  5. Kar Sewa means founding, developing and constructing activities. Its concept dates back to Great Gurus , Guru Nanak Dev Ji founded Kartarpur, Khadoor Sahib, Goindwal, Amritsar, Taran Taran, Akal Takht and Kirat Pur Sahib. The construction of Anand Pur Sahib was done by Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Ram Dass Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji and Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji respectively. Similarly the tradition of building activities was carried forward with the sense of selfless – service. Whether its social work, humanity or construction of Gurudwaras or any thing else. The construction work of Gurudwaras and other structures is taken up by the devotees, unmindful of their status, caste or creed. The Kar Sewa has played an important role in building Gurudwaras and other major structures right from the early stages of SIKHISM. Baba Harbans Singh Ji abandoned the domestic life in 1943 and joined the KARSEWA for construction of Historical shrines of Nankana Sahib now in Pakistan. At that time Kar Sewa was in progress under the noble guidance and personal supervision of Sant Baba Gurmukh Singh Ji. As ordained by Baba Gurmukh Singh Ji, he resolved to dedicate his whole life to KAR SEWA organization

  13. Punjab is land of five rivers in North West India and North East Pakistan. Punj means five and aab means water, so punjab means five waters. These five rivers that run through punjab, having their originating source as various small lakes in Himalayas. If one were to go across the Punjab starting from Delhi and to Afghanistan, the rivers are in this order. Beus, Satluj, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum. Beus, and Satluj merge into one river retaining the name Satluj at Harike near Ferozepur in Punjab just before crossing the border into west Punjab (Pakistan) and eventually merging into river Indus. Area of Punjab that is between rivers of Beus and Satluj is called Doaba, major cities in this part of punjab are Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Nawan Shahr. Majha is between Beus and Chenab and on both sides of Ravi, this part is called the heart of Punjab and cities include, Lahore, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Sialkote, Kasur, Lyallpur(Faisalabad), Faridkot and Ferozepur. In Majha part of Punjab many new cities were developed by converting the forests into cultivating land and is called Bar, cities include Lyallpur (Faisalabad), Montgomery, etc. Area beyond Chenab river in North and around river Jhelum is called Pothohar, cities include Rawalpindi, Hasan Abdal, etc. Area between Ravi and Chenab river is called Rachna doab cities are Gujrat, Sargodha, etc. Area of Malwa is southern Punjab facing Rajasthan and East of river Beus, cities include Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Karnal, Sangrur, Malerkotla, Shahabad, and Abohar. Punjabi civilization is one of the oldest on earth, with its distinguished language, culture, food, attire, script, folklore, people, etc. Punjabi langauge has its originating source in Sanskrit (not Hindi or Urdu as many young Indian pakistanis believe), i.e. the family of Indo-European group of langauges which includes Persian and Latin. Punjab has always been land of great saints and fighters. In 450 B.C (2450 years ago) Alexander invaded Punjab and conquered a great Punjabi king named Porus whose kingdom was on the banks of river Chenab. He did not accepted defeat and asked Greek king to show him the same respect as kings. He was restored back to his throne by Alexander. Alexander returned to Greece right before crossing the river Beus, as his forces refused to fight. In his train we have a reliable resource that tells us about Punjab 2450 years ago. Not much different from today (except for the technology).

  18. It is ironic that at a time when the world claims to be becoming a global village, distance abolished and various communities are growing to be more understanding and tolerant of one another, Sikhs should be having to launch protests against a French ban on turbans in government-run schools. The ill-considered ban should have never been imposed in the first place. The 2004 ban does not stop at schools alone. The French government has also not been issuing passports, driving licences and residency cards to Sikhs who refuse to remove their turbans for ID photos. What is significant is that the turban has been worn by Sikhs with pride for centuries as a symbol of identity they believe in and belong to. Some do not; but that does not diminish its significance in any way. In fact, it only shows that it is not purely a religious accoutrement like the cross. That is all the more reason to allow its use in every secular society. French President Nicolas Sarkozy must be explained its significance during his Indian visit. That as eminent a person as Dr Manmohan Singh wears a turban regularly is an irrefutable argument in favor of a lifting of the French ban. As we wrote in an earlier editorial, will the French government like to exclude the Indian Prime Minister from dialogue just because he is a turban-wearing Sikh? Imposing the ban on school children and others is tantamount to discrimination. The Indian government ought to intervene in an effective manner and ensure that France lifts the ban which is simply ridiculous in the modern day world and against the tenets France has been standing for. The avowed purpose of separating the Church and the State will not be served by this odd ban because it clearly violates Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which maintains that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, worship and observance. France needs to set an example in respecting human rights and not curbing these.

