  2. Erindale Church sign greets Punjabis Mississauga News By Nouman Khalil MISSISSAUGA - As Mississaugans are getting ready for the Easter this coming weekend, Erindale United Church also greeted those who are celebrating Baisakhi the annual spring festival of Punjabis, mainly Sikhs. Earlier this week the churchs main signboard on Dundas St., just east of Mississauga Rd., reads Happy Baisakhi to our Sikh friends. Were getting ready to celebrate Easter, but at the same time also would like to wish our Sikh community members a Happy Baisakhi, said Neil R. Young, Minister of Erindale United Church. Its a sign of greeting for those who are celebrating Baisakhi. Soon after appearing on Tweeter and Facebook, the sign got hundreds of followers in and outside Mississauga. Young said one of the great things in Mississauga is that there is tremendous amount of friendship and cooperation between different interfaith groups, which is a real blessing for the whole community. To me, it wasnt unusual to put up a greeting sign of a faith group who are celebrating an event because we all support each other. I think we should also wear each others symbols, said Young. Baisakhi is a day of great significance for Sikhs as on this occasion Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of Sikhs, laid down the foundation of Khalsa the Order of the Pure Ones in 1699. 3. Redbridge Sikhs offer amazing response to cancer appeal Harry Kemble and Sunhail Patel , Reporter Thursday, April 17, 2014 9:21 AM Two Sikh congregations have showed a united front by registering 500 donors and raising thousands of pounds to increase bone marrow donors in the borough last week. The chance of finding a matching donor within the British Asian community is far smaller than if you were from a Caucasian background, due to lower population figures. The two Sikh temples in Redbridge - Gurdwara Karamsar in High Road, Ilford, and Gurdwara Singh Sabha in High Road, Seven Kings, held an event, on behalf of Delete Blood Cancer, to register blood donors and raise money for the cause. Mankamal Singh, a committee member at the Singh Sabha Gurdwara, said: I was definitely amazed by the response but the temple was busy because it was the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi. The mind set of the festival is to help people. Harpreet Lall attended the two-day festival on the Monday. Her six-year-old son Milan Singh Lall was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in January after being in remission for three years. Aged just three Milan was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Mrs Lall, a teacher assistant from Gidea Park, Romford, has had to leave her job to care for her son. She said: There are not many donors amongst Asians as a whole - I think there is only 3 per cent in the whole world on the national and international register. But Mrs Lall, whose family helped drive the cancer awareness campaign, is still trying to find a confirmed donor for her son. She added: We do not know if one of those 700 donors will help us in the future. Mrs Lall admitted she was very surprised £7,000 was donated to Delete Blood Cancer. We had people coming into the temple and pulling up their sleeves and saying where do we give blood. If anyone still wants to register as a potential donor to help someone with Leukaemia, they can do so by visiting deletebloodcancer.org.uk Source -http://www.ilfordrecorder.co.uk/news/news/redbridge_sikhs_offer_amazing_response_to_cancer_appeal_1_3562940

