There was a holy saint who used to wake up at Amritwela, goto the river and so ishnaan... one of his follower used to follow him every time... Once when he was going to the river he saw one scorpion getting drowned in the river and is trying so hard to come out but in vain. The saint out of his kind nature thought of helping that scorpion out... as the saint got the scorpion out the scorpion bite the saint and fell back into the water... it happened 3 times and the follower of the saint asked "babaji why are you trying to help the scorpion even if he had bit you thrice... the saint said its his nature to bite everyone... if he is not ready to leave his nature... why shall i leave the nature of a saint(to help everyone)" Ofcourse guru sahib told us that when crime goes beyond limit, it is right to carry a weapon to finish crime... But we sikhs of today have so much anger in us, that we just wanna fight on every little thing... and we end up fighting amongst ourselves... others take advantage of it The 5 vices in us has made us so weak that we have no sehaj... Bhai Sahib had a habit that before eating food he used to feed the sparrows... Once while feeding the sparrows he raised his hands and said "Bandeya tun pichhe reh gaya, chiriyan baazi leh gayiyan". He said it again and again and the other singh who saw him asked what do you mean bhai sahib. Bhai sahib said these sparrows while eating everytime they take anything in their mouth they bow their head to thank GOD(who has given them food) and we humans always eat and never thank GOD for what HE has given us... sparrows are far better than us... Conclusion of the story... **Naam bina jo pehre khaaye, jeon kookar jhoothan meh paaye** Guru sahib already said so much but still we never listen ... Chaupa Singh was a Chhiber Brahmin and sometimes he seems to let a bit of a Brahmin bias enter into his work. At other times he is completely egalitarian and condemns caste in all forms. "Naa daekhai Khatree, naa daekhai Shood ki Vaish hai. Sikh Guru kaa daekhai, jaat barn naa daekhai" meaning "One should not look at whether someone is Khatri or Shudra or Vaish. One should look whether someone is a Sikh, one should not look at caste or clan." (77) All my references on this rehitnama come from the Padam book. The Chaupa Singh rehitnama also contains a number of internal contradictions which indicate that it has been tampered with. One very clear case is the situaton of "saluting the sun". I havn't seen the manuscript you quote which says not to give Paahul to women, but the common Chaupa Singh rehitnama says the following: "Jo Sikh, SikhNee noo(n) khanday dee paahul naa dayvay, so Tankhaiyaa" (105) meaning, "that Sikh who does not give khanday kee paahul to a female-Sikh, is a Tankhaiyaa". Even in regards to reading Sree Guru Granth Sahib, your references are correct, but the same rehitnama then goes on to say, "Guru kee SikhNee Granth Sahib pothee paRn sikhay..." (107) meaning a female-Sikh should learn how to read Sree Guru Granth Sahib. Overall, we can learn interesting things from rehitnamas, but we can't consider them to be the authority on rehit. Rehit has been passed down amongst Gursikhs and it's hard to find but it still exists. In gurbani no where anything is written for a particular gender... it is written for a human... whereever gender is used in gurbani is to differentiate GOD and Human Soul... and in that aspect every human soul is treated as female where GOD is treated as male... So what i think is that there is no point argueing on these things... ofcourse discussion is good thing to learn... but when it is getting to an arguement it shall be avoided... rest all sangat is much more knowledgable... so can decide what is the best... I read yesterday... he was a very poor person from a village and hardly used to get food to eat... so he thought of going to the city to work and earn his living... he had a khoti(<admin-profanity filter activated>) which he had brought up with lot of love, so he decided to take her along... On the way to the city, the way was through the jungle and coz he and his khoti hadn't eaten for many days, the khoti died... he was very upset as he was too attached to her... he found some open place and burried the khoti... and sat down with immense grief... "Sir sut ke udaas baith gaya" Some travellers passing by saw this person sitting in grief near the samadhi(burrial of his khoti)... one of the traveller thinking it as a samadhi of some baba... threw some money and bowed(matha tekya)... the guy(villager) was surprised on what the traveller did... and then the traveller asked baba ji eh kis baba ji di samadhi hai?? the guy didn't knew what to say... he thought for a while and said "Baba Khoti Shah ji... shreeman 1008" listening to it other travellers also took out some money from their pocket and "matha tek ta"... seeing all this the guy thought, now there is no need for him to goto city... now he can establish his own city here itself ...