  23. aap shayi hoya, sachche da sachcha dhoya Baba Harbans Singh Ji Kar Sewa Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Delhi(India) http://www.panjpyare.com BABA HARBANS SINGH JI belongs to this tradition of Kar Sewa organization at present. He was born on 1 st January, 1923 in village Noorpur Thal, District Sargodha of Punjab now in Pakistan. His father Sardar Asa Singh Ji and mother Mata Dharam Kaur Ji were deeply religious minded persons. Babaji from the childhood itself wanted to join company of Sikh Saints and other religious persons. As ordained by Baba Gurmukh Singh Ji, he resolved to dedicate his whole life to KAR SEWA organization. Initially Babaji worked under supervision of Baba Jhanda Singh Ji, Baba Dalip Singh Ji and Baba Jiwan Singh Ji. Babaji was entrusted with the Kar Sewa at Pehowa initially. In 1976 Babaji came to Delhi and started the Kar Sewa of constructing Sarovar at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Ji. Later on Langar Hall at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Ji and Diwan Hall at Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib Ji were constructed under Babaji‘s supervision. Babaji is also responsible for completion of Gurudwara Sahib Nanak Piyao, Majnu Tilla, Bala Sahib, Dam Dama Sahib, Moti Bagh , Mata Sundri Ji and at Mehrauli – the martyrdom place of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. Besides all this, Gurudwara Sis Ganj has been expanded and work of widening hall at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is in progress. In Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, Guru Tegh Bahadur Niwas has been constructed for comfortable stay of pilgrims where a Kotwali existed earlier. Recently a site has been acquired at Fountain, Chandani Chowk right in front of Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and the construction of Auditorium etc is in progress in memory of Bhai Mati Dass Ji. Babaji is also responsible for completion of Sarais at Sis Ganj Sahib to accommodate 1000 people, Sarai at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib to accommodate 500 people and Sarai at Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib to accommodate 450 people. In Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib Complex large number of buildings have come up for printing press, Gurmat Sangeet Vidalaya , Langar Halls and Administrative block of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee and mammoth Diwan Hall named Lakhi Shah Vanjara Hall . In Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Complex building for Langar Hall, Baba Baghel Singh Museum and a charitable hospital have been constructed. At present Babaji is looking after the Kar Sewa of various Gurudwaras and other buildings all over India, to name few are as follows: - Three storied parking at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Ji, New Delhi is ready to park 300 cars and it will increase its capacity to 400 to 450 within few months. Already 15 crores has been invested and further 20 crores is required to complete the same. Similarly Babaji is looking after the Kar Sewa going on at Muktsar Sahib, Jaito Mandi, Machiwara, Chamkor Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Bhatha Sahib, Chathi Badshai at Srinagar, Gurudwara at Baramulla, Gurudwara at Uri, Tabri sahib in Assam, Nanak Matta Sahib, Guru Nanak Sahib at Kanshipur, Mauj Sahib at Kotan , Allamgir, Katna Sahib, Rai Kot, and many other places in India. Babaji carry out these activities through donations received and near about Rs. 5 crores is spent on these activities during a month. Baba Harbans Singh Ji is truly a living legend. He is apostle of humility, leads a very simple and truly religious life and has no personal ambitions at all. In fact all his associates are fully devoted to Kar Sewa Organization and have dedicated their lives to this cause. Babaji insists on recitation of “Waheguru” to all persons who come to him. His vision is welfare of humanity irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion or nationality. He is an embodiment of love and compassion. In this present era of materialism and greed, Babaji a truly divine personality stands apart. Let us all join him making contribution to this great work and have blessings of almighty Waheguru.
