community to come to the rescue of displaced Tamils as report of the exodus of more than 100,000 Tamils is a matter of deep concern". "We have strong belief that irrespective of the outcome of the current “army operation” in Sri Lanka the struggle for Tamil Homeland will remain alive because the roots of the insurgency lie in real discrimination against Tamils. The genuine struggle of the Tamil people for freedom can never be eradicated by force of arms".
  21. 23rd Khalistan Day Observed in Punjab Friday 1st of May 2009 Panthic Weekly News Bureau * Dal Khalsa vows to continue the struggle for Sikh state with same spirit and optimism sans violence * Calls to defeat the BJP and the Congress for being anti-Punjab and anti-minority * Slams CBI for becoming tool in the hands of the ruling elite thus completely loosing its relevance, meaning and credibility * Ridicules attempts by SAD (Badal) and Akali Dal (Delhi) to make the Sikhs subservient of either BJP or Congress Hoshiarpur, Punjab - Spelling out its agenda to uphold the distinct identity of the Sikh people and earn a respectable place for Punjab in the comity of nations, the Dal Khalsa today vowed to bring a change in the corrupt Sikh political culture and not to bend, either by force or allurement. The resolution to this effect was passed at a meeting of party office bearers held here today to mark the commencement of 23rd anniversary of “Khalistan Declaration Day”. Later on, addressing a press conference, the leaders of the group reiterated their demand and dream for a sovereign Sikh state. It is pertinent to mention that 23 years ago on this day a five-member Panthic Committee constituted by Sarbat Khalsa convened by Damdami Taksal passed a resolution (Gurmattâ) at Akal Takht Sahib favoring the independence of Punjab. If the RSS-BJP can openly talk of formation of a Hindu Rashtra, why should Sikhs be devoid of their right to a separate state, questioned Mr Dhami, while addressing the media persons. Flanked by other party leaders including Satnam Singh, Kanwarpal Singh, Dr Manjinder Singh and Baldev Singh, he said they would continue with the struggle with the same spirit and optimism sans violence. Paying tributes to all those Sikhs who died while fighting for the cause of sovereign Sikh state, they took a dig at turncoats of the movement and said when those who have embraced death for its sake are remembered, no offence appears more unforgivable than a compromise over it. They said the sentiments of sovereignty that was strengthened by the army attack on Darbar Sahib 25 years ago have not been buried with the passage of time and change in political scenario. There may not be any public manifestation of such sentiments but all Sikhs desire to be live in sovereigny. Exhorting the Sikh masses to defeat the Congress and the BJP in the ensuing elections to the Lok Sabha, the leaders said the track record proves beyond any doubt that both were two sides of the same coin having ideologically the same foundations vis-à-vis minority aspirations are concerned. They said during elections their rank and file would try to create awareness among masses about dangerous policies of the BJP and the Congress. They said first it was the Congress which undermined Sikhs for over 40 years but now Akalis (Badal) had brought in the BJP to “harm and deceive the Sikhs.'' Instead of banking upon the support of Panthic groups, Akalis were leaning on the clutches of the BJP, they rued. The move by the SGPC and DSGPC to campaign in favour of candidates of the SAD and the Congress respectively has drawn flak from the radical quarters. They said both the religious institutions have been marred by politics. In sharp contrast to their original role and responsibility, the leaders have made their respective institutions as ‘extension counters’ of the SAD and the Congress. “There is an attempt to make the Sikhs subservient of either BJP or Congress, which is unacceptable”. However, they admitted that Sikhs have been caught between devil and deep sea The Congress and the BJP’s track record of relations with non-Hindu minorities have been horrible. The Congress had organized massacres of the Sikhs in November 1984 and this was emulated by the BJP against the Muslim minority 18 years later in Gujarat. Similarly, the Congress destroyed Akal Takht in June 1984 whereas the BJP brought Babri Masjid to rubble in 1992. The Congress has patronized, funded and encouraged “godmen” and fake dera’s to create divisions amongst Sikhs whereas the ideology of Hindutva was to eliminate all diversity from the subcontinent and impose ‘one nation and one culture’ theory on its people. Criticizing the national level leaders for undermining the role and contribution of the regional parties in the progress of the country, they said the emergence of regional parties was a healthy sign as it would ensure the safety of the ethnic minorities, which have been at the receiving end in the larger polity of Hindu-India. Urging people to vote on merit, they said the focus and consideration of voters should not revolve around personalities. Rather it should be based on ideology, and principles besides proper governance. The leaders also demanded a thorough investigation to ascertain the motive of the arrested youth Rajiv Kumar, who attempted to defile the sacred environs of the Darbar Sahib a few days back. http://www.panthic.org/news/125/ARTICLE/4943/2009-05-01.html