  5. Sikhs can wear kirpans at Canadian missions By Nouman Khalil BRAMPTON On the special occasion of Vaisakhi, the Canadian government Monday announced the implementation of a policy accommodating the wearing of kirpan a ceremonial sword or dagger in Canadian diplomatic missions around the world. Under the new policy, Sikh visitors to Canadian diplomatic missions will be permitted to wear kirpans provided they are secured within a sheath, attached to a fabric belt, and worn under clothing across the torso. The individual should also be in possession of the four other Sikh articles of faith. Minister of State Tim Uppal made the announcement at a ceremony at Brampton's Khalsa Community School to mark the birth of the Khalsa the Order of the Pure Ones, introduced by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of Sikhs in 1699. Canadas diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and freedom of religion is a fundamental Canadian value, said Uppal, who was making the announcement on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. Our governments new kirpan policy will serve as an example and promote Canadian values around the world. The strategy follows recent accommodation policies for the kirpan in courthouses in Toronto, Alberta and British Columbia. World Sikh Organisation (WSO) works with the government to craft such policies. The accommodation of the kirpan at Canadian diplomatic missions around the world is a deeply significant move that shows that the Government of Canada understands and respects the significance of the kirpan to Sikhs, said Amritpal Singh Shergill, president of WSO Canada. The answer to all problems is faith in SATNAAM ---> WAHEGURU ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ नानक दुखीआ सभु संसारु ॥ Nānak ḏukẖīā sabẖ sansār. NANAK AND THE TANTRIK KODA In a thick forest of India, Koda met Guru Nanak under strange circumstances. Mardana had lost his way and fallen into the hands of Koda; Mardana was just what he wanted for his man-sacrifice. Koda bound him hand and foot, and began his preparations, lighting a fire under a huge cauldron of oil. The wind blew, the rain came, and the fire went out. He tried again, with the same result; and he knew not why the elements went against him that day. He looked up and there stood Guru Nanak. His look disconcerted Koda, who went into his cave to consult his mirror. The mirror gave him the image of man, and he came out and asked for forgiveness. Nanak said: “Koda, Sing His Great Name.” Koda entered the path of discipleship. NANAK AND SAJAN THAG Sajan kept a Moslem mosque and a Hindu shrine side by side for the weary travellers to rest in a lonely jungle pathway. There lay the bones of many a traveller that came hither to rest in the midst of the temple or the mosque. Once Nanak was the guest of Sajan for a night. Sajan served the Guru with the utmost devotion, for he took him to be a very rich man. He saw the sparkle of a million jewels on the Guru’s forehead. Late at night, Sajan, as usual, invited the Guru to retire to rest. Such heavenly music was uttered by the Guru when Mardana began playing his rebec, that Sajan was overwhelmed with remorse; He was washed with music. He cried, “Save me! even me, O Divine One!” “Be poor,” said the Guru, “and sing His Name!” NANAK AND VALI QANDHARI Once Nanak was near the ancient Buddhist city of Taxila. A bleak mountain now called Vali Qandhari (the prophet of Qandhar) stands with its bare peak at a little distance from Taxila, towards the Peshawar side on the great trunk road by which came Alexander the Great and other invaders to India. This mountain is so called because in the times of Guru Nanak there lived a Vali - a prophet - a native of Qandhar, on its high summit. He had built himself a house by the side of a little spring of crystal fresh water on the top of the mountain. This was the only spring of water near the place where once encamped Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana. Mardana was very thirsty. The Guru asked him to go up and drink water from the fountain of Vali Qandhari. Mardana went up, but the reception of the Vali was very indifferent. “Who are you?” said he. “My name is Mardana, and I am a disciple of Nanak,” replied Bhai Mardana. “What brings you here?” “I feel thirsty, and wish to have some water from your spring.” “There is no water here for such as you; go back and ask your Master for it.” Nanak asked Mardana to go again, saying that they were simple folk of God and wanted some water from his spring. Mardana went three times as bidden by the Guru, but to no purpose. The last time when he came back, Guru Nanak said, “Never mind, Mardana! Dig here. There is a fountain of water flowing at your feet.” The spring was there, it came with its cool crystal waters kissing the feet of the Master. Vali Qandhari, too, came down to see Guru Nanak who so naturally attracted everyone. Guru Nanak spoke to Vali Qandhari saying: “O friend, those who live so high, should not be rock-like dry.” Vali Qandhari was enriched with the wisdom of the Master, and blessed with poverty; he too, drank the waters that flowed at the Master’s feet. http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Guru_Nanak_Dev_(By_Puran_Singh)

They have been doing preparations for this show since last year and have spend good money for the preparations. They are getting some harassing calls from our community as well against the show...People from COMMUNITY are also making inappropriate calls to the EVENT VENUE MANAGEMENT as well.... We need your INPUT On this, What do you suggest on this? As mentioned before , we have NOTHING against them and are positive about them that they are organizing this event in a non-alcoholic environment unlike SIKH GAMES. However we definitely believe that JAZZY B should be made answerable on this. At the same time, we request the COMMUNITY not to make any harassing calls to Rangla Punjab Concerts Group Organizers. Our Actions should be to create awareness against these SOLD SINGERS in a way which does not create BAD IMAGE to our Own Community in Australia. #SinghStation

  12. Trucking is popular with Punjabi's whether it's India or Abroad. Reasons 1. Demand is more than Supply. 2. Even an illiterate - unskilled person can be trained to drive a truck. 3. Decent income. 4. Transport Industry offers growth opportunity. One can start as a serviceman ie driver, later on buy a truck on hire purchase and eventually start a company by buying more trucks & hiring drivers. As for the issue it's more about foreigners taking job opportunities from locals. Indians are more hardworking as they have to support large families both in India & abroad. They save more then spend, this makes others jealous of their achievement.

  14. OTA meets with Sikh truckers to address shared issues 2014-04-09 TORONTO, Ont. -- The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) and members of the Sikh trucking community have come together to address common concerns. The two groups met over the weekend at the OTAs offices. More than 40 representatives from the OTA and the Canadian Sikh Association (CSA) participated. The Sikh drivers expressed concerns about their rights to wear their turbans, however much of the discussion focused on issues that are universal across the industry, the OTA reports. Trucking is trucking, in the end. Most of the issues raised are the same everywhere, regardless of carrier size or the ethnic origin of carriers and owner-operators, said OTA president David Bradley. While this was the first meeting of its kind, everyone who attended agreed it was very constructive. Going into the meeting we were not sure what to expect, but we were received very well by OTA and its board members who were in attendance, said Simran Kaur Chattha, chair of the Canadian Sikh Association. Through dialogue we hope to promote a better understanding between Sikh truckers and the membership of OTA which is a very effective voice for the industry.
