I know what you are saying and I am sure many of us have had to think about this issue at some point in time. But you have to remember that the True Guru has always been the Shabad Guru, gurbani is the menifestation of the Akal purakh.
Wah Wah Bani Nirankar hai, Tis jevad avar na koi:
Wonderful are the words, which denote the Supreme God, there is none as great as Him.
Gurbani is the pillar on which Sikhi is based upon: Bana, Bani, Seva and Simran - I believe that in this learning process, you have to go through stages of sunna (to listen), karna (to do), and samajhna( to understand). So if you look at it this way, even if you are listening to Bani, you are on the way and if you are doing it, well, the way I see it you are half way there. :TH:
Understand Gurbani isn't easy as going to school and reading books but with akal purakh's Bakshish you eventually get to that point.
